LETTER FROM THE PAST PRESIDENT:
A Parting Word
As December drew to a close, so did the period for balloting for the latest
slate of officers in the American Council for Québec Studies. Vice President
Raymond Pelletier of the University of Maine was elected president; Juliette
Rogers of the University of New Hampshire succeeds Ray as vice president; and
Leslie Choquette of Assumption College and Samuel Fisher of the University of
South Alabama were re-elected to the posts of secretary and treasurer,
respectively.
One of the important results of this transition is that my title passes into
the hands of someone who is capable and affable—and who speaks vastly better
French than I do. A less important result is that I will no longer be writing
regularly to the membership of the ACQS. So before I fade away, I want merely
to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you for allowing me to represent you for
the past two years.
These were good years for our organization, with sound finances,
cooperative relations with other associations, a star-studded biennial conference
in Québec, and a semi-annually stellar lineup of scholarship in the journal. But
because I can take direct credit for none of this, I have every confidence that my
successors will do even better at these endeavors. I—and you—owe an
enormous debt to them, and to our ever-helpful partners in government, the arts,
and academia in Québec, throughout Canada, here in the United States, and
around the world.
In truth, I will not be fading away soon. I continue for two more years as a
member of the Executive Board, in whose meetings I will ponder deeply, smile
knowingly, and speak only when necessary. More constructively, I will also keep
up my assistance to the editor-in-chief of Québec Studies, Émile Talbot, with
submissions to the journal in history and the social sciences.
Last (but definitely not least), I will do my best to maintain the benevolent
spirit of the ACQS in whatever roles I do play. The ACQS, perhaps because it is
a relatively small organization, has almost always operated more through
consensus than through competition or conflict, and more according to custom
and tradition than by rules and regulations. The ACQS possesses an unusually
collegial and congenial leadership. People in official positions actually like and
trust each other; they routinely display motivations that have more to do with selfsacrifice and service than with self-promotion and honor. I have often thought
that the broader academic culture could learn a thing or two from that example.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT ELECT:
D’abord, je tiens à offrir à tous les membres de l’ACQS mes meilleurs
vœux de bonheur pour la nouvelle année.
Ensuite, permettez-moi d’exprimer le grand plaisir que c’est pour moi de
présider une association qui a pour but de faire connaître et mieux apprécier la
culture française de l’Amérique du Nord dans nos universités, dans nos écoles,
dans nos communautés et parmi ceux qui reconnaissent et appuient l’importance
de la diversité culturelle et linguistique. Cette mission, je la poursuis à l’intérieur
du monde universitaire depuis quarante ans déjà.
Je suis fier d’ajouter mon nom à la liste des professeurs et chercheurs qui
figurent parmi les membres de cette association qui a tout récemment mérité le
Prix du 3-juillet-1608, parmi des collègues qui ont été reçus à l’Ordre des
francophones d’Amérique (Marc Levine, Myrna Delson-Karan, Ginette Adamson)
et avec des auteurs (Leslie Choquette, Karen Gould, Mary-Jean Green), trois
parmi les quatre à avoir été reconnus lors du congrès de l’ACSUS pour
l’importance de leurs études sur le Québec. En plus de leurs réussites
intellectuelles, les membres de l’ACQS partagent une compétence linguistique
en français. Combien d’associations américaines parmi les milliers peuvent
réclamer à l’unanimité des adhérents bilingues?
Aux États-Unis et partout ailleurs, on a tendance à oublier l’importance
des langues et des cultures. Le gouvernement du Président Bush vient de
conclure que ce genre de lapsus mène à la faiblesse politique et économique de
l’état ; il vient donc de proposer une initiative qui relie la formation linguistique à
la sécurité nationale. Quoique cette initiative ne vise pas précisément
l’enseignement du français, elle revendique l’importance de la mission de
l’ACQS : enseigner le français de l’Amérique du Nord et faire connaître la culture
des ses interlocuteurs. L’exemple que le Président Bush a donné dans sa
conférence de presse était le sentiment de bien-être qu’il ressent quand la
personne avec qui il dialogue parle sa langue et apprécie sa culture.

En effet, des bienfaits politiques, économiques et scientifiques découlent
d’une communication linguistique et culturelle efficace. Soyez rassurés, chers
collègues, de mon dévouement à cette mission.

FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT:
The Fifteenth Biennial Conference
The Fifteenth Biennial Conference of the American Council for Québec
Studies will be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 12-15, 2006. One
of the oldest cities in the U.S., Cambridge has been a center of academic
learning and scholarly pursuits for over 350 years. The setting for the 2006
conference, on the banks of the Charles River at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, will
provide a beautiful locale for visitors during the stunning fall leaf season in New
England.
The theme of the conference, “Québec Studies: From the Colonial to the
Post-Colonial / Les études québécoises: du colonial au post-colonial,” will offer
an examination of the influence of Québec culture in earlier times, as well as the
status of contemporary Québec politics, literature, and the arts, in a global
context. The executive committee has already begun meeting to discuss
keynote speakers and funding from the Québec and Canadian governments.
More details will be forthcoming in the spring newsletter or on the ACQS website
(www.acqs.org).
The Program Chair welcomes submissions pertaining to the conference
theme and to all topics relevant to the study of North American francophone
history, society, and culture. The deadline for paper proposals is March 1, 2006.

FROM THE SECRETARY:
First, I would like to join my ACQS colleagues in extending a warm
welcome to the newest member of our Executive Board, Juliette M. Rogers.
Professor Rogers is Associate Professor of French at the University of New
Hampshire, director of the UNH European Cultural Studies program and the
UNH-in-Paris program, and a member of the core faculty in Women's Studies.
She is currently Vice-President of the Women in French organization and is
organizing the Third Women in French conference, which will take place at UNH
April 6-8, 2006. She has been studying images of women and work in Québec
literature and received a DOE-Fulbright fellowship in 2003-2004 to spend the
year in Montréal doing research on women writers. She joins the Executive
Board in the capacity of vice president and conference program chair.

is less expensive to renew for two years. The ACQS Board urges you to take
advantage of this reduced rate, which also reduces paperwork and saves you
having to remember yearly renewals!

MEMBER NEWS:
Vincent Desroches, currently book review editor of Québec Studies, was a
visiting professor at Duke University in Fall 2005. While there he organized a
Québec Film Festival, with invited guests Denis Chouinard and Dany
Laferrière.
Our Gulf Coast colleagues Sam Fisher and Bob Whelan have returned to their
homes in Mobile and New Orleans after being evacuated during Hurricane
Katrina.
Constantina Mitchell, formerly of Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, and
Paul Côté, formerly of American University, Washington, DC, have moved back
to Montréal where they are now working as free-lance translators. They have
written a novel entitled Winter Passage which was recently released by Behler
Publications and which deals with 18th-century Québec. A synopsis of the novel

Jane Moss, currently managing editor of Québec Studies, is the guest editor of
Canadian Literature, 187, a special issue devoted to “Francophone Canadian
Writing Outside of Québec,” and featuring articles by ACQS members Réjean

Beaudoin, Lucie Hotte, Johanne Melançon, Jane Moss, Pamela Sing, and Metka
Zupancic, plus poetry by Lise Gaboury-Diallo.
Jean-Jacques Thomas has been appointed Director of the Canadian Studies

and Francophone Culture.” Keynote speakers include Claire Quintal, professor
emerita of French and founding director emerita of the Institut français,
Assumption College, speaking on “The Franco-American Woman of Yesteryear
and Yesterday” and Louise Dupré, poet, feminist critic, and professor of creative
writing at UQAM, “Écrire à la croisée de l’intime et du politique.” There will be
performances and a round-table discussion on francophone arts in New England
by Josée Vachon (singer-songwriter), Rhea Côté-Robbins (novelist), and Susan

The American Council for Québec Studies sponsors a biennial conference
and publishes Québec Studies, a semi-annual bilingual journal.
The Council is administered by an eight-person executive board whose
officers are elected every two years. They, in turn, are assisted by an
administrator who is appointed by them to conduct the business of a permanent
secretariat. The editors of Québec Studies are selected by the officers.
