He became very interested in French vaudeville songs and in American ragtime. The future of music, he felt, lay in the mode of simplicity - of melody rather than involved harmonies and counterpoint. Serious composers, he thought, could learn much from music-hall ditties. La Diva de “l’Empire” represents a perfect example of this. This Intermezzo Américain was composed for Paulette Darty, who was known as “The Queen of the Slow Waltz” in early 20th Century Paris. It was first performed about 1904 and subsequently published in 1919. Underneath her Greenaway hat, Showing the burst of a smile, Of a laugh charming and fresh Of a surprised baby who sighs, Little girl with velvety eyes, It’s the Diva of “the Empire,” It’s the queen of whom gentlemen become enamoured And all the dandys of Piccadilly. Dans un seul “yes” elle mettant de douceur Que tous les snobs en gilet à coeur, L’accueillant de hourras frénétiques, Sur la scène lancent des gerbes de fleurs, Sans remarquer le rire narquois De son joli minois. In only a “yes” she puts such sweetness That all the snobs in waistcoats, Welcome her with frantic hurrahs, On the stage toss wreaths of flowers, Without noticing the mocking laugh Of her sweet little face. Sous le grand chapeau Greenaway, etc... Underneath her Greenaway hat, etc... Elle danse presque automatiquement, Et soulève, aoh! très pioudiquement, Ses jolis dessous de fanfreluches; De ses jambes montrant le frétillement. C’est à la fois très très innocent Et très très excitant. She dances almost automatically, And lifts up, oh very modestly, Her underthings of frills and garters, Of her legs showing the quivering. It is at the same time very very innocent And very very exciting. Sous le grand chapeau Greenaway, etc... Underneath her Greenaway hat, etc... i Repertoire Paulette Darty la diva de “l’empire” intermezzo Américain Arranged for solo Guitar by GREGG NESTOR erik satie (1866 - 1925) Temps de marche Modérée [© »84] j 2 3œ ‰ # 2 2 œ 4 œ 0 œ 2œ œ Guitar V 4 3 00 œœ ‰ ‰ Jœ ‰ 1œ 1 6= D f 6 III 3 4 III # ≈≈ œœ .œ œ ≈≈2 œœ .œ œ2 3 V 2 J ‰ œ J ‰ 3 œ 1 p léger 5 ≈ ≈ 3œ 4 # . 1œ . œ œ 0œ . œ œ V . œ œ 2 0 4 3œ 0 3œ 6 F 9 4 3 ≈ œ œ œœ .2 ≈ J ‰ œ 4 # 1œ . œ œ 0œ . œ œ V œ œ 2 0 4 3œ 0 3œ 17 6 2 # 12 œœ V 3œ 21 6 2 œ œ b œœ 1 bœ 3 ‰ 0 4 3 3 4 III ≈ ≈ œ2 2 œ œ œ œ ≈ œœ .2 ≈ 23 œœ .œ œœ .
