COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA Gordon Stevenson Director of Media Relations Phone: (978) 373-­‐9640 Fax: (978) 373-­‐9642 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, June 27, 2013 College Hockey America All-­‐Academic Team Announced (Ten Earn Student-­‐Athlete of the Year Honor) HAVERHILL, Mass. – College Hockey America Commissioner Robert DeGregorio proudly announced today that 94 student-­‐athletes have been named to the 2013-­‐14 CHA All-­‐Academic Team. To qualify for the College Hockey America All-­‐Academic Team an individual must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all of the academic periods during which her team was actively competing. The 94 CHA players receiving this honor is up from 77 last season, when the league first expanded to six teams. Ten of those student-­‐athletes earned additional distinction as co-­‐CHA Student Athletes of the Year by posting cumulative GPAs of 4.0. Four players from Lindenwood received this honor, as well as three from RIT, two from Penn State and one from Robert Morris. Representing Lindenwood as Student-­‐Athletes of the Year are three forwards, sophomore Lyndsay Kirkham and juniors Kendra Broad and Alison Wickenheiser, as well as junior goaltender Nicole Hensley. Hensley, Broad and Wickenheiser are recognized for the second-­‐straight season. Three juniors from RIT also made the list. Tiger defenseman Lindsay Kirkham joins forward Celeste Brown and goaltender Ali Binnington, both earning their second-­‐straight honors. Penn State added two of their own for the first time in program history with freshman Laura Bowman and graduate student Lindsay Riehl. Robert Morris junior forward Katelyn Scott earned her third-­‐straight Student-­‐Athlete of the Year award. Of the 94 students recognized, Robert Morris placed the most with 21. Lindenwood and Penn State each added 18 players, followed by Syracuse with 14, RIT with 13 and Mercyhurst with 10. Five members of the All-­‐Academic Team were also named the First Team All-­‐Conference, along with four members of the Second All-­‐Conference Team and three members of the All-­‐Rookie Team. The individual award winners for Player of the Year (Christine Bestland, Mercyhurst). Rookie of the Year (Jessica Dodds, RMU), Sportsman of the Year (Taylor Gross, Penn State), Best Defensive Forward (Shelby Bram, Mercyhurst), and Goaltender of the Year (Ali Binnington) were among the honorees.
