A. Grafe : World War One Poetry as Experience
The body of English-language poetry associated – sometimes problematically – with World War One is one of the
largest and best-known in the whole of English literature. It seems appropriate during these centenary years that
we should engage fruitfully with this poetry. English-language World War One poetry may be read as a triangular
relationship involving an encounter between history, literary form (poetry), and “war as inner experience” (after
the title of a book by Ernst Junger). This is in some sense a post-Romantic reading of war and of such war poetry,
in which stress will be laid on the subjectivity of the poet finding himself in – or willing himself into –
circumstances hithertofore entirely unknown to him. Yet, despite all this, World War One, is not just literature: it
is not pretty words, it challenges our expectations of what language can do, and seeks to say the unsayable. That
search is intrinsic to the inner experience of writing and reading such poetry. We will attend in particular to
soldier poets, but also read women poets and non-combattants, in order to make sure that the perspective
proposed is as broad as possible. Exaltation, initiation, the awakening of human capacities, be they intellectual,
physical, spiritual or psychological, the search for meaning, and a feeling of huge freedom are all part of the
experience of war and of the poetry of war. Here is a non-exclusive list of poets whose work we will look at on
the course: Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, Wilfred Own, Edmund Blunden, Edward Thomas,
Ivor Gurney, Isaac Rosenberg, David Jones, Laurence Binyon, Thomas Hardy, May Wedderburn Cannan.

Ce séminaire propose un regard historique et esthétique sur le rapport entre ce croisement d’art et d’industrie
qu’est le cinéma hollywoodien avec la société et la culture américaine. On abordera l’histoire du cinéma
américain et le passage de la période dite « classique » à la période post-classique ; les films américains face à
l’histoire, et surtout celle de la guerre froide et la guerre du Vietnam ; les particularités des genres
cinématographiques à travers une étude du film d’horreur ; et le système et la signification des stars
hollywoodiennes.

Ce séminaire se propose de présenter un panorama des théories contemporaines en traductologie. Les étudiants
seront amenés, sous forme d’exposés/comptes rendus d’ouvrages/articles significatifs en traductologie, à balayer
des approches et courants traductologiques majeurs.
Il s’agira également d’affiner la perception que les étudiants ont de la traduction, par la pratique du commentaire
de traduction (anglais→français). Cette préparation aux études sur corpus consistera à observer un texte anglais
et une/des traduction(s) afin d’être capable de nommer les opérations mises en œuvre en utilisant une
terminologie propre à la traductologie et d’émettre un jugement sur différentes traductions d’un même texte.

J.-P. Rosaye – The Victorian Predicament (The History of Ideas in Britain in the 19th Century)
John Stuart Mill said of S. T. Coleridge (1772-1834) and Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) that they were the two
seminal minds of the nineteenth century. Admittedly, these authors revealed the formidable intellectual
directions taken by Britain in the wake of the industrial and the French revolutions. But they also suggested that
the novelty of the times demanded a major spiritual, intellectual and political adaptation.
Matters were given a more precise shape during the Victorian Age (1837-1901) when forces of change clashed
with traditional settings, and developed into an excruciating opposition between science and religion. The
Victorians, accordingly, tried to formulate possible answers to reduce the predicament they were facing.
Utilitarianism, naturalism and idealism punctuated the period with ideas, men, and doctrines, until the
emergence of a new paradigmatic shift at the beginning of the twentieth century set things, as it were, to right.
The aim of the seminar will be to explore the Victorian Predicament, while hinting at one recent academic turn
reassessing the importance of the British Idealist Movement in the nineteenth century. The intellectual solutions
offered by this movement were instrumental in the development of Welfarism in Britain.

Ce séminaire s’inscrit dans le prolongement de celui du semestre 1. Il est destiné à guider les étudiants dans la
préparation d’une manifestation scientifique au cours de laquelle ils présenteront leur projet de recherche.

2. La méthodologie documentaire appliquée à la traductologie.

C. Pineira - Ce séminaire, a pour objectif de donner aux étudiants de MASTER les bases de toute méthodologie en
recherches linguistiques :
 Qu’est-ce qu’un objet de recherche, une problématique, une hypothèse ?
 Comment appréhender et incorporer le travail d’autrui dans sa propre recherche ?
 Comment constituer et analyser un corpus ?
 Comment présenter un mémoire et une soutenance ?
Ces questions seront abordées sous un angle théorique et pratique en liaison directe avec la recherche
personnelle des étudiants.

A.Grafe - FAITH IN FICTION: GILEAD AND HOME BY MARILYNNE ROBINSON (12h)
(NB : en 2016-2017 ce séminaire aura lieu en S4)
Questions of faith, family and belonging haunt the work of the contemporary American author Marilynne
Robinson (born 1943), as well as the articulation in language of such questions, which open out into other areas
such as difference, politics, and ethics. We will focus primarily on Gilead, perhaps one of the finest novels to have
been published in the last thirty years. But the publication of Robinson’s novel, Home, the follow-up to Gilead,
may enrich our response to the latter, since Home deals with the same subject matter and characters from a
different perspective. Finally, the seminar will highlight ways in which Robinson brings into play in dramatic ways
Biblical and theological intertexts in Gilead.
Students will be expected to bring their copies of Gilead to all seminar sessions, and are strongly encouraged to
read and bring Home, too.

Description : Introduction à la théorie du langage développée par le linguiste français Gustave Guillaume (18831960) et adaptée à l'anglais par André Joly entre autres.
Après l'acquisition des bases théoriques de la psychomécanique, notamment au travers de comptes-rendus de
lecture, les étudiants seront amenés, sous forme d'exposés, à appliquer la théorie à quelques problèmes concrets
de linguistique anglaise.

Dans le prolongement de ce qui a été fait en Master 1, il s’agira d’amener les étudiants à réfléchir à quelques
problèmes concrets de traduction (traduction de l’oralité, des culturèmes, etc.), au travers de comptes
rendus/exposés s’appuyant sur un ouvrage ou une série d’articles de nature traductologique accompagnés de
corpus.
La pratique du commentaire de traduction (simple et comparé) sera poursuivie.

Le corpus est défini comme un ensemble d’éléments (énoncés) sur lesquels se fonde l’étude d’un phénomène
linguistique mais aussi comme un ensemble de textes réunis à des fins de comparaisons. Dans les deux cas,
l’approche à base de corpus prend appui sur des textes réels, authentiques, des données attestées et non sur des
exemples ad hoc, fabriqués pour les besoins d’une théorie ou d’une étude. De ce fait, la constitution d’un corpus
est une étape scientifique préalable à toute analyse qui doit vérifier plusieurs conditions. Après avoir défini la
notion de corpus, nous aborderons les conditions nécessaires à l’élaboration de cet objet concret qu’est le corpus
en vue d’un traitement.
