Le Space Apps Challenge est un hackathon*
international ayant lieu pendant 48 heures en même
temps dans plusieurs villes de par le monde. L’évènement est construit autour d’une démarche
collaborative pour produire des solutions ouvertes
(open source) et innovantes, applicables dans le cadre
de la vie sur Terre ou dans l’espace.
La NASA croit en la collaboration pour
créer et découvrir des technologies à
la pointe du progrès. L’internal Space
Apps Challenge vise à engager des
passionnés pour développer des
solutions innovates à nos challenges
les plus dur.
Les Hackathons sont des évènements de développement technologoques qui mettent en avant les talents et initiatives de brillants volontaires – developpeurs,
ingénieurs, designers et passionnés partageant le désir d’avoir un impact rapide sur le monde.
Retour sur 2012
Le premier International Space Apps Challenge a eu lieu en Avril 2012 dans 25 villes réparties sur les
sept continents. L’évènement a réuni plus de 2000 participants de 16 à 70 ans pour affronter 71
défis pour améliorer la vie dans l’espace et sur Terre ! Plus de 100 solutions uniques et open source
ont été développées en moins de 48 heures. En voici 10 exemples :
Aurora Project
An app that shows aurora intensity, the ISS location and space weather data
using the WebGL globe platform.
ExoAPI
A RESTful API to extend the accessibility of NASA Kepler exoplanetary data.
Lunar Landing Analysis Tool
An app that calculates the ideal landing site on the Moon using NASA Lunar
Reconnaissance Orbert and produces a “heat map” that can be viewed using
Google Earth.
VICAR2PNG
An app that allows anyone to view, enjoy and remix NASA’s mission image
from the Cassini mission.
Planet Hopper
An app that visualizes Kepler data to allow children and teachers to explore all
the exoplanets that we know about.
Growers Nation
An app that explores the potential of unused land for the growing of fruit,
vegetable and other crops through the use of location, climate and growing
data.
Bit Harvester
An SMS-based remote data acquisition and control system for renewable
energy installations.
Strange Desk
An app that allows users to socially share and analyze the occurrence of
strange events with others.
Pineapple Project
An app that provides the optimal crop for your community by filtering a tropical
crop database by location’s rainfall, latitude, elevation and pH.
Satellite Data Correlation Tool
A visualization of the growth in electrification and population across the globe,
using night-time lighting from satellite data across a region as a proxy.

Le Space Meet Up à la Cantine Toulouse
Organisée début avril à la Cantine, ce meetup préparatoire permettra de mobiliser les participants et
les partanaires, définir le cadre d’organisation et créer un temps de partage et de formation autour
de ce Space Apps
Space Apps Challenge à la Cantine Toulouse
Organisée les 20 et 21 Avril à la Cantine, ce week end rassemblera plus de 50 participants,
developpeurs, designers, entrepreneurs, chercheurs, étudiants durant 2 jours en équipes
pluridisciplinaires pour répondre à des challenges proposés dans le cadre du Space Apps
Challenges. Toues contenus produits ce week end seront publiés dans une license open source.
Les Challenges de 2013
L’évènement proposera des challenges dans le domaine du software open source, du open
hardware, de la data visualisation et des sciences citoyennes. Toutes les idées de challenges sont
encore en cours d’analyse et de redéfinition, les challenges finaux seront postés sur le site de
l’évènement un mois avant son début. Voici un exemple de 10 challenges qui pourraient être
parmi ceux sélectionnés.

Help us tell the “why” of space exploration.
Moonville
Create a game to simulate the development of a sustainable industry using
resources launched from Earth and available on the Moon.
Hitch a Ride to Mars
Design a CubeSat (or constellation of CubeSats) to accomplish scientific and
technical objectives for an upcoming Mars exploration mission.
Near Earth Object Visualization
Use data concerning asteroids and other materials (such as man-made space
debris) to create a beautiful representation of the objects surrounding our
planet.
Adopt a Spacecraft: Voyager 1
Using interactive data, craft an object that connects people to Voyager
mission.
Smart Cities, Smart Climate
Explore the impacts of atmospheric changes on the health, infrastructure and
society in urban areas.
Off the Grid
Research, develop, and/or refine existing platforms to help humans live ‘off the
grid’.
Soil Testing Kit
Create a soil testing kit to help produce growers easily and inexpensively test
the depth, type, pH, temperature, nutrient content and moisture of soil using
everyday household resources. Deployable Greenhouse
Develop a conceptual design of deployable greenhouse that could be used for
pre-deployment on a space mission to the Moon or Mars.
Renewable Energy Explorer App
Create an app or visualization that integrates wind, solar, and geothermal
energy data and allow users to see where their potentials are at their greatest.
