GOTAN PROJECT
Gotan Project Gotan being a play upon "tango" consists of a core nucleus of three
French musicians: Phillippe Cohen Solal, Eduardo Makaroff and Christoph H. Muller. Several
exceptional Argentinian musicians join them: vocalist Cristina Vilallonga, pianist Gustavo
Beytelmann and bandoneon (the tango accordion) player Nini Flores. Their album La
Revancha Del Tango (XL) was released in 2001 and quickly became a favourite with
discerning DJs and listeners across Europe and Latin America.
What makes Gotan Project's take on tango so attractive? It wasn ¯t si mpl y t hat t hey br ought

a fresh approach and wit to tango. What Gotan pioneered was a way to build bridges
between tango and Jamaican dub music. Dub music has arguably been the most radical
music form of the last quarter century spawning everything from hip-hop to ambient drift
and Gotan Project realised by employing dub's ability to distort and colour sound they
could reshape tango while retaining its weary, soulful beauty.
SAINT GERMAIN
St Germain confirmed his reputation on the burgeoning French electro scene by releasing
his first album, "Boulevard", on Laurent Garnier's independent label F.Communications, in
July 1995. The deft musical mix on this debut album caused as great a stir on the French
jazz scene as it did in the electro world, blurring the boundaries between jazz and electro
beats.
In fact, "Boulevard" garnered rave reviews around the world, even in electro heartland in
the States, and went on to sell a staggering 200,000 copies.
Following his phenomenal success in the album charts, St Germain went on to make his first
live appearance in December '95, performing at TransMusicales in Rennes. Meanwhile, as
his name gained celebrity status on the electro scene, remix invitations came flooding in
from all quarters.
Then, in an abrupt about-turn, Ludovic decided what was missing in his work was the
fusion element that had inspired him from the start of his career. Eager to meet other
musicians and explore new musical horizons, St Germain decided to quit electro specialist
label F.Com and sign to the legendary jazz label Blue Note instead.
"Tourist" was released on the international market in September 2000 and by the summer
of 2001 sales had topped 1.5 million!

DANYEL WARO
Few people outside the Reunion Island have heard about Maloya. It is a sort of Reunionese
blues through which plantation workers have long been singing their joys and woes.
Living in the middle of sugarcane fields high up in Saint Paul, Danyel Waro is probably the
island ¯ s most f a mous mal oya si nger, e mpl oyi ng tr aditi onal i nstr u ment s such as t he kayam,
a flat instrument made from cane flower stems and filled with saffron seeds; the bob
(called birimbau in Brazil), a musical bow attached to a calabash for resonance; the rouler,
big drum made from barrels with a cowskin head: to sum up, a variety of traditional maloya
instruments.
In his songs, Danyel Waro speaks of love and death using a popular yet pleasant
vocabulary that urban listeners have often forgotten. He creates unexpected, beautiful and
powerful imagery and, most importantly, feels the convergence between words and music
that makes great songs.
A musician as well as poet, Danyel Waro can sing Creole with emotions beyond belief.
DENEZ PRIGENT
Denez Prigent discovered the Breton language with his grandmother in what he calls a
determining moment: °I f elt i n t une wit h my gr andpar ent s, wit h t he deep peace t hey f elt
as they listened to the rhythms of nature, and I was totally dazzled by my grandmother ¯ s
voice when she expressed herself spontaneously in song. ± At t he age of 14, Denez began
to learn the art of kan ha diskan.
In 1987, he and singer Alain Lecl¨ ¨r e won fi r st pri ze at t he Kan ar Bobl, t he most pr esti gi ous
singing competition in Brittany.
In 1992, Denez Prigent broke with tradition by taking the risk of performing at
TransMusicales for a rock audience, not the usual target for kan ha diskan. The concert was
a triumph, opening the door to the great musical events of France and Europe.
Denez recorded his first album as an a cappella work, made up of essentially traditional
songs.
His second album however was entirely of his own compositions. Denez brought together
musicians from different genres including improvised music, electronic music, traditional
Irish and Scottish music, rock, and hip-hop. Vocals, traditional instruments, prototype
Electro-acoustic instruments are mixing in harmony, displaying a subtle sense of balance.
His last album was released in 2003.

BIKINI MACHINE
Bikini Machine has really achieved something: going against the grain, they ¯ ve made ol d
from new! The idea might seem crazy, but it soon shows itself to be a real formula for hits,
the perfect blend of vintage sounds and electro power.
But don ¯t get i t wr ong: Bi ki ni Machi neare not another example of fashion following retro
merchants. Their references are spot on playing through valve amps, and with an innate
sense of melody. Their passion for the sixties does not stop there, as their stage name was
inspired by B-movie ®Doct r Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine¯.
The sub-culture of 50s/ 60s America is used simply as their blank canvas, Bikini Invasions,
failed Intergalactic voyages, hymns to Santa Claus, belated Beatniks, nothing ®s spar ed, and
yet Bikini Machine inject life into the formula. A blast of Danelectro, or a groovy Farfisa,
and the Machine creates its own universe.
