GRAMINACEOUS OR
LEGUMINOUS FODDER
CROPS
In France, grass areas account for 45% of utilised agricultural surface; cultivated
meadows represent 23% of grass areas, i.e. 3 million hectares and 25.000 tons of
fodder seeds for sown meadows (*average 2004-2009):
•
•
6 300 tons of leguminous fodder seeds
•
Alfalfa ………… 2 500 tons
•
Red Clover ……… 900 tons
•
Crimson Clover
400 tons
20 000 tons of graminaceous fodder seeds
•
Italian Ryegrass …… 7 400 tons
•
Perennial Ryegrass 5 000 tons
•
Dactyl ………………… 2 300 tons
•
Fescues ………………… 1 800 tons
• Hybrid Ryegrass …… 1 500 tons
Concerning turf surfaces: 1,5 million ha in turf including 1 050 000 ha in private lawns
and 20 000 tons of seeds used yearly.
OUTLETS FOR FODDER
AND GRASS SEEDS
Fodder plants are used for animal feeds (60%).
The market for public parks and gardens represents 36%. The development of agrienvironmental regulation developed the use of these plants to capture nitrates, to fight
against erosion, to protect game, to cover fallows (4%).
PLANT BREEDING, VARIETY More than 30 new varieties of fodder species and 15 of turf species are registered
IMPROVEMENT yearly:

RESEARCH
ACHIEVEMENT
More than 800 varieties registered in the French official catalogue (list A)
including 140 varieties of leguminous types and 490 varieties of graminaceous
types for 32 species
15 breeding companies
1 maintenance network of fodder and turf genetic resources concerning 31
graminaceous or leguminous species and gathering 582 accessions in the
national collection
12 to 15 years to create a new variety
5% of the turnover devoted to research
For fodder crops:
•
Facilitation of meadow exploitation (precocity of ear emergence, flexibility of
exploitation, less remontant varieties…)
• Improvement of yield with a better distribution during the year
• Improvement of feed value (digestibility, palatability)
For turf crops:
• finer and denser plants
• Improvement of trampling resistance
• Improvement of disease resistance
35.000 tons of certified seeds are produced, sorted, treated and packaged yearly:
