Friends of Boroume 2015 fundraiser
We are very happy to announce that Friends of
Boroume held its second fundraiser to support
BOROUME’s mission on April 29th. Working with
our beloved volunteer Nick Politakis, the group was
able to organize a dinner for all those that support
BOROUME at Ikaros Restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. During the dinner, Alexander Theodoridis, founding member of BOROUME spoke with those attending the dinner via SKYPE and answered questions about
BOROUME as well as what is going on in Greece. We are very moved by the support we have received and
a big thank you goes out to those that support us from far away. Finally, a special thank you goes out to Nick
who is the heart, soul and driving force of the fundraising event.
The German Deputy Foreign Minister visits the House
of BOROUME
The German Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr. Michael Roth, visited the house
of BOROUME as part of his official visit to Greece accompanied by the
German ambassador to Greece, Mr. Peter Schoof. His goal in visiting us
was to learn more about a Greek NGO that helps people in need on a daily
basis. During the visit we informed Mr. Roth about the rapid increase in the
number of people who are facing food insecurity in Greece and that most of those people would rather have
a job so they can purchase their own food rather than get a free meal.
We also explained that BOROUME is one of the many new Greek NGO’s that have been created the last few
years by citizens who want to do something to help their fellow man thereby creating a renewal that did not
previously exist in Greek society.
We felt honored to have the opportunity to talk about the current
situation in Greece with an important foreign dignitary and to show
him that there are Greek organizations, such as BOROUME, which
have been created by citizens who have the imagination, passion,
enthusiasm and desire for hard work to provide innovative social
support systems that could serve as models for other European
countries.
Frezydem donates milk to children in need
We would like to thank Frezyderm ABEE for their donation of 6610 cartons
of organic Frezylac milk. With BOROUME’s help, the milk went to 12
recipient organizations that serve children. The milk went to the social
services of the following municipalities as well as charities all over the Attica

En 2011, Xenia Papastavrou créait l’association
Boroume, afin de collecter auprès des restaurateurs et
des commerces, le maximum de nourriture fraîche,
qui, initialement, devait finir à la poubelle. Depuis,
son association a permis de fournir 2,5 millions de
repas aux plus démunis, dans tout le pays. Mais la
tâche est immense.
Il y a quatre ans, Xenia Papastavrou, qui était alors journaliste, s’attable dans une taverne, dans la
banlieue d’Athènes, pour se restaurer. « Ici, on est
toujours très généreux en pain. Comme la corbeille
était remplie, j’ai demandé au restaurateur un sac
plastique pour ramener cette nourriture chez moi. Je
ne voulais pas gaspiller, tout simplement. Quelques
minutes plus tard, le patron sortait de sa cuisine avec
un gros sac rempli de pain qui n’avait pas été touché.
Il s’apprêtait à le mettre à la poubelle. J’ai tout pris,
me disant que les plus démunis, qui sont de plus en
plus nombreux depuis le début de la crise, seraient
bien contents d’avoir accès à cette nourriture. Et je...

When Nefeli Vitzilaiou met Xenia Papastavrou, a
member of the BOROUME team, she learned all that
she needed to know about how a wedding reception
can be socially responsible. One way to accomplish
this is to donate the large quantities of leftover food
from the reception to those in need. BOROUME can
help in doing this by being the link between you and
the charities that serve the needy. How can this be
done? Very simply as long as you plan for it!
How often do people offer the food from wedding
receptions to BOROUME?...
More and more couples from all over Greece get in
touch with us and offer the leftover food from their
wedding receptions. This past summer we saved food
from over 50 receptions in Athens, the islands and
other towns.

Vikos Street Relays support BOROUME
With the slogan is “You can go faster by yourself
but we can go further if everyone joins together”,
the organizers of Vikos Street Relays is calling all
the runners, young and old, to take part on Sunday,
April 26th in Marousi and bring a piece of fruit to be
donated to those in need. The BOROUME team will
be there to take the “torch” and will provide all the
fruit to the Marousi Social Services who in turn...

The Agrinio Municipal Food Market
needs support
300 Families from Nikaia
need our support
We recently spoke with Father Dimitrios from the
Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia and we were told
that there is an immediate need for food so that the
church can continue supporting 300 needy families
of the municipality.
Specifically, the following foods are needed:
• Evaporated milk
• Rice
• Dry beans
• Tomato sauce
• Sugar
• Cookies
• Chocolates
• Orzo
If anyone can provide any of the above items, please
call the House of BOROUME at 210 3237805 or
Father Dimitrios at 6932 696342.
Mrs. Makri is the person in charge of the Agrinio
Social Services and she called us and told us that
there are more and more families in her municipality needing support. The municipality along with the
Metropolis of Aitolia and Akarnania support about
2000 families by offering them food, clothing and
shoes as well as counseling services.
