MICHEL CÔTÉ’s EasternTownships
MICHEL CÔTÉ IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ACTOR, equally
adept at drama and comedy. His latest standout role: Gervais
Beaulieu, the father in the hit movie C.R.A.Z.Y He was born
in Alma, in Quebec’s Lac Saint-Jean region, but he’s chosen
the province’s Eastern Townships as the place to find peace
and quiet between movie shoots and stage appearances. “In
1975, I was working in the theatre in Sherbrooke, and not far
away I found an abandoned 150-year-old fieldstone house.
The next year, my wife [the excellent actress Véronique Le
Flaguais] and I bought the house, which we’d fallen in love
with. And we’re still there.”
So it was more by chance than by choice that Michel made
his second home in this bucolic landscape of picturesque
rolling hills, farms, and villages far from urban mayhem. He
and Véronique live there happily in tune with the seasons;
their 27- and 23-year old sons have struck out on their own.
“We like to go cycling on the bike paths (photo 1) leading to
North Hatley via Lennoxville, as well as at Mont Orford. But
we especially like to cycle the small backroads between Stoke,
Saint-Camille, Wotton and Saint-Georges-de-Windsor. We
leave our car with a farmer and go for long rides. We listen to
the cicadas, we have a picnic by the side of the road. It’s
wonderful! In the fall, the landscapes are really magnificent.”
Among his favourite outdoor spots is Mont Ham, “a superb
peak, with a lot less traffic than Mont Mégantic.” The mountain, which is 718 metres high, boasts 18 kilometres of hiking trails. When winter comes, the couple love to go crosscountry skiing in the wild spaces that start at their front door,
go skating on the property’s artificial pond, and enjoy downhill skiing at Mont Orford (photo 2).
Cooking and entertaining are some of the simple pleasures
treasured by the actor and actress. Thanks to their local
explorations, they’ve discovered the delicious artisanal products made at Ferme Lune de miel (photo 4). “It’s a family
business that makes, among other things, great creamed
honey that’s perfect on toast...and they also have an interpretive centre about bees.” Michel likes to buy meat from

Il a beau être né à Alma, dans la région québécoise du LacSaint-Jean, Michel Côté a élu les Cantons-de-l’Est pour refuge,
entre les tournages et la frénésie des planches. « En 1975, j’ai
découvert, dans les environs de Sherbrooke où je jouais au
théâtre, une maison en pierres des champs abandonnée, vieille
de 150 ans. L’année suivante, ma femme et moi [l’excellente
comédienne Véronique Le Flaguais] faisions l’acquisition de ce
coup de cœur. Nous y sommes toujours. »
C’est donc par hasard puis par choix que Michel Côté a adopté pour sa résidence secondaire cet arrière-pays de vallons verdoyants, de fermes et de villages pittoresques, loin du bruit et
de la fureur. Là, Véronique et lui vivent en amoureux au rythme
des saisons, leurs fils de 27 et 23 ans ayant quitté le nid familial. « Nous aimons rouler à vélo sur les pistes cyclables (photo
1) menant à North Hatley en passant par Lennoxville, et aussi
sur celles du mont Orford. Mais surtout dans les petits rangs
entre Stoke, Saint-Camille, Wotton et Saint-Georges-deWindsor. Nous laissons la voiture chez un fermier, et nous
entreprenons de grandes virées. On entend les cigales, on
pique-nique au bord du chemin. C’est extraordinaire !
L’automne, les paysages sont magnifiques. »
Dans son palmarès plein air, Michel Côté cite en outre le
mont Ham, « un piton superbe, beaucoup moins fréquenté que
le mont Mégantic ». Culminant à 713 m, la montagne abrite
18 km de sentiers de randonnée. La saison froide venue, le
couple parcourt en ski de fond la nature qui s’épanouit autour
de sa maison, patine sur son petit lac artificiel. Et dévale les
pistes de ski alpin du mont Orford (photo 2).
Cuisiner et recevoir font partie des bonheurs simples que
cultivent le comédien et sa femme. Au détour de leurs
escapades, ils ont découvert les savoureux produits artisanaux
de la Ferme Lune de miel (photo 4). « Cette entreprise familiale
fait entre autres un très bon miel baratté, qui s’étale bien sur les
rôties… C’est aussi un centre d’interprétation de l’abeille. » Sa

Léandre Proulx, an affable butcher from the town of Stoke who’s
also a painter on the side. “His Townships landscapes shimmer
with colour.”
Although he’s a bit of a homebody, Michel still likes to dine out
occasionally. Two of his favourite spots are L’Expresso,
in Magog Township, serving Italian-style dishes, and Da Toni
(photo 3) in Sherbrooke, where he’s been enjoying al fresco dining since 1977.
To appreciate fellow actors at work, Michel sometimes heads to
La Marjolaine theatre in Eastman, or to Le Vieux Clocher in
Magog. But the stage he loves best of all is the one in Salle
Maurice-O’Bready in Sherbrooke, a 1,700-seat hall renowned for
its excellent acoustics. His preference is no accident: that is where
he will be from February 15 to 17 with his colleagues Marc
Messier and Marcel Gauthier, for a revival of the Quebec mega-hit
Broue. After more than 2,700 performances over 26 years, this
social comedy set in a quintessential Quebec tavern is still going
strong. Just like Michel Côté’s love for his adoptive home.

l’Estrie sont vibrants de couleurs. »
Plutôt casanier, Michel a quand même quelques restaurants de
prédilection. Comme L’Expresso, à Magog, qui propose une cuisine
d’influence italienne, ou l’incontournable Da Toni (photo 3) de
Sherbrooke, et sa belle terrasse, qu’il apprécie depuis 1977.
Afin de voir ses camarades acteurs à l’œuvre, Michel fréquente à
l’occasion La Marjolaine, à Eastman, et Le Vieux Clocher de Magog.
Mais s’il est une scène qu’il affectionne, c’est bien celle de la Salle
Maurice-O’Bready de Sherbrooke, un amphithéâtre de 1700 places
à l’acoustique formidable. Et pour cause. Du 15 au 17 février, avec
ses comparses Marc Messier et Marcel Gauthier, il y reprend le
mégasuccès Broue. Après plus de 2700 représentations et
26 années d’existence (!) cette comédie de mœurs campée dans une
taverne typiquement québécoise ne s’émousse toujours pas. Tout
comme la passion de Michel Côté pour sa région d’adoption.
