Arbraska Park is a special place where you climb and travel between the trees at the top of the forest. This is done with the help of rope bridges, ladders, zip lines, climbing nets, foot bridges, swings, giant steps, and Tarzan cords. A great way to learn new skills and develop self-confidence! @))^-u Wix3isMsJu4 b=Zi x3ÇA3u s9lj5 xbsy3j5 xfî1qi3nsMsJ6, xoxhx1qi3nsq4vlx3ht4 e5Öz1qi3nsZt9l. wo8ix“5 !@ wMsMsJ5, w¬8Nt4 wMsJ[î5 sk3yQx3ymMsJ5 &)-so3ht4 Gx3â5 #@ xa†9l #*H x3Çi ^!-aMsJ5ht4 Gx3â5 #) xa†9l #!H. kÌ6 b=Zi x3ÇA3u Wix3icMsJ6, ^ rMübi x3Xqostº5 woŒ5tht4 xsM5yxMsJ6. x[5gymtbsMsJ7uJ5 woŒ5tg5 kNo8i toIsmstu4 mo8iq5gk5 xati Wzhi4 x3Ni9l Wzhi4. wMsJ3bcMsJ7uJ6 xu§1qgi4 wo8ixtq8i4 ÙbW8 x9ä5 wo8ix[zi5 Ax2mf+gus5 x[5gymJi woŒ3tgi. The event was one day shorter than in 2006, but the energy and excitement were not diminished. 12 schools participated, and the total number of participants increased to 70 (32 girls and 38 boys) from 61 (30 girls and 31 boys) at last year’s event. There was a new event this year, the 6 KM TEAM RELAY RACE. A couple of composite teams were created for communities that did not send an official delegation of three boys and three girls. There were also a few runners representing Badabin Eyoo School of Whapmagoostui in the composite teams. Competing against each other in the first race were the composite teams; in the second race, the four Ungava Coast teams; and in the third race, the four Hudson Coast teams. Teams consisted of three girls and three boys who each ran 1 km. The race time for each student was compared against others in their age and gender groups to rank them, and to total their team points. The weather was extremely windy and quite cold, so the race was moved to the triple gym instead of taking place on the outdoor circuit as originally planned. Eight laps around the gym made up a kilometer and due to the location change, many students, teachers and parents turned out to cheer on the runners as they circled the 42 gym. The races were exciting to watch as runners ran confidently around the track. The caliber of the runners seemed to improve from the inaugural year, as they pushed themselves to show their best and to keep going no matter how tired they were. Teams with the lowest combined points received banners for display in their school gyms. Banners for the 6 KM TEAM RELAY RACE were presented as follows: t 1st place went to Kangiqsualujjuaq (12 pts.) t 2nd place went to Inukjuak (21.5 pts.) t 3rd place went to Umiujaq (39 pts.) The 3 KM GIRLS’ event showed great results. The overall level of performance in the girls’ category went up a few notches from last year. Sarah Samisack, last year’s individual winner, won again and reduced her time by nine seconds, with a time of 15:12. Also, six girls completed the course in under 17 minutes - last year Sarah was the only girl to accomplish this. Jamesie Cumberbatch completed the 3 KM BOYS’ course first, in a time of 13:05, and all other boys finished in under 21 minutes. Banners for the 3 KM TEAM RELAY RACE were presented as follows: t GIRLS 1st place went to Inukjuak (7 pts.) t GIRLS’ 2nd place went to Kangiqsualujjuaq (8 pts.) t GIRLS’ 3rd place went to Kuujjuaraapik (12 pts.) This is a very important issue that is affecting the day to day lives of the people of Nunavik. The science behind global warming is extensive and varied, making it difficult for one person to be an expert in it all. To help bring the 50 campers up to speed on the science behind the issues, the first day was devoted to lectures and videoconferences from scientists working in and around Nunavik. Some of the topics covered included: A lecture about Sheila Watt Cloutier - her Nobel prize nomination and her international work to stop global warming; the albedo factor and how it is connected to global warming; the greenhouse effect - how it works, the carbon sink, carbon credits and calculating how many tons of carbon dioxide were released into the atmosphere to hold the camp; the jet stream; and global warming in Nunavik – its impact on the permafrost; ice rains and the impact on wildlife such as caribou survival; the progression of the tree line North; southern 46 species migrating North and displacing native species; the increasing instability of the sea ice in intermediate seasons and the consequences on Inuit hunting and culture; and the accelerated erosion of the land causing the increase of UV rays in lakes. The reality of energy production in the North, consisting primarily of burning fossil fuels, was also discussed. The students were exposed to alternative ways of producing electricity and heat that were possible in the North. In the end, the two means of producing energy that seemed to have the greatest potential in Nunavik were through solar panels and wind-generated power. The campers were then challenged to construct their own portable windmill for generating small amounts of electricity. The windmill was fully functional, having the ability to not only generate electricity but also to charge two types of batteries, MP3 players, and run a powerful LED light for use in hunting cabins. It was a large undertaking and consumed the remainder of the camp. Chief Wow brought with him his Whiteman and Joujou, a 50-foot polar bear which became the camp mascot and a great place to practice the official dance of the camp, Jumpstyle. 48 To mimic carbon credits, carbon points were created and given out to students who were either helpful, knowledgeable, or who tried to make an ecological difference (for recycling cans or cleaning up the tundra). Throughout the camp the carbon points could be cashed in for things like getting out of dish duty. Several times a day there were sports activities both inside the gym and outside on the playing field. These were wonderfully animated by LisaMarie. I do not think anyone will forget pool noodle tag in the gym. This year the camp was lucky enough to have Ohm, a professional video editor, and videos were taken throughout the camp. Eventually these videos were put on discs for the campers as well as being posted on youtube. At the end of the camp, students were asked to draw a picture of what they felt about Global warming. This artwork was put on display for the science fair to which the entire community had been invited. For the science fair, the students were given the responsibility to pass on the knowledge that they had gained throughout the week to their peers and members of the community. They did an amazing job and should be proud of themselves. The ‘Canadian Floor Masters’, a professional Break Dancing crew consisting of a 10-person team of b-boys and b-girls under the direction of social worker Stephen Leafloor, aka ‘Buddha’, taught students various dance moves and worked out a routine together for the grand finale, a dance battle. Akinisie Sivuaraapik and local Inuit athletes and artists taught throat singing, drum dancing and Inuit Games techniques to incorporate into the dance routines. Inukjuak Elders made practice drums for the students to use during the workshops and performance. Buddha gave a workshop on anti-violence every afternoon with discussions on bullying, suicide, sexual abuse, violence, and substance abuse. The battle events at both Innalik and Iguarsivik were successful, with 600 to 700 people attending each performance. Following the final event, students were very reluctant to leave and discussion continued among the parents and other spectators. The Innalik students worked very hard and made the whole community proud of their efforts. This project is inclusive of all abilities. A highlight for all of us was Timothy who is quite disabled and in a wheelchair, getting down in the dance circle, sometimes with the help of his twin brother, and other times on his own. Shouts of support from both camps testified that this activity is one that everyone can use to support each other and build stronger communities. There were lots of proud parents in the audience openly crying with pride and emotion for their kids. Immediately following the event and throughout the following day, the local radio was flooded with calls from Elders giving their thanks and expressing their pride.
