A very proud young boy, indeed, is holding Du Murier Poker Deltaplane ET, VG 87. Émile is the son of Bruno
Soucy and Hélène St-Pierre, from the Ferme Du Murier Farm. Deltaplane has a projection, at 3 years 5 months,
of 9,052 kg of milk, with components of 5.2% fat and 3.2% protein.
C'est un jeune garçon bien fier qui tient Du Murier Poker Deltaplane ET, TB 87. Émile est le fils de Bruno Soucy
et Hélène St-Pierre, de la Ferme Du Murier. Deltaplane a une projection, à 3 ans 5 mois, de 9052 kg de lait,

2012 was a very busy year for the
office staff. Several projects were set
up, many events were covered, and a
good representation was ensured across Canada.
For you members, I hope that, despite the fewer staff available over the
last year, you have been well served. Your understanding of the situation
was much appreciated. For me, personally, 2013 will be a year of new
beginnings. My journey will take on a new path. I thank each and every
one of you for the great moments that you have given me, either through
a simple phone call or when we had the chance to meet at various events.
For you, 2013 will be a year of adaptation. A new President, a new
General Manager, and a new Registrar: this represents a lot of change, but
it will bring a breath of fresh air to the Association. Jean-Philippe has a lot
to offer as President, from leadership to a new vision. As for Lora, I have
had the chance to meet her in the past, and I am confident that her
enthusiasm, her positive disposition, and her contacts within the Industry
will make her an excellent General Manager for the Association. There are
big shoes to fill, but I am confident that Laura will do it successfully.
Genomics are more and more present; make use of this technology, and
do not hesitate to ask for more information to help you better understand
what it can bring you. The International Dairy Showcase is fast
approaching: make a point in 2013 of attending these events to meet
other breeders and introduce yourselves. It is always interesting to learn
how other breeders manage their herd, their animals, and the sires that
they use. Seize these opportunities to chat with other passionate people!
For the event organizers, your attendance is their best reward.
We will probably meet again during these events. The Ayrshire Cow
introduced me to a lot of people before and during my employment –
and, hopefully, will also after!

L’année 2012 en a été une bien chargée pour nous, le personnel du
bureau. Plusieurs projets ont été mis en place, plusieurs événements,
couverts et une bonne représentation, réalisée sur le territoire canadien.
Pour vous, j’espère qu’une année avec moins de personnel pour vous
servir ne vous a pas trop affecté. Votre compréhension de la situation fut
très appréciée. Pour moi, l’année 2013 en sera une de nouveaux défis.
Une nouvelle voie est en effet sur mon chemin. Je vous remercie tous et
chacun pour les moments que vous m’avez procurés, lors de vos simples
téléphones ou encore lorsqu’on a eu la chance de se croiser dans divers
événements. Sincèrement, un gros merci.
Pour vous, l’année 2013 en sera une d’adaptation. Un nouveau président,
une nouvelle directrice générale, un(e) nouveau(elle) régistraire : c’est
certainement plusieurs nouveautés, mais cela va apporter un nouveau
souffle à l’association. Jean-Philippe a certainement beaucoup à apporter
en tant que président : du leadership et une nouvelle vision. Quant à Lora,
j’ai eu la chance de la côtoyer dans le passé et je suis certaine que son
dynamisme, sa bonne humeur et ses contacts dans l’industrie vont faire
d’elle une excellente directrice pour l’association. Il n’est jamais évident de
chausser les souliers de ceux qu’ils l’ont fait avant nous, mais Lora saura
le faire avec brio, j’en suis convaincue.
La génomique est de plus en plus présente; utilisez cet outil et n’hésitez
pas à demander des informations pour mieux comprendre ce qu’elle peut
vous apporter. Le Salon International Laitier arrive à grands pas : donnezvous en 2013 le mandat d’être présent aux événements, afin de fraterniser
entre éleveurs et de vous faire connaître. Aussi, il est toujours intéressant
de savoir comment les autres gèrent leur troupeau, leurs animaux et les
taureaux qu’ils utilisent. Prenez ces opportunités pour aller jaser avec
d’autres passionnés! Pour les organisateurs, c’est la plus belle récompense
que vous pouvez leur donner…votre présence.
Nous nous reverrons certainement dans ces événements. La Ayrshire m’a
fait connaître beaucoup de monde avant mon emploi, pendant et, je
l’espère également, après!

2013: A Year to Take Action, Connect with the Industry, and Make Milk,
A Lot of Milk my Friends!
D’abord, je voudrais remercier le conseil d’administration pour sa
confiance apportée à mon égard à titre de nouveau président.
First of all, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for putting its trust
in me as its new President.
Vous trouverez plus bas un tableau indiquant mes priorités pour l’année
2013. Ainsi, vous serez en mesure de suivre l’état d’avancement des
dossiers tout au long de l’année à travers les revues. De plus, voici des
décisions prises par le Conseil d’administration lors de notre dernière
assemblée annuelle.
You will notice a matrix below highlighting my priorities for 2013. It will
allow you to follow up on the progress of these files throughout the year
via the Reviews. In addition, here are some decisions that were taken by
the Board of Directors during our last Annual General Meeting.
1. The Board of Directors is made up of 9 Directors. From this group,
five are part of the Executive. From now on, all Directors will be
further involved in the decision making process. We want people to
be involved and, as such, we will ensure that they are. We will work
as a team!
2. As many of you already know by the time of publication, the Board
of Directors has announced the hiring of Ms. Lora Bender as General
Manager. Previously, Lora was Events Coordinator at Holstein Canada.
To facilitate her transfer to our team, she will progressively be joining
us as of March 25th. I invite you all to welcome her at the Spring Show
(IDS) and share with her your passion for the Ayrshire Cow.
In this current era of communication, connecting with the Dairy Industry
is an essential reality. Let’s spark the interest of all shareholders in our
Ayrshires. Their perception toward our Ayrshires is as powerful as the
product itself. By socializing, collaborating, and sharing the benefits of our
animals, you will notice that they will generate business opportunities for
us. Success springs from our initiatives and our actions.
Do not hesitate to communicate with one of your Directors if you would
like more information on our direction as an Association.
Let us be proud, fulfill ourselves, and have fun.

1. Le Conseil d’administration est composé de 9 directeurs. De ce
groupe, cinq font partie de l’exécutif. Dorénavant, tous les directeurs
seront impliqués davantage dans le processus décisionnel. Nous
souhaitons que les gens s’impliquent et nous nous assurerons qu’ils y
participent. Nous travaillerons en équipe!
2. Comme plusieurs d’entre vous le savez déjà au moment de la parution de cette revue, le Conseil d’administration a annoncé l’embauche
de Madame Lora Bender à titre de Directrice générale. Auparavant,
Lora était coordonnatrice des événements chez Holstein Canada. Afin
de faciliter son transfert approprié dans notre équipe, elle se joindra
progressivement à nous à partir du 25 mars. Je vous invite tous à lui
souhaiter la bienvenue lors de l’expo de printemps (SIL) et de lui
partager votre passion pour la vache Ayrshire.
Dans cette ère de communication, connecter avec l’industrie laitière est
une réalité indispensable. Suscitons l’intérêt de tous les intervenants
envers nos Ayrshires. Leur perception à l’endroit de nos Ayrshires est aussi
puissante que le produit lui-même. En socialisant, collaborant et en leur
partageant les bienfaits de nos animaux, vous serez à même de constater
qu’ils créeront pour nous des opportunités d’affaires. Le succès débute
avec nos initiatives et nos actions.

Bonjour passionnés de la Ayrshire! J’aimerais remercier le conseil
d’administration et les membres de m’accueillir chaleureusement dans
l’équipe Ayrshire. Je suis honorée et très heureuse à l’idée de représenter la
communauté Ayrshire au sein de l’industrie laitière et à travers le monde.
Hello Ayrshire enthusiasts! I would like to thank the Board of Directors and
the membership for welcoming me to the Ayrshire team. I am honoured
and thrilled to represent the Ayrshire community within the Canadian dairy
industry and around the world.
As I begin my duties as General Manager, I welcome you to contact
me with any questions or topics you want to discuss as I am always
listening and open to suggestions and feedback 905-873-5672 [email protected]
Collaboration with Industry Partners and working cooperatively with Ayshire
Québec will be essential as the industry is changing rapidly. Success will
result from effective communication, proper strategic planning, and building
efficiencies and partnerships wherever possible.
As the Ayshire Canada mission states: “The Ayrshire breeders' Association is
dedicated to the well-being of its members and shall provide them with
leadership to ensure individual and collective growth and development
in a global market." I am sure that my enthusiasm and passion for the Canadian dairy industry will open doors to the global marketplace opportunities
for purebred Ayrshire Cattle and I whole heartedly accept the challenge of
promoting Canadian Ayrshire genetics nationally and internationally.
I look forward to working with the staff and the Board of Directors, and
I am eager to meet many of you at the upcoming International Dairy
Showcase this April 18th -19th in St-Hyacinthe, Québec. Spring is in the air
with warmer beginnings and I am confident there is a bright future ahead!

Il sera essentiel de collaborer avec les partenaires de l’industrie et travailler
en synergie avec Ayrshire Québec en raison de l’évolution rapide de
l’industrie. Notre succès dépend d’une communication efficace, d’une
planification stratégique adéquate, d’une amélioration de la rentabilité et de
l’établissement de partenariats, dans la mesure du possible.
Tel que stipulé, Ayrshire Canada a pour mission d’ “assurer le bien-être de
nos membres et agir en tant que chef de file afin d'assurer la croissance
et le développement individuel et collectif de ces derniers dans un
marché universel”. Je suis convaincue que mon dynamisme et ma passion
pour l’industrie laitière canadienne ouvrira toutes grandes les portes aux
opportunités qu’offrent les marchés mondiaux pour le bétail Ayrshire de race
pure et j’accepte avec enthousiasme le défi de promouvoir la
génétique Ayrshire canadienne sur les scènes nationale et internationale.
J’attends avec impatience de travailler avec les employés et le conseil
d’administration, et j’ai hâte de rencontrer plusieurs d’entre vous au prochain
salon laitier international ce 18-19 avril à St-Hyacinthe, Québec. Ça sent le
printemps et le renouveau, et je suis certaine qu’un avenir radieux s’annonce
pour nous!

THE 113TH AGM OF THE AYRSHIRE BREEDERS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA /
LA 113E ASSEMBLÉE GÉNÉRALE ANNUELLE DE L’ASSOCIATION DES ÉLEVEURS AYRSHIRE DU CANADA
About a hundred people made the trip this year to Joliette, Québec, to attend the
Association’s Annual General Meeting. Activities began on Wednesday evening at the
Ferme Bavaroise Farm, where the Poirier family warmly hosted us. We were treated
with a dinner featuring local flavours as well as a high quality herd.
The AGM Selection Sale’s animals were also on site, allowing all guests to look at
them. Consignations from Ferme Bavaroise Farm, Ferme De La Plaine Farm, Ferme
Kildare Farm, and Julie et Mario Lacerte’s – one from each – were present. Kildare
Remington Violette ET obtained the highest sale price of $4,600. She was acquired
by Andrew Hornbrook from Mount Middleton, NB, through Peter Rossiter. Andrew is
a young passionate breeder who is very pleased with his purchase. Having had the
opportunity to watch videos of the consignations posted on YouTube and Facebook,
he was confident spending his savings in the purchase of his first Ayrshire! We wish
him lots of success and, undoubtedly, this heifer will turn into a good breeder, as she
comes from the Kildare Wilton Verro ET, EX-94 Family.
Thursday was dedicated to the AGM, and Mr. Mario Perreault, from Holstein Canada,
and Mr. Brian Van Doormaal, from CDN, give us presentations. The lunch break was
devoted to presenting the winners of the All-Canadian Contest (see p.42 for results)
and of the Production prizes.
The Master Breeders Banquet was filled with great moments, as many Ayrshire
personalities were being recognized. Once again, the Maritimes were prominently
featured with, among others, the Award of Merit presentation. Congratulations to

Nous lui souhaitons beaucoup de succès et, sans aucun doute, cette génisse sera être
une bonne éleveuse, provenant de la famille de Kildare Wilton Verro ET, EX-94.
La journée du jeudi était dédiée à l’AGA, où nous avons eu la chance d’avoir une
présentation de Monsieur Mario Perreault, de Holstein Canada, ainsi que de Monsieur
Brian Van Doormaal, de CDN. La pause du midi fut consacrée à la présentation des
gagnantes du concours Toute-Canadienne (voir p. 42 pour les résultats) ainsi que des
prix de production.

Le banquet des maîtres-éleveurs se voulait rempli de bons moments afin de féliciter
plusieurs personnalités Ayrshire. Encore une fois, les maritimes ont été à l’honneur
avec, entre autres, la présentation de la Personnalité de l’année. Un immense Bravo
à Garnet Schellen, qui le mérite amplement. N’hésitez pas à aller le féliciter lors du
Salon International Laitier! Également, le membre jeunesse qui représentera le Canada
en avril lors de la Conférence Mondial Jeunesse en Écosse et Angleterre a été dévoilé.
Plusieurs candidatures ont été reçues, et c’est de façon anonyme qu’elles ont été
présentées au conseil d’administration. L’élue de cette année fut Terri Lynn Waterston,
de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Nous lui souhaitons un très beau voyage, elle qui sera, nous
en sommes certains, une très bonne déléguée. Monsieur Marcel Dubeau a également
été honoré lors de la soirée, en recevant le titre honorifique de Membre honoraire à
vie. Monsieur Dubeau étant de la région de Joliette, ce fut un bel honneur pour lui
d’être récompensé. Puis, la soirée fut mise en place pour la présentation des cinq
maîtres-éleveurs de l’année 2012. Je vous invite à lire leurs présentations, afin d’en
savoir plus sur eux et leur travail accompli.
Une courte mais touchante présentation fut aussi mise en place par le personnel du
bureau Ayrshire, au nom des éleveurs, afin de souligner et de remercier chaleureusement Madame Linda Ness, qui a travaillé pendant de nombreuses années à l’association. Une toile, d’une photo prise par elle-même en Afrique du Sud lors de la
dernière conférence mondiale, lui a été remise.

Garnet Schellen, who fully deserved this Award. Do not hesitate to congratulate him
at the International Dairy Showcase! The Ayrshire Youth Member who will be representing Canada in April at the Great Britain & Ireland Youth Members’ Gathering was
also revealed. Many candidacies had been received and anonymously presented to
the Board of Directors. This year’s elected representative is Terri Lynn Waterston,
from Nova Scotia. We wish her a great trip; we know for certain that she will be a
wonderful delegate. Mr. Marcel Dubeau was also honoured during the evening,
receiving the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award. He was very proud to receive
this Award, especially in his own hometown of Joliette. At last, the five 2012 MasterBreeder Awards were presented. I encourage you to read their tributes, to learn more
about them and the work that they have accomplished.
A short but touching presentation was also given by the Ayrshire office staff, on
behalf of the breeders, to highlight and warmly thank Ms. Linda Ness, who worked
several years for the Association. A painting of one of her pictures taken in South
Africa during the last World Ayrshire Conference was presented to her.
To commemorate great memories for some, and make others envious, Mr. JeanFrançois Simard was given the opportunity of ending the evening with a personal
presentation of the World Conference. His relentless great sense of humour
contributed to ending the evening with a touch of humour and a festive ambiance.
The Master Breeders Cowsmo Suite, sponsored by the Cowsmopolitan Magazine, had
been set up to welcome the guests.
Pour remémorer de beaux souvenirs aux uns, et faire envier les autres, Monsieur
Jean-François Simard a eu la chance de terminer la soirée avec une présentation qu’il
avait préparée sur la conférence mondiale. Sa toujours présente grande humeur a fait
en sorte que la soirée s’est terminée avec un brin d’humour et une ambiance festive!
Une suite pour accueillir les participants était organisée, soit la Suite Cowsmo des
maîtres-éleveurs, suite qui fut une commandite de la revue Cowsmopolitan.
Le vendredi, ce sont trois fermes qui ont ouvert leurs portes, soit la Ferme Kildare,
la Ferme Kildare II, site qui est exploité par Jérôme Poulin Simard, fils de
Jean-François, ainsi que la Ferme de Julie et Mario Lacerte, du préfixe Marilie.
Plusieurs participants ont pris le temps de visiter ces entreprises. Nous tenons également à souligner la participation de gens de l’ouest canadien, des maritimes, de
même que des États-Unis.
On Friday, three farms generously opened their doors to the group: the Ferme
Kildare Farm, the Ferme Kildare II Farm, operated by Jérôme Poulin Simard, son of
Jean-François, and Julie and Mario Lacerte’s Farm (Marilie prefix). Many guests took
the time to visit these businesses. Finally, we wish to highlight the participation of
people from Western Canada, the Maritimes, and even the United States.

It is with great pleasure that we are introducing to you this year’s Honorary Life Member:
Mr. Marcel Dubeau.
C’est avec un énorme plaisir que nous vous présentons le membre honoraire à vie pour cette
année, M. Marcel Dubeau.
In 1974, Marcel acquired his farm from his father, Louis-Philippe Dubeau. For almost
39 years now, he and his spouse Danielle have been operating the Ferme St-Martin,
where he kept his Ayrshire herd until its complete dispersal in 2006. Since then, he has
continued to cultivate his land to produce barley and soy.
C’est en 1974 que Marcel a acquis la ferme de son père Louis-Philippe Dubeau. C’est donc
depuis bientôt trente neuf ans qu’il exploite avec son épouse Danielle la ferme St-Martin,
où il a conservé le troupeau Ayrshire jusqu’à sa dispersion complète en 2006. Depuis, il
continue de cultiver ses terres en produisant de l’orge et du soya.
Marcel and Danielle have three children, Annie, Marie-Ève, and Jean-Philippe, and they
have five grand-children.

Marcel has always been very involved within the agricultural community and he has held
many positions such as Director, Secretary, and President.
Marcel s’est toujours impliqué beaucoup dans la communauté agricole et il a occupé
plusieurs postes soit comme administrateur, secrétaire ou président.
He was a Director for the Lanaudière Milk Producers’ Federation, Secretary and
President of the Lanaudière Ayrshire Club, President of Ayrshire Québec in 1988,
President of the Berthierville Agricultural Fair, and President of the Joliette Agricultural
Society.
Il fut administrateur au syndicat du lait de Lanaudière, secrétaire et président du club
Ayrshire de Lanaudière, président d’Ayrshire Québec en 1988, président de l’exposition agricole de Berthierville et président de la société d’agriculture de Joliette.
When he was a breeder, Marcel acted as judge in various fairs, such as at the ExpoQuébec, in St-Hyacinthe, and in Victoriaville. Throughout his career, he was a regular
exhibitor at agricultural fairs, whether regional, provincial, or national. The St-Martin’s
herd was awarded several banners, and several animals exhibited by Marcel had great
successes in the show rings, winning several championships. Marcel also received the
Master Breeder Award in 2002, which is the greatest honour an Ayrshire breeder can
obtain in his career.
For all of his contribution and his involvement within the Ayrshire breed, the Ayrshire
Breeders’ Association of Canada is happy to award an Honorary Life Membership to Mr.
Marcel Dubeau. Sincere congratulations.

Lorsqu’il était éleveur, Marcel a agi comme juge à plusieurs expositions tel que : l’ExpoQuébec, St-Hyacinthe et Victoriaville. Tout au long de sa carrière, il fut un exposant assidu
aux expositions agricoles tant au niveau régional, provincial que national. Le troupeau
St-Martin s’est mérité plusieurs bannières et de nombreux sujets exposés par Marcel ont
obtenu de très bons succès dans les arènes d’expositions en remportant plusieurs championnats. Marcel s’est aussi mérité le titre de maître-éleveur en 2002, ce prix est le plus grand
honneur qu’un éleveur Ayrshire peut recevoir dans sa carrière.
Pour l’ensemble de sa contribution et de son implication envers la race, l’association des
éleveurs Ayrshire du Canada est heureuse de décerner à M. Marcel Dubeau la reconnaissance
de membre honoraire à vie, sincères félicitations.
This year the winner of the Award of Merit gives new meaning to the tern "Passion for
Ayrshires". Under the mentorship of his father Cornelius Schellen, he developed early an
outstanding eye for a fine animal.
Le récipiendaire de la personnalité Ayrshire de l’année 2012 donne un nouveau sens au mot
*Passion pour la Ayrshire*. Ayant eu son père, Cornelius comme mentor, il a développé très
jeune un bon œil pour les animaux de qualité.
From the young age of 23, he took over his family Ayrshire farm from his parents and his
vision was clear: to improve the breed and promote his herd the best way he could.
Au jeune âge de 23 ans, il a pris la relève de la ferme familiale Ayrshire de ces parents et
sa vision était claire, améliorer la race et faire la promotion de son troupeau du mieux qu’il
pouvait. Sa conviction et sa passion pour la race Ayrshire est difficile à égaler. Il assiste aux
réunions, aux ventes et il est toujours prêt à recevoir sur sa ferme des visiteurs locaux ou
internationaux. Sa détermination a présenté ces animaux aux expositions sur une base
régulière est constante. En plus d’exposer ces animaux localement. Il rempli sa remorque et
avec son camion, il mène ses animaux au salon laitier de St-Hyacinthe et même jusqu’à la
royale de Toronto. Il est toujours interactif avec les autres éleveurs afin de promouvoir notre
magnifique vache Ayrshire. Il a occupé diverses positions au niveau local et national, il fut
notamment vice-président d’Ayrshire Canada. Il prend toujours le temps de publiciser la
Ayrshire et il aide les autres éleveurs à le faire également.
His drive and desire for the Ayrshire breed is hard to match, whether it is attending
Ayrshire meetings, or sales, or hosting international Ayrshire visitors. His determiniation
prehaps shows most when, on a regular bases, he loads up his trailer and trucks his prize
cattle great distances and at large expense to the Spring Show in St-Hyacinthe, and
sometimes even to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. He does so always looking forward
to interact with other Ayrshire Breeders and promote our ever lovely Ayrshire Cow.
Having held various positions locally and nationally as well as serving as a Vice President
of Ayrshire Canada, he always makes time to promote the Ayrshire breed and help
others do so.
Need a top consignment for a sale? Need an advertisement for the Ayrshire Review? Need
someone to take time off to visit other Ayrshire Breeders, he is always willing. Are you at
a show and need to borrow something; are you short of milk and needing a cow; are you
looking for a barn bull for breeding: do you need an extra show cow or need a cow to help
fill your tank: he is always willing to accommodate those requests large or small. A good
business man, he understands the value of the Ayrshire to produce a profitable bottom
line.
This years reciepient has bred, owned and sold some of the top Ayrshire cows in Canada.
He is recognized world wide as having one of the best Ayrshire herds with several bulls
carrying his herd prefex making a positive impact on the breed. A long time Ayrshire
Breeder and promoter of Ayrshire Cattle, owning and operating the ever popular
"Forever Schoon Herd" on Prince Edward Island with his wife Sheryl and son Jarrod, it is
our pleasure to recognize Garnett Schellen.

The Master Breeder prize is the greatest honor given by Ayrshire Canada. It is awarded to breeders who raise animals that excel in
confirmation and production, which takes years of breeding success to achieve. / Le prix Maître éleveur est le plus grand honneur
accordé par Ayrshire Canada. Il est décerné aux éleveurs qui élèvent des animaux qui excellent pour la conformation et la production, ce qui prend des années de succès en élevage pour réussir.
RJM Demers
The 6th generation is currently active on the Ferme RJM Demers Farm, located in
Béthanie, Québec, which is not far from St-Hyacinthe. Over its long history, Ayrshire
cows have always been part of this breeding herd. In 1974, a new page was turned
toward the future, as official milk recording and registrations were introduced at the
farm. 4 years later, Richard purchased the business from his father and, in 1988, he
established the business Ferme RJM Demers with his brother Jean-Marc. 60 cows
were then in lactation.
La 6e génération est présentement active sur la Ferme RJM Demers, située à
Béthanie, non loin de St-Hyacinthe, au Québec. L’histoire remonte à loin, alors que
les Ayrshire ont toujours fait partie de cet élevage. En 1974, une page fut tournée vers
l’avenir, alors que le contrôle officiel et le début des enregistrements furent mis en
place à la ferme. 4 ans plus tard, Richard fit l’achat de l’entreprise de son père et c’est
en 1988 que la compagnie Ferme RJM Demers a été formée avec son frère Jean-Marc.
60 vaches étaient alors en lactation.
Today, it is with much pride that the 6th generation works on the farm. Maxime,
Richard’s son, manages the fields. He also takes care of the farm’s maple grove, mostly as a hobby. Alexandre, for his part, manages the herd. He selects sires, supervises
feeding… he is the herd’s wizard. Alexandre’s spouse, Catherine, gives a hand during
her free time as well as in the evenings and on week-ends, as she also has another job
offsite. They share a passion for exhibitions; as such, it is always a pleasure for them
to attend these. Alexandre and Maxime’s parents are also still very much involved.
Richard oversees the business as a whole, while his wife Louise is always ready to
help and cover as needed.
Aujourd’hui, c’est avec fierté que la 6e génération travaille au sein de l’entreprise.
Maxime, fils de Richard, s’occupe de la gestion des champs. Il s’occupe aussi de
l’érablière de la ferme, un peu à titre de passe-temps! Alexandre, quant à lui, est gestionnaire du troupeau. Il fait les choix de taureaux, s’occupe de l’alimentation…il en
est le manitou. L’épouse d’Alexandre, Catherine, donne un bon coup de main lors de
ses temps libres ainsi que les soirs et fins de semaine, car elle occupe également un
autre emploi à l’extérieur. Ces derniers partagent une passion des expositions, il est
donc plaisant pour eux d’y participer. Les parents d’Alexandre et Maxime sont eux
aussi encore très impliqués. Richard dirige l’ensemble de l’entreprise, tandis que sa
femme Louise est toujours prête à aider et remplacer en cas de besoin.
The Farm currently has 80 cows in lactation. Among these, 9 are EX, 47 are VG, 40 are
GP, and 3 are G. The production average is 7,789 kg with a BCA of 224-210-227. For
2012, the Farm was a matter of fact ranked 5th for its milk quality in the region. The
business owns 565 acres of land, of which 300 are cultivated annually.
In the future, the owners would like to increase the production of milk per cow, by
optimizing their crop yield in the fields. Also, the animals’ comfort will eventually be
improved, and the feeding system, upgraded. Eventually, the Farm will also be transferred from Richard to his sons, Alexandre and Maxime.
For them, their countless hours of work are being rewarded with this Master Breeder
Award, the work for a passion which requires a lot of time and will. In addition, winning this Award with almost no purchased cow at the base of the herd brings them
great satisfaction.
Many cows contributed points toward this Award, such as Demers Medalist Marina
EX 3E, who produced 76,367 kg of milk, Demers Legend Dixie EX 3E with 77,192 kg
of milk, or even Demers Plata Shado VG 86 with a lifetime production of 95,887 kg.
These cows with a non-negligible longevity have greatly impacted the herd. They are
also proud of having cows which stand out at exhibitions, including Demers Sum
Total Cacahuette who was Grand Champion at the Québec Show this year. In
addition, over the last 10 years, Alexandre’s intensified work earned the prefix
Demers 11 All-Canadian Nominations, including 2 Reserve titles. Many
Breeder and Exhibitor banners have also been won,
including in St-Hyacinthe and Brome, and every
time they have the chance, they exhibit
animals in Toronto. Nevertheless, let us
recall that Demers Marcellus Megane
was the first big star of the Farm.
Many cows have received stars
as breeder cows but also for
their great productions. For the
owners, farming is a work and a
passion that is transmitted
from generation to generation.
La ferme actuelle compte 80 vaches en lactation. De celles-ci, 9 sont EX, 47 sont TB,
40 sont BP et 3 sont B. La moyenne de production est de 7789 kg avec un MCR de
224-210-227. Pour l’année 2012, la ferme s’est d’ailleurs vue décerner 5e meilleure
position pour la qualité de leur lait dans leur région. 565 acres de terres sont la propriété de l’entreprise, dont 300 qui sont cultivés annuellement.
Dans le futur, les propriétaires aimeraient augmenter la quantité de lait par vache, en optimisant le rendement dans les champs. Également, le confort des animaux sera éventuellement amélioré, ainsi que le système d’alimentation, modifié. Éventuellement, le transfert
de la ferme entre Richard et ses fils Alexandre et Maxime sera effectué.
Pour eux, c’est le travail de plusieurs heures qui est récompensé avec ce titre de
maître-éleveur, le travail d’une passion, qui demande du temps et de la volonté.
Aussi, de l’avoir remporté avec presqu’aucune vache achetée à la base du troupeau
leur amène une satisfaction.
Pour ce premier titre, ce sont des vaches telles que Demers Medalist Marina, EX 3E,
qui a produit 76,367 kg de lait, Demers Legend Dixie, EX 3E avec ses 77,192 kg de lait
ou encore Demers Plata Shado, TB 86 qui a une production à vie de 95,887 kg qui leur
ont donné leurs points. Ces vaches avec une longévité non négligeable ont laissé leur
marque dans le troupeau. Ils sont également fiers d’avoir des vaches qui se
démarquent aux expositions, dont Demers Sum Total Cacahuette, qui fut la
Grande championne de l’exposition de Québec cette année. Également, au
cours des 10 dernières années, le travail accru d’Alexandre a amené 11
Nominations Toute-Canadienne pour le préfixe Demers, dont 2 titres
de Réserve. Plusieurs bannières d’éleveur et d’exposant ont aussi
été remportées, notamment à St-Hyacinthe et à Brome, et à
chaque fois qu’ils en ont la chance, des animaux sont

Megane qui fut la première vedette de la ferme.
Plusieurs vaches se sont vues décerner des étoiles de
vaches éleveuses, ainsi que des hautes productions.
Pour eux, ce sont un travail et une passion qui se transmettent de génération en génération.

De La Plaine
As years go by, they tend to bring more and more crowning successes to the owners of
the Ferme De La Plaine Farm. Several ribbons at exhibitions, many victories within
their Ayrshire Club, winners of Milk Quality in their region, these are just some of the
honours that they have earned over the last few years. Since January, however, they can
also be proud of their first Master Breeder Award.
Plus les années avancent, plus elles sont couronnées de succès pour les propriétaires
de la Ferme De La Plaine. Plusieurs rubans aux expositions, plusieurs victoires au sein
de leur club Ayrshire, gagnants de la qualité du lait dans leur région, voici en autres ce
qu’ils se sont vus mériter au cours des dernières années. Mais depuis Janvier, ils
peuvent également être fiers de leur premier titre de maître-éleveur.
Their history started in the 1930s when Oscar Neault cleared a piece of land in
Ste-Françoise de Lotbinière, Québec to build his farm. He handed the farm down to his
son Roger in 1953 who, in 1965, took a big step: he registered his first Ayrshire, under
the name De La Plaine. 16 years later, Dominique and his wife Aline bought the
business which they would operate together, before partnering with their daughter
Carine and her husband Jonathan Lemay in 2007. The latter now both work on the
farm fulltime, in addition to Aline and Dominique.
L’histoire remonte aux années 1930 alors qu’Oscar Neault défricha une terre de
Ste-Françoise de Lotbinière, au Québec, pour y bâtir sa ferme. Il remit les rênes de la
ferme en 1953 à son fils Roger. Ce dernier, en 1965, fit une grande étape : il enregistra
sa première Ayrshire et il le fit sous le nom de De La Plaine. 16 ans plus tard, ce fut au
tour de Dominique et sa femme Aline d’acheter l’entreprise qu’ils exploiteront
ensemble, avant de former une association avec leur fille Carine et son mari Jonathan
Lemay, en 2007. Ces derniers y travaillent maintenant tous deux à temps plein, de
même qu’Aline et Dominique.
For them, team work is important. Given the size of the farm and each and everyone’s
tasks, the 4 managers are able to perform all the required work, in the fields as well as
in the barn. As such, it is much easier to cover when someone is gone. Carine and
Jonathan have four children and it is nice for them to be able to enjoy some family
vacations from time to time.
The current herd consists of 130 animals total, including 60 milking cows. The average
milk production is 8,634 kg with BCA’s of 240-223-255. Classification is as follow: 12
Multiple EX, 2 EX, 35 VG, and 12 GP.
Among the Excellent cows are De La Plaine Grange Nemo EX 5E 1★, who produced
65,394 kg of milk with components of 3.5% fat and 3.4% protein, De La Plaine Rhythm
Romi EX 3E 2★, who was Grand Champion on several occasions in various shows, as
well as De La Plaine Perval Pixel EX 2E 1★.
Having now accomplished one of their breeders’ dreams with this Award, their next
wish is to win a Grand Champion rosette at the Royal and at the World Dairy Expo. They
have performed well at these two shows on several occasions, especially in 2008 at the
Royal when De La Plaine Rhythm Romi EX won Intermediate Champion and in 2011 in
Madison when Forever Schoon Ping EX 94 won Intermediate Champion. The latter was
a major acquisition for the farm, as she gave them the chance to sell embryos
worldwide and allowed them to submit sires to insemination centres. Short- and
medium- term goals are to increase the herd’s milk average as well as to modify the
building to offer a more comfortable environment to the animals. The animals are
housed in 2 neighbouring sites, the dairy barn and a barn for replacement heifers.
Aline and Dominique are very proud to see that they have been able to pass on their
agricultural lifestyle to their children and grand-children. Indeed, even though Carine
and Jonathan’s children are still young, they attend Rural Youth events and spend their
free time in the barn. The entire family is also proud to see that people know them and
that they are making an impact on the breed with their animals, as much through
selling their sires to centres as consigning quality animals at various Canadian and
American sales. That people from Sweden and Finland request to visit their Herd
during their journey to Québec also makes them very proud of all the work that they
accomplish with passion daily.
Being involved can be very time-consuming, but they know that it is worth it. Jonathan
does not hesitate to be an ambassador for the breed;
his dedication actually earned him the
Award of Merit in 2011. For him to be
involved, however, is only made
possible by the fact that there also
are dedicated people back
home.
The De La Plaine Herd is a
well-balanced herd in terms
of production and conformation, and it will remain as
such for a long time. This is
how higher heights will be
reached.

Pour eux, le travail d’équipe est important. Étant donné la grosseur de la ferme et les
activités de tous et chacun, les 4 gestionnaires sont en mesure de tout faire, autant
dans les champs que dans l’étable. Il est donc plus facile de remplacer une personne
qui n’est pas là. Carine et Jonathan ont 4 enfants, il est donc plaisant pour eux de
pouvoir profiter de temps en temps de vacances familiales!
Le troupeau actuel compte 130 têtes au total, dont 60 vaches en lait. La moyenne de
production est de 8634 kg avec des MCR de 240-223-255, tandis que la classification est

Parmi les Excellentes, on retrouve De La Plaine Grange Nemo, EX 5E 1★, qui a produit

Ayant franchi un de leurs rêves d’éleveurs avec l’obtention de cette plaque, la prochaine
réalisation qu’ils souhaitent est d’avoir une rosette de Grande Championne de la Royal et
de la World Dairy Expo. Ils y ont fait bonne figure à plusieurs reprises, notamment en
2008 avec De La Plaine Rhytm Romi, EX qui fut Championne Intermédiaire à la Royal et
Forever Schoon Ping, EX 94 qui fut Championne Intermédiaire à Madison en 2011. Cette
dernière fut un achat considérable pour la ferme, leur donnant la chance de vendre des
embryons à l’international et de pourvoir soumettre des taureaux dans des centre
d’insémination. Ils veulent également, à court et moyen termes, augmenter la moyenne
de lait du troupeau ainsi qu’apporter des changements au bâtiment, afin d’offrir un bon
confort aux animaux. Les animaux sont logés sur 2 sites voisins, soit l’étable laitière et
une étable avec les sujets de remplacement.
Aline et Dominique éprouvent beaucoup de fierté à voir qu’ils ont su transmettre leur
mode de vie qu’est l’agriculture à leurs enfants et petits-enfants. En effet, les 4 enfants
de Carine et Jonathan sont encore jeunes, mais sont présent dans les journées de
jeunes ruraux ainsi que dans leur temps libre à l’étable! Pour toute la famille, c’est de
voir que des gens les connaissent, qu’ils marquent la race avec des animaux de chez
eux, autant en vendant des taureaux dans des centres qu’en consignant des animaux
de choix dans divers encans, autant du côté canadien qu’américain. De voir que des
gens de la Suède et de la Finlande demandent à visiter leur troupeau lors de leur
passage au Québec les rend également fiers de ce qu’ils font avec passion à tous les
jours.
Cela demande beaucoup de temps que de pouvoir s’impliquer,
mais ils savent que ça en vaut la chandelle. Jonathan n’hésite
pas pour être un ambassadeur pour la race, et cela lui a
d’ailleurs valu le titre de personnalité de l’année 2011.
Mais pour qu’il puisse y arriver, c’est parce qu’il y a des
gens tout aussi dévoués à la maison.
Le troupeau De La Plaine est un troupeau équilibré en
production et en conformation, et il le restera encore
longtemps. C’est de cette façon que d’autres sommets
seront atteints.

François Beaudry inc.
François Beaudry partnered with his father Roger in 1981. He represents the fourth
generation to work on the farm, which is located in Granby, Québec. Since 1988,
Hélène has been co-owner of the farm and she is very involved in the various tasks
related to the business. The farm was incorporated under the name of Ferme
François Beaudry Inc. in 1992. In addition to François and Hélène, a fulltime
employee completes the team. The 4 children all give a much-appreciated hand during the busy months and at agricultural fairs.
The farm covers 160 acres, where hay and corn silage are cultivated. The herd consists currently of 120 animals, including 56 milking cows, and the milk production
average reaches 9,170 kg with 4.3% fat and 3.4% protein, for a BCA of 261-275-269.
The most recent classification reveals 4 EX, 31 VG, 24 GP, and 6 G.
At Ferme Des Prairies Farm, they always aim for balance between conformation and
production. They want to milk functional, durable, productive, and healthy cows.
Their sires’ selection process is reflective of this philosophy. Embryo transfer is regularly used to exploit the potential of the herd’s best animals to the maximum.
Among the animals having contributed the greatest to this Master Breeder Award is
Des Prairies Prudam EX 91-3E 10H, a cow who had an undeniable impact on the Des
Prairies Herd but also on the Ayrshire breed in general. She is an exceptional cow and
a star within the breed, thanks to her numerous daughters and grand-daughters. It is
not surprising that Prudam was awarded the title of Ayrshire Dream Cow in 2008.
Prudam’s progeny stands out as much in conformation as in production. Prudam’s
dam, Des Prairies Prudel EX-3E-91 6H, also contributed many points by means of
her good lifetime production of 64,575 kg of milk in 6 lactations, with 4.95% fat and
3.52% protein. Des Prairies Xanty VG-89 with a lifetime production of 86,234 kg and
Des Prairies Cassy EX-3E-90 with 60,312 kg are among some of the other cows who
contributed to this honour.
For many years now, the prefix Des Prairies has been synonymous of success in the
exhibition rings. Let us recall, in particular, Des Prairies Patsy VG-88 who was Grand
Champion at the 2011 International Dairy Showcase. To list all prizes won by the Herd
would take too long, but let us say only that it has received over the years a great deal of
All-Canadian, Reserve All-Canadian, and Nominations. Production-wise, Des Prairies
Prada VG-87 was the best producer in the Junior 3 Year Old Class in Canada in 2011. Year
after year, the Herd always ranks among the best in production in the country, having
even earned in 2009 the Highest Average in the 50-64 Records’ category.
François has been a Member of the Ayrshire Canada’s Breed Improvement
Committee for several years, where his honest and specific opinion and his good
judgement are always appreciated and respected. In addition, he is the Director of
the Bedford-St-Hyacinthe Ayrshire Club, and he has also been acting as official judge
for several years. He has been judge at almost all Québec exhibitions, including the
Expo-Québec and the International Dairy Showcase in St-Hyacinthe, and he has also
had the chance of judging in Ontario and the Maritimes. Internationally, he has
judged in Finland, Colombia, South Africa, and the United States. The Des Prairies
Herd is known world-wide; embryos from the Herd’s best cows have been sold
in many countries. François and Hélène are always happy to receive guests,
they are exceptional hosts. They also never hesitate to consign quality
animals at the various Ayrshire sales.
For Hélène and François, receiving the Master Breeder Award is
one more reason to appreciate their Ayrshire but it is foremost
a great motivation to continue breeding animals of the highest
quality in terms of production and conformation to maintain
a sustainable business, without losing sight of the quality of
life with family and friends.

C’est tout un honneur pour la ferme François Beaudry inc. de recevoir sa deuxième
plaque de maître éleveur. Cette ferme Ayrshire, située dans les Cantons de l’est au
Québec, en est à sa 4e génération à exploiter ce troupeau. François et sa femme
Hélène sont actifs à temps plein depuis 1988. Ils prennent les décisions ensemble, il
s’agit d’un travail d’équipe. Un employé est également engagé, ainsi que les 4 enfants
du couple, qui sont toujours présents pour donner un coup de main. Le troupeau a
toujours été en constante amélioration. Aujourd’hui, on y retrouve 4 EX, 31 TB, 24 BP
et 6 B. La moyenne de production est de 9170 kg avec des composantes de 4.3% de
gras et 3.4% de protéines. Le cheptel compte 56 vaches en lactations et un total de
120 têtes.
La ferme s’étend sur 160 acres et les cultures principales sont le foin et le maïs ensilage, ce qu’il amène l’autosuffisance dans leur culture. Les animaux sont sur le même
site, mais dans deux étables différentes; l’étable des vaches de même que l’étable des
animaux de remplacement sont munies de stalles entravées.
Le troupeau compte presque uniquement des vaches élevées.
Les sujets qui ont le plus contribuer au titre de maître-éleveur sont, entre autres, Des
prairies Prudam Ex-91-3E 10H, une vache avec un impact indéniable tant pour le
troupeau Des Prairies que pour la race Ayrshire en général. Elle est une vache
remarquable et une vedette dans la race, par ses nombreuses filles et petites-filles.
Pas surprenant que Prudam s’est vue décerner le titre de vache Ayrshire de rêve en
2008. La progéniture de Prudam se démarque tant en conformation qu’en production. La mère de Prudam, Des prairies Prudel EX-3 E-91 6H à elle aussi procurée
beaucoup de points, grace à sa bonne production à vie de 64,575 kg en 6 lactations, avec
des composantes de 4.95% pour le gras et 3.52% pour la protéine. Des prairies Xanty
TB-89 ayant fait une production à vie de 86,234 kg et Des Prairies Cassy EX-3 E-90, avec

Depuis plusieurs années le préfixe Des Prairies est synonyme de succès dans les

d’énumérer tous les prix remportés par le troupeau, mais disons seulement qu’il a
recueilli au fil des ans énormément de Toute-Canadienne, Toute-Canadienne de
réserve et de Nominations. Côté production, Des Prairies Prada TB-87, fut meilleure
productrice pour la classe 3 ans juniors au Canada en 2011. Année après année, le
troupeau se classe toujours parmi les meilleurs en production au pays, remportant
même en 2009 la meilleure moyenne pour la classe 50-64 relevés.
À la ferme Des Prairies, on recherche toujours l’équilibre entre la conformation et la
production. On veut traire des vaches fonctionnelles, durables, productives et en
santé. Le choix des taureaux utilisés reflète bien cette philosophie. La transplantation embryonnaire est utilisée régulièrement afin d’exploiter au maximum le
potentiel des meilleurs sujets du troupeau.
Pour Hélène et François, recevoir le titre de maître-éleveur est une raison de plus
pour apprécier leurs Ayrshires et c’est surtout
une grande source de motivation pour continuer à élever des animaux de qualité
supérieure pour la production et pour

The Ferme République Farm, currently owned by Marie Lavoie, is located in the
Republic of Madawaska in the northwestern corner of New Brunswick and, more
specifically, in the community of Saint-Basile. Since 1880, the Farm has been passed
down from father to son. In 1963, Edmond went ahead with the purchase 11 purebred
Ayrshire animals from the region of Montreal. As such, he then entered the ROP milk
recording program. He also started using artificial insemination. Through the years,
Edmond succeeded to significantly improve his dairy production and the herd’s
genetics. In 1980, 100 years after the founding of the business, Edmond deservedly
retired. He then decided to hand the torch to his son Georges-Aimé who, with his wife
Céline, ensured the continuity of the dairy farm. In 1981, he decided to build a new
state of the art stable. To deal with the challenge that such a significant investment
represented, he chose to increase the milk production per cow and to buy additional
quota. As such, he improved the herd’s feeding and reproduction and opted for milk
recording.
C’est dans la République du Madawaska au Nord-Ouest du Nouveau-Brunswick, plus
précisément dans la localité de Saint-Basile, qu’est située la Ferme République,
actuellement propriété de Mario Lavoie. Depuis 1880, cette ferme est passée de père en
fils. C’est en 1963 qu’Edmond a fait l’achat de 11 têtes pur-sang Ayrshire dans la région
de Montréal. Il a également commencé à utiliser l’insémination artificielle. Au fil des
années, Edmond a réussi à augmenter sa production laitière et la génétique du
troupeau de façon significative. En 1980, 100 ans après la fondation de l’entreprise,
Edmond a pris une retraite bien méritée. Il a alors décidé de remettre le flambeau à son
fils Georges-Aimé qui, avec son épouse Céline, a entrepris la continuité de l’exploitation laitière. En 1981, il a décidé de construire une nouvelle étable à la fine pointe de la
technologie de l’époque. Faisant face à un défi de taille avec un investissement aussi
considérable, il a choisi d’augmenter la production laitière par vache et d’acheter du
quota additionnel. Pour ce faire, il a amélioré l’alimentation et la reproduction du
troupeau et opté pour le contrôle laitier.
Aside from the various daily tasks, the Ferme République Farm attended annually the
Madawaska Regional Show for almost 50 years. At this event, it was named “Famille
Terienne” in 1982 and 1995. In addition to this regional show, the Ferme République
Farm also attended on numerous occasions several other exhibitions, including the
Fredericton Provincial Show, the Charlottetown, PEI’s Show, the Rimouski Show, the
Québec Show, the St-Hyacinthe Spring Show, the Toronto Royal, and the World Dairy
Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
À part des nombreux travaux journaliers, la Ferme République a participé
annuellement à l’exposition régionale du Madawaska pendant tout près de 50 ans. En
1982 et 1995, elle fut nommée « Famille Terrienne » lors de cet événement. En plus de
l’exposition régionale du Madawaska, la Ferme République a participé à maintes
reprises à diverses expositions, entre autres, l’exposition provinciale de Fredericton,
l’exposition de Charlottetown à l’Île-Du-Prince-Édouard, l’exposition de Rimouski,
l’exposition de Québec, l’expo printemps de St-Hyacinthe, la Royale de Toronto ainsi
que l’exposition mondiale laitière de Madison au Wisconsin.
In 1985, the Ferme République Farm was awarded a distinctive honour. It earned the
best Herd Average across all dairy breeds in New Brunswick, and it also received a prize
for Most Improved Herd. In 1988, the Ferme République Farm earned the Best National
Average of kilogram of milk per cow per year in the Ayrshire breed, with an average of
8,059 kg and a combined BCA of 228.
After 30 dedicated years to his business, Georges-Aimé decided to hand down the farm
to his son Mario. As such, in 2009, Mario took possession of the family farm and
became the fourth consecutive generation to work on and operate the farm. Mario’s
father and mother, Georges-Aimé and Céline, still help a lot with the various tasks
around the farm, in addition to an employee.
For Mario, the Master Breeder Award represents the greatest achievement and greatest
pride for an Ayrshire breeder; in other words, it is comparable to winning the Stanley Cup!
Several cows contributed to earning this Master Breeder Award. Among them is
République Jouet VG-88 who produced 75,872 kg with 4.06% fat and 3.59% protein,
République Ytina VG-88 who produced 73,185 kg with 4.14% fat and 3.31% protein,
République Gala VG-87 with 74,843 kg, and République Lala VG-89 2★. The latter was
Grand Champion in Rimouski in 2006. Some sire that worked well in the herd are Des
Chamois Poker, Kildare Jerry, Duo Star Normandin and Hautpré Kansas. 75% of the
herd inseminations are made with unproven sires.
The Ferme République Farm now owns 70 cows, of which 54 are in lactation, and 56
young animals. Classification shows 5 EX, 31 VG, 26 GP, and 8 G. The herd’s average
milk production is 8,108 kg, for a BCA of 236-234-231.The farm owned 350 acres. 100
are forest, 100 are pasture and 150 are hay. 130 acres are rent to make hay. The herd
alimentation is made with big balle silage and with complete feed.

meilleure moyenne de troupeaux de toutes les races laitières au Nouveau-Brunswick, et
elle a aussi mérité un prix pour le troupeau s’étant le plus amélioré. En 1988, la Ferme
République a obtenu la Meilleure Moyenne Nationale de kilogramme de lait par vache par
année, pour la race Ayrshire, avec une moyenne de 8059 kg et un MCR combiné de 228.
Après 30 ans de dévouement à son entreprise, Georges-Aimé a décidé de céder la
succession à son fils Mario. C’est donc en 2009 que Mario a pris possession de la ferme

grande fierté pour un éleveur Ayrshire, c’est en d’autres mots comme gagner la Coupe
Stanley!!
Plusieurs vaches ont contribué à l’obtention du titre de maître-éleveur. Parmi celles-ci,
on peut mentionner République Jouet TB-88 qui a produit 75,872 kg, à 4.06% de gras et

y faire du foin également. L’alimentation du troupeau est
composée d’ensilage de balle ronde et complétée avec de la moulée
complète.
En ce qui concerne les projets futurs, Mario veut modifier les
bâtiments afin d’améliorer le confort des vaches taries et des
taures gestantes. De plus, l’énergie renouvelable l’intéresse
beaucoup. La Ferme République est donc très fière de son
cheminement depuis 133 ans et espère que cette passion pour
la terre et les animaux se poursuive encore pour plusieurs
générations.

Ronick
Rock Audet and Nicole Lachance are operating, with their daughter Geneviève, the
Ronick Ayrshire Herd in Ste-Gertrude, located in the Abitibi region of Québec. Nicole
and Rock acquired the farm in 1979. At that time, the herd consisted of about forty
crossbred animals – Holstein and Ayrshire – with an average milk yield per cow of
4,869 kg. Nicole and Rock then decided to opt exclusively for the Ayrshire breed and
to buy purebred animals from a good herd, the Clercs de St-Viateur’s Herd. At the
moment of purchase, the farm covered 450 acres, of which 133 were cultivated, and
the milk quota was 10.4 kg/day. Nowadays, the Farm owns 800 acres, of which 274
are cultivated and 40 are rented out, and the milk quota is 44 kg/day. Since 1979, the
farm buildings have been significantly improved and new structures have also been
erected. 2011 was a very important year in the history of the farm, as Geneviève
became the 4th generation in the Audet Family to work on the farm when she
became a 50% shareholder.
Rock Audet et Nicole Lachance exploitent avec leur fille Geneviève le troupeau
Ayrshire Ronick à Ste-Gertrude dans la région de l’Abitibi, au Québec. Nicole et Rock
ont acquis la ferme en 1979. À ce moment, le troupeau était composé d’une quarantaine de têtes croisées, Holstein et Ayrshire, avec une moyenne de 4869 kg de lait par
vache. Nicole et Rock ont alors décidé d’opter pour la race Ayrshire et d’acheter des
sujets pur-sang dans un bon troupeau, le troupeau des Clercs de St-Viateur. Au
moment de l’achat, la ferme s’étendait sur 450 acres, dont 133 en culture, et le quota
était de 10,4 kilo jour. Aujourd’hui, la ferme possède 800 acres, dont 274 en culture
et 40 acres louées, et le quota est maintenant de 44 kilo jour. Depuis 1979, plusieurs
améliorations ont été apportées aux bâtiments et de nouvelles constructions ont
aussi été érigées. L’année 2011 en est une d’importance dans l’histoire de la ferme,
alors que Geneviève devient la quatrième génération d’agriculteurs pour la famille
Audet en devenant actionnaire de l’entreprise à 50%.

for a BCA of 258-256-257. Classification started in 1980 and, today, they count 20 VG,
23 GP, and 5 G.

For their breeding program, the owners of the Ferme Ronick Farm rely greatly on
PROGEN. They use the best proven sires and about 30% of their inseminations are
realized with young sires from the PEP Program.
Pour leur programme d’élevage, les propriétaires de la Ferme Ronick se basent beaucoup sur PROGEN. Ils utilisent les meilleurs taureaux éprouvés et environ 30% des
inséminations sont effectuées avec les jeunes taureaux soumis au PEP.
Here are some of the animals who, through their great successes, contributed to
making the owners worthy of this honour. Ronick Wilton Sierra GV-87 3★ is an
exceptional producer with 61,871 kg of milk in 5 lactations. Sierra is the dam of Ronick
Simbad, an increasingly popular sire in the breed who is the son of Margot Calimero,
property of Alliance Semex. Simbad is considered as one of the best sires to improve the
mammary system and conformation in general; he also offers quite an acceptable proof
with regards to production. Ronick Heligo Pansy EX-2E 1★ is another cow who provided
many points due to her very good longevity. This daughter of Bonnie Brae Heligo
produced 88,232 kg of milk in 10 lactations. Ronick Heligo Sophia VG-85 1★, Ronick
Pardner VG-87, and Sierra’s dam, Ronick Cornelius Sandy VG-85 2★, are some of the
other cows who were important to the breeding of the herd.
Les animaux qui se sont démarqués le plus pour aider à remporter cet honneur sont
Ronick Wilton Sierra TB-87 3★, une productrice exceptionnelle avec 61,871 kg de lait
en 5 lactations. Sierra est la mère de Ronick Simbad, un taureau de plus en plus

At Ferme Ronick Farm, people are dedicated to the quality of the breed and the
owners promote it in an outstanding manner. Indeed, a few years ago, they started
selling Ayrshire animals to several producers across their region, often to young ones
who were starting up in the dairy production. This way, they contribute to making
their herd known but, also, to making the Ayrshire breed known. We congratulate
them for this wonderful initiative and we encourage them to continue with it.
Nicole and Rock are very active in their agricultural and local communities, and they
were honoured to receive a tribute prize from their regional agricultural Society,
awarded for their respective involvements.
The Audet-Lachance couple explains that receiving the Master
Breeder Award is the crowning achievement of 33 years of
work to create an exceptional herd and also that they
are sharing this great honour with their family.
In the future, Rock, Nicole, and Geneviève
wish to improve the crop yield in their
fields and continue to improve
their herd’s genetics and production. In addition, they
would love to attend more
agricultural fairs and be
more involved in the various
Ayrshire breed committees.

À la Ferme Ronick, on y retrouve des gens très convaincus de la qualité de la race et
les propriétaires en font la promotion de brillante façon. En effet, depuis quelques
années, ils ont vendu des Ayrshire à plusieurs producteurs dans leur région, souvent
à des jeunes qui démarrent en production laitière. De cette façon, ils contribuent à
faire connaître leur troupeau et du même coup à faire connaître la race Ayrshire.
Nous les félicitons pour cette belle initiative et nous les encourageons à continuer.
Nicole et Rock sont des gens très actifs dans les milieux agricole et communautaire, et ils ont été honorés en recevant un prix hommage de la
société d’agriculture de leur région pour souligner leurs implications
respectives.
Le couple Audet-Lachance affirme que de mériter le titre de
maître-éleveur représente la consécration de 33 années de
travail à bâtir un troupeau de qualité et c’est aussi une grande
fierté qu’il partage avec leur famille.
Dans l’avenir, Rock, Nicole et Geneviève veulent
améliorer les rendements dans les champs et continuer
d’améliorer la génétique et la production du troupeau.
Également, ils aimeraient participer à plus d’expositions
agricoles et s’impliquer davantage dans les différents
comités de la race Ayrshire. Une participation au
concours du mérite agricole fait aussi
partie de leurs projets.

Wayne Bertrand welcomed everyone to the farm and said that he hoped the
experience would be a rewarding and fulfilling environment. Bernard reviewed
the minutes, budget, and reports from himself, the Secretary, and the Fieldsmen
as were included in the Ayrstrip. Any questions from the breeders were
responded to and answered. Ron Visser updated the group on the Memorial
Fund before we welcomed Henri Hofer to speak on behalf of Ayrshire Canada.
Henri updated the membership on the activities ongoing in the National office,
elaborating on the efforts to find Linda’s replacement. He hoped to have something in place at the AGM to make an announcement. The difficulties encountered with replacing Linda have led to increased workloads on the remaining
staff, resulting in Jenny choosing to move on as well. While there is talk of a

Henri answered breeders’ questions - again saying that he hoped to make an
announcement at the AGM.
Wayne Bertrand a souhaité la bienvenue à tous à la ferme et partagé qu’il espérait
que cette expérience soit enrichissante et gratifiante. Bernard a passé en revue les
procès-verbaux, les budgets et les rapports de sa personne, de la secrétaire, et des
« Fieldsmen » tels qu’inclus dans la Ayrstrip. On a répondu aux questions des
éleveurs. Ron Visser a tenu le groupe au courant du Memorial Fund, puis nous
avons invité Henri Hofer à prendre la parole au nom d’Ayrshire Canada. Henri a
tenu les membres au courant des activités en cours au bureau national, élaborant
sur les efforts accomplis afin de trouver un(e) remplaçant(e) au poste de Linda.
Il espérait avoir des nouvelles concrètes à annoncer lors de l’AGA. Les difficultés
occasionnées par le remplacement de Linda ont augmenté la charge de travail du
reste des employés, ce qui a résulté en la décision de Jenny d’elle aussi passer à
autre chose. En dépit des pourparlers au sujet d’un système d’enregistrement
multi-races, le poste doit tout de même être comblé. La rémunération et attirer
des candidats constituent le cœur du problème. Henri a répondu aux questions
des éleveurs – rappelant à nouveau qu’il espérait faire une annonce lors de l’AGA.
Bernard then re-introduced special guest speaker Harley Nicholson from ABS.
Harley’s presentation was entitled “Managing Your Genetic Investment”. His
goal was to answer how we make our breed more attractive to the commercial
sector. According to him, there are 5 pillars to herd improvement: registration,
DHI, type classification, AI, and young sires. As far as marketing, he stressed
the following: putting the right product in front of the right customer at a time
when the customer is ready to buy; it’s about relationship building. He encouraged breeders to get professional pictures of animals in their prime, exhibit at
shows, have a website, advertise in magazines, have a herd brochure, price
good cattle and respond to enquiries, and be eager to accept tours. He challenged young breeders to purchase or develop a high profile young cow or
heifer with 2-3 breeders you trust and whose breeding philosophy resembles
yours. He highlighted that we need to be aware of the opportunities in the
industry, shows, and the strategic plan of our national organization and ask if
our plan for our herd is in sync with the plan of the national organization. He
finished by saying that we have to embrace technology and spend time and
money to transfer farm assets to the next generation.
Par la suite, Bernard a présenté, à nouveau, le conférencier invité spécial Harley
Nicholson de chez ABS. La présentation d’Harley était intitulée « Managing Your
Genetic Investment » (traduction libre : Gérer votre investissement génétique).
Son objectif était d’expliquer comment nous pouvons rendre notre race plus
attrayante pour le secteur commercial. Selon lui, l’amélioration du troupeau
repose sur 5 piliers : l’enregistrement, le plan d’amélioration des troupeaux laitiers
(DHI), le type de classification, l’insémination artificielle et les jeunes taureaux.
Au niveau du marketing, il a émis la recommandation suivante : présenter le bon
produit au bon client, lorsque ce dernier est prêt à acheter. Il est important
d’établir des relations. Il a encouragé les éleveurs à obtenir des photos professionnelles de leurs animaux lorsqu’ils sont à leur meilleur, parader lors des expositions, avoir un site internet, faire de la publicité dans les magazines, avoir une
brochure publicitaire du troupeau, fixer un prix sur les bonnes bêtes et répondre
aux demandes d’acheteurs potentiels, et accepter avidement les visites . Il a mis
les jeunes éleveurs au défi d’acheter ou développer une jeune vache ou une
génisse de haut niveau avec 2-3 éleveurs en qui ils ont confiance et qui ont une
philosophie d’élevage semblable à la leur. Il a souligné que nous nous devons
d’être familiers avec les opportunités offertes par l’industrie, les expositions et le
plan stratégique de notre association nationale, et se demander si notre plan pour
notre troupeau concorde avec celui de l’association nationale. Il a fini en
déclarant que nous devons accueillir à bras ouverts la technologie et investir du
temps et de l’argent dans le transfert d’actifs agricoles à la prochaine génération.
After lunch, Cynthia gave a presentation on genomics, which had previously
been given at the Breed Improvement Committee Meeting in November. We
discussed the 4-H Awards given to 4-H members exhibiting an Ayrshire calf, and
cemented job descriptions for both the Fieldsmen and the Secretary-treasurer.
Bob Powell was elected as a National Director, replacing outgoing director
Norman Boswall.
In between the meeting and the banquet, also hosted by Shady Walnut,
breeders were free to browse the sale selections available from local herds. The
banquet started at 7:30 p.m., during which Reg Reid won the Alex & Robin
Campbell Memorial Scholarship and the Production and All-Ontario Awards
were handed out. Laverne Green and Anne Spaull were both presented with
Appreciation Awards.
A huge thank you goes out to Wayne & Aubrey Bertrand and their family for
opening up their facilities for this event and for hosting such a wonderful
gathering. Thank you also to the South Western Ontario Club for their work in
putting this all together, and Paul Hampson for co-ordinating the TAG Sale.

de la race en novembre dernier. Nous avons discuté des reconnaissances 4-H
remises aux membres 4-H qui exposent un veau Ayrshire, et concrétisé les
descriptions de tâches pour les postes de « Fieldsmen » et de secrétaire-trésorier.
Bob Powell a été élu directeur national, remplaçant ainsi le directeur sortant

Entre la réunion et le banquet, aussi organisé par Shady Walnut, les éleveurs ont eu
l’opportunité de jeter un œil aux sélections de vente présentées par les troupeaux
locaux. Le banquet a débuté à 19h30. Reg Reid s’est mérité la bourse Alex & Robin
Campbell Memorial, et les prix de production et Toute- Ontario ont été remis.
Laverne Green et Anne Spaull ont tous deux reçus un prix de reconnaissance.

The Bois-Francs Ayrshire Club did a
wonderful job at welcoming the
members of the great Ayrshire
family during the Annual
General Meeting held last
February 1st and 2nd.
The program of activities was
launched on Friday February 1st
with the Annual Meeting. The
members nominated the representatives in the areas where the mandates of outgoing Board Members were
expired. Mr. Bruno Soucy was appointed as
President. He will be supported by Mr. Hugues Denis as Vice-President
and Mr. Hendrick Larouche as the third Executive member. Jean-Philippe
Daunais, Marie-Hélène Labrie, Chris McCaig and Frédéric Rousseau complete the Board for the next year. At the helm, Angèle Hébert, coordinator,
will work with the Board of Directors to lead the projects and reach the
objectives set by the members within the strategic planning. JeanPhilippe Charest, development agent in Eastern Québec, will assume the
field tasks.
The meeting took place according to schedule. The participants approved
the activity reports and the 2012 financial report. The resolutions were
reviewed and voted on. The statutory items having been dealt with, the
members watched the Partners, namely CIAQ, Valacta and CQRL, deliver
their presentations.

C’est avec brio que le Club Ayrshire des Bois-Francs a accueilli les
membres de la grande famille Ayrshire dans le cadre de l’Assemblée
générale annuelle ces 1er et 2 février dernier.
Le programme des activités a été lancé ce vendredi 1er février avec la tenue
de l’assemblée annuelle. Les membres ont procédé à la nomination des
représentants dans les régions où les administrateurs étaient sortants. M.
Bruno Soucy a été nommé à titre de président. Il sera appuyé de M.
Hugues Denis à la vice-présidence et de M. Hendrick Larouche comme
3e membre de l’exécutif. Jean-Philippe Daunais, Marie-Hélène Labrie,
Chris McCaig et Frédéric Rousseau complètent le Conseil d’administration pour la prochaine année. À la barre, Angèle Hébert, coordonnatrice,
travaillera de concert avec le Conseil d’administration pour mener les
projets et atteindre les objectifs établis par les membres dans la planification stratégique. Jean-Philippe Charest, agent de développement pour
l’Est du Québec, assumera les tâches sur le terrain.
La réunion s’est déroulée en respectant l’horaire établi. L’Assemblée a
approuvé les rapports d’activités et le rapport financier 2012. Les résolutions ont été étudiées et votées. Les points statuaires écoulés, les membres
ont assisté à la présentation des partenaires tels le CIAQ, Valacta et le CQRL.
C’est dans une ambiance des plus conviviales que le Cocktail Coop ToutQuébec a permis la présentation des grandes gagnantes du circuit des expositions 2012. Cette remise de prix souligne les efforts des éleveurs Ayrshire à
rehausser le calibre génétique du cheptel et à promouvoir notre race.
Le traditionnel « Banquet des Étoiles » a pris son envol vers les 19 h 30.
Lors du souper, la Société Ayrshire du Québec a souligné les mérites des
meilleures productrices de la dernière année. Les quelques cent invités

for the presentation of the main winners of the 2012 show circuit. This
round of awards underlines the efforts of Ayrshire breeders at increasing
the genetic caliber of the cattle and promoting our breed.
The traditional “Banquet of the Stars” took off around 7:30 p.m. During
dinner, the Québec Ayrshire Society emphasized the merit of last year’s
top producers. About 100 guests ended the evening with an historic presentation of the host club made by Simon Martel.
One of the highlights of the evening was surely the unveiling of the
Ayrshire Dream Cow. Saguenayenne Tri Valentine ET EX-92 3E 5 took the
honours over the other candidates. Congratulations to Ferme Kildare Inc.
from the Lanaudière Ayrshire Club. Ayrshire Québec would also like to
recognize the merits of the other candidates. Each of them, in their own
way, raises the quality of our beautiful Ayrshire breed to a very high level!
Congratulations!
The banquet ended with a Retro theme evening where the members had
the opportunity to show their talents as dancers.

de la vache Ayrshire de rêve 2012. Saguenayenne Tri Valentine ET EX-92 3E 5,

Kildare Inc. du Club Ayrshire de Lanaudière. Ayrshire Québec tient également à souligner les mérites des candidates en lice. Chacune, à sa façon,
élève la qualité de notre belle race Ayrshire à un très haut niveau! Bravo!
Le banquet a été clôturé par une soirée à thématique Rétro où les membres ont eu l’occasion de mettre leurs talents de danseurs.
Le programme des activités de l’Assemblée s’est terminé ce samedi 2 février
avec le circuit des visites de ferme. Merci à la Ferme Janid, la Ferme Ronde et
la Ferme Margot pour leur accueil chaleureux et leur implication.

between the animal and its ability to resist disease
(immunity), an infectious agent (bacteria, viruses
and parasites) and the environment in which it’s

Vaccines increases immunity and can help prevent

a. Limit access by visitors: It is easier to limit access than to prevent it. People

question. These certificates are asked for more and more. If applicable, ask
about and screen for disease prior to arrival (Leucosis, BVD, Neospora, Johnes,
somatic cell count information, S.aureus, Mycoplasma etc.).
b) Troupeau fermé : (de plus en plus difficile) Si vous achetez ou avez des animaux
en pension, il est important de connaître le statut sanitaire de l’animal et de son troupeau. Vous pouvez demander un registre de santé ou même un certificat vétérinaire
attestant la régie de l’animal et du troupeau de provenance. Ces certificats nous sont
de plus en plus demandés. Avant l’achat, questionnez sur la présence, chez l’animal ou
le troupeau d`origine, de maladies tel la leucose, le BVD, Neospora, les cellules somatiques, le Staph. Aureus dans le lait, les mycoplasmes et la paratuberculose.

c. Reduce stress: To reduce stress, ensure a clean, dry and comfortable environment. Animals should have access to clean water, sufficient feed and fresh
air (without drafts).Transport can be stressful to animals. Ensure that the transporter take steps to reduce stress. Don’t forget about sanitation. It is important
to routinely clean and disinfect buildings, barns, equipment, transport trailers.
c) Réduire le stress : Pour réduire le stress, il faut un environnement propre, sec et
confortable. Les animaux devraient avoir accès à de l’eau propre, une quantité d’aliments
suffisantes et à de l’air pur (sans courant d’air). Le transport est un évènement stressant
pour les animaux. Assurez-vous que le transporteur prenne des mesures pour limiter ce
stress. Il ne faut pas négliger le lavage et la désinfection des lieux (étables, camion).
d. Prevent birds, rodents, pets and other animals from coming into contact
with the herd. Certain animals that have access to the farm or pastures can
be vectors for disease. Rodents (Salmonella, Leptospirosis), birds (salmonella),
dogs, stray dogs, coyotes (Salmonella, Neospora), deer (Leptospirosis) are
culprits.
d) Contrôler les animaux nuisibles : Certains animaux qui pourraient avoir accès à
la ferme ou aux pâturages, peuvent être vecteurs de maladies. Les oiseaux (salmonellose),
les rats , les souris (salmonellose, leptospirose), les chiens, les chiens errants, les coyotes
(salmonellose, neospora) et les chevreuils (leptospirose) sont ciblés. Dans la mesure du
possible, il est souhaitable de contrôler la présence et le nombre de ces intrus.
e. Colostrum management: calves are at high risk to infectious disease.
Ensure adequate colostrum quantity, quality and timing for optimal immunoglobulin (IGG) absorption for optimal protection. Calves that to not receive
ample colostrum have low IGG levels. The calves with failure of passive transfer are four times more likely to die and twice as likely to get sick at a young
age (Wells,S.J.,1993).
e) Régie du colostrum : Les veaux sont très susceptibles aux maladies infectieuses.
L’ingestion du colostrum permet au veau l’absorption d’immunoglobuline (IGG) pour
sa défense. Trois points sont importants pour l’ingestion du colostrum. Sa qualité, sa
quantité et la rapidité du premier repas après la naissance. Le veau qui ne reçoit pas
bien son colostrum, aura un transfert passif faible des IGG. Ces veaux auront quatre fois
plus de chance de mourir et deux fois plus de chance d’être malades en très jeune âge.
