PREVIEW : MONTPELLIER HÉRAULT SC - GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX
Montpellier Hérault SC - Girondins de Bordeaux Feature Preview
Knocked out of European competition in midweek, Montpellier Hérault SC can now focus all their attention on their faltering title
defence, though in-form Girondins de Bordeaux are unlikely to make the champions' life easy on Sunday.
It was a whole season in the making, only five games in its dismantling as Montpellier's European dream came to an end on
Wednesday with a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal. Though the path to the Champions League group stages had already been barred to René
Girard's men, the possibility remained to continue in the Europa League - that road, though, came to a dead end in north London with
the help of ex-Montpellier forward Olivier Giroud, L1's top scorer last season.
"We lacked consistency over the 90 minutes. We played well in the first half, even if we lacked punch up front," conceded Girard, who
saw Arsenal score twice in the second half to seal his team's fate. "When we started to tire, things got tough. Perhaps this was a
game too far given the injuries and key players we're missing right now. I'm really proud of my players though. We've still got a game
to play, and if we can help our friends at Arsenal, we'll do it."
The home game against Schalke on 4 December may assist Arsenal in finishing top of Group B if Montpellier can at least hold the
German club; it will signal the end of the French club's rubbing shoulders with the continental elite, and only a significant upturn in
fortunes and form will give them another opportunity to do that next season. While nine points separate Montpellier from third-placed
Paris Saint-Germain, the champions languish just two markers clear of the bottom three, a position in which they have stagnated with
three successive 1-1 draws.
The latest of those, at Valenciennes FC last weekend, did produce positives, notably Gaëtan Charbonnier, the neo-Giroud for many
observers, scoring his first L1 goal. However, it ended with the team down to ten men for the second successive game meaning that
when Younes Belhanda, sent off against PSG the previous weekend, returns against Bordeaux, Jamel Saihi will sit out. Though
Belhanda's creativity will no doubt be welcomed by Girard, the Montpellier coach will also regret the absence of Saihi, whose
combative qualities and underrated distribution skills in midfield will be missed against a Bordeaux side in full flow. Montpellier have
already beaten Les Girondins this season, a 1-0 triumph in the Coupe de la Ligue, though it is a rare blot on an otherwise virtually
unimpeachable copybook.
As impressive on their travels as at home, Francis Gillot's side have built on the momentum created by a run of six successive
victories with which they finished last season, propelling themselves into the Europa League - a competition in which they made
progress to the knockout stages on Thursday evening. Last weekend's 1-0 defeat of Olympique de Marseille saw them rack up a third
successive league win without conceding a goal, and with other results going for them, edged them into second place in the table, just
a point off top spot.
"It's almost unexpected, as we're also playing in Europe, and that takes a lot of energy," said Gillot, who saw Yoan Gouffran score the
only goal of the game against OM, extending a 35-year wait for the visitors to win in L1 at Stade Chaban-Delmas. "Our current
position in the table is important for our confidence. It raises the prospect of an interesting end to the year. We're on a good run.
We've got the best defensive record, and Gouffran is giving us a lot. It's a positive streak even if there are two 1-0s and the 4-0 at
Lorient - I'm not sure how that one sneaked in there!"

Week 14
Montpellier Hérault SC - Girondins de Bordeaux
Montpellier Hérault SC - Girondins de Bordeaux
- HISTORY: There have been 19 L1 meetings at the Stade de la Mosson between the pair with an even split of seven wins each.
- Montpellier have won their last three home meetings with Bordeaux in all competitions - all by a 1-0 scoreline - but had lost all of the
previous four.
- Garry Bocaly's 47th-minute strike earned Montpellier a 1-0 victory at home to Bordeaux in Week 1 of the 2010-11 season, their first
L1 win over Les Girondins since 1997.
- LAST SEASON: Montpellier won 1-0 when the teams met in Week 25 thanks to John Utaka's goal ten minutes from time. The teams
played out a 2-2 draw in their Week 9 meeting at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. Cheick Tidiane Diabaté (18') and Michaël Ciani (50')
scored for the hosts with Younes Belhanda (88' pen) and Vitorino Hilton (90') equalising in a frenetic finish. Bordeaux's Marc Planus
(25') and Montpellier's Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (80') were both dismissed, the latter for a second yellow card.
- THIS SEASON: The pair met at the Stade de la Mosson in a Round of 16 encounter in the Coupe de la Ligue on 31 October with
Montpellier winning 1-0 - Jonathan Tinhan scored the only goal of the game just after the hour (61'). The hosts' Cyril Jeunechamp was
sent off for a second bookable offence eight minutes from time.
- Montpellier are one of only three teams to have beaten Bordeaux in 20 competitive fixtures this season, the others being SC Bastia
in L1 and Newcastle United in the Europa League.
- MONTPELLIER HÉRAULT SC
- GENERAL: Montpellier come into Week 14 in 14th place in Ligue 1 with 14 points from 13 games, just two points clear of the
relegation zone. They are nine points behind third-placed PSG and a further two adrift of leaders Olympique Lyonnais.
- Montpellier have won three, drawn five and lost five of their games to date. They have yet to win two league games in a row this
season and have won just one of their last six league outings (3D 2L).
- This time last season, René Girard's side were second in the table with 27 points, three points behind leaders PSG. In stark contrast
to this season, it took them until Week 28 to lose a fifth Ligue 1 game in 2011-12. This is their worst start to a top-flight campaign
since 2002-03, when they eventually finished 16th.
- René Girard's side sat 11th after Week 1 and have not been as high again since. They dropped as low as 18th after Week 3. In
contrast, they were never lower than fourth last season.
- Montpellier registered a third successive 1-1 draw when they held Valenciennes FC at the Stade du Hainaut last weekend. Gaëtan
Charbonnier's first L1 goal (15') gave the visitors the lead, but Grégory Pujol (39') equalised for the hosts. Montpellier's Jamel Saihi
was sent off on 57 minutes.
- Montpellier have scored 18 goals so far this season. Only seven clubs had scored more goals coming into the weekend. The tally
compares with 28 after 13 games last season.
- Their 1-0 home defeat to Marseille in Week 3 is the only game in which they have failed to score, while the 3-1 wins at Sochaux (Wk
4) and at home to OGC Nice (Wk 10) are the only matches in which they have scored more than twice.
- Souleymane Camara is Montpellier's leading scorer with five Ligue 1 goals, followed by Belhanda, who has four. Both players have
scored six in all competitions.
- Rémy Cabella has provided three assists. Utaka and Karim Aït-Fana have both laid on two.
- Montpellier have conceded 18 goals so far this season. Only seven clubs had let in more coming into the weekend. They have kept
just one clean sheet, in the 2-0 win at AS Nancy Lorraine in Week 7, and have let in three goals twice, in the 3-1 defeat at Reims in
Week 5 and the 3-2 home loss to Evian TG FC in Week 8.
- Cabella is the only Montpellier player to have appeared in every Ligue 1 game thus far. Geoffrey Jourdren and Camara have
featured in 12 games.
- Montpellier are second-bottom of the Ligue 1 Fair Play table, with 30 yellow cards and four reds. Jamel Saihi (v Toulouse, Wk 1 and

v Valenciennes Wk 13), Garry Bocaly (v Nice, Wk 10) and Younes Belhanda (v PSG, Week 12) have all been sent off.
- HOME FORM: Only two teams - Evian Thonon-Gaillard FC (6 points) and AS Nancy Lorraine (4 points) - have a worse home record
than Montpellier this season. The L1 champions have scored just a single win and picked up a total of six points from their six home
matches to date.
- They failed to win any of their first four matches at the Stade de la Mosson before a 3-1 victory against Nice in Week 10.
- They have scored eight times at home this season, as many as they have conceded.
- Only Bordeaux (7 goals), AC Ajaccio and Nancy (both 3 goals) have scored fewer times at home than the L1 champions.
- Camara has struck four times at home in L1 action this season.
- They have conceded eight times at home - eight teams have conceded more.
- Montpellier have picked up four points from the two home games in which they have taken a 1-0 lead. They have picked up two
points from the four home matches in which they conceded the opening goal.
-Their current home record is in stark contrast to last season, when they had the best home record in Ligue 1 en route to winning the
title. They won 16, drew two and lost one of their 19 home games in 2011-12.
- TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: Montpellier lost the traditional curtain-raiser to the season, losing 4-2 on penalties to Lyon after a 2-2
draw at the Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls, in Harrison, New Jersey.
- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: As one of France's European representatives, Montpellier were handed a bye directly through to the last 16,
where they beat Bordeaux 1-0. They will now take on Nice, at home, in the quarter-finals on November 28.
- CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Montpellier will finish bottom of Group B after losing 2-0 at Arsenal on Wednesday. The French title holders
knew they were already out of the competition before arriving in London. Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski both struck in the second
half in north London to leave Montpellier with no hope of finishing third and qualifying for the Europa League round of 32.
- Defender Mathieu Deplagne, who has yet to play in L1, made his Champions League debut in the game against Arsenal.
- René Girard's side kicked-off their campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Arsenal, but then drew 2-2 away to Schalke 04. However, a
2-1 home loss to Olympiacos was followed by a 3-1 reverse in Greece.
- LAST SEASON: Montpellier won the L1 title for the first time in the club's history, finishing on 82 points, three clear of PSG.
- They were beaten 2-1 at home by FC Lorient in the round of 16 of the Coupe de la Ligue, and surprised 1-0 by CFC Ajaccio in the
quarter-finals of the French Cup.
- SUMMER TRANSFERS IN: Emanuel Herrera from Unión Española (CHI), Anthony Mounier from OGC Nice, Daniel Congré from
Toulouse FC, Gaëtan Charbonnier from Angers SCO.
- OUT: Olivier Giroud to Arsenal (ENG), Geoffrey Dernis to Stade Brestois 29 (freedom of contract), Grégory Lacombe to Clermont
Foot, William Aho Abou to AC Arles-Avignon, Fodé Koïta on loan to Le Havre,
-TEAM NEWS: Vitorino Hilton (adductors) may sit out; Aït-Fana has a knee injury which will likely see him only return in 2013.
- SUSPENSIONS: Cyril Jeunechamp will serve a one-match ban after this game having accumulated three bookings in less than ten
competitive domestic fixtures.
- Belhanda is available after serving a ban for his red card against PSG, but Saihi is suspended following his dismissal at
Valenciennes.
- TRIVIA
- Jeunechamp is accused of having punched a journalist of sports daily L'Equipe following his team's draw at Valenciennes. His
actions were condemned by club president Louis Nicollin as being "intolerable", but the veteran defender was an unused substitute
against Arsenal.
- Yanga-Mbiwa recently penned a contract extension through to 2015, adding two years to his existing deal, though it is widely
expected he will leave the club next summer with the French international having publicly declared his desire to quit the club "in a

good way".
- GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX
- GENERAL: Bordeaux come into Week 14 in second place with 24 points from 13 games, just a single point off top spot, though
leaders Olympique Lyonnais have a game in hand.
- Bordeaux won 1-0 at home to Olympique de Marseille in Week 13 courtesy of Yoan Gouffran's 52-minute strike. The visitors' Lucas
Mendes was sent off (90+4').
- Bordeaux have won their last five games in all competitions, and their last three in L1 in which they have not conceded a goal.
- Bordeaux have not conceded a goal in L1 in 304 minutes since Wahbi Khazri struck in the 56th-minute of SC Bastia's 3-1 home win
over Les Girondins in Week 10.
- The reverse in Corsica is Bordeaux's sole league loss of the season and they have been beaten just three times in 20 outings in all
competitions.
- Montpellier in the Coupe de la Ligue (see above) and Newcastle United in the Europa League are the only other sides to have
triumphed against Les Girondins in the 2012-13 campaign.
- Bordeaux have lost one of their last 20 L1 fixtures (12 W 7D).
- Prior to losing at Bastia, their previous league loss came at SM Caen in Week 31 last season (1-0).
- Bordeaux have lost just four times - including last season at Montpellier - in Ligue 1 in 2012 so far.
- Bordeaux's 4-0 victory at FC Lorient in Week 12 was their biggest league win of the season, and matched their previous biggest
triumph of the campaign, a 4-0 home win against Club Brugge in the Europa League.
- Before embarking on their winning streak, they had won just one of the previous eight, picking up nine points in that time.
-This time last season, Bordeaux were 14th in the table with 13 points, and just two wins to their name. This remains their best start to
a season since 2009-10, when, as defending champions, they topped the table after 13 games with 28 points.
- Francis Gillot's side topped the table after Week 1 and were permanent fixtures in the top six before dropping to eighth in Week 10.
- Bordeaux have scored 18 goals so far this season, giving them the joint eighth-best attack (with Montpellier, OGC Nice and Stade
Rennais FC) coming into the weekend. They have failed to score at all in two games, the goalless draws at PSG (Wk 3) and at
Valenciennes (Wk 5).
- Gouffran has hit the net six times in L1, Ludovic Obraniak four. Gouffran has a total of ten goals in all competitions, having also
scored four times in the Europa League.
- Obraniak and Benoît Trémoulinas have provided three assists, while Jussie and Jaroslav Plasil have each provided two.
- Bordeaux have conceded ten goals so far this season, the joint-best goals against record in the division with PSG and AS
Saint-Etienne. They have kept seven clean sheets. The defeat at Bastia was the first time they had conceded three goals in a league
game since the 5-4 win at Lille on February 12.
- Cédric Carrasso, Mariano and Obraniak are the only Bordeaux players to have started all 12 league games thus far. Gouffran and
Saivet have featured in 12 league matches.
- Ludovic Sané is the only Bordeaux player to have been sent off this season. He was dismissed in the 1-1 draw with OGC Nice (Wk
4). Les Girondins have also received 21 yellow cards in their 12 games to date.
AWAY FORM: Only PSG (12 points, goal difference +6) have a better away record than Bordeaux in L1 this season. The
south-westerners have amassed 12 points (3W 3D, goal difference +5) from their seven trips so far.
- Their sole defeat came at Bastia in Week 10.
- Gouffran has struck three times away from home.
- Bordeaux have won all three away games in which they have opened the scoring. They have conceded the opening goal twice,
coming back to claim a point on one occasion.

- TRIVIA
- Coach Francis Gillot recently declared he would "wait and see what happens in the next two months" before deciding on whether or
not to extend his contract, which expires next summer. "I would like to continue with Bordeaux, a prestigious club, but not just under
any old conditions," he said.
- Top scorer Gouffran is also out of contract in June 2013. The player recently insisted "the door is open" to an extension while
Nicolas de Tavernost, who represents the club's owners, TV channel M6, said he had "given [club president] Jean-Louis Triaud the
means to [agree a deal] if he so wishes".
- De Tavernost also stated his desire for Gillot to make up his mind about his future, saying: "I'd like his decision to come quickly."
Montpellier Hérault SC
- The club was founded in 1919 as Stade Olympique Montpelliérain and adopted its current name, Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, in
1989.
- The 2012-13 campaign is Montpellier's 20th in the French top flight. Last season the club won its first-ever Ligue 1 crown, finishing a
nail-biting season with 82 points, three points clear of second-placed title favourites PSG. Their surprise fifth-placed finish in season
2010-11 was the club's best since they achieved their record placing of third in 1987-88.
- Montpellier's championship squad has remained intact with the sole exception of Olivier Giroud, whose co-league-topping (alongside
PSG's Nene) 21 goals leading to his summer move to the EPL's Arsenal. Moroccan playmaker Younes Belhanda, rumoured to be a
target for Inter, and captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, a target for AC Milan, look set to play out the upcoming season before moving on.
- Montpellier finished their championship season with 25 wins, seven draws and just six losses and the league's best defence with just
34 goals conceded.
- Coach René Girard brought in three new signings - defender Daniel Congré from Toulouse, attacking midfielder Anthony Mounier
