39 How must n equal nonoverlapping circles (spherical caps) be packed on a sphere so that the angular diameter of the circles will be as great as possible? In the paper a short account is presented on the results of our research, executed in connection with this problem, in which improved arrangements have been constructed by means of structural mechanics (by moving the graph) and new packings of tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral rotational symmetries have been given by consulting with virus morphology. An illustrated survey is also presented on the occurrence of spherical circle-packings (point-distributions) in nature and practice. It has been observed in nature that many micro-objects have spherical shape such that points, particles or holes are distributed on the surface of the sphere. In some cases the rule of the distribution can be mathematically formulated. Such a case has led to the Tammes problem: to arrange n points on the unit sphere so as to maximize the minimum distance between any two of the points. Of course this problem is the same as the problem of the densest spherical circle-packing: to determine the largest angular diameter of n equal circles (spherical caps) which can be packed on the surface of a sphere without overlapping. Solutions of the problem are known only for n = 3 to 12 and 24 but for many values of n there are only conjectures (n = 13 to 23,25 to 60,80,110,119, 120, 122). A comprehensive survey on the Tammes problem can be found, e.g., in [Fejes T&h 1964, 19721 and on recent results in [Melnyk 19771. In the investigations, two terms are important: the density and the graph of a circlepacking. The density of packing is defined as the ratio of the total area of the surface of the spherical caps and the surface area of the sphere. The graph is defined so that the vertices of the graph are the centres of the spherical circles and the edges of the graph are the shorter arcs of great circles joining the centres of the touching spherical circles. Thus, all the edges of the graph of a packing of equal circles are of equal length. For example, the densest packing of 24 equal circles and its graph may be seen in Figure 1. In this journal [Tarnai 19801, we made a promise that we would report on the problem of the densest spherical circle-packing and how it had arisen in a metal statue set up in Hungary. However, we have meanwhile conducted a research into this field [Tarnai 1983a, 1983b, 1983c, 19834, 1983e, 1983f’J and found a wonderful world behind this problem, so we can also report on some additional things. The aim of this paper is to make a brief survey of presences of the spherical circle-packings in nature and practice, to give a short account of the results of our research and to call attention to the relation between the Tammes problem and the rigidity of graphs. The Dutch botanist Tammes, who raised the problem bearing his name, discovered that the pores on certain spherical pollen grains endeavour to be dispersed as far as possible from one another, and so the pores are distributed more or less uniformly [Tammes 19301. Such pollen grains are shown by scanning electron micrographs in [Riollet 19761(Figures 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). A similar tendency, that is, approximately uniform arrangement of nearly equal circles on the sphere seems to predominate at some species of radiolarians [Kling 19781,as it may be seen in Figures 7, 8 and 9. Distribution of the openings on the spherical shell of the foraminifer Globigerinoides sacculifera (Figures 10 and 11) and arrangement of the spicules of the sponge Aurora rowi (Figures 12,13,14 and 15) also show a related character [Kirkpatrick 19751. Similar properties can be discovered in the patterns formed by the sterigmata in the conidiophore of the mould fungus Aspergillus (Figure 16) [Fujita 19711, the small outgrowths on blood platelets (Figure 17), the cells of the green algae Volvox in their aggregation (Figure 18) and elsewhere (e.g., at compound eyes of insects, but their shape is not exactly spherical). An analogous arrangement of the structural units can be observed at icosahedral viruses (Figures 19 and 20). Although Goldberg has shown that the arrangement of the structural units on the surface of icosahedral viruses does not constitute the solution of the Tammes problem [Goldberg 19671, in certain cases the shape of virus coats could be mathematically described as solution of a generalization of the Tammes problem [Molnar 19751, in 40 41 Tammes [Molnar 19751, dans laquelle chacun des cercles egaux a un ((espace propre),, c’est-a-dire un cercle tangent d’un rayon donne. La morphologie des virus icosaedriques, toutefois, est en relation etroite avec un autre domaine: la geometric des dames geodesiques [Coxeter 19721. which each one of the equal circles has <<space-claim)), that is, a tangent circle of a given radius. Morphology of icosahedral viruses, however, is in closer relationship with another field: geometry of geodesic domes [Coxeter 19721. In practice, presumably striving for simplicity people tried to obtain relatively dense packing of equal circles on the sphere mainly so that the centres of the circles were fitted to small circles of the sphere, lying in parallel planes, as in the golf ball in Figure 21 or Laser’s geodynamic satellite in Figure 22 [Laser 19761. In many cases, in order that the packing be more simple, equality of the circles is given up as for the printing ball of the IBM typewriter (Figure 23) and the camera of Polyvision moving pictures (Figure 24). However, we can also find examples for multi-symmetric packings of equal circles on the sphere. For instance, the golf ball in Figure 21 also shows an octahedral symmetry and the star sphere of the first projector planetarium set up in Munich in 1924 (Figure 25) has icosahedral symmetry. These types of arrangements of circles or points can also be found in architecture. Distribution of points along the small circles of the sphere prevails and it has been applied for hundreds of years. Such a pattern is formed, e.g., by the skyligths openings on the spherical domes of the Turkish baths in Budapest built in the 16th century (Figures 26,27 and 28). In these arrangements, however, the diameter of the circles drawn around the points without overlapping decreases in meridian direction towards the zenith of the sphere. Such a system can be constructed so that each internal circle touches six others. As it was noted by Spunt, Frank Lloyd Wright applied this type of pattern in a dome for the Johnsons Wax Building [Spunt 19761. Recently, beside the bipolar arrangements treated above, multipolar or multi-symmetric ones are also employed. For example, the system of equal circles on the Fly Eye domes in Figures 29 and 30, developed by R.B. Fuller, have a multipolar (icosahedral) character. It should be noted that by giving up the planes of symmetry of the arrangements in Figures 29 and 30, the minimum distance between the centres of the circles can be increased. By his modular dome structures (Figures 31 and 32), Spunt has realized a packing of equal circles on a part of the sphere, in which each internal circle touches four other [Spunt 19761. So he has obtained a pattern similar to that formed by the dimples on the golf ball in the neighbourhood of the vertex of the spherical octahedron. Spuntdeveloped his structures and packed the spherical cap panels in two layers. These two layers of equal circles with the equal connecting elements resulted in a covering system on a part of the sphere (Figure 33). 11existe Cgalement dans les beaux-arts des exemples de juxtaposition de cercles sur la sphere. There are examples for the spherical circle-packing in the fine arts, too. An old example from the very beginning of the 16th century is due to the enigmatic Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. On the left wing of his Garden of Delights triptych there is the Fountain of Life (Figure 34) whose bottom part is a sphere. On the sphere - apart from the big circular opening - nonoverlapping equal circles are closely packed (Figure 35). An excellent coloured reproduction of this part of the painting may be found in [Marijnissen 19721. In 1974, in front of the Biological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged, a metal statue due to the sculptor Balint Jozsa was set up to symbolize biology (the architect was Istvan Tarnai). The statue essentially is a sphere having a diameter of 3 m, composed of 536 equal truncated conical shells (Figure 36). The author took part in this work as a structural consulting engineer and this was the first time he had met the Tammes problem. For this statue, namely, it was necessary to pack the shell elements as densely as possible in order to obtain increased structural stiffness and in this way it was possible to decrease the wall thickness of the shell elements. The shape of the statue, in fact, is a result of a random packing of the shell elements since at that time we could not suggest a good packing technique yet. The obtained circle-system on the sphere resulted in density 0.8235. Before constructing the statue a model of a diameter of 74 cm was produced of 485 elements (Figure 37). The density was 0.8141 in this case. Only some applications were mentioned here. The spherical circle-packing applications, e.g., in information theory, stereochemistry and elsewhere. The following methods have been developed to make constructions for dense packing of nonoverlapping equal circles on the sphere: a) axially symmetric packing [Goldberg 19801, b) multi-branched helical (spiral) packing [Szekely 19741, c) multi-symmetric packing [Robinson 1969, Tarnai 1983c, 1983e], d) construction of new packing by moving the graph of an existing packing [Danzer 1963, Tarnai 1983a]. But, the first applications of all the methods enumerated here can essentially be found already in an early paper de [Schiitte 195 11:for instance, method a) for n = 16, method b) for n = 15, method c) for n = 24 and method d) for n = 14 where the packing was obtained by moving the graph consisting of the edges and vertices of the spherical rhombic ,dodecahedron. From the point of view of structural topology, method d) seems to be the most interesting one. The principle of the method is due to Danzer [Danzer 19631, who has considered the graph so that the edges can rotate freely around the vertices and the edge-lengths can vary freely but simultaneously and in the same proportion. He as defined the graph to be rigid if the edge-system with the mentioned properties cannot admit motions other than isometries. Danzer’s idea is: if the graph is not rigid then the edge-length can, in general, be increased; that is, the packing can, in general, be improved. In our investigation the graph of the circle-packing is modelled as a structure consisting of equal straight bars and frictionless pin joints lying on the surface of the sphere. Change in length of the bars is not considered as a free motion, but is attributed instead to a separate influence, e.g., a change in temperature. The structure is characterized by its geometric or compatibility matrix G containing b rows and 2j-3 columns where b is the number of bars and j is the number of joints. With the help of the geometric matrix of this structure, it is ascertained whether the bar-lengths can simultaneously be increased in the same proportion without inner forces. If it is so then it can be done until additional bars appear and the ._..--..-- --.----/ - - 42 43 de barres simultanement dans la meme proportion sans aucune force interne. The circle-packing is, in general, improvable if b = p(G) 5 2j-3 or both b > p(G) and p(G) < 2j-3 hold, where p(G) denotes the rank ofG. An improvement of the packing may be expected, for instance, if the graph contains no triangles. The details may be found in [Tarnai 1983a] in which, by this method, packing of 18, 27, 34, 35 and 40 circles on a sphere has been improved. This method has also been used for improvement of packing of 19 circles [Tarnai 1983f$ In the case of n = 18, the graph of the packing conjectured to be the best one and that of the packing improved by its motion may be seen in simplified stereographic projection in Figures 38a and b, respectively. It could be demonstrated by a physical model built from ((Gee-D-Stix,, bars and joint, that a small increase in the edge-length of the graph in Figure 38a turns it into a finite mechanism (Figure 39). In this model the edge-length of the graph is constant but the radius of the sphere is changeable. We mention here that by method c), using mainly the regular triangular skew tessellations on the polyhedral surface of the regular tetrahedron, octahedron and icosahedron [Coxeter 19721, spherical packing of equal circles with rotational symmetries of these regular polyhedra can be constructed. On this basis, we have given new packings for n = 54,72, 132 [Tarnai 1983~1,n = 36,72,180 [Tarnai 198341, n = 78,96,108,114,144,150,192,198, 270, 282, 360, 372, 480,492 [Tarnai 1983e]. By combining methods c) and d), we have improved results for n = 80 [Tarnai 1983b] and n = 122 [Tarnai 1983a], but the obtained packings can further be improved by moving the graphs. It should be noted, finally, that a packing with octahedral or icosahedral rotational symmetries is also a packing in the elliptic plane [Fejes T&h 19651. The Tammes problem seems partly to be an interdisciplinary one, since the problem itself was raised by botany, formulated and in some cases solved by mathematics, but in many cases structural mechanics and virus morphology helped to construct good approximations. Summarizing the results up to n = 60, Figure 40 shows lower bounds of the extremal density of packings given by the best constructions until now and upper bounds given by a formula of [Robinson 19611. The Code in the first block of each bibliographic item consist of three parts, separated by dashes. The first letter indicates whether the item is a Book, Article, Preprint or Course notes. The middle letter(s) indicates whether the piece was intended primarily for an audience of Mathematicians, Architects or Engineers. The final letter(s) indicates if the piece touches on one or more of the principal themes of structural topology: Geometry (in general), Polyhedra, Juxtaposition or Rigidity. The key-words or other annotations in the third column are intended to show the relevance of the work to research in structural topology, and do not necessarily reflect its overall contents or the intent of the author.
