By our unofficial count, the conference brought
together more than 200 scholars from 28 American states and the District of Columbia, 7 Canadian provinces, 6 European nations, and Australia. A wide variety of interests and disciplines
were represented, spanning the arts and humanities, history and the social sciences; there was
literally something for everybody. And I have

through its Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie (MRIF), provided
significant funding and logistical support for the
conference. The Association internationale des
études québécoises (AIÉQ) sponsored individual
elements of the program including a reading by
contemporary Québec poets in memory of
ACQS stalwart Émile Talbot. Other contributors and supporters include: the Association for
Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS),
the Canada Council for the Arts/Conseil des arts
du Canada, the Canadian-American Center of
the University of Maine, Concordia University,
Contemporary French Civilization, the Duke University Canadian Studies Endowment, the Editorial
Board of Québec Studies, the Franco-American
Center of the University of Maine, the International Council for Canadian Studies/Conseil international des études canadiennes, Liverpool
University Press, the Playwrights Guild of Canada, Plymouth State University, the Simone de
Beauvoir Institute, SUNY Plattsburgh’s Institute
on Québec Studies, Union College, the University of Illinois, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, the Université de Montréal, and
the University of South Alabama.
Now that the conference is over, the Executive
Board is turning its collective attention to new
tasks—including (yes!) preparations for our next
conference, in 2016. Please put it on your calendar now: November 3-6 at the Westin Harborview Hotel in Portland, Maine! Another task
confronting us is reviewing our finances with an
eye toward maintaining stability in a challenging
economic environment. We have already taken
two important steps to economize in 2014: outsourcing publication of our top-flight scholarly
journal, Québec Studies, to Liverpool University
Press, and deciding to put the ACQS secretariat
into dormancy during non-conference years. In
regard to the second point, I would like to convey my special thanks to Director Stephen
Hornsby and retired Associate Director Raymond Pelletier of the Canadian-American Cen-
ter of the University of Maine at Orono for generously hosting the ACQS secretariat from 2008
through 2014. Their willingness to do so was an
incredible boon to our organization. I would
also like to thank Danielle Beaupré for her many
years of service to the secretariat. With the decision to put the ACQS secretariat into dormancy,
Director Susan Pinette of the Franco-American
Center of the University of Maine has kindly
agreed to house our archives, which have been
expertly arranged by Joe Arsenault. Thank you,
Susan and Joe, for helping with this significant
transition.
So, you see, the flurry of conference-related activity may have subsided momentarily, but the
work of the ACQS proceeds, if less visibly than
before. But do not be fooled: before you know
it, we will be back together at yet another of our
congenial gatherings, this time in coastal Maine.
In the meantime, please enjoy this Newsletter and
the journal, and feel free to contact us on the
Executive Board with your comments and concerns.

Letter from the Vice President
ACQS Membership
It was wonderful to see so many of you in Montreal in October! I think it goes without saying
that the 2014 ACQS Biennial Conference was a
truly memorable one. As the 2014 Conference
Chair, I would like to say thank you to everyone
who contributed to the success of the conference, including the members of the ACQS Executive Board, the Section Chairs who helped
review submissions and organize our panels, and
all of our presenters who came from near and
far to share their work and inspire thoughtful
discussion and exchange.
I would like to give an extra special thanks to
Charles Batson and Denis Provencher whose
work in recruiting and organizing our Queer
Québec panels succeeded in adding a wonderful
new dynamic to our Biennial Conference. I don’t
think any of us will soon forget the Saturday
evening circus performance! Merci beaucoup!

Letter from the Québec Studies Editor
The ACQS Executive Board would like to thank
Patrice Proulx (University of Nebraska at
Omaha) for her years of service as the Québec
Studies Book Review Editor. Patrice is a widely
published scholar, specializing in the literature of
immigration in both France and Québec, and a
sterling editor, so we are pleased to announce
that she has agreed to become the journal’s Associate Editor for the Humanities.
And it is with equal pride and pleasure that we
announce that Amy J. Ransom (Central Michigan University) has agreed to replace Professor
Proulx as the Book Review Editor. In addition
to her reviews and articles in academic journals,
Amy has published Science Fiction from Quebec: A
Postcolonial Study (McFarland, 2009) and Hockey
P.Q.: Canada’s Game in Quebec Popular Culture (University of Toronto Press, 2014). She will
be reaching out to ACQS members to invite
them to review books and she asks that ACQS
authors have their publishers contact her to arrange reviews. She can be reached
at [email protected].
The Fund for the ACQS
The Fund for the ACQS will insure the financial stability of the organization and generate dividends that
will allow the ACQS to expand its mission and serve
a greater number of researchers and institutions. Currently contributions are tax-deductible only in the
United States. See our website for more information.
Letter from the Book Review Editor
As the new book review editor of Québec Studies,
I would like to introduce myself briefly. I am an
associate professor of French at Central Michigan University and have been a member of the
ACQS since 2010. My training is in literary studies, but I use a very interdisciplinary approach in
my research, as can be seen in my most recent
book, Hockey PQ: Canada’s Game in Quebec’s Popular Culture (U of Toronto P, 2014).
I am looking forward to reading your reviews of
historical, political science, cultural studies and
all the array of disciplines we unite in this organization. I also bring to the table some experience
in this area as associate book review editor for
