Remarkable Gardens - Introduction
The parks and gardens of France and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur come in all shapes and
sizes. Genuine nurseries of creativity, landscaped using ever more sophisticated techniques,
they are reputed to be among the most unusual in the world.
Our so-called "French-style" gardens are acclaimed for their magnificence, their personality
and their history.
Others stand out for their atypical character and originality. Inviting strollers to reflect, explore
and - for some - take part in a variety of workshops, they reserve a colourful palette of surprises.
Here is a selection of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur's most remarkable gardens; we hope it
will give you a new angle on the gifts Mother Nature has sown in our beautiful region.

Alterarosa
May 13th - 16th in Avignon
Rendez-vous aux Jardins
June 3rd - 5th, 2011
The Benoit XII cloister at the Popes' Palace
in Avignon will be blooming into a fairytale
rose garden for this year's 6th edition of
Alterarosa. Throughout the weekend, visitors
will enjoy discovering the "Evocative Scents
of the South of France" - the theme chosen
to unveil this year's new rose varieties to the
public - through a multitude of plants and
perfumes, carefully selected and presented
to flatter the eyes and the nose! The "Institut
Jardiland" gardening institute will be opening
the event with the official baptism of its latest
creation: a summer rose streaked with yellow
and fuchsia dedicated to the association
Bucodes-Surdifrance, which assists the
deaf and hard of hearing. The rose will be
available for purchase for the first time at
Alterarosa, then at Jardiland shops from
autumn onwards. All profits from the sale will
be donated to the association. In addition,
Alterarosa will be setting up special facilities
to help the deaf and hard of hearing take full
advantage of this magnificent show.
This year's 9th edition of this delightful meeting
organised by the Ministry of Culture and
Communication at France's most beautiful
gardens, will be exploring the theme of "Les
Jardins Nourriciers" (nursery gardens).
The 2010 edition, on the theme of "The
Gardener and his Tools", took place at an
impressive 2,000 parks and gardens
throughout France, prompted 400 open days
and inaugurations, featured 5,000 satellite
events and attracted 1.8 million visitors.
“Rendez-Vous aux Jardins” offers the public
a chance to enjoy a wealth of guided tours,
tool exhibitions, gardening demonstrations,
introductions to organic gardening techniques
(compost , use of control insects), gardening
workshops, talks, etc. The Friday is dedicated
to schoolchildren.

Sentier Art et Nature
(Art & Nature Footpath)
A 2010 new event, renewed in 2011.
Running between the Queyras area and Val
Varaita in Italy, this contemporary art footpath,
set in wild countryside, offers a sensual marriage
of modern works of art and dreamlike scenery.
Created on site by international artists, the
works are inspired by the close relationships
nurtured over a lengthy period with the local
inhabitants and landscapes. The itinerary,
which knits artistic ties between France and
Italy, is interspersed with around twenty
works offering new angles on the surrounding
countryside and instigating a poetic
dialogue with the onlooker. Both moving
and spirit-raising, they also aim to increase
public awareness of nature's treasures
through art.
Salon Rencontre de Jardins,
Bay of Saint-Tropez
September
Created in 2005 and originally featuring 35
exhibitors and 5000 m2 of exhibition space,
the "Rencontre de Jardins" gardening fair
has now become one of the South of
France's benchmark events. This 4-day fair,
held on the road to Saint-Tropez in the 30-acre
grounds of the Pépinière Derbez nursery
(decked out for the occasion with exceptional
veteran palm trees, olive trees aged over a
thousand years and rare plants), now
welcomes over 200 exhibitors and spans
25,000m2. Recognized as the French Riviera's
most stunning gardening meeting, "Rencontre
de Jardins" is a paradise for beautiful garden
lovers, featuring plants of every shape and
size, garden furniture, new trends and, of
course, environmentally-friendly gardening
practises, thanks to the new "Rencontre de
l’Environnement" environment section set
up in 2008. Not to be missed!

Classical “French-Style” Gardens
A brief reminder! The French-style or "classical" garden has a primarily aesthetic and symbolic
vocation. It brings the art of imposing symmetry on nature to its zenith and worships the triumph
of order over disorder, cultivation over unhindered nature, and reflection over spontaneity. The
fashion reached its height in the 17th century with the creation of a French-style garden for Louis
XIV, soon to be copied by every court in Europe!
Jardin du Château Val Joanis
in Pertuis
Situated 30 minutes to the North of Aix-enProvence, Château Val Joanis stands
proudly on the still-visible remains of an ancient
Roman villa. The chateau is bordered by a
vast vineyard spanning over 445 acres and
producing "Côtes du Luberon" AOC wines.
This site is also home to a magnificent garden,
awarded the “remarkable garden” prize in
2008. In 1978, aided and abetted by landscape
gardener Tobbie Loup de Viane, Cécile
Chancel decided to create an 18th-century
style garden which would be both ornamental
and ensure self-sufficiency in terms of fruit
and vegetables. Major works kicked off in
1981 to give shape to the garden, which
was divided into three terraces planted with
a blend of traditional and modern ornamental
trees, vegetables, flowers and evergreen plants.
Free visits from April to late October, plus
December (10 a.m.-7p.m.)

Jardin du Pavillon Galon
in Cucuron
This 18th-century hunting pavilion, nestling
among the vines and bordered by a magnificent French-style garden, is situated in
Cucuron. The four fountains supplied by a
natural spring, built by the original owner, are
still visible today. A passionate gardener, he
introduced various rare species into the
garden, some of which now date back two
centuries. Awarded the title of "remarkable
garden" in 2009, the "Jardin du Pavillon
Galon" offers a wonderful display of greens
and blues, French-style squares, medlar
trees, pistachio trees, jujubes, an infinite variety
of fruit trees and an exhaustive collection of
artichoke varieties! This genuine Garden of
Eden is instilled with all the simplicity and
beauty of a natural, classic and timeless
world. Last but not least, the property produced
its own wines for the first time in 2009!

Botanical Gardens
A brief reminder! Botanical gardens first emerged during the Renaissance period in the aim of
presenting various plant varieties according to a specific classification. Now used for the purposes
of scientific research, conservation and education, they also attract numerous visitors.
Jardin botanique alpin du Lautaret,
in Villar d’Arène
Set at an altitude of 2,100 metres, this garden
was inaugurated in the late 19th-century in
the specific aim of creating a natural space
accessible to the public and dedicated to
research into Alpine plant varieties. Over the
years, it was enriched with various varieties
originating from the Pyrenees, Caucasia and
even the Himalayas. Today, it harbours an
impressive 2,500 beautifully-presented plants,
and offers visitors the chance to enjoy an
introduction to botany against the magnificent
backdrop of the Alps.
The visit's educational value is enhanced by
various exhibitions, extensive information, a
shop and even botany courses.
One of Europe's most beautiful Alpine gardens,
the "Jardin Botanique Alpin du Lautaret",
with its stunning views over the mountains,
is an absolute must for nature lovers of all ages.

“Prieuré de Salagon” Priory,
Museum and Gardens
in Mane
Situated near Forcalquier, "Prieuré de Salagon"
priory (12th-century listed monument) is one
of the most remarkable monumental medieval
constructions in Haute Provence. Today, it
is home to the Regional Ethnology Museum.
The ethnobotanical gardens surrounding the
priory illustrate the relationship between
man and the plant world from the Middle
Ages to current day. They are also remarkable
artistic creations, educational tools and
conservation sites, dedicated to the plants
they harbour and the knowledge built up
around them over the centuries. Salagon
features a medieval garden, "garden of simple
plants" where medicinal plants are grown, a
fragrance garden and modern garden,
retracing the geographical origins of the various
varieties on show. The Salagon museum and
gardens have won backing from the
L’Occitane foundation for its efforts towards
visually handicapped visitors, which include
Braille signposts, workshops for blind children
and a permanent exhibition specially designed for the visually handicapped.
The site offers a delightful ensemble of three
attractions: the priory, museum and gardens.

Le Domaine du Rayol
in Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer
Europe's sun-seeking elite first set up home
in Rayol, along the Maures coast road, in the
early 20th century. Often at the head of vast
fortunes, these wealthy aristocrats rivalled
to create the most beautiful and luxurious
garden. Abandoned for many years, the
"Domaine du Rayol" was finally bought up
by the "Conservatoire du Littoral" conservation
society, then rehabilitated and renamed the
"Jardin des Méditerranées". This extraordinary
garden leads visitors on a voyage into
landscapes inspired by Mediterranean
climates throughout the world, including the
Canary Islands, Mediterranean Basin,
Southern Australia and central Chilli. A genuine
marvel, Rayol also hosts workshops and
guided tours throughout the year, plus introductions to diving in the "marine garden".
And after your stroll (or dive!), you can enjoy
a relaxing break at the bookshop or "Café
du Jardinier".

Ecological Gardens
A brief reminder! Ecology is the science of the relationships between living organisms and their
environment. And as such, ecological gardens are created and managed in the aim of protecting
or restoring biodiversity, maintaining an ecological balance, and promoting sustainable development.
Wild, frugal or elaborate, these gardens are both beautiful and environmentally-friendly!
Jardin Elie Alexis “les rocailles”
in La Roquebrussanne
Set in the charming village of La Roquebrussanne, in the heart of the "Provence Verte"
(Secret Provence) area, "Les Rocailles" was
created by a man whose passion for
gardening began in his early childhood. His
lengthy and in-depth observations gradually
led him to grasp the importance of the
relationships between living organisms and
their environment, and at just 20 years old
he created "Les Rocailles" - a garden he was
to continue nurturing all his life. This garden
highlights the diversity of Mediterranean plant
species and their resistance to arid climates.
Highly concerned about environmental issues,
Elie Alexis chose to model this space in the
simplest and most natural way possible. He
based his concept on self-sufficiency, with
a kitchen garden, orchard and even animals
providing for his needs, and used various
ingenious methods to collect rain water.
Highly appreciated for its wealth of flora and
the fundamental values it purveys, this garden
continue to live - alas without its creator thanks to the efforts of a local association
("Sauvegarde du Jardin d’Elie").
This botanical, educational, practical and
instructive garden is particularly agreeable
to visit, even in the dark!

Fairytale Gardens
We chose this title simply because these gardens are an enchantment for all ages. One is never
too old to appreciate nature's surprises and Man's creative talent in exploiting them. Created
around the respective themes of butterflies and trains, these two gardens are an absolute delight.
Jardin des Papillons
in Digne
Here is one insect that everyone likes... the
butterfly! First and foremost for its singular
nature, then for its beauty and – last but not
least - for what its presence signifies.
Because as you may or may not know, the
butterfly is a genuine indicator of air quality!
And if this garden attracts them in such
numbers, it is obvious that its central location
between the Mediterranean Sea and the
mountains, coupled with the variety of plant
species found there, is no coincidence.
Situated at an altitude of 650 metres, on the
hillside and stretching alongside the river
Bléone, this garden abounds with vegetation
and - of course – with marvellous butterflies.
But not only butterflies: in fact, the variety of
insects inhabiting this green jewel is surprising.
Naturally, certain times of year are more
conducive to butterfly-spotting (April September), which is hence the best time of
year to visit this natural treasure.
Totally enchanting!

Artistic Gardens
Because nature itself is an art, those who know how to care for it are obviously artists! Among them,
some take advantage of their creative talent to create highly original and innovative atmospheres.
Our "artistic gardens" are adorned with objects and installations, and their layout, colours and
fragrances are designed to give food for thought on the relationships between art and nature...
Jardin d’Eguilles
Max Sauze Garden, in Eguilles
Located in Eguilles near Aix-en-Provence,
this garden covers an area of 950m².
Abandoned for many years, it was then
rehabilitated and landscaped over the years
to become today's genuine exhibition space.
Here, metal, paper, plastic sculptures and
installations live happily alongside trees and
a wide variety of plants, instilling the site with
a delightfully poetic atmosphere.
Art fans can buy up works by Max Sauze at
the gallery-come-shop – also staging a
permanent exhibition - at prices to suit every

The marvellous views from this garden, set

Golden Islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros
and Le Levant adjacent to Toulon.
This garden was designed by the Viscount
of Noailles - a patron of the arts from 1925

and rare Mediterranean varieties. Its original
layout and vocation have been respected
and further embellished throughout the years.
This triangular garden, designed on the Cubist
theme, is an intrinsic part of the Villa and is
currently planted with fleshy varieties. To

Cultural & Historic Gardens
The following gardens all tell a story, and hand down a cultural tradition or an art related to nature
and our past. Often poetic and sometimes mystical, each has its own symbolism.
Jardin de l’Alchimiste
in Eygalières
This evocatively-named "Alchemist's
Garden" garden is a fantastic and mysterious
site, literally packed with history. The site of
Mas de la Brune, situated in this ravishing
village in the Alpilles mountain, overflows
with profane and biblical elements and symbols
dating back to the Renaissance. The
science of Alchemy - one of the objectives
of which was the creation of the Philosopher's
stone capable of transforming metals –
spread and developed up to the Renaissance
period. The owners of the garden were so
inspired by this quest that they decided to
recreate a "magical" world, whose flowers,
stones, trees, metals and shapes would be
arranged to incite the visitor to meditate. In
this aim, the visit takes place in three stages
starting with a maze, then moving on to a
magical plant garden and ending with an
itinerary representing the alchemist's quest
to create the famous philosopher's stone...
Simply magical!

This delightful, 1,500 m2 country-style garden,
designed to foster a feeling of wellbeing,
was created in 2008 in a village in the inland
Var area, at the gateway to the Maures forest.
It is based on the precept that nature is a living
art with many poetic aspects, and as such
goes happily hand in hand with literature.
It is interspersed with texts on the garden itself,
nature, and literature, inviting visitors to
meditate and dream. Featuring collections
relating to botany, biodiversity, ancient objects
and modern creations, plus a bird corner
and insect corner, this garden is a hub of
exchanges, culture and creativity.

Le Jardin Romain
in Caumont-sur-Durance
This genuine Roman garden, covering an
area of 12,000 m², harbours an extraordinary
ornamental pond, probably the only one of
its kind in Roman Gaul. Situated downhill
from the remains of an affluent Roman villa
dating back to the beginning of the 1st century
AD, the site was mercifully spared from a
housing development project some years
back. And it was thanks to fructuous research
that this jewel, spanning an incredible
2,000 years of history, was finally unveiled.
In 1999, the town council decided to buy up
the site in the aim of rehabilitating the garden
and fabulous, 65-metre long ornamental
pond comprising its centrepiece.
Now divided into several thematic gardens,
the "Jardin Romain" offers visitors a chance
to relive this fascinating period of history
through the layout of its various elements
and plants, and their references to the
Greek and Latin divinities.
Opening times: February, March, November
from 2-5 p.m. (except Tuesdays) - April, May,
October from 2-6 p.m. (except Tuesdays)
June, August, September from 10-12.30
a.m. and 3-7 p.m.
