St. Malo Co-Operative:
What a success story!
On March 7, 1938, after many
months of research and discussion, a group of St. Malo residents met to discuss the idea of
forming a “Consumer Cooperative” store with timberyard.
The “co-operative” financial
movement (Caisse) had a successful launching in 1937, and
Father Arthur Benoit felt the community was very capable of purchasing materials & machinery cooperatively in order to operate a profitable store and timberyard at less than what the costs currently
were. This “Co-operative” would also assist the community with projects, including new pews for the
for the St. Malo Catholic Church.
These men, with their strong conviction
for success and the support of the Caisse
& community, made the decision to form
the St. Malo Co-operative that evening. A
Board of Directors was elected; Philippe
Lambert became President, Arthur Benoit
became Secretary and Octave Gosselin
was the first Manager. This first Board of
Directors had to mortgage their personal
property to obtain the $10,000 in capital
needed to start up operations. These
were brave pioneers willing to take the
personal risks on behalf of the commuThe former St. Malo Co-op building which was replaced by the building
nity.

St. Malo Chamber of Commerce
President’s Report
Spring has arrived and we are busy!
The Chamber Directors have been working on several projects this winter which we will be continuing on this spring/summer.
Volunteer Award Night – Saturday, May 12. Come out and enjoy another evening of recognition for those who do so much for our communities. It will be another wonderful evening in St.
Malo.
Lamppost Project Phase II – You may have seen some wooden markers on the east side of St.
Malo Street. This is where our five lampposts will be erected this summer. In partnership, the
LUD and Chamber members are organizing everything that has to be done to complete this
project. We have lots to do.
Planters & Benches – This town beautification project is again a joint project with the LUD. We
will place Barkman Concrete planters and benches in the main walking area of downtown St.
Malo to add beauty and a place to rest when out enjoying our wonderful town.
On behalf of the Chamber Directors a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped the Chamber
with the Family Hockey Tournament in March. We couldn’t have done it without you!
In closing here is something to think about: Are you appreciative for what you have?
—Lorraine Jones-Racine, President

Blast from the Past:
From page 1…
In November, 1939 the St. Malo Co-operative
was incorporated and member shares were sold
for $5 each, a huge sum in those days.
The St. Malo Co-op prospered, the first telephone & cash register were installed in 1942.
Then in 1944, the members decided to expand
and purchase Alphonse Goulet’s store on Main
Street. Growth and success continued and in
1956, an extension was built onto the Co-op to
accommodate the booming business.
In 1963 the Co-op celebrated its 25th year with a
special celebration and “sale”. Then-President
Marcel Colette suggested to the younger generation that they ”...follow the pattern set by our
fathers to forge ahead with renewed convictions
and vigour so that when our children celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of our St. Malo Cooperative we shall be proud of the monument
we will be leaving behind.”
The St. Malo Co-operative did exactly that! It
forged ahead with a conviction that saw the Coop celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 1988, build a
new store in 1989, pave the parking lot, expand
its operations, add an office & gasoline pumps
and continue to grow and succeed.
Above, St. Malo Co-op employees
in the 1980s, before the current
store was built (left to right):
Lorraine Gobeil, Noel Carriere,
Jacqueline Forest, Alphonsine
Lariviere, Rita Frechette, Marc
Saucier, Andree Gosselin and
Manager Gilbert Bourgeois. Below, the Co-op parking lot is paved
and at right: Adonias Duval’s retirement from the Co-op in 1988.
Expecting
Visitors?
There were many challenges along the way and
the road was often difficult, but what counts is
where the St. Malo Co-op is TODAY and the
plans in place for TOMORROW!
There are many, many people (far too many to
list in this short article) who are responsible for
the success of the St. Malo Co-operative on
this, the eve of its 75th anniversary celebrations
in 2013.

for the common good
of each and every
member!
