PRESENTATION DU PROJET DE FAMILLE MARISTES
Le Projet de Famille Maristes est né du constat des situations de plus en
plus difficiles et du nombre croissant des enfants vivants dans la rue. Ceci
a été possible grâce à la volonté des maristes (pères, sœurs, laics) du
secteur de Sénégal, et du soutien du motard italien Fabrizio Meoni du
L ‘Associatione Solidarieta in Buone Mani .
Les maristes du Sénégal ont été provoqués par la réunion du conseil
Général 2005. Dans la déclaration politique générale, notre attention a été
attirée par les préoccupations de tous sur la jeunesse d’aujourd’hui. C’était
un nouvel appel à nos orientations pastorales et une demande de réponses
aux souhaits exprimés par les maristes pères et sœurs présents au Sénégal :
- créer entre maristes un espace de solidarités pour une action
Souligner nos options pastorales propre dans l’éducation des
jeunes, sur l’enfance en difficultés (enfant de la rue) et les familles
en difficultés ; éclatées, écartelées.
- Fortifier de plus en plus nos activités par une collaboration activée
avec les laïcs.

PRESENTATION OF THE MARIST FAMILY PROJECT
The Marist Family Project was created by the Marists of the Sector of
Senegal (Fathers, Sisters and Laity) in response to the alarming increase in
number of the street children found wandering around the city of Dakar,
Senegal. With the help of an Italian motorist, Fabrizio Méoni of the
L’Associatione, Solidarieta in Buone, Manie, the Marist Family Project
was established.
The Marists of the Senegal Sector, impelled by the Meeting of the General
Council of 2005, and further encouraged by the general political
declaration which highlighted the flight of young people today, chose to
renew its pastoral orientation focusing on the education of the youths,
hence our work with the youths in difficulties. All Marists in Senegal were
therefore invited to respond by:
- Creating a Project where all branches of the Marist Family in
Senegal could work together.
- Renewing its proper Pastoral Orientation option focusing on
Education for the young through activities for the youths facing
difficulty (e.g. street children), and the promotion of Women.
- Fostering a greater working collaboration with the laity in our
ministries.
- And encouraging common pastoral activities where possible.

LES ACTIVITES DU CENTRE (volet enfant de la rue)
Elles ont pour rôle de redonner un visage humaniste à ces jeunes qui vivent
dans la rue. Ainsi elles permettent de leur faire prendre conscience et de
comprendre leurs droits malgré les situations dans lesquelles ils vivent. Ces
activités se résument comme suit :
LES ACTIONS RUE
C’est l’ensemble des activités menées dans la rue pour le bien des enfants.
Il s’agit de faire des descentes pour tout d’abord entrer en contact avec les
jeunes dans leur point de chute loin des regards indiscrets, ensuite les
soigner et en fin les aider à réintégrer le tissu social qu’ils ont coupé pour
des raisons diverses. Certains d’entre eux ont fugué à cause des sévices
corporels
qu’ils
auraient
subis
dans
les
« daaras »(écoles
coraniques),d’autres pour des raisons qui tiennent à la recomposition de la
famille mais aussi à la pauvreté qui joue un rôle important dans cette
rupture familiale et sociale. Il faut signaler que certains jeunes quittent
pour des raisons psychologiques.
Nous sommes sur le terrain les Lundis pendant la nuit et les Mardis et les
Jeudis, le jour. Nous faisons les premiers soins qui consistent à mieux nous
approcher des enfants. Nous identifions les jeunes pour prendre leurs
filiations et leurs adresses pour faciliter le travail. Nous plaçons certains
jeunes dans le centre de SPER (solidarité pour les enfants de la rue) notre
partenaire pour les besoins de compléments d’informations de suivi et de
rééducation.

ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRE (Street Children)
These are the activities which demonstrate to the children in
difficulty our concern for them and the situation they live in. These
activities also allow them to take charge of their situation and realise
that they have the right to be treated as human beings, even though
they live on the streets. The activities we administer are as follows;
STREET ACTION”OR“GOING OUT ON THE BEAT”
There are activities we carry out on the streets to help children.
These activities are done without attracting too much public
attention in the quite corners where the children live in order to gain
their trust and confidence. With those activities, we are hopeful
always that we can eventually re-integrate them back into their
society.
The children run away from home for various reasons; some
children run away from the ‘daaras’ (coranic schools), because of the
corporal punishment they have to endure there. Others run away due
to marriage break ups of their parents. When children can’t adjust to
new family compositions, they choose to live on the streets. Others
leave home due to family poverty but others still leave home for
psychological reasons.
We go out on the Streets (Out on the Beat), on Monday nights,
Tuesdays and Thursdays during the day to visit the children where
they live in various corners of Dakar. While on the Streets, we offer
basic medical treatments and get to discuss with the children various
topics of interests. This street action also provides us with an
opportunity to collect where possible their contact addresses in order
to facilitate our work.
We also place children who want to return home at the Centre of
SPER (‘Solidarité pour les enfant de la rue’, or ‘Solidarity with the
Street Children’), an Organisation whom we work in partnership.
While the children are at the Centre, we do family mediation or reeducation in preparation for them returning home.
LES MERCREDIS DE NAZARETH
Ce sont les rendez-vous avec les jeunes dans le centre .Ils permettent tout
d’abord d’offrir à ces jeunes en rupture vivant dans la rue un cadre familial
et social ; ensuite de leur donner une occasion de prise de conscience à
travers un programme bien déterminé qui permet aux jeunes de rompre
avec la rue et ses conséquences. La journée est occupée ainsi :
-Service du petit déjeuner
-Toilettes et douche
-Lavage de linge
-Don de vêtements si possible
-Soins adéquats par un médecin
-Ecoute attentive et approfondie des jeunes
-Dessin libre selon les thèmes qui interpellent les jeunes
-Sensibilisations et échanges
-Accompagnement des jeunes ayant un projet de retour en famille
-Déjeuner
NB : Ces Mercredis de Nazareth sont préparés d’avance par l’équipe des
animateurs chaque Lundi.

WEDNESDAYS AT NAZARETH
On Wednesdays, we welcome the children from the streets in the
centre in Nazareth. This provides us with a chance to offer them an
experience of some form of family life and socialisation. This also
provides those children with a venue where they learn to interact
with the animators and other children. If they wish also, they get to
talk with the animators of their choice or consult the doctor. The
Wednesday programmes are well organised. The days’ activities are
organised as follows:
Serve breakfast as soon as the children arrive.
- Use shower and toilet facilities.
- Wash their clothes if wish to do so.
- Give clean clothes if possible.
- Visit the doctor if need to do so.
- Have more in depth discussions with the animators of choice.
- Watch films relating to a chosen topic of discussions.
- Creative designing.
- Information Sharing and awareness sessions plus discussions.
- Then Lunch is served.
N.B. The Wednesday programme is usually prepared in advance by
the animators each Monday.

LES MEDIATIONS FAMILIALES
FAMILY MEDIATION
Nous nous déplaçons vers la famille du jeune pour nous acquérir des
raisons de fugue de ce dernier. Le but de cette activité est de permettre au
jeune de pouvoir reprendre place dans sa famille. L’équipe engage alors un
processus de rétablissement de la communication entre le jeune et sa
famille. Cette médiation réussie nous permet d’effectuer le retour du jeune
en famille, son placement à l’école ou dans un centre de formation
professionnelle. En fin l’équipe assure un suivi sur l’évolution du cas de ce
jeune selon un calendrier bien défini. Il faut noter que ces médiations se
font aussi à Dakar qu’à l’intérieur du pays
When a young person wants to return to his family, we go to visit the
family and do mediation. We try to establish why the youth left
home the last time and see whether his story (what he told us),
matches that of his family. Our responsibility is to prepare both sides
(family and the youth) for the return of the youth when he is ready.
We try to re-establish the communication between the youths and
their families. When the mediation is successful and the youth is
returned home, if possible with the family we try to find a placement
for the youth in a school or a centre where he can receive some
professional training. Our work doesn’t end there but we programme
follow up visits or telephone calls to make sure the youth stays at
home with the family. We also leave our contact numbers with both
the youth and his family in case they want to contact us at some
stages. Thus Family Mediation is conducted both within the city of
Dakar and in the outer Regions of Senegal.

LE SUIVI MEDICAL
OUR MEDICAL COMPONENT
Nous avons un volet de suivi médico-psychologique auprès des
jeunes en rupture que nous rencontrons dans la rue pendant les jours
d’action rue. Ce suivi est assuré par un médecin psychologue qui
intervient une fois par semaine.
LES ACTIVITES DE SOCIALISATION
We have a medical component to our Centre which deals with
medical problems of our children. This section is taken care of by a
Psychiatrist who does psychological follow ups on our youths on the
streets. The doctor is available for consultation once a week and also
for emergencies, he is there when called upon. His consultation is
vital for our Centre.
Elles sont une combinaison du jeu de groupes ayant un caractère
pédagogique à l’endroit des jeunes pour créer un lien de confiance et
de renforcer la dynamique du groupe. Ces activités sont les
suivantes : Sortie au bord de la plage, Matchs de football ; Noël
pour tous.

Les vendredis, l’équipe se retrouve pour évaluer les activités de la
semaine et établi un nouveau programme.
SOCIALISATION ACTIVITIES
We do have recreational activities for the youths we deal with on the
streets. These are the activities which help build confidence and
reinforce group dynamics in our work. We organise activities such
as; a fun day on the beach with lots of games. We have soccer
matches organised between the youths and our animators and each
Christmas, there is a Christmas party for everybody.
Every Fridays, the group meets together to evaluate the activities of
the week and prepare a new Programme for the week following.
LA PROMOTION FEMININE
De nos jours, beaucoup de jeunes filles sont confrontées à la non
scolarisations ou à l’abandon de l’école liés à la pauvreté et à la
négligence des parents. Le volet promotion féminine a pour objectif
de valoriser la femme dans la société. Il permet aux jeunes filles de
prendre conscience de leur valeur et de leurs capacités. Ainsi l’on ne
cesse de se donner pour la bonne cause de ces dernières avec le
soutien de bienfaiteurs tels que le Comité de Charité du Dakar
Women’s Group (DWG).
THE PROMOTION OF WOMEN
Many young women today find themselves illiterate having had to
abandon School due to poverty and the negligence of their parents.
The Centre for the Promotion of Women has the objective of
empowering women to realise their self worth and encouraging them
to believe in their abilities to achieve something.
Because of the work the Centre does for these women, charitable
Organisations come to our assistance, like recently we received
some assistance from the ‘Comitè de Charitè du Dakar Women’s
Group (DWG), of whom we are most grateful.

LES ACTIVITES
Il s’agit de donner aux jeunes filles une formation qui les permettrait
de prendre en charge leur avenir et de pouvoir subvenir
à leurs besoins .Elles pourront s’occuper de leur foyer et seront in
dépendantes financièrement par rapport à leur maris.
Cette formation consiste à l’apprentissage à la teinture, à la broderie,
au crochet et à la couture. Dans le souci de former de bonnes
femmes, nous avons juger utile de donner des cours culinaires .Elles
apprennent comment faire les gâteaux, les merveilles (sucrées et
salées) .Des séances de sensibilisations sur différents thèmes qui les
touchent ont été faites, par le thème « SIDA et grossesses
précoces ». Des expositions d’ouvres réalisées sont organisées.
L’équipe vous remercie pour vos prières et vos soutiens. Cependant
elle souhaite l’appui des bonnes volontés qui contribuerait à
l’épanouissement des enfants et à leur réinsertion dans le tissu social
et de la promotion féminine par votre apport en toute nature.

THE ACTIVITIES
The activities offered at the Centre provide formation for the young
women as a preparation for the future. They would be skilled enough
to lead good lives as adult women. That is to say that they will be
able to manage their own homes or their little business affairs and be
able to help their husbands financially.
The formations we offer at the Centre are as follows; screen
printing, embroidery, knitting and sewing. We also give the young
women cooking lessons as a good preparation for the future. They
learn how to bake cakes, biscuits (sweets and salted). Women are
also given health awareness classes on issues which touch their lives.
For example, we have had inputs on the subject of “SIDA and
pregnancy prevention.” We have organised the exposition of our
work also and that has been a success for us.
