ENSELME verybody, nowadays, hears about “ Formation permanente, Formation continue, Recyclage” . E First of all, if the accent is new, the concept is not. Each one of us is the result of two things : heredity and environnement. The effect of environment is training : everything that we know, whether it is walking, talking, working or playing, we have acquired through training, whether it was conscious or unconscious. Achinese proverb says : “Give a man a fish, you feed him for one day, teach him how to fish, you feed him all his life.” As far as technical training is concerned, ever since its creation, Flopetrol has always brought a very strong effort on training. The total budget for 1973 is equal to 2.350.000 F which represent 2,1% of the revenus and 8,56% of the salaries. The recent French law, about which everybody talks so much, makes it an obligation for companies to spend 0,8% of salaries on “ Formation” . We therefore have a rather serious advance over the average French Industry. Rightly so, because in our business, where competition is becoming more aggressive every day, the only way to remain on top is through SERVICE QUALITY. Service quality is made of men and equipment and since in our line of business, everybody has more or less the same equipment, the difference in service quality is made by men : their know-how and their service 4attitude. We never have any problem to find volunteers to attend refresher courses. This means that operators are eager to extend or to complete their knowledge. A lot of operators actually complain that they are not given the opportunity to train. In spite of the efforts made, and we have no intention of reducing these efforts, we cannot train everybody at the same time : priorities have to be established and availability must be taken but not necessarily more efficient. Just remember two things: - You don’t train people, they train themselves. - If you teach other people what you already know, they will become better operators If these two principles are applied, we shall have no problem of “ Formation continue”. TRAIN into account. The total number of operators x days available for recycling in 1973 is 1600 which means approximalely 5 days per operator so just be patient ! In any case the formal refresher courses in Melun are not everything. There are a lot of things that we know how to do and that we have never learned formally : walking for instance or speaking, or most sports. A lot of good operators have learned technical skills by themselves and have never been to a formal training course. They learned on the spot or they were lucky to have good teachers in the field. We hear too often the remark “ I can’t learn this technique in the field : I have not been to the course in Melun” . A ctu ally M r. M a rtin is very easy going and patient but he m aintains control of seven trainees, w ith o u t seeing us but by hearing and du commandement et de la vente de nos services. M A C H T A L E R E As announced by Mr. Delmas i n this year’s first issue of ECHOFLO, in 1973 FLOPETRO L will begin a new Production Logging Service. What is Production Loggi ng ? Production Logging is a survey made in producing or injecting wells in order to define some bottom hole flow parameters, such as - Flow rate at bottom hole conditions - Productivity of any specified producing zones - Leakages in tubing or casing - Gas entries. Thepupû* These surveys are mainly made with two devices : thermometer and flowmeters run with a piano wire line. The tools were manufactured entirely by DDE, requiring several years to complete theoretical studies, prototype manufacturing and field testing. At present, this effort is compensated by the very encouraging welcome given by our large customers after the successful campaigns carried out in West Africa, Libya, and the Middle East. The future seems to be even brighter than initially foreseen. W ith a very serious attitude A. B A R B E D E T T E makes a masterful course ! J.C. Arif and I) were able to take off half an hour later and after a troublefree twelve hours’ flight, landed in Houston for re fuelling. We left the airport with no regrets as it was raining. It didn’t take much time to reach Mexico skyscrapers since they would sink slowly into the ground. City which stands - or I should say lies, for most of the houses have only one floor - at an altitude of 2000 metres and is built on a large marsh. Consequently, this town of over nine million inhabitants is mostly flat and has hardly any As the luck of the time-table made us spend the night in Mexico City, we decided to see some of the town the next morning before take-off. The temperature is pleasant all year round and, althoiigh we were in February, people were lightly dre Indians selling coconuts and vegetable marrows on the pavement 25 1 Between tw o flights we try not to live like the locals. ssed. While our cab was touring part of the city, we therefore very much appreciated the sight of innu merable miniskirted chicks strolling leisurely along the sidewalks of Mexico City’s wide avenues. Most of the streets in the city have two-way traffic with three or four lanes each way. The Avenida Insurgentes, one of the many avenues, is twenty-five kilometers long, which makes our Champs Elysées look like a country lane. Despite this modern appearance and the heavy car traffic, Mexico City remains the capital of the Incas, and Indian life, although scarce, still goes on. Our cab driver dropped us off at a local market. The smell of various spices filled the air and we had to watch our step to avoid tripping over baskets full of green coffee or water melons. Indian wo men squatted on their heels were waiting impassively for someone to buy their goods, while raggedly 26 HONDURAS dressed children played a local hide and seek game around bags of black beans. Child r en eyed us with curio sity, then begged for a few pesos, whereas adults totally ignored the “gringos” we were. I tried to take a few snaps but it’s always emba rrassing for they are very proud people and don’t like to be conside red as mere curiosities. A look at my watch told me it was 11 o’clock already and the plane was to leave in an hour and a half; had we missed it, we would not have been very popular, so we headed for the airport. Mexico-Tegucigalpa is just a flea jum p that takes three hours with a propeller plane. The company should however be noted; its name is TAN and the only drink available on board is whisky, it’s free and you can have as much as you like ! As I said, we landed at Tegucigalpa (now that you’ve read it twice, close your eyes and try to repeat it ! ), capital of Honduras. The place is right in the middle of the mountains and the way the plane had to swing around the hills to find the runway was frightening. We found that the town was com pletely different from Mexico City, very narrow streets and much poo rer people, at least at first sight. There, seven or eight year old “umchachos” made a living by shining shoes, while others, more mecha nized, peeled oranges with a small machine. A few hours later, we arrived in San Pedro Sulla and it was even hotter and damper due to the closeness of the sea. O f course, every journey has to come to an end. The next day we boarded the Piper .Aztec which was to take us to Puerto Lempira (heli copter base) and we knew it would be some weeks before we had ano ther opportunity to see more of these countries. ______S m m m Here there is no shortage o f pots. All hand-made. H ow to make your fortune in San Pedro - by shining shoes and peeling oranges on request. 27 I l/l20 LITE From D .M o A 'ypicalK ^ m p h u ■ W ., E Z A R D I en to u re ae 'f S ?‘HOUSTON : u n b ie n fie r T e x a n . • NP .* 2141S SPELAG N®t 21415 SPELAG NOS21415 SPELAG NO PUBLIC C PARIS SI AP IJ CILBUP D Received: (£.
