1 Er valt heel wat moois te ontdekken in deze ruim aangelegde, groene wijk. Startpunt van de wandeling is het erg
mooie STATIONSGEBOUW VAN SCHAARBEEK, dat tevens
het visuele eindpunt is van de monumentale as van de Koningsstraat. Die loopt van het Justitiepaleis langs het
Stadspark, de Kruidtuin, de Koninklijke Sint-Mariakerk en
het Gemeentehuis van Schaarbeek tot aan dit station. In
dit gebouw, een echte spoorwegkathedraal, heeft architect
Frans Seulen met brio een nieuwerwetse metaalstructuur
vermengd met renaissance-elementen. De linkervleugel
met de horlogetoren dateert van 1887, de rechtervleugel
werd er zo’n kwarteeuw later aan toegevoegd.
1 This airy, verdant area offers endless wonders! The
walk starts opposite the beautiful STATION OF
SCHAERBEEK, which is the last monumental landmark on the axis of Rue Royale, which begins at the
Palais de Justice then continues past Parc Royal, the
Botanique, Église Royale Sainte-Marie and the town
hall of Schaerbeek. The architect Frans Seulen combines Renaissance references and metal structures
with panache here. This cathedral of the railways was
constructed in two stages: the left wing and its clock
tower in 1887 and the right-hand section nearly 25
years later.
In 1903 nam burgemeester HUART HAMOIR het initiatief
om een brede laan aan te leggen tegenover het station.
Heel snel ontwikkelde zich een mooie woonwijk langs
deze laan die nu zijn naam draagt en beplant is met merkwaardige bomen, zoals een ginkgo biloba. Bewonder de
rijke huisgevels, afwisselend in bak- en in natuursteen,
zoals op NR 29 gebouwd door A. Laenen. In de 17de eeuw
stond hier een buitenverblijf met de mooie naam
MONPLAISIR, dat later gebruikt werd voor de jacht. Op
het einde van de 18de eeuw was er een porseleinmanufactuur gevestigd en, een eeuw later, de eerste mechanische
wasserij. In 1906 moest het wijken voor de nieuwe Monplaisir-wijk.
Op NR 71 van de Huart Hamoirlaan staat een erg eigenzinnig huis gebouwd door Léon Delune in 1912. De
driehoekige erker is best origineel, met twee vensters die
uitsteken boven de kroonlijst. Bewonder tevens de sgraffito onder het venster van de tweede etage.
In 1903, Mayor HUART HAMOIR had a broad avenue
built, starting from the station in Schaerbeek. A residential area quickly developed. As you walk along Avenue Huart Hamoir, you can admire the remarkable
trees (ginkgo biloba) and the delightful alternating
brick and stone houses, such as N°29 built by A. Laenen. In the 17th century, a “château de plaisance”
(leisure castle) was built on the plains of MONPLAISIR.
Subsequently a popular meeting place for hunting,
the estate was home to a porcelain factory, then in the
19th century the first mechanical laundry in the country, before giving way to the creation of the Monplaisir area in 1906. Designed in 1912, the house built
by Léon Delune at 71 Avenue Huart Hamoir takes the
walker by surprise. The architect designed a triangular oriel window that extends past the cornice. The
crowning aedicule with its two bays is truly unexpected. Another point to admire is the sgraffito
adorning the second floor.
Dès l’entre deux guerres, dans la partie Est se développe
un quartier mixte d’habitations et de petites industries.
En témoigne au N°136, cette ancienne chemiserie
construite en 1921. Située en intérieur d’îlot, cette
fabrique a été convertie pour accueillir aujourd’hui le
HOGER INSTITUUT VOOR GEZINSWETENSCHAPPEN.
Le temps qui passe, l’arbre généalogique, le couple… voici
quelques unes des thématiques représentées dans la
fresque (Gérard Alsteens - Nora Theys) qui en anime
remarquablement l’accès.

A deux pas de L’ÉGLISE DE LA SAINTE-FAMILLE (Colles
- 1937), marquant le passage vers l’ancien hameau de Helmet, se situe au N°38 la Villa Regina. Briques rouges, pignon, ferronneries et décors de faïence confèrent un
cachet historique à cette maison bordant le square qui
porte le nom du compositeur belge François Riga.
5 De l’autre côté du square le N°8 étonne par la monumentalité du dôme contrastant avec le petit clocheton
qu’il supporte !
6 Au N°12, les sgraffites qui décorent cette demeure
datant de 1923 (M. Delcuve) étonnent par leurs tons
chauds. Des marronniers à fleurs blanches embellissent
cette façade et viennent entourer, dans l’alcôve précédant
l’entrée, un profil féminin.
7 Quelques pas dans L’AVENUE DEMOLDER permettent
d’observer la façade du N°152. Un homme et une femme
alanguis encadrent la baie du second étage. Pourtant c’est
la jolie porte d’entrée qui retient l’attention!

Premier lieu d’accueil, la porte d’une maison reçoit
toutes les attentions. Ceci se vérifie tout particulièrement
au N°97 de L’AVENUE EMILE VERHAEREN : les visiteurs
ne peuvent qu’être séduits par le soin apporté au travail de
ferronnerie de la poignée et du judas. Un paon, symbole de
beauté domine l’imposte de cette demeure portant la date
de 1911 et formant avec ses voisines une belle enfilade. Ne
manquez pas d’observer les motifs de marronniers déclinés abondamment sous la corniche du N°83.
4 Op korte afstand van de HEILIGE FAMILIEKERK (1901
en 1937, architecten Collès en Vandendael), op de grens
met het oude gehucht Helmet, vind je op NR 38 de Villa
Regina. Rode bakstenen, een trapgevel, geëmailleerde tegels en ijzersmeedwerk verlenen een ouderwetse uitstraling aan deze woning gelegen aan de FRANÇOIS
RIGASQUARE, genoemd naar een Luikse componist die
in Schaarbeek woonde.
5 Wat een grappig contrast tussen de monumentale koepel van het huis op NR 8, aan de overzijde van het plantsoen, en het kleine klokkentorentje dat er bovenop staat!

Op het NR 12, gebouwd door M. Delcuve in 1923, verrassen de sgraffiti door hun warme kleuren. Kastanjelaren
met witte bloesem tooien de gevel en omringen, in het portiekje, een vrouwelijk profiel.
7 Loop even de DEMOLDERLAAN in tot aan NR 152. Het
zijn niet de smachtende man en vrouw van de tweede
etage die de show stelen, maar wel de mooie deuringang !
8 Logisch dat de deur, de plaats van het eerste contact,
door de architect extra verzorgd wordt. Zoals op het NR 97
van de EMILE VERHAERENLAAN. Elke bezoeker werd onmiddellijk gecharmeerd door het smeedwerk van de deurklink en het judasvenstertje. Op het bovenlicht van deze
woning uit 1911 prijkt een pauw, symbool van onsterfelijkheid. Samen met de aanpalende nummers vormt dit huis
een bijzonder mooie straatwand. Onder de kroonlijst van
NR 83 verschijnt opnieuw het motief van de bloeiende kastanjelaren. Met de straatnaam eerde de gemeente de grote
dichter en kunstcriticus Emile Verhaeren, die trouwens
ook een borstbeeld kreeg in het nabijgelegen Josafatpark.

1 Que de merveilles dans ce quartier aéré et verdoyant !
La promenade débute face à la très belle GARE DE
SCHAERBEEK qui constitue le dernier repère monumental dans l’axe de la rue Royale qui débute au Palais de Justice puis longe le Parc Royal, le Botanique, l’Eglise Royale
Sainte-Marie et l’Hôtel communal de Schaerbeek. L’architecte Frans Seulen y mélange avec brio les références
renaissantes aux structures métalliques. Cette véritable
cathédrale ferroviaire a été construite en deux temps :
l’aile gauche et sa tour d’horloge en 1887 et la partie
droite près de vingt cinq ans plus tard.
3 Het hoekgebouw met de MAETERLINCKLAAN (NR 2)
wordt bekroond door een mooie pergola in art deco-stijl
uit 1937, en herbergt sinds 2006 de kunstschool SASASA.
Meer naar het oosten ontwikkelde zich sinds het interbellum een gemengde wijk met woningen en kleine ondernemingen. Een mooi voorbeeld is De Factorij, een oude
hemdenfabriek uit 1921 op nr 136, waarin vandaag het
HOGER INSTITUUT VOOR GEZINSWETENSCHAPPEN
gehuisvest is. Gerard Alsteens en Nora Theys zijn de kunstenaars die het fresco bij de ingang ontwierpen, met aangepaste thema’s, zoals De stamboom, Het gezin, De tijd
die voorbijvliedt...

Dès 1903, le bourgmestre HUART HAMOIR prend l’initiative de tracer une large avenue au départ de la gare de
Schaerbeek. Un quartier résidentiel se développe rapidement. L’avenue Huart Hamoir, que vous remontez tout en
admirant les arbres remarquables (ginkgo biloba), offre
une belle alternance de maisons tantôt en briques tantôt
en pierres, à l’exemple du N°29 élevé par A. Laenen. Au 17ème
siècle, un château de plaisance s’élevait sur les plaines de
MONPLAISIR. Prisé ensuite comme rendez-vous de chasse,
le domaine accueillit une manufacture de porcelaines puis
au 19ème siècle la première blanchisserie mécanique du pays
pour faire place en 1906 à la création du quartier Monplaisir!
Dessinée en 1912, la maison construite par Léon Delune au
N°71 de l’avenue Huart Hamoir surprend le promeneur.
L’architecte y dessine un oriel triangulaire qui se prolonge
au-delà de la corniche. Quel surprenant édicule de couronnement percé de deux baies! A admirer aussi : le sgraffite
qui orne le second étage.

2 Take a few steps down AVENUE SLEECKX to discover another sgraffito attributed to Paul Cauchie at
N°103. Cross to the other side of the little public
garden square to enjoy the view of Église de la SainteFamille on one side and the station on the other.
3 A charming pergola crowns the corner building at
2 AVENUE MAETERLINCK. This Art Deco building
from 1937 currently houses the SASASA ART SCHOOL.
To the east, a mixed area of dwellings and small-scale
manufacturing has developed since the interwar
period. The old haberdashery at N°136, built in 1921,
is one example of this. Located in a perimeter block
courtyard, the factory was converted to house the
HOGER INSTITUUT VOOR GEZINSWETENSCHAPPEN
(Higher Institute for Family Sciences) today. The passage of time, the family tree, the couple… these are
among the subjects depicted in the fresco (Gérard Alsteens - Nora Theys) that brings the entrance to life in
remarkable style.
4 A short walk from ÉGLISE DE LA SAINTE-FAMILLE
(Colles, 1937), you will find Villa Regina at N°38,
marking the route to the old hamlet of Helmet. Red
bricks, a gable, ironwork and ceramic decorations
give historic style to the house, which borders the
little public garden square bearing the name of the
Belgian composer François Riga.
5 On the other side of the garden square, N°8 surprises
viewers with the monumental scale of the dome,
contrasting with the little steeple that it supports.
6 At N°12, the sgraffito designs decorating the residence, dating from 1923 (M. Delcuve), have surprisingly warm tones. Chestnut trees with white flowers
embellish the façade and surround a female profile
in the alcove before the entrance.
7 A few paces down AVENUE DEMOLDER and you
will be able to see the façade of N°152. A languid man
and woman flank the second-floor bay, but it’s the
lovely front door that draws your attention!
8 As the initial place of greeting, the door of a house
receives the most attention. This is especially apparent at 97 AVENUE EMILE VERHAEREN, where visitors cannot fail to be enchanted by the care taken in
the ironwork of the handle and the peephole. A peacock, symbol of beauty, dominates the transom of the
house, which bears the date 1911 and forms a

9 Le N°76 de L’AVENUE SLEECKX est un petit trésor
d’équilibre. Les sgraffites rappellent une réalisation de la
rue E. Laude (voir parcours 2), mentionnée dans le parcours du quartier de l’Hôtel communal. De part et d’autre
du petit balcon supporté par la logette en bois, l’artiste
Privat Livemont a peint, dans les tons verts, des profils
féminins dont la chevelure est joliment retenue par une
coiffe. En observant l’alignement des N°34 à 44, on ne se
doute pas qu’il est conçu par un même architecte. S’inspirant des styles classique, Renaissance ou Art Nouveau,
François Hemelsoet y exprime toute la palette de son
talent. De l’autre côté de la rue, les maisons portant les
N°73 et 71, autrefois jumelles, offrent quelques beaux
sgraffites signés Paul Cauchie. Voisine, une jolie mosaïque marque la baie en anse de panier du N°69. La descente de l’avenue Sleeckx offre à nouveau d’intéressants
alignements signés François Hemelsoet. Le N°80 laisse
admirer une élégante porte d’entrée accompagnée de son
décrottoir. Les N°90 et 92, rehaussés de sgraffites, ainsi
que les N°94 et 96 dont les façades sont animées de jolies
courbes Art Nouveau participent à cette harmonie. Cerise
sur le gâteau : le bel exemple classique du N° 82.
En 1911, l’architecte Hubert Rasquin construit sa maison
personnelle au N°31, toute en briques jaunes. Il interprète
le vocabulaire typique de l’Art Nouveau : auvent en pierre,
fronton courbe, consoles décoratives soutenant la corniche et grande variété des baies. L’ensemble est égayé
d’une riche polychromie propre aux oeuvres de Paul Cauchie. Avez-vous repéré le compas et l’équerre repris dans
l’imposte ? Allégorie de l’architecture qui marque la maison de l’architecte !
10 Le BOULEVARD LAMBERMONT fut terminé en 1914.
René Magritte y habita successivement au N°207 puis au
N°40. De belles maisons de maître aux N°88-86, 70 (F. Hemelsoet) et 68 témoignent d’une époque où la bourgeoisie de l’entre-deux-guerres souhaitait investir le long de
cette artère.

11 Quelle belle élévation François Hemelsoet a réussie au
N°9 de L’AVENUE A. GIRAUD! Ingéniosité des ouvertures,
joli duo de couleurs jaune pâle et vert d’eau, qui souligne
l’originalité des boiseries. A découvrir aussi les N°11, 13 et
15 du même architecte, plus sobres mais formant une enfilade harmonieuse. Une ambiance tranquille émane du
N°32 édifié par J. Coppieters en 1911. Blottie entre ses voisines, la maison doit son charme à ses boiseries vertes,
ses baies à petits bois et ses vitraux floraux. Au N°38 de
l’avenue Giraud, une élévation entièrement recouverte de
briques blanches vernissées fait chanter la lumière (P.
Collart, 1909). De fins bandeaux de briques vertes ainsi
que des sgraffites floraux lui donnent même un petit côté
champêtre! En 1912, l’artiste Paul Cauchie a rehaussé le
décor d’un sgraffite. L’ambiance campagnarde se poursuit
au N°51 par un décor en carrelages mettant en valeur la
polychromie d’un faisan.
Une incursion dans L’AVENUE E. VERHAEREN permet
d’admirer deux maisons de maître signées Léon Denis
aux N°18 et 20. L’une en pierre, l’autre en briques, elles
fascinent par leur imposant décor, sculpté en 1913. Un
papillon occupe le vitrail d’imposte du N°37 de l’avenue E.
Verhaeren tout à côté du carrefour formé par l’avenue A.
Giraud. Profitez d’un intéressant point de vue sur la tour
de l’Hôtel communal. L’atelier du talentueux affichiste
Privat Livemont se situait autrefois au N°93 de L’AVENUE
A. GIRAUD (J. Diongre).

12 En direction du square Huart Hamoir, la promenade se
clôture par un décor de feuilles de marronniers sculptées
dans la pierre animant les façades monumentales des
N°90 et 92 de L’AVENUE A. GIRAUD. Elles sont signées en
1914 par Joseph Diongre. Ce dernier imprime à la façade
voisine un motif de chardon qui foisonne au balcon et se
retrouve en ferronnerie sur le grillage du vantail. Fleur à
la symbolique multiple, le chardon incarnerait peut-être
la vertu protégée par ses piquants ? A méditer !

9 Het huis in de SLEECKXLAAN NR 76 is een schitterend
voorbeeld van harmonie. De sgraffiti herinneren aan een
huis in de Ernest Laudestraat, beschreven in de wandeling rondom het Gemeentehuis. Aan beide zijden van het
balkon schilderde Privat Livemont, in groene tinten, enkele vrouwenprofielen met een kapsel dat elegant in een
hoofddeksel gestoken is. Als je de huizenrij bekijkt van
NR 34 tot 44, kan je haast niet geloven dat ze allemaal
door dezelfde architect werden ontworpen, François Hemelsoet, die hier alle facetten van zijn kunstenaarstalent
wilde tonen. Hij vond zijn inspiratie zowel in het classicisme als in de Renaissance en de Art nouveau. De huizen
NR 73 en 71, aan de overzijde, waren eertijds een tweelingwoonst. Ze worden versierd met een mooi sgraffito
van Paul Cauchie. Het aanpalende huis NR 69 pronkt dan
weer met een mozaïek rondom het venster met een
korfboog. Gemeenteraadslid Jan Sleeckx combineerde op
succesvolle wijze een politieke en een literaire carrière.
Als je de laan afloopt die naar hem werd genoemd, zie je
enkele mooie gebouwen van architect François Hemelsoet. Zo kan je op NR 80 een elegante deur bewonderen,
compleet met schoenschraper. NRS 90 en 92 bezitten
mooie sgraffiti, net als NRS 94 en 96, waar ranke art nouveaulijnen zorgen voor een fijne harmonie. De klassieke
gevel op NR 82 is wel de kers op de taart.
In 1911 bouwde architect Hubert Rasquin zijn eigen
woning op NR 31, helemaal in gele baksteen. Hij ontleende
heel wat elementen aan de art nouveau, zoals de stenen
luifel, het gebogen fronton, de mooi versierde kraagbalken die de kroonlijst ondersteunen, en een groot aantal
verschillende vensteropeningen. Het geheel kreeg een
rijke polychromie helemaal in de stijl van Paul Cauchie.
Had je de passer en de meetlat opgemerkt in het bovenlicht? Een typische verwijzing naar de architectuur in dit
architectenhuis.

De LAMBERMONTLAAN werd pas aangelegd in 1914.
René Magritte woonde eerst op NR 207, dan op NR 40. De
mooie herenhuizen op NRS 88-86 en 70 (architect François Hemelsoet), zijn de getuigen van een tijdperk waarin
de gegoede burgerij zich nog thuis voelde langs deze nu
wel heel drukke brede weg.
11 De gevel van ALBERT GIRAUDLAAN NR 9 is een prachtige verwezenlijking van architect François Hemelsoet:
heel ingenieus aangebrachte vensteropeningen, een mooi
kleurenpalet met vooral een bleek geel en watergroen,
waardoor het unieke houtwerk beter tot zijn recht komt.
Dezelfde architect maakte de veeleer sobere huizenrij op
NR 11, 13 en 15, die toch voor een mooi effect zorgt. Het
huis NR 32, gebouwd in 1911 door J. Coppieters, straalt een
rustige charme uit. Het ligt een beetje verdrongen door
zijn grotere buren, maar valt toch op door het groen
geschilderde houtwerk, de vensters met kleine ruitjes en
de glasramen met bloemmotieven. Op de Giraudlaan
NR 38, gebouwd door P. Collart in 1909, geven de witgelakte bakstenen een heldere indruk. Fijne friezen in
groene baksteen en sgraffiti met bloemen verlenen het
huis een onverwacht plattelandssfeertje. Paul Cauchie
verleende in 1912 zijn medewerking aan het sgraffito. Die
rustieke atmosfeer vind je eveneens op NR 51 waar een
tegeltableau een rijkgekleurde fazant toont.
Na een korte wandeling in de EMILE VERHAERENLAAN
kan je twee woonhuizen bewonderen van architect Léon
Denis, het NR 18 in natuursteen en het nr 20 in baksteen.
Allebei fascineren ze door hun indrukwekkend decor,
gebeeldhouwd in 1913. Een vlinder versiert het glasraam
in het bovenlicht van NR 37, op de hoek van de Emile
Verhaeren- en de ALBERT GIRAUDLAAN. Van hieruit heb
je een interessant zicht op het monumentale Gemeentehuis van Schaarbeek. Het atelier van de bekende afficheen sgraffito-ontwerper Privat Livemont was gelegen in de
Albert Giraudlaan NR 93 (J. Diongre).
12 De wandeling eindigt in de richting van de Huart Hamoirlaan. Je passeert nog langs een decor van kastanjebladeren gesculpteerd in de stenen van de monumentale
gevels van de NR 90 en 92 in de ALBERT GIRAUDLAAN.
Die werden gebouwd in 1914 door Joseph Diongre, die ook
het aanpalende huis voorzag van een distelmotief dat het
balkon overwoekert en zelfs het ijzersmeedwerk aantast.
Tussen de vele mogelijke symbolische interpretaties van
de distel, kiezen we hier misschien die van de deugdzaamheid, beschermd door de puntige rand...
delightful row together with its neighbours. Don’t
miss the chestnut tree motifs that abound under the
cornice of N°83.
9 76 AVENUE SLEECKX is a gem of balance. The
sgraffito designs recall a creation on Rue E. Laude,
mentioned in the text for the walk around the town
hall. On either side of the little balcony, supported by
a wooden structure, the artist Privat Livemont
painted female profiles in green tones, with their hair
prettily tied back. When you see the row of N°34 to
44, there is no doubt that they are built by the same
architect. Inspired by the classical, Renaissance and
Art Nouveau styles, François Hemelsoet expresses
the full range of his talent here. On the other side of
the road, the houses at N°73 and 71, formerly twins,
bear some beautiful sgraffito designs by Paul
Cauchie. Next door, a lovely mosaic marks the basket
arch bay of N°69. Walking down Avenue Sleeckx offers some more unusual rows by François Hemelsoet.
At N°80, you can admire an elegant front door and
mud scraper. N°90 and 92, set off with sgraffito designs, and N°94 and 96 with their façades decorated
with attractive Art nouveau curves, play their part in
the harmonious effect. The icing on the cake is the
beautiful classical building at N°82. In 1911, the architect Hubert Rasquin built his own home at N°31,
all in yellow bricks. It is an interpretation of the typical Art nouveau vocabulary: stone canopy, curved
pediment, decorative consoles supporting the cornice
and a huge variety of bays. The whole ensemble is
brightened with a rich array of colours typical of Paul
Cauchie’s work. Did you spot the compass and set
square on the transom? An architectural allegory to
mark an architect’s house!
10 BOULEVARD LAMBERMONT was completed in
1914. René Magritte lived there, first at N°207 then at
N°40. Beautiful manor houses at N°88-86, 70 (F.
Hemelsoet) and 68 testify to a time when the interwar bourgeoisie was keen to invest all along this road.
11 François Hemelsoet completed a stunning building
at 9 AVENUE A. GIRAUD. Ingenious bays and an attractive pairing of pale yellow and “water green” underline the originality of the frames. N°11, 13 and 15
by the same architect are more sober but also form a
harmonious row. An atmosphere of tranquillity emanates from N°32, which was built by J. Coppieters in
1911. Nestled between its neighbours, the house owes
its charm to its green frames, bays with muntins and
floral stained glass windows. At 38 Avenue Giraud, a
building completely covered in white-painted bricks
is a symphony of light (P. Collart, 1909). Fine bands of
green bricks and floral sgraffito designs even give it
something of a rural aspect. In 1912, the artist Paul
Cauchie set off the decoration further with a sgraffito. The rural atmosphere continues at N°51 in a tiled
design showing the many colours of a pheasant.
A detour down AVENUE E. VERHAEREN gives you an
opportunity to admire two manor houses by Léon
Denis at N°18 and 20. One in stone and the other in
brick, their imposing decoration, sculpted in 1913, is
fascinating. A butterfly fills the transom stained
glass window of 37 Avenue E. Verhaeren, next to the
crossroads with Avenue A. Giraud. An unusual view
of the town hall tower can be seen here. The talented
poster designer Privat Livemont had his studio at 93
AVENUE A. GIRAUD (J. Diongre).
12 Heading towards Square Huart Hamoir, the walk
ends with a chestnut leaf design sculpted in stone on
the monumental façades of 90 and 92 AVENUE A.
GIRAUD, the work of Joseph Diongre in 1914. Diongre
also gave the neighbouring façade a thistle motif that
abounds over the balcony and is repeated in ironwork
on the casement railing. As a flower rich in symbolism, could the thistle represent virtue protected by
its prickles? It’s something to think about!
