THINGS TO SEE AND DO
PONT DU GARD
• The Roman aqueduct in Nimes is spectacular. That is a nice afternoon too.
Perhaps combine with a trip to Arles (the Wed. market in Arles is HUGE),
and see the Roman museum and arena or just stroll the old center of town.

CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
• The village is charming, and the wine tasting is superb (Chateau le Nerthe
is a favorite), but premium $$$ of course. You can also try a loop through
Gigondas and numerous little wine villages in that area (Sablet, Vacqueras,
Beaumes-de-Venise, Séguret, Rasteau). It’s a nice day trip and expect to
taste a LOT of wine :)

THEATRE ANTIQUE
• The Roman Theater in Orange is one of only 3 left in the world with an
intact stage wall. It makes a nice 1/2 day visit if you like history.

VAISON-LA-ROMAINE
• A very nice village with roman ruins and a very nice church with cloisters,
and the old haute village is beautiful. They have a huge Tuesday market.

LES BAUX-DE-PROVENCE
• Nice perched village (if a bit touristy). The Carrieres de Lumiere there is
definitely worth seeing. Allow 1/2 day to see that and walk the village. St.
Remy is close--you could combine the two into a full day. I'd recommend
Les Baux early in the AM, then a late lunch in St. Remy.

THE POPES’ PALACE
• The Popes Palace (Palais des Papes) in Avignon is very interesting, and
Avignon is nice to stroll around, especially some of the smaller back roads.
Don't spend $ to go on the bridge (sur le pont, d'avignon)--you can see it
just fine from below and it isn't that interesting!

SAINT ANDRÉ ABBEY & GARDENS
• The Fort and Abbaye Saint André is in Villeneuve les Avignon (just across
the river from Avignon). The owners are lovely and the gardens are
amazing. Go early and avoid the heat, then have lunch in the gardens
(you can buy a picnic lunch for two for about 20€).

SAULT & LAVENDER FIELDS
• The village of Sault (pronounced like "sew") west of Mont Ventoux is the
place for lavender. If you want to admire the huge lavender fields and stroll
a beautiful hilltop village you will love it. Their market is on Wednesday.
THE LUBERON
• The Luberon towns of Ménerbes, Bonnieux, Ansouis (small but lovely) and
Roussilon are our favorites. Gordes is dramatic, but crowded and one of
the most touristy.
CASSIS
• On the coast, but Cassis is lovely. Get there early--it gets crowded
SCENIC DRIVE
• A very nice drive is to loop through Les Dentilles. You go from Bedoin
west on the Route de Malaucène over the Col de la Madelein to
Malaucène, then head to Suzette, La Roque-Alric, Lafare, Beaumes-deVenise, Le Barroux, and back to Bedoin. Best done in the evening or early
morning for spectacular views!
