Congratulations to Michael Foster, who won instructor of the summer in August 2009 for the Upward Bound College Prep Academy here at University of Illinois. Michael worked as an English instructor over the summer. Michael Foster also presented "TBLT Materials Development as an Instance of Action Research" at the 3rd Biennial International Conference on Task-Based Language Teaching on September 14, 2009 at Lancaster University. FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING SHARE FAIR Fourth annual Foreign Language Share Fair Friday, November 13 th , 3-6 p.m., Lucy Ellis Lounge. The general goal of the share fair is to provide foreign language instructors a means in which to share ideas and activities spanning several categories of foreign language education. Faculty members and graduate students will be encouraged to present for five minutes on a variety of topics relevant to the foreign language classroom such as, but not limited to: technology in the FL classroom, teaching grammar and vocabulary, using music in the FL classroom, teaching reading/listening comprehension, classroom management/discipline issues, teaching culture, and building skills in speaking. Following the presentations there will be time for some Q&A based on the presentations along with some refreshments. For those interested in submitting a proposal to the Share Fair, below are the criteria for share fair submissions: 1) 1-page proposal 2) any relevant illustrations 3) why the idea is pertinent to foreign language teaching 4) applicability of the idea to the foreign language classroom 5) a list of equipment needed for the presentation (projector, computer, etc). Participants will furnish their own hand-outs. Please submit your abstract ideas no later than Friday, October 30th, to Michael Foster at [email protected]. CALL FOR PAPERS Significant Readings: 4th Annual Department of French Studies Graduate Student Conference at Louisiana State University 12-13 March 2010 Dr. Tom Conley will be the literature keynote and Dr. Zsuzsanna Fagyal will be the linguistics keynote. The 4th Annual Graduate Student Conference, hosted by the Department of French Studies at Louisiana State University, aims to explore the continued importance of signs and symbols in French literature and linguistics. In what ways are signs and symbols used in language to represent/distort or maintain/subvert the status quo? How have certain symbols evolved throughout French literary history? How do symbols reflect cultural ideals?
