Brief Summary New Golf BlueMotion – The Most Fuel Efficient Golf of All Time Golf BlueMotion – Combining amazing fuel economy, affordability, comfort, safety and practicality for the everyday driver First showcased at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney last year, Volkswagen’s new, super-efficient model – Golf BlueMotion – is finally ready to prove that amazing fuel-efficiency can still be obtained in an everyday car. The Golf BlueMotion combines efficiency with comfort and equipment to create a vehicle that delivers greater economy and fewer emissions, yet performs and appears like any other Volkswagen product. The name BlueMotion not only refers to the model, its fuel economy and emissions, but comprehensively to the whole brand: Blue is the corporate colour of Volkswagen and stands for the elements to be protected such as water and air; Motion embodies the aspect of forward, future-directed mobility with the goal to protect the earth’s resources for future generations. The Golf BlueMotion brings an exclusive package of visual and technical measures to achieve astonishing fuel economy of just 3.8L/100km and significantly reducing CO 2 emissions to only 99g/ km whilst offering the everyday comfort, safety and practicality of a well-equipped five-door hatch. The Golf BlueMotion is equipped with an exceedingly innovative high-tech package yet is affordable for all drivers. This package includes an efficient common rail TDI engine developing 77kW of power and features several systems and modifications to optimise efficiency. These include a Start / Stop system, and a multifunction computer providing visual gear change recommendation for optimum fuel consumption. Low rolling resistance tyres are also fitted to reduce the drag of the vehicle. New Golf BlueMotion_Australian Launch_Adelaide_May 2011 / VOLKSWAGEN / 04 The result is a competitively-priced vehicle that will match or beat hybrids currently available in the market while being conventional to drive, service and repair. Delivering on its promise to produce class-leading vehicles which are efficient, sustainable, practical, comfortable and competitively priced, the Golf BlueMotion boasts a surplus of prestigious awards to its list of accolades including being recently awarded the overall “Green Car of the Year” by What Car? Green Awards 2010, beating eight other category winners. The Golf BlueMotion was also named best “Green Small Family Car”. New Golf BlueMotion_Australian Launch_Adelaide_May 2011 / VOLKSWAGEN / 05 Facts Overview Key Facts - Golf BlueMotion • Golf BlueMotion was unveiled as a concept in September 2008 • Class-leading CO 2 output of 99 g/km and a combined economy figure 3.8L/100km give the Golf BlueMotion a theoretical range of over 1,400km. • 1.6-litre, four-cylinder TDI 77kW engine develops 250Nm of torque and is linked to a revised engine management system and a reduced idle speed. The modifications increase the engine’s efficiency to allow greater performance while simultaneously using less fuel. • Further gains in economy are made through aerodynamic improvements and changes to the drivetrain – including longer ratios in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears to decrease engine speed. • Changes to the Golf’s body are subtle in appearance yet extensive with modifications to the underside of the vehicle to smooth the airf low. • Sports styling kit improves aerodynamics and closed sections of the front grille help reduce cooling system drag as less heat is rejected by the engine. • Ride height lowered by 15 mm to further reduce frontal and aerodynamic drag. • To further reduce weight and therefore aid efficiency, the new Golf BlueMotion comes with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel. New Golf BlueMotion_Australian Launch_Adelaide_May 2011 / VOLKSWAGEN / 06 Styling Setting aesthetic standards The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion also sets new aesthetic standards with its special design of interior and exterior features, with the logo on the radiator grille and rear differentiating the BlueMotion from the rest of the Golf range. Exterior The new Golf BlueMotion’s exterior appearance is distinguished from the base model by the following additional features: modified radiator grille with chrome trim, bumpers and side skirt extensions in sporty R-Line styling, "Wellington" 15" alloy wheels with tyres (195/65) developed for low rolling resistance, low tyre pressure indicator and tyre mobility set, smoked rear lights, roof edge spoiler in GTI design and BlueMotion signature on the radiator grille and tailgate. The Golf BlueMotion will also be available in the special colour “Glacier Blue” metallic. New Golf BlueMotion_Australian Launch_Adelaide_May 2011 / VOLKSWAGEN / 07 Performance Uniting sustainability and dynamic performance While delivering a combined fuel consumption figure which can compete with all in its class, the Golf BlueMotion does not compromise on driving experience or affordability. Instead it truly demonstrates what is technically feasible when the best available yet affordable technologies of our times are combined. The most fuel-efficient production Golf of all times is powered by a quiet and powerful common rail turbo-diesel and like all TDIs, this engine does not lack in power or torque by any measure. In fact, the opposite is true: the 77kW TDI engine develops its maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1,500 rpm to 2,500 rpm. With a theoretical range of over 1,400 kilometres (55 litre tank) the Golf BlueMotion will keep you on the road for longer while producing minimal CO 2 emissions - a low 99 g/km. Equipped with these key performance parameters, the engine accelerates the Golf BlueMotion to 100 km/h in just 11.3 seconds. Along with BlueMotion features (including Start/Stop system and regenerative braking), there are additional detailed solutions customised specifically for the Golf BlueMotion. The Golf BlueMotion shares the unparalleled safety features which are fitted to all Golf models. These include standard ABS, EBD and Brake Assist, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program), Hill Start Assist, a highly effective network of seven airbags including front side and side airbags (head airbag system for front and rear passengers) and a knee airbag; belt tensioners and belt force limiters plus seatbelt warning indicator and head restraints that counteract the risk of whiplash injury (both front seats); along with three rear head restraints with three point seatbelts for all passengers. New Golf BlueMotion_Australian Launch_Adelaide_May 2011 / VOLKSWAGEN / 08 Technology Technology features creating optimal fuel-efficiency The BlueMotion Technologies aboard the Golf BlueMotion make up a comprehensive package of extremely diverse high-tech components and efficiency solutions. Building the foundation for the extremely low fuel consumption and emission values of the Golf BlueMotion is a 1.6-litre TDI with four cylinders with modified engine management software and reduced idling speed. A gear-shift indicator integrated in the instrument cluster shows the most energ y-efficient gear for the current driving conditions. Other BlueMotion features include recovery of braking energ y (regenerative braking), a Start/Stop system, low rolling resistance tyres, especially lightweight and aerodynamic wheels, lowered suspension as well as sporty design modifications and a customised interior. Running Gear The Golf BlueMotion features a number of additional modifications to improve efficiency which help to make it the most efficient production Golf ever. The standard five-speed manual gearbox has been modified, lengthening the gearing in 3rd, 4th and 5th which decreases engine speed and improves efficiency. These revisions to the gearbox work in conjunction with a multifunction computer which shows recommended gear changes for maximum economy. Aerodynamics The Golf BlueMotion is fitted with a sports styling kit to improve aerodynamics and boost efficiency as well as to distinguish this car from others in the range. The styling kit comprises sports bumpers, side skirts and an enlarged rear roof spoiler. New Golf BlueMotion_Australian Launch_Adelaide_May 2011 / VOLKSWAGEN / 09 The Golf BlueMotion is fitted with alloy wheels and low rolling re sistance ty res, and al so features sports suspension, lowe re d by approx im atel y 1 5 m m , im proving aerody nam ics a n d re d u c i n g d ra g . Regenerative braking A re ge ne ra t iv e braking sy stem is appl ied to the Gol f Bl ueMotion a n d h e lp s to util ise energ y that woul d otherwise be l ost during b ra k in g. In deceleration and braking phases, the alternator’s voltage is boosted and used for bulk recharging of the car’s battery. Thanks to alternator control, it is possible to lower alternator voltage for example, during deceleration or driving at a constant speed. It is even possible to switch off the alternator entirely which reduces engine load and improves fuel consumption. Start / Stop The Golf BlueMotion feature, an automatic Start / Stop system, operated through the clutch pedal. When coming to a halt at traffic lights, for example, the driver depresses the clutch and selects neutral. When the clutch is released, the engine shuts down and a ‘Start / Stop’ symbol illuminates on the multifunction display. In order to move away, the driver simply depresses the clutch once again to select first gear and the engine restarts automatically. The system can be deactivated through a switch, if necessary.
