Hi Jean-Luc,
Thanks for asking me to sit on the national research committee. I really
think that the development of the CSPRC will strengthen the industry and
will be essential to keep Canadian strawberries competitive.
I'm not sure if I will be able to function as a full member of the committee
as I have a lot of other commitments and berries are only a small part of my
research mandate now. However, I would love to develop a bigger research
program in berries in the future.

I also don't think I would be able to go to any meeting that is not within 1
or 2 hours from Vineland, as these are not the meetings I'm usually
attending and funds (and time) are a limiting factor.
Is there a way that I could work as a 'back-up' member? I would be available
to review documents, do teleconference etc.
Best regards,
Rose

Hi Jean-Luc
Sorry I missed your call earlier this week. I would be pleased to serve on
this committee. Please correct my name in the table and change the B Sc to
M Sc.
This initiative is critical to the strawberry industry in Canada. Our
industry is facing a number of challenges at a time when research support is
decreasing and only by working together can we hope to address these
issues.

Hello Jean-Luc,
Yes, I am quite sorry for not responding earlier. I had flagged your earlier email for follow-up, but it got buried in my inbox
and I forgot about it. Thank you for the reminder!
I would be very happy to participate on the consulting scientific subcommittee. I believe that the proposed Canadian
strawberry promotion and research council will provide a great opportunity to help Canadian strawberry producers
through a combination of promotions and research targeted toward improving existing production systems to address
current problems and the development of innovative production systems to expand opportunities for growing and
marketing high-quality Canadian strawberries.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help, and thank you for your work on this.

Hello Jean-Luc,
I would be pleased to participate in the strawberry national research
committee as a provincial government advisor (for Manitoba). This committee
will provide a communication link between berry researchers, berry producers
and berry extension staff from across Canada, allowing for improved project
coordination and sharing of project results.

Objet : National Strawberry Research Committee Participation
Hello Jean-Luc:
Thank you for the invitation to participate in the proposed National
Strawberry Research Committee. I am willing to sit on the committee
representing the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture & Forestry.
This is an important committee to establish. It will allow for the
coordinated effort of strawberry research within Canada. Furthermore,
assessing research proposals which emerge for funding opportunities will
allow for the highest quality and most relevant strawberry research to move
forward. This will allow our Canadian strawberry industry to become
stronger, more competitive and responsive to emerging issues within the
sector.
I will participate in as many meetings as possible. Given the current and
future budgetary constraints, it may be difficult to travel out of province

to attend face-to-face meetings. However, I will do my best to attend when
possible.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I can be reached at (902)
314-0816. I look forward to the upcoming discussions.

Dear Jean-Luc,
Thank you for the update on the national Research Committee for
Strawberries. As Berry Crop Specialist, for the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs, I welcome the
opportunity to be part of this important committee.
Research is important to the long-term survival and growth of the Ontario
strawberry industry. However, researchers and research resources are few and
not enough to solve all the problems we currently face. Many of these issues
are national in nature and are priorities for growers across Canada.
Formation of a national research committee will help to raise to profile of
the berry industry , and help bring research priorities to the research
community and funding agencies.
Also, a great deal of experience, knowledge and expertise can come to the
table when a national committee meets. Information which is learned in one
province can be shared with others before scientific papers are published. A
national committee with provide a mechanism for net-working and problem
solving at the grass-roots level. Strawberry growers and stakeholders in the
berry industry will benefit from such a committee.
Sincerely,
Pam Fisher

Bonjour Jean-Luc,
Thank you for your invitation to participate in National Strawberry Research
Committee. I will be delighted to participate. There are many
opportunities and challenges facing the Canadian strawberry industry and, to
date, there has not been a formal national strategy for research. This
committee will enable all interested parties to come together to set
priorities, identify potential projects and leverage research resources and
funding. The end result will be a more focused, efficient research effort
which will be of great benefit to strawberry growers across the country.

Objet : RE: Participation to the strawberry national research committee
Hello Jean-Luc,
I sought a response from my Superiors at the SK Ministry of Agriculture
regarding whether or not I could participate in the Strawberry Research
Committee. I did not receive an immediate reply, but my immediate manager
told me I am free to participate (which I would like to do). Unfortunately
the SK Ministry of Agriculture would be unlikely to provide funding for
out-of-province travel that could potentially be desired. In essence, the
SK Ministry of Agriculture will offer my time to participate on the
committee. As I understand it, the first meeting would be at the CHC
meetings occuring in 2014 in Kelowna. I will likely be there participating
in the CHC meetings, so I will be likely to be able to participate in this
initial meeting.
In regard to the SFGA, they discussed this matter at the last Board Meeting
and I believe they determined to send a letter of support.
The Board wanted to do a consultation with their Strawberry grower members,
before they made a solid decision about how to proceed.
If I remember correctly, the decision was to send a letter of support that
indicated the SFGA would pursue the "5 years to establish a Levy" option.
Best Regards,
Forrest
