Principles and Standards for
School Mathematics
Communication is featured as one of the standards in NCTM’s Principles and
Standards for School Mathematics (2000) at all grade levels. Every example in
this book demonstrates how teachers can foster good mathematical communication. In addition, each example illustrates how communication is incorporated into instruction focused on mathematical content and procedures. The
table below highlights one standard for each example; however, other standards are also addressed in individual examples.
