Grammaire
When you look up a verb in the dictionary you find the infinitive form. Most French infinitives end in –er.
The ending on the infinitive changes according to the subject of the verb, i.e. who is doing the action:
chanter = to sing
je chante
tu chantes
il/elle chante
on chante
I sing/I am singing
You sing /You are singing
He/she sings/He/she is
singing
We sing/are singing
Notice how in English je chante means both ‘I sing’ and ‘I am singing’.
There is only one form of the present tense in French.
Write these sentences in French, using the verb given in brackets.

ne … pas makes a sentence negative. It forms a sandwich round the verb in the sentence.
Verbs which begin with a vowel or h make je shorten to j’ j’ai une télé.
When you use ne … pas, j’ becomes je again, and ne shortens to n’ je n’ai pas de télé.
Underline the verb in each of these sentences.
Then insert ne and pas in the correct place.
