Rose rouge, Rose blanche
Chen Bao perd sa virginité alors qu’il fait ses études en Europe. Dès lors, il connaîtra peu de
femmes et n’aura que des relations superficielles. Seules deux femmes auront une réelle
importance dans sa vie. De retour à Shanghai, il fait la connaissance de Jiao Rui, la femme de
son meilleur ami. Il en tombe amoureux et l’appelle sa “rose rouge”. Mais la passion débridée
qui les unit et l’amour fou qu’ils vivent lui fait peur. Il la quitte et quelque temps plus tard
épouse En Li, jeune fille fade et docile qu’il appelle sa “rose blanche”. Il n’éprouve pour elle
que du mépris. Quelles émotions peut-on ressentir quand toute sa vie est soumise au seul
devoir de respectabilité et à sa carrière professionnelle? Lorsque ses besoins de tendresse
sont trop forts, il fréquente les prostituées, entre déjeuner et réunion de travail. Ces deux
femmes représentent les deux pôles de son monde sentimental. Il ne pourra en fin de compte
jamais combler le vide laissé par sa “rose rouge”.
Stanley Kwan a su avec ironie cerner la personnalité de cet homme égocentrique. La
collaboration avec Christopher Doyle donne au récit un style narratif suggestif, vibrant
d’émotion.
Chen bao loses his virginity while he is a student in Europe. From then onwards, he meets
very few women and only have superficial relationships. Only two women will really count
in his life. Once back to Shanghai, he meets Jiao Rui, his best friend's wife. He falls in love
with her and calls her his 'red rose'. But he is scared by the unbridled passion and the mad
love they feel for each other. He leaves her and soon after marries En Li, a dull docile young
woman whom he calls his 'white rose'. He only feels despise for her. What kind of emotions
could one feel when subjected to the sheer duty of respectability and professional career?
When his need of tenderness becomes too urging, he sees prostitutes, between lunch and
professional meetings. These two women represent the two poles of his sentimental world.
Finally, he will never be able to fill the gap left by his 'red rose'.
Stanley Kwan has approached with irony the personality of this eccentric man. His
collaboration with Christopher Doyle gives the narrationa suggestive style vibrant with
emotion.
