In the very heart of the Basque Country, the Festival of Sciences in Bidarte took place from April 9 to 11, 2015. On
this occasion, I had the opportunity to carry out an interactive workshop on my PhD research topic: the Physics
of Surfing. This popular-scientific lecture was open to all, next to the St Joseph Chapel of Bidart, right in front of
the ocean.

Many concepts of fluid mechanics (such as waves, buoyancy, friction, surface tension, Leidenfrost effect, hydrodynamic forces) were adressed. They were discussed and explained both building on analogies in our everyday life
and projecting videos, pictures, schematics on the chapel wall. People were really interested and many questions
were asked!
To present the world of research and make it accessible to all, I put the public in the researcher position. Using image processing on on-site surf videos, we extracted trajectories and velocities of surfers and crest of waves to
compare them.

The Physics of Surfing Workshop was a perfect combination between the world of surfing and the world of research.
This extraodinary encounter between researchers’ knowledge and surfers’ feeling has been profound and fruitful on
both sides!
