More than a display of beautiful images, it is a report on the state of our planet, with educational materials to help us better understand and preserve it. New photographs are regularly added to this exhibition. That presents images from the book, Earth From Above, published in 24 languages and with close to 3 million copies sold. More than 130 million people in about 120 cities in the world have seen this exhibition. Yann Arthus-Bertrand invites us to take a journey with him through the realities of the world. His aerial photographs reflect the variety of natural habitats and expressions of life, and also man’s imprint and assault on his environment. This work constitutes a “state of the planet” at the beginning of a new millennium. The photographs are indissociable from the text. Together, they invite all of us to think about the changes of the planet and the future of its inhabitants. As a witness photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand wishes to address as many citizens of all countries as possible. His work underlines the fact that, more than ever, our present levels and modes of consumption, production and exploitation of resources are not viable over the long term. It illustrates a decisive stage where the alternatives offered by sustainable development must help to bring about changes that will make it possible to “answer the needs of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations to answer theirs.” These changes, this efficient undertaking of a commitment to sustainable development, do not only depend on the wills of governments and those in power around the world. Each one of us, individually, has a role to play in the future of the planet; everyone has the power to act and the duty to rally, massively, in order to influence the decision-makers. With these images, Yann Arthus-Bertrand offers us the way to such awareness. Milan – Italy Fruit of a patient research work begun in 1990, these photographs, chosen from thousands of shots, owe their emotional and evocative power to Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s eye and to his desire to be a witness for generations to come. This work is not an end in itself but an important stage in an ongoing project. Many countries still remain to be visited. The geographical coordinates of every shot will allow other photographers to locate the same sites and continue this ambitious undertaking. Aware of the impact of his activities on the planet, Yann Arthus-Bertrand created in 2005 the GoodPlanet Foundation. The Foundation gives people access to information on the environmental, social and economic challenges we face, through programs such as GoodPlanet Info, 6 billion Others, GoodPlanet Junior and Action Carbone. 4 Santo Domingo – Dominican Republic Geneva – Switzerland – ©R. Most of the photographs in “Earth from Above” were shot from a helicopter within an altitude between 30 and 3000 meters. Approximately 4000 hours were flown.Yann Arthus-Bertrand has always worked with CANON equipment. For “Earth from Above” he uses CANON EOS-1 Ds Mark III equipped with an L series focal zoom and 16mm to 500mm range. The speed is between 1/250 and 1/1000. For the outdoor exhibition: 100 prints varnished on a sheet of dibond of 125 cmx185 cm. For the indoor exhibition: 150 photographic prints, measuring 80 cmx120 cm, in turn laminated mounted on a sheet of aluminium and framed. Weight per print: 5 kg. HEART IN VOH, NEW CALEDONIA (FRENCH OVERSEAS TERRITORY) (20°56’ S, 164°39’ E). A mangrove swamp is a semi-aquatic forest common to muddy tropical coastlines with fluctuating tides. Made up of halophytes (plants that can grow in a saline environment), with a predominance of mangroves, these swamps cover almost one-quarter of tropical coasts and a total of some 56,000 square miles (15 million hectares) worldwide. This represents only half of their original extent, because these fragile swamps are continually shrinking due to the overexploitation of resources, agricultural and urban expansion, the creation of shrimp farms, and pollution. The mangrove nonetheless remains as indispensable to sea fauna and to the equilibrium of the shoreline as it is to the local economy. New Caledonia, a group of Pacific islands covering 7,000 square miles (18,575 km2), has 80 square miles (200 k2) of a fairly low (25 to 33 feet, or 8 to 10 m) but very dense mangrove swamp, primarily on the west coast of the largest island, Grande Terre. At certain spots in the interior that are not reached by seawater except at high tides, vegetation gives way to bare, oversalted stretches called “tannes,” such as 6 this one near the town of Voh, where nature has carved this clearing in the form of a heart. During this same period, while the world's population has only doubled, the volume of fish caught and meat produced has multiplied by 5. So has the energy demand. Oil consumption has multiplied by 7, and carbon dioxide emissions, the main cause of the greenhouse effect and global warming, by 4. Since 1900, fresh water consumption has multiplied by 6, chiefly to provide for agriculture. And yet, 20% of the world's population does not have drinkable water, 40% lacks access to improved sanitation, 40% is without electricity, 826 million people are underfed, and half of humanity lives on less than A$3 a day. In other words, a fifth of the world's population live in industrialized countries, consuming and producing in excess and generating massive pollution. The remaining four-fifths live in developing countries and, for the most part, in poverty. To provide for their needs, they make heavy demands upon the Earth's natural resources, causing a constant degradation of our planet's ecosystem and limited supplies of fresh water, ocean water, forests, air, arable land, and open spaces. This is not all. By 2050, the Earth will have close to 3 billion additional inhabitants. These people will live, for the most part, in developing countries. As these countries develop, their economic growth will jockey for position with that of industrialized nations – all within the limits of the Earth’s ecosystem. The Earth's situation is not irreversible, but changes need to be made as soon as possible. We have the chance to adopt sustainable development, which allows us to improve the living conditions of the world's citizens and to satisfy the needs of generations to come. This development would be based on an economic growth respectful of both man and the natural resources of our unique planet. Such development requires improving production methods and changing our consumption habits. With the active participation of all the world's citizens, each and every person can contribute to the future of the Earth and mankind, starting right now. 9 III. CHIFFRES III.
