H SH Prince Albert II of Monaco looks back at the 150-year history of the Société des Bains de Mer for us. L’histoire continue ... Your Highness, the Société des Bains de Mer was founded under the aegis of François Blanc, at the invitation of your ancestor, Prince Charles III, on the suggestion of his mother, Princess Caroline. How do you see this remarkable venture? I admire it because it took great courage, a lot of imagination coupled with a vision of the future and, of course, great political acumen on the part of my ancestors to launch the project. Princess Caroline was convinced that it was a good idea, and managed to persuade her son, Prince Charles III, to make it happen. François Blanc and his wife Marie were brilliant business minds and absolutely determined to succeed. They had a long-term vision of how the Principality should develop economically. One can’t help but applaud their pioneering approach towards developing tourism. The creation of Monte-Carlo was a significant milestone in the history of the region, as well as for the tourism sector. What role do you play in ensuring that this legacy lives on? Monte Carlo is famous the world over. The name is synonymous with luxury, refinement, beauty, and a certain type of lifestyle. It helps to promote the Principality on an international level. EDITORIAL and honours the spirit of its founders, but also that it continues to modernise and move with the times. It is a very interesting challenge that engages both my government and the SBM – in projects such as the renovation of the Hôtel de Paris and the Sporting d’Hiver. How do you work with the Société des Bains de Mer, now known as Monte-Carlo SBM? The SBM is an important part of our economy with its casinos, hotels and other establishments. It also plays an essential social role because the company is the largest private employer in the Principality and employs many Monégasque people. The Government of Monaco has always had a very close, constructive relationship with the SBM. I am kept constantly informed on the progress of the group, which is going through a difficult time at the moment. This concerns me because the company has a significant impact on my country’s economy, but I am confident that it will be able to meet the challenges it is facing. What is the attraction of Monaco today? Is it still linked to this extraordinary history? Monaco’s attraction lies in its undeniable strengths: safety, quality of life, education system, political stability, and also its history. Monaco has also always been seen as a place for entertainment, and I must congratulate the SBM for continuing this tradition over the years. In fact today it partners with the most important sporting and cultural events in the Principality. The Principality’s image is partly defined by the establishments of the Monte-Carlo SBM group. How do you think it will fare in the future? I feel calm and confident about its future. I have big ambitions for my country, which has survived the financial and economic crises since 2008 without incurring external debt. I know that the entire staff of the SBM is working hard to maintain the level of excellence that the group is famous for. I am counting on everyone to do their utmost to ensure that Monaco continues to be a global leader in terms of hospitality. From 1920 to 1939, Picasso himself made fifteen trips to the Riviera. The light, the sea, and the coastal scenery fuelled his creativity as much as the region’s artistic traditions and the people he met there. During the summers he spent in Antibes, Juan-les-Pins and the surrounding areas, his experiences and environment had a direct impact on his work, resulting in numerous drawings and gouaches that intimately reflect his state of mind at the time. The Mediterranean hills reminded him of his native Spain, which was then in the grip of major political upheavals. He painted a number of the villas he stayed in, the views he saw, moments of rest and relaxation, architectural features, and the people he came across on the way, such as the Dancers of the Ballets Russes company, whom he came to watch in Monaco in spring 1925 at the invitation of Sergei Diaghilev. The Grimaldi Forum will be presenting 115 of these masterpieces to the public for the very first time. Among the pieces in this collection, which covers almost all of the artist’s creative periods, are quintessential paintings from his ‘Studio’ and ‘Artist and Model’ series, as well as groups of canvases showing similarities – depicting, for example, still lifes or women – that form the basis of the ‘Variations on a theme’ presented in this second section of the show. Jean-Louis Andral, one of the exhibition’s three curators, explains: “These remarkable thematic groups, featuring four, six, or up to twelve paintings that span the artist’s different periods were created like a musical composition with variations and a prelude. They illustrate how the artist developed his approach and his handling of the themes over time.” They include the Déjeuner sur l’Herbe group, which he painted after Manet. One of the collectors’ sons comments: “When you admire these series, you enter the mind of the artist (…). More boxing events punctuated the Principality’s sporting calendar, in 1931, in 1935 with a gala event organised on the Casino terraces, in 1939 when spectators watched French, international and military champions battle each other in the ring, and again in 1971, 1992 and 1994 with the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship in the Salle des Étoiles, which was also the venue for the Monte-Carlo Pro Boxing Masters tournament in 2005 and 2006. P ublished in April, the commemorative book 150 ans MonteCarlo SBM traces Monte-Carlo SBM’s remarkable 150-year history, which began when Prince Charles III of Monaco invited property entrepreneur François Blanc to develop a resort that continues to thrive to this day. The volume includes an entertaining series of original, previously unpublished photographs by Italian artist Gea Casolaro. Entitled Passé/Présent (‘Past/Present’), the portfolio features icons such as John Wayne smoking a cigarette in front of the Casino, and Peter Sellers posing on the steps of the Opera. As well as presenting the Principality’s key figures, the book also focuses on the outstanding historic properties that the resort’s reputation is built on, and gives us a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Monte-Carlo SBM group and the people who make it all happen. Here are some photographic excerpts from the book. Available from the Monte-Carlo SBM shop and FNAC Monaco. T he company that invented, and continues to reinvent, the concept of ‘resort’ is paying tribute to all those, past and present, who have contributed to its excellence. Among the highlights are a host of festive occasions taking place this summer. Exceptional weekend The celebrations that kicked off in March with the Bal de la Rose du Rocher are continuing in July with a one-of-a-kind weekend showcasing what makes the Monte-Carlo Resort so special. On 5 July, the Opera Garnier is hosting a fabulous 150th anniversary concert with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and surprise guests. Then, on Saturday 6 July, Rod Stewart is giving the opening performance at the Sporting Summer Festival. Another must-see event is the Dangerous Luxury exhibition by highly creative Brazilian design duo Fernando and Humberto Campana, organised especially for Monte-Carlo SBM, which opens at the Sporting d’Hiver, also on 6 July (see page 60). Memories on film Among the cultural events on the agenda is the open-air screening of the film compilation MonteCarlo fait son cinema (‘Monte-Carlo and the movies’), which will play from 1 July to 31 August on the Casino terraces in a unique pop-up cinema designed by landscape architect Jean Mus o The Monte-Carlo SBM group also owes its success to all the men and women who use their skills to serve their customers. Made by film students from the Factory college in Lyon (with the Archives Audiovisuelles of Monaco), the compilation features clips from 150 films shot in the Principality and the SBM’s establishments and starring screen idols such as Grace Kelly, Sacha Guitry, Audrey Hepburn, Jeanne Moreau, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Paradis. It is a moving living testimony to an extraordinary story. An array of exciting events A big occasion calls for a big party, and to ensure that the festivities live up to expectations, MonteCarlo SBM’s establishments are offering a range of promotions and surprises covering everything from wellness and nightlife to sport and gastronomy. The Louis XV-Alain Ducasse restaurant, for example, will be adding its expert culinary touch to proceedings, while the Hôtel de Paris has created a special cocktail called Celebration made with gin, limoncello and freshly-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices, and topped with a frothy citrus meringue that looks as good as it tastes! And from mid-June, resort guests can take part in the wine event ‘150 ans, 150 jours, 150 vins’ (‘150 years, 150 days, 150 wines’), and sample 150 vintage Bordeaux wines from the Hôtel de Paris wine cellars. Special package deals will also be available at the Hôtel de Paris, Hôtel Hermitage, Monte-Carlo Bay & Resort and Monte-Carlo Beach hotels (see page 100 for details). F. & H.C.: We were very honoured and happy to have the opportunity to hold an exhibition at such a prestigious place. What does the SBM and, more broadly, the Principality of Monaco represent for you? Had you been here before? F. & H.C.: For us, Monaco represents excellence, tradition and luxury. We had never been here before. What is the theme of this exhibition? F. & H.C: We question the nation on the concept of luxury, which we compare, in an ironic way, with Pop. What is traditional luxury today, when contrasted with what is popular, and how can we translate this into everyday objects and traditional values? We wanted to put these two values face to face, taking luxury objects such as animal hide, bronze and diamonds, and contrasting them with simple materials. We also wanted to show the contrast between the animality of alligators and insects, and objects that were used as Roman Baroque luxury ornaments. j Campana brothers. | Les frères Campana. 60 The Brazilian designers are taking over the Salle des Arts to present Dangerous Luxury, an exhibition that lives up to their reputation. Expect exuberance and offbeat transformations! The works that you are exhibiting are new creations. Were they influenced by the location of the exhibition, the identity of the Principality or the SBM’s history? F.C.: Part of this exhibition was presented in Paris at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. We are extending it with other pieces made especially for the SBM. H.C.: One of the exhibition’s new elements is the jewellery collection. We are working with a very talented designer from Rome, Fabio Salini, to produce this range especially for Monaco. How will you reconcile your approach to recycling and using natural and ‘poor’ materials with Monaco’s luxury image and precious environment? F.C.: Dangerous Luxury is at a crossing point between two worlds: the world of history and the world of nature. The latter comes from Brazil, a young country with a fresh look that has not been contaminated by the weight of history. Brazil is building its history and is still a teenager compared to Europe, which has a past of many centuries to recount. We reconcile the two by contrasting certain materials. For the jewellery collection, we mixed a golden-yellow grass called Capim Dourado, which only grows in Brazil, with precious stones and gold. Tell us about some of the exhibits. F. & H.C.: In addition to jewellery and pieces that were exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, we will also present four new works with ‘golden fur’. un passé de plusieurs siècles. Beyond the aesthetic and functional aspects, your work tends to champion values such as sustainability, traditional craftwork, recycling and using local materials. Do you think these should form the basis of a designer’s work today? H.C.: I think our work carries a concept of hope – a hope that everything can be transformed into something else. We can give new life to materials that already exist, at the same time creating the opportunity to save traditions that are disappearing. Our work tells a story and shows where it comes from. We try our best not to be homogenised into the ‘massification’ of a project. We produce hands-on, well-targeted design. ¬ Parlez-nous des pièces exposées. H.C. While these early pioneers of Brazilian architecture and design blazed the trail, the country’s subsequent development and burgeoning international reputation paved the way for a whole new generation to make their mark. Architects such as Marcio Kogan and Isay Weinfeld, for example, have been designing prestigious buildings for years (read on for our mini-guide). A lot of energy and resources are being poured into fulfilling this bold commitment in order to obtain official certification. This enormous challenge is being taken on by all the Monte-Carlo Beach staff and the executive chef Paolo Sari, whose primary focus is on locally-sourced products supplemented with a daily supply of organic meat, fruit and vegetables – including organic tomatoes grown on the hills surrounding Nice – with a view to “offering the healthiest, tastiest products possible”. This policy is gradually being implemented in the Monte-Carlo Beach restaurants Le Deck and La Vigie. The hotel’s gourmet restaurant Elsa and beachside eatery Les Cabanas already offer their own organic set and à la carte menus. Les Cabanas are a charming collection of tents arranged over three levels, where lunch is served throughout the day from noon till 6pm – the perfect place to enjoy the new 100% organic pizza while you dip your toes in the water! Choose from a variety of simple dishes with the accent on delicious, healthy fare. Health and wellness are also on the menu at the spa, where the experienced therapists will pamper you with treatments by La Prairie and Ivo Pitanguy. Or if you’re looking for fun and thrills with your family and friends, try one of the many water sports on offer at the Monte-Carlo Beach: jet skiing (for hire and tours), parasailing, torpedo boats, towable tubes, flying carpet and armchair inflatables, waterskiing and wakeboarding. And to continue your day to the sounds of the resident DJ, head down to the Monte-Carlo Beach’s stylish Sea Lounge. From 4pm, it serves cocktails, smoothies, fine wines, including international wines by the glass, and vintage champagnes with the Mediterranean as far as your eye can see! Pour des sensations fortes ou des moments de fun à vivre en famille et entre amis, vous avez the Blue Bay overlooking the sea (open every day from 7.30pm to 10.30pm and from 8pm to 11pm in July and August), or enjoy a Lebanese evening back at Las Brisas with barbecue, DJ and belly dancing.
