Biography
From 1996 till 2001, after university studies of Aesthetics at the Sorbonne, Fanny de Chaillé works
with Daniel Larrieu at the National Choreographic Centre of Tours, first as a production assistant
for the plays On était si tranquille, Feutre (for which she composed the musical score with Rubin
Steiner) and +Qu’hier, and as an interpreter for Cenizas. She also collaborates with Matthieu Doze
(for the direction of solo-films such as sous eXposé) and Rachid Ouramdane, (as the interpreter for
Face cachée and À l’oeil nu as well as the sound director for Au bord des métamorphoses and Les
Morts pudiques). With Gwenaël Morin, she plays in the film Anéantis and in the plays Guillaume
Tell, Philoctète and Lorenzaccio.
Since 1995, she creates her own plays, installations and performances: Karaokurt (1996), a karaoke
based on the work of Kurt Schwitters, l’Ursonate ; La Pierre de causette (1997), an installationperformance ; Le Robert (2000), a performance for a dancer and a dictionary ; Le Voyage d’hiver
(2001), a reading-performance from an eponymous text of Georges Perec ; Wake Up (2003), a
concert of 55 clocks ; and also Underwear, pour une politique du défilé (2003), Ta ta ta (2005),
AMÉRIQUE (2006), Gonzo Conférence and À nous deux (2007), choreographic performances.
She also works as an assistant for Emmanuelle Huynh, for Cribles and Shinbaï, le vol de l’âme
(2009), and with Alain Buffard, for Tout va bien (2010). She founded the group Les Velourses with
Grégoire Monsaingeon, a musical duo responding to commands.
Since November 2009, she is an associated artist to the Théâtre de la Cité internationale, Paris.
In June 2010 during “Week-end à la Cité” she created La Bibliothèque, a play conducted with 23
residents of the Cité universitaire internationale. In May 2011, she created Je suis un metteur en
scène japonais that will be represented in December 2012, and Passage à l’acte in collaboration
with Philippe Ramette in November 2011.

Bunraku is an ancient Japanese art of puppetry, which happened to make the dream of Fanny de
Chaillé come true when she improvised the character of a Japanese director. Bunraku has a very
specific traditional structure which is respected here: a narrator who plays every role of the story,
a musician who accompanies the emotions of the narrator, large puppets manipulated by three
handlers.
But as it is still not entirely Japanese, Fanny de Chaillé introduced a few decisive changes in the
traditional art: the puppet is no longer a doll but a dancer made from flesh and blood, the musician
does not play the shamizen but the ukulele, the narrator does not tell a legendary story but uses
Minetti, a text of Thomas Bernhard.
Je suis un metteur en scène japonais was created on the 29 th, 30 th April and 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th June 2011
at the Théâtre de la Cité internationale in Paris.

Everything seems to pull them apart, but it’s only a matter of perspective... Her, choreographer and
performer, enthusiast to the dynamic gesture of dance, theatre and performance... Him, motionless
gesture virtuoso, dream artist, freezing his body in invisible sculptures then taking pictures in
astounding situations... Both fascinated by the absurd, the body and the need to rationalize the
irrational... Passage à l’acte materializes almost four years of passionate discussion between the
two, aiming to attract each artist on the other’s field.
Finally suiting the action to the word, Fanny de Chaillé and Phillippe Ramette have invented a
“dramatic form” to tame each other’s gesture - the constraint of movement for her, the exposure in
the theatre for him.

La Bibliothèque // 2010
A project directed by Fanny de Chaillé
With the students of the Cité internationale universitaire of Paris
Duration 20 to 30 minutes per reading (the library remains open for several hours)
La Bibliothèque (The Library) is based on the willingness to meet other people and on the idea that
anyone can be the author of knowledge and able to share it. Fanny de Chaillé works with a group of
volunteers with the aim that they “become books and be consulted” by the public. As meetings with
the artist, the content of the book is revealed: it is a point of view of someone on a topic/a theme,
a story.
Those who embody the library are the actors of society as we all are, whatever role we play in it
and regardless of its importance.
For twenty minutes, the book tells a story about him. The reader has at its disposal a varied
selection of books.
La Bibliothèque was created on Saturday 26 th June 2010 and Sunday 27 th June 2010 during “Week-end à la Cité”, in the
library of La Maison Heinrich-Heine and La Maison internationale, in Paris.

Course de lenteur // 2010
A participatory project for the public space by Fanny de Chaillé
The race is a test of speed, a competition over a distance, a given route.
I want to organize a race for many people in the public space.
In a time when society promotes a certain distinctive speed, aggressiveness, competitiveness,
productivity, I want to organize a race that reverses its nature, its calling by inventing a new rule:
the loser is the winner!
This race is a slow race, it follows the rules of this type of competition, but its purpose is reversed:
it is he who comes last, who is the slowest, who wins the race.
Anybody can register, the course is approximately 50 meters long and the rule is simple: to move
forward, always forward. Stops and reversals are prohibited.
To move forward, as slowly as possible, in order to be the last competitor to reach the finish line.
Fanny de Chaillé
Course de lenteur was created on the 5 th June 2010 during the Festival Ties 92 in Issy-les-Moulineaux.

Nos illusions perdues // 2008
A play for three interpreters by Fanny de Chaillé
With Christine Bombal, Jérôme Andrieu, Christophe Ives
Duration 55 minutes
Two years ago at Chamarande, I directed a play, AMÉRIQUE. It was the first time that I confronted
myself to the outside world. This new confrontation to the outside will be a deepening of the work
for AMÉRIQUE. We will experiment in this space as subjects.
To work for a pulling together of our forces, words, energies. To do nothing without one another,
without his help, his intervention, his weight, his load. To develop a collective body for addressing
this outdoor space to the disproportionate scale ratio. To confront this space and to work on our
relationship with it, measuring what man represents in the face of Nature. The absence of limits
related to the vastness, the energy that such a scale summons. What type of perception in what
type of space?
To work the scale ratio, that of nature, disproportionate, and the man who faces her. To work on the
perception that we have of things, confronting ourselves once again to the outdoor space and to
work on how the scale ratios generates disorder, doubt. To include speech. Appearances. To rely
on appearances.
Finally the reality consists of what we build individually, what we perceive. Which elements influence
our perceptions? How can a scale ratio induce a particular
reading?
This play will be set up with three interpreters of different perceptual experiences. How does speech
generate a ritual of words, of movement?
But what is left of the perception itself against the contribution of the memory, of culture, of the
understanding: could knowing be reduced to acknowledging?

Nos illusions perdues was created on the 27 th July 2008 as part of Festival Parcours de danse at Domaine départemental
of Chamarande.

Gonzo Conférence // 2007
A performative conference by Fanny de Chaillé
For and with Christine Bombal
Duration 40 minutes
Fanny de Chaillé bypasses the form of the conference by placing herself under the patronage of
Lesters Bangs, the ultimate symbol of freedom of expression and of counter-culture. She indeed
espouses the cause of rock critics, who lead to the most passionate commitments.
“I want to give a lecture,
a lecture about rock music,
a subjective lecture about rock music,
a subjective and loving lecture about rock music,
a subjective and loving lecture about rock music and feelings,
and to tell you why one day I decided to perform theatre, not rock music,
to tell you why one day I decided to perform theatre,
why I believe in distance, the distance of theatre, the distance of the game.”
Excerpt
“I have been reading about rock music before ever seeing my first rock-concert. Very early in time
have I have loved these texts, their form, their style, perhaps because I felt that they were true?
It’s a bit silly to say it like that, but the rockcritics spoke a simple language, similar to mine, an
everyday language, almost always recounting meetings with the rock stars, and the way they told
these encounters made me believe them. I thought that the persons that they described were really
like that. I thought that it was the truth because they seemed sincere. They told senseless stories
but with so much love and commitment that I mistook it for sincerity...”

AMÉRIQUE // 2006
A play for an island by Fanny de Chaillé
With Christophe Ives, Fanny de Chaillé
With AMÉRIQUE, I want to present an experiment, that of a certain self-transcendence. I want to
leave the theatre aside by working on the pattern of the island, real or imagined, to try incorporating
other body movements.
By living on this island, we shall be separated from our links, redefine new shapes, emancipate
ourselves from our origins, from the environment in which we grew up, from our history.
The island as an ideal of rebirth, of renewal.

Ta ta ta // 2005
A choreographic play for 5 interpreters by Fanny de Chaillé
With Christine Bombal, Matthieu Doze, Christophe Ives, Grégoire Monsaingeon, Fanny de
Chaillé
Lights Jean-Marc Segalen
Duration 60 minutes
In the lineage of the various works on language in her academic research, but also through several
performances and installations, Fanny de Chaillé asks herself the question of dramatic language
and of theatricality.
How should we take the floor?
How should we make another individual’s language our own?
Which elements compose theatricality?
Working on the dramatic language, considering its materiality, thinking the physicality of that
language, the force, compelling it and turning away from all the questions of dramatization and of
interpretation that will catch up with us inexorably.
Ta ta ta was created in the 2005 edition of the festival Les Antipodes in Quartz de Brest.

Underwear ,
pour une politique du défilé
// 2003
A choreographic play for 8 male interpreters by Fanny de Chaillé
With Jérôme Andrieu, Gaëtan Bulourde, Boris Charmatz, Matthieu Doze, Christophe Ives,
Rachid Ouramdane, Maxime Rigobert, Christian Rizzo
Lights Caty Olive
The parade or show of any kind (military, fashion, demonstration), generates a spectacular form.
As an orchestrator of bodies, it is a mode of presentation, of performance involving a succession of
people moving in a line.
The choreographic project Underwear aims to take back and work on this spectacular form that
is the parade, especially the fashion show, to bring up the issues of cross-representation and
exposure of the body.
It incorporates the attributes of a true fashion show - setting (podium, public face to face), lighting,
music (with a live DJ-set) - but also examines the relationship and works on the relation between
body and clothing.
The project Underwear adopts a critical position towards what is at stake in the parade. Unlike the
fashion show, clothing is no longer the subject here. By appropriating itself the form of the parade,
and through the use of generic clothing (jeans, t-shirt), Underwear examines the presence of the
body in its multiplicity. The body of the standard model is replaced by that of the male choreographer/
performer.
Through this proposition, Underwear asserts the multiplicity of bodies and allows every individual
to affirm the unity of action through his/her history of the movement - his/her dance - and thus his/
her singularity. What is at stake in Underwear is the affirmation of the body as being the subject.
Underwear was created in June 2003 in the context of the festival Les Inaccoutumés 15 at la
Ménagerie de Verre.

Le Robert // 2000
A performance by Fanny de Chaillé
With Christophe Ives
Lights Caty Olive
“At the beginning, the object Le Robert is an obsession, when it comes to formalize the thought:
return indefinitely to THE reference when it comes to finding the right words, the word.
My researches on the work of Bernard Heidsieck (his relation to orality), particularly the series of
poems Derviche / Le Robert, are feeding this obsession. Le Robert never leaves me. When the
research work is done, I decide at first to throw the damn dictionary away: not to hear about it, not
to hear it speak again.
How to overcome this obsession? It is through the action of transformation that Le Robert takes
another form: each page of the dictionary is coated with paraffin wax and this until the words and
definitions are completely erased. By this action the dictionary loses its only function and gains in
materiality, in breath.
This action is dissolved gradually into the sculptural form that the object takes: quickly it becomes
essential, as a transparent, beautiful column...
As an aestheticized object, it cannot be reduced to this fascination. Starting from its specific purpose
of being exposed, it becomes a subject on stage, which questions its representation. I intend to
give him his orality back, to question its relationship to written language, its theatricality (the fight
between Fried and Judd), to give it a body.
By the action of Christopher Ives, Le Robert is a performance.

Wake Up //2003
Concert of 55 prepared cloks
The clocks are calibrated at different times, 10, 20,
30 seconds apart, sometimes more.
Depending on the quality of the clocks, a gradual
musical form is randomly created. The performer is at
the same time a member of the audience, observing
the clocks, and an actor as he may intervene on the
bells, by stopping or triggering them.
Le Voyage d’hiver // 2001
Reading-performance (duration 20 minutes)
© Guillaume Schmitt
The origin of the project is the little known text of
Georges Perec, which I stumbled on by chance,
and an incongruous idea: to transcribe this text with
synonyms while respecting the original meaning.
A performance imposes itself fast to the artist. The
rewritten version will be read while the original text
of Perec scrolls, as a generic, on a screen, and
this in a precise way, simultaneously. The meaning
of the text is disturbed, or enriched, by both the
transcript and the multiplication of sources: while
the audience hears a voice giving a version of the
text, a text which means roughly the same thing
scrolls on a screen. Suddenly, the oral transcript
switches to nonsense, the logic semantics is no
longer respected, a crazy race established between
the read text and that which is given to see.
