MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER
LE MESSAGE DU TRESORIER
I
t has been a pleasure, a pri vil ege and a great chall enge to
serve as Treasu rer of the Law Society of Upper Canada
for the past two years. W hile my term as Treasurer wil l end
o n June 22°d. 2005, the me mories of serving in this office
will go on l'nr many months a nd years. Among my fo ndest
memories are the Call to the Bar Ceremonies.

T he pride, happiness and sense of accomplishment evident
in the face of student after student are powerful reminders
that ours is a profe ssion both sought after and strong.

autres , nous rappellent vivement que notre profession est forte
et recherchee.

For all who are called on this day, I need not remind you
that today marks one of the most signifi cant milestones of
your lives. O n this day you are called to join a noble and
independent profession. On this day you are called to commit
yourselves to ongo ing learning. to civility and to public
service. Jn addition to appreciating the meaning of the law
and to meeting the expectations of a requisite number of
billable hours, your licence to practice law means that you
have the social responsibility that accompanies professions
in general and the legal profess ion in particular. Your
special ized knowledge will provide un ique opportunities to
serve others, whether locally. nationally or globally.
The opportunities to serve are endless. They are avai lable
to you as either a barrister or a soli citor. They may include
service to individuals who are trying to gain access to the
administration of justice or assistance to not for profi t
organisations in need of legal advice that supports their
own mandate of community service.
As you prepare to wal k across the stage to be wel comed
to our profession by the next Treasurer of the Law Society
of Upper Canad a, I invite you to refl ect upon all that th is
profession has to offer you and to be generous in offering
yourse lves in return. May you enjoy the challenges that
await you and in meeting each challenge may you remain
faithful to th e highest standards of our profession and to
the ideals that you espou se on this day.

autres, que ce soit au pal ier local, national ou international.
Les occasions de rendre service sont ill im itees. Yous en aurez
soit comme avocat soit comme procureur. II peut s'agir de
services it des particuliers qui essaient d'avoir acces a
]'administration de ]a justice OU de preter assistance a des
organismes sans but lucratif qui ont besoin de services
juridiques pour appuyer leur mission de servir la communaute.

CALL TO THE BAR
ADMISSION AU BARREAU

T
he ceremony of Call to the Bar takes place in
two separate procedures. First, the Benchers
of The Law Society of Upper Canada, who are
responsible for the governance of the legal
profession in Ontario, are called to order on the
stage in a Special Convocation by the Treasurer,
who is the head of the Society. The candidates
will be presented by a representative of the
Professional Development, Competence and
Admissions Committee to the Treasurer who will
confer on them the degree of Barrister-at-Law and
call them to the Bar of Ontario. Convocation will
then adjourn and a Special Session of the Court of
Appeal for Ontario and the Superior Com1 of
Justice will be convened by the Registrar. The
Chief Justice of Ontario or his designate will
preside over the administering of the Oath of
Allegiance, the Barristers Oath and the Solicitors
Oath, to the newly called members of the Bar. The
Court will then adjourn. Upon completion of these
two ceremonies the graduates become Barristers
and Solicitors, authorized to practise law in the
Province of Ontario.

tresorier, qui est chef de la direction du Barreau,
ouvre un Conseil extraordinaire sur l' estrade des
conseillers du Barreau du Haut-Canada, qui sont
responsables de I' administration de la profession
d'avocat en Ontario. Une representante ou un
representant du Comite du perfectionnement
professionnel, de la competence et des admissions
presente les candidats et candidates au tresorier
qui leur remet le dipl6me d'avocat-plaideur ou
d'avocate-plaideuse et Jes re~oit au barreau de
!'Ontario. La seance du Conseil est alors levee
et le greffier convoque une session extraordinaire
de la Cour d'appel de !'Ontario et de la Cour
superieure de justice. Le juge en chef de !'Ontario,
Ja personne qu'iJ designe, preside a Ja prestation
du serment d'allegeance, du serment des avocatsplaideurs et de celui des procureurs par les
nouveaux membres re~us au barreau. La seance de
la Cour est alors levee. A I' issue de ces deux
ceremonies, Jes dipl6mes et dipl6mees deviennent
avocats-plaideurs ou avocates-plaideuses et
procureurs OU procureures, et sont autorises a
exercer le droit dans la province de !'Ontario.
