Message from the Chair of the Board
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS)

to make sure life wins. Volunteers, donors
and employees all contributed in their own
way to the growth of the Quebec Division’s
revenues – which reached $30 million – a
milestone in the organization’s development.
More than one in three people will develop
some form of cancer in his or her lifetime.
We face considerable challenges and we
need to make choices that will allow us to
stand out in an increasingly competitive
environment. To achieve this, the National
Board of Directors has adopted a five-year
strategic plan (2010-2015) that leverages
our history and reputation, as well as the
strength of our programs, policies and
investments in research to advance the
fight against cancer.
This major undertaking was carried out
alongside the Quebec Division which
developed its own strategic plan aligned
with the national plan. Our plan will

Tribute to Pierre-Alain Rodrigue,
Chair
I would like to extend my deepest thanks
to Pierre-Alain Rodrigue, who this year is
completing his mandate as Chair of the
Board of the Quebec Division.
Involved in the CCS for the past 12 years,
Pierre-Alain chose to give his all to combat
cancer. He was a long-time active member
of the Performance Assurance Committee,
becoming the committee’s Chair in 2005.
incidence of cancer, decrease the mortality
rate and enhance the quality for life of
people living with cancer, both during
and following a cancer experience.
In 2010-2011, we were your greatest ally in
the fight against all cancers as we pursued
our efforts in our five fields of action:
research, information, support, prevention
and advocacy. Indeed, research remains our
priority in 2010-2011, with $7.5 million
invested in Quebec to support 58 projects,
$6.6 million of which was contributed
by the Quebec Division. As the largest
national charitable funder of cancer
research in the country, we firmly believe
that research is our best weapon for improving treatments and preventing the disease.
Since smoking is responsible for approximately 30% of all cancers and 85% of lung
cancers, in 2010-2011 the Quebec Division
orchestrated the largest citizen mobilization
campaign in the history of the CCS nationwide. The letter campaign undertaken as
part of the Fight Back section of most
Relay For Life events gave the CCS an
Under his stewardship, the organization
remained active and vigilant, while maintaining its high standards of governance.
Appointed Chair of the Board in 2009,
Pierre-Alain succeeded in mobilizing
his troops in a time of economic crisis,
determined to always do more so as to
familiarize the public with the CCS and
the services the organization offers to those
living with cancer.
His mandate spanned two strategic plans
that allowed him to demonstrate his
intense passion for the cause. His determination prompted him to become even more
deeply involved in the fight against cancer,
particularly Canada-wide.
Indeed, our Chair is very committed at
the national level. For the past three years
he has sat on the CCS National Board of
Directors, as well as the National Council
whose representatives include the Chair of
each division. He is also the Chair of the
Finance, Audit and Risk Management
Committee.
When he became Chair of the Board,
Pierre-Alain’s goal was to improve our
fundraising performance. Two years later,
we are pleased to declare “mission

opportunity to be seen and heard. A total
of 22,300 Quebecers signed letters asking
the Minister of Health to implement a market freeze on tobacco products, take local
measures to combat the sale of contraband
tobacco and introduce a ban on smoking
in vehicles carrying children under the
age of 16.
As this exciting mandate draws to a close,
I wish to thank our dedicated staff and our
27,000 enthusiastic volunteers. My sincere
thanks go out to all our donors and partners who have enabled us to continue to do
more. I would also like to express my gratitude to the members of the Board of
Directors and to the Executive Director,
Suzanne Dubois, for their integrity and
perseverance in our fight for life.
Pierre-Alain Rodrigue
Chair of the Board
With his dynamic personality,
he infused the CCS with an amazing
energy and a strong desire to gain ground
so that, one day, no one will fear cancer.
Thank you, Pierre-Alain, for your loyalty to
the cause and your steadfast commitment.
We will continue on the path that you helped
us map out.

The backbone in the fight
against cancer
Cancer research requires a great deal of time,
money and energy. It’s a vast field that covers
all types of cancer, a term that encompasses
more than 200 different diseases. To defeat
cancer, we must understand how it works,
how it behaves and how to provide the most
appropriate treatment. Research is at the root
of this understanding, which is why the
Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has made
research its number one priority in Quebec.
Thanks to funding from the CCS, each year,
hundreds of men and women working in a
dozen or so research centres in the province
are gaining ground on the disease.
In 2010-2011, the CCS invested $7.5 million
in research in Quebec, of which $6.6 million
was contributed by the Quebec Division.
In all, 58 of the most promising research
projects received funding over the course
of the past year – some for the first time,
some through renewal grants – thus enabling
researchers to make further progress in their
work involving all cancer types.
Even with the dedication of these researchers and the sums invested, research is still
desperately underfunded. In fact, a lack
of resources meant that the CCS was able
to fund a mere 17% of eligible research projects. Nevertheless, thanks to our generous
donors, the CCS remains the largest
national charitable funder of research in
Quebec and Canada. The organization’s
contributions accounted for close to 55%
of all non-government funding and 10.7%
of overall investments.1
To save more lives
Dr. Gerardo Ferbeyre, a researcher at the
Université de Montréal, has discovered a
natural defence mechanism that the body
uses to fight cancer. This mechanism
comes into play when benign tumours
start forming. In pursuing his research,
Dr. Ferbeyre hopes to shed light on why
some cells bypass this defence system
and become cancerous.
“Receiving a Canadian Cancer Society
grant is very special indeed and donors
need to know that their contribution makes
a difference. With a grant from a charitable
organization like the CCS, there is a closer
relationship between the source of the
funding and what is done with it. People
who donate to the CCS are doing more
for research. They aren’t content with
helping to finance government subsidies
through the taxes they pay; they become
directly involved.”
Journey into the heart of research
At the CCS volunteers’ conference in
November 2010, close to 250 participants
were invited on a journey into the world
of research and scientific investigation.
During the two-day event, volunteers met
with numerous leading researchers from
Quebec and around the world. Through a
program that addressed research funding,
grant mechanisms and the latest breakthroughs, participants gained a better
understanding of the issues at stake in
the fight against cancer.

Being present
Any bad news can be tough to absorb.
Imagine when it’s a cancer diagnosis.
Whether it’s you or a loved one who has
developed the illness, you will want to look
for someone to turn to, to talk it out, to
speak with someone who has gone through
a similar experience and also obtain helpful
information. To meet these needs, in
2003 the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS)
created Cancer J’écoute.
Cancer J’écoute is a psychosocial support
service made up of counsellors, professionals and volunteers trained to help, listen
and provide practical tools for dealing with
cancer. The Cancer J’écoute team is made
up of eight employees, 196 volunteers and
50 professionals ready to help people living
with cancer.
Customized individual support
In 2010-2011, Cancer J’écoute handled
469 requests for immediate assistance or
practical information. A total of 837
matches were made this year. Of these,
636 were new matches. These activities
resulted in more than 12,000 support calls.
Telephone matching professionals – psychologists, sexologists and others – are recognized experts in their respective
fields. They were involved in 130 matches
for a total of 239 support calls throughout
the year. Five predominant themes emerged
during these professional interventions:
sharing a parent’s diagnosis with a child,
anxiety, sexuality, self-image and relationships with health professionals.
New services
The CCS’s psychosocial support team is
constantly striving to augment the range
of services it offers to better meet clients’
growing needs. To this end, a number of
new services were launched in 2010:

Regional support services
In cooperation with the 14 regional offices,
Cancer J’écoute also offers people affected
by cancer access to group support. In
Quebec, 37 expressive art groups and
17 visualization groups were launched in
27 cities, which are led by professionals
with assistance from volunteers. On average, 94% of group participants say that
the workshops help them cope with their
cancer experience. The monthly support
groups, for their part, welcomed more
than 700 participants across Quebec.

Cutting-edge support
In an effort to offer the most up-to-date
training in the field of support, in 2010
the Cancer J’écoute team gave 43 days of
training in support and group facilitation
to employees, volunteers and health professionals in six regions. Speakers delivered
17 lectures to more than 450 people (professionals and the general public) in eight
regions. Cancer J’écoute organized more
than 24 conferences on topics ranging
from sexuality to humour as well as
17 training sessions.

can be avoided
Prevention in action
We now know that one in two cases of
cancer could be avoided through the adoption of healthy lifestyles and public health
policies. For this reason, the Canadian
Cancer Society (CCS) constantly strives
to put forward actions and programs aimed
at promoting cancer prevention, notably
through anti-smoking initiatives and by
encouraging screening, advocating for
reduced exposure to UV rays and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Hop on the Trottibus
Walking School Bus
In the spring and fall of 2010, Little
walkers and Walkers could be seen walking
to certain schools. These pupils, and the
volunteers who accompany them to their
schools, were testing the Trottibus
Walking School Bus initiative.
Developed by the CCS with funding provided by Québec en forme, the Trottibus
Walking School Bus promotes physical
activity among children and reintroduces
participants to the joys of walking. Project
partners include the Carrefour action
municipale et famille, the Fédération
des éducateurs et éducatrices physiques
enseignants du Québec, the Réseau du sport
étudiant du Québec and Kino-Québec.
Nine schools took part in the project,
with a total of 216 Little walkers.
Spread the word with Thingamaboob
Mother’s Day is a big deal at the CCS. On
May 2010, 28,835 Thingamaboobs were sold
by Jean Coutu pharmacies (PJC) – that’s
10,000 more than the previous year.
In October, a virtual version of this
educational tool, which illustrates the
effectiveness of mammograms, was also
sent to 38,000 women aged of 50 to 69.
Beneath the sun
In 2010, the CCS’s Sun Squads (Escouades
Ô Soleil) reached 38,000 young kids in day
camps and at public events thanks to a program set up by the 14 regional offices. The
goal of these squads is to reduce children’s
exposure to UV rays, thereby reducing
their risk of developing skin cancer.
In my lunchbox
As part of Relay For Life, the CCS launched
the “Lunch for Life” activity to encourage
participants to make healthy lunchbox
choices by following the organization’s
nutrition guidelines.
Quit smoking
As part of the Plan québécois d’abandon du
tabagisme, the Ligne j’Arrête – a joint initiative between the CCS and the Quebec
Council on Tobacco & Health – is a helpline offering smokers personalized support,
information and resources to those looking
to butt out or those who have kicked the
habit and want to avoid a relapse. Smoking
cessation agents can be contacted by phone,
e-mail or chat. Funded by the Ministère de
la Santé et des Services sociaux, the helpline
fielded 18,736 requests in 2010. The helpline also teamed up with various health
partners to follow up with the 2,918
support requests made by patients who had
been discharged from hospital.
Introduced in 2010, the Short Messages
Against Tobacco (SMAT) service was created by the CCS for young smokers aged
18 to 24 who wish to quit smoking. The
messages were adapted especially for young
adults. Close to 200 young people in the
Quebec City region took part in the pilot
project by signing up at smat.ca.
Challenges… growing in popularity
From March 1 to April 11, 2010, the
5/30 Health and Wellness Challenge
invited Quebecers as young as four years
old to eat better and move more. As a
Challenge partner, the CCS contributed
75,000 shopping lists with recipes which
were distributed in kits given to all those
willing to take on the Challenge. To recruit
participants, more than 50 kiosks manned
by CCS volunteers were set up in IGA
stores. In all, 42 municipalities were actively involved in the Challenge, and
14,094 families and 3,609 teams registered
for the event, for a total of 124,200 people.
In its 11th year, the Quit To Win!
Challenge, an ACTI-MENU initiative,
was a smashing success. In 2010, a total of
15,804 people registered during the annual
campaign, which encourages smokers to
kick the habit for a minimum of six weeks.
Participants were given the opportunity to
request a follow-up call from an agent from
the Ligne j’Arrête; 2,356 people took advantage of this support.

Taking a stand
The 2010-2011 year was a busy one for the
Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in terms
of advocacy activities. Whether it involves
conducting public relations initiatives,
lobbying elected officials or mobilizing
citizens, advocacy works towards the implementation of legislation and government
programs that promote a healthy and active
lifestyle. Not only does the CCS benefit
from an ever-expanding network of volunteers, but it also deploys ongoing efforts to
mobilize elected officials in the fight against
cancer, to position the organization as a
leader in numerous key areas, and to
increase its visibility in the Quebec media.
22,300 letters sent to the government
A massive letter-signing campaign to
advance the anti-smoking issue was conducted as part of the 2010 Relay For Life
Fight Back section. The goal of the campaign was to encourage Yves Bolduc,
Minister of Health and Social Services,
to give the Tobacco Act more clout and
thus better protect our youth. The letter
contained three key requests: a market
freeze on tobacco products, local measures
to combat the sale of contraband tobacco,
and a ban on smoking in vehicles carrying
children under the age of 16.
The CCS’s 14 regional offices as well as a
total of 57 Relay For Life groups agreed to
participate in the campaign in the field.
The CCS met with 48 MNAs in their
respective regions to present them with
boxes of letters bearing the organization’s
logo. The MNAs in turn delivered the
22,300 letters to the Quebec government.
The letter campaign enjoyed strong media
visibility, with more than 60 articles about
the campaign appearing in various weekly
publications and online.
Keeping the momentum going
The successful letter campaign allowed the
CCS to pursue its tobacco control efforts.
On November 2, during a press conference
attended by numerous media representatives, the CCS called on the Charest
government to take action. The goal of
this event was to reveal the results of what
turned out to be the largest citizen mobilization campaign conducted by the CCS
nationwide and to make the tobacco issue
a priority for the Ministère de la Santé et des
Services sociaux. A number of public health
figures were on hand to support the CCS’s
initiative and to demand a substantive
review of the Tobacco Act. This was a shining opportunity for the CSS to position
itself as an important media stakeholder.
Indoor tanning comes under fire
Skin cancer is the most common type
of cancer. It is also the most preventable,
which is why the CCS took part throughout
the year in Operation Say It Loud!, an
innovative youth-driven project to promote
assertiveness, commitment and involvement. The goal of Operation Say It Loud!
is to educate French- and English-speaking
students 14 to 18 years of age, from four
Montreal school boards, on health issues
over which they have some control. This
initiative encourages them to pursue advocacy activities and effect change. The CCS
was asked to develop a workshop on the
dangers of indoor tanning that was attended
by the students from 23 schools.
Starting the conversation
Mobilizing sympathizers is good; keeping
them interested and committed to the
cancer cause is better. This is why so many
efforts have been made to maintain relationships with the CCS’s advocacy supporters.
A Facebook group was launched for people
interested in receiving calls to action and
prepared to unite Quebecers around cancerrelated issues and to press our elected
officials to take action. E-blasts were also
sent to sympathizers to the cause to maintain their interest in the fight against cancer.

Information specialists who listen
Cancer is a word we all know, but do we
really understand that this disease can take
many forms? Information sources abound,
but their credibility varies greatly. By
offering the public an extensive array of
resources to ensure that everyone has access
to reliable and credible information, the
Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has established itself as a go-to reference for all
cancer-related matters.
Available to everyone
The Cancer Information Service (CIS)
comprises four information centres spread
throughout Canada. The Montreal Centre
is the CCS’s only French-language centre,
handling requests from Francophones
across the country.
In 2010-2011, the Montreal Centre fielded
16,268 information requests, including
2,114 via email. The Centre also offers follow-up calls. People seeking information
about cancer, in one way or another, fall
into a variety of categories. For the most
part, requests come from people with cancer, their loved ones (family and friends)
and health professionals.
With the development of new technologies,
the CIS now has more than one platform
for delivering its services, thanks in great
part to the growing popularity of social
media. Furthermore, the cancer.ca
site provides Web users with a wealth of
information. From February 1, 2010 to
January 31, 2011, there were 344,503 visits
to the site (all sections combined), an
increase of 11.1% over the previous year.
In all, the site received 1,372,972 page hits.
A well-stocked library
In addition to offering rapid access to
people qualified to answer any cancerrelated question, the Cancer Information
Service distributes some 50 free publications in several languages. The CIS
provides users with clear, accurate
information that’s been validated by cancer
specialists on numerous topics, such as
nutrition, a specific cancer, prevention
and smoking cessation.
Two new brochures were published last
year, bolstering the CCS’s already wellstocked library: Living with Advanced
Cancer and Preventing Cancer.
Over the years, the CIS has also developed
the Canadian Cancer Encyclopedia™, a vast
directory offering comprehensive data on
cancer. Risk reduction, screening, diagnosis, treatment and supportive care for
many forms of cancer are just a few of the
topics covered in the Canadian Cancer
Encyclopedia™. The Encyclopedia includes
more than 60 chapters, 41 of which are
accessible online. The content is regularly
reviewed and updated by oncology experts.
Promoting our services
In 2010, the CCS produced a two-part
promotional video: one section featured
the Cancer Information Service, the other,
Cancer J’écoute. The video uses testimonials as well as interviews with volunteers,
service users and health professionals to
present the CCS’s information and psychosocial support services. Patients explain
how the CCS has helped and supported
them throughout their cancer experience.
The video is available at cancer.ca.

Material
and
financial assistance
For
life.
Focusing one’s energy where it counts
When someone receives a cancer diagnosis,
they need to focus all their energy on combating the disease. Unfortunately, cancer
impacts our lives in every way: physically,
financially, psychologically and materially.
In 2010-2011, the Canadian Cancer Society
(CCS) maintained and expanded its range
of services by providing essential material
and financial resources to people in need.
At an office near you
The CCS’s Quebec Division enjoys a pre
sence throughout the province, thanks to
its 14 regional offices. To ensure its services
are even more accessible, the CCS has also
set up service centres where anyone can
meet with volunteers who serve as the
organization’s ambassadors. In 2010, three
new centres (Chibougamau, Lac-Mégantic
and Notre-Dame-des-Prairies) joined
our existing establishments, for a total of
16 centres. More than 100 volunteers working in 16 remote municipalities provide
CCS s ervices: loans of wigs and scarves,
material assistance, and free literature.
Customized tools
To effectively satisfy the needs of people
with cancer and their loved ones, the CCS
is constantly developing promotional and
informative tools. A customizable information pamphlet was produced to present
each region’s activities. Throughout the
year, a CCS reusable bag containing reading material and handy items was given to
people staying at the Jacques-Cantin Lodge
and to anyone with cancer who went to a
CCS service centre.
Material assistance
Living with cancer brings with it a wide
range of new experiences. Some find themselves facing a different reality, such as
having to wear a wig or breast prosthesis.
To address this situation, the CCS, in partnership with Hanes Canada, distributes
thousands of temporary breast prostheses
free of charge to mastectomy patients
awaiting a permanent prosthesis.
The CCS has also partnered with Pantene
Pro-V to develop the “Beautiful Lengths”
program, which loans natural hair wigs to
women requesting them. Furthermore, the
CCS has invested close to $100,000 in
new wigs and related products (turbans,
hairbrushes, shampoos and conditioners,
hairnets, wig stands), which are available
at its regional offices and service centres.
The CCS also ships health care items (bandages, compresses, syringes, etc.) to anyone
in need. In 2010, a total of 6,100 parcels
were mailed throughout Quebec to people
living with the disease. And such items are
in great demand: in 2010-2011, the CCS
processed 976 new requests, a 7% increase
over 2009-2010, for a total cost of $326,300.
Financial assistance:
more people helped
Over and above material assistance, the
CCS also offers financial resources. People
who meet certain criteria may receive financial assistance for transportation to and
from treatment centres (radiation, chemotherapy or surgery), or an allocation for the
purchase of needed equipment. In 2010,
the CCS’s Financial Assistance Program
processed 4,423 applications, or roughly
26% more than last year, for a total amount
of $1,093,179.
An oasis
For the past 20 years, the Jacques-Cantin
Lodge has been part of the CCS landscape.
This year, 648 people with cancer and 202
companions stayed at this oasis of peace.
Inaugurated in 1990, the Jacques-Cantin
Lodge is available to self-sufficient
Quebecers from outside the city who must
travel to Montreal to receive their cancer
treatment at one of the city’s hospitals.
Located in welcoming surroundings, the
Lodge offers numerous services, tasty
meals, an attentive staff and a transportation service, all in a calm, friendly setting
and at modest rates.

Activities that make a difference
To offer more services, fund more research
projects and help more people living with
cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS)
needs to expand and step up its fundraising
activities. As a national charitable organization, the CCS relies mainly on the generosity
of donors for its funding. Year after year, our
donors demonstrate their commitment to the
fight against cancer, with the result that in
2010-2011, the Quebec Division generated
revenues of $30 million.
The Relay For Life
Celebrating people living with cancer,
paying tribute to those who lost their battle, fighting the leading cause of death in
Quebec and Canada – these are the goals of
the Relay For Life. Since 2001, the number
of Relay For Life events held each year has
grown steadily, with echoes felt in every
region of Quebec. In 2010, the Relay For Life
raised $12.9 million, an increase of $1.5 million over the previous year, which also saw a
4.6% rise in the number of participants.
As a fundraising event, the Relay For Life
has the greatest impact in the fight against
all forms of cancer. In 2010, the activity
was responsible for 42.9% of the Quebec
Division’s revenues. Each year, the Relay
organizers gather at the Relay Summit to
highlight their achievements and share best
practices in an effort make participants’
experience of this signature event even
more rewarding.
Daffodil Days
Created in 1961, Daffodil Days have
become synonymous with spring. From
March 25 to 28, 2010, these pretty blooms
helped us raise $2.3 million. More than
12,000 volunteers working at nearly 2,600
points of sale went all out to encourage the
public to brighten their day with a bit of
yellow and thus contribute to the fight
against cancer in a beautiful fashion.
The Daffodil Ball
Aladdin, the “One Thousand and One
Nights” and 600 guests were on hand for
the 17th Daffodil Ball, which took place
on April 22. Attended by Canada’s business
elite, this annual event is a distinctive,
glamorous and elegant evening that enjoys
a reputation in international philanthropic
circles for its excellent organization.
Indeed, the Daffodil Ball is Canada’s most
prestigious gala to benefit the fight against
cancer. In recent years, the Ball won the
Special Events Magazine Gala Award in
the category of best fundraising event five
times. The 2010 edition of the Daffodil
Ball raised $2.2 million.
Donations to suit every style of giving
enable it to do more to combat all forms
of the disease. People wishing to join the
CCS’s fight for life, either by giving their
time or money, can choose from a variety
of options to suit them: an In Memoriam
donation, planned giving, a monthly donation, the door-to-door canvassing, an In
Your Honour donation, a direct mail donation, etc. In 2010, the CCS collected $7.8
million thanks to the generosity of donors,
establishing the organization as the leader
in the fight against cancer.
Rallying events
Many other activities are held to raise additional funds for the fight against cancer. The
opportunities for giving are as numerous as
they are lively and entertaining with events
like the Paws for Hope walk-a-thon involving man’s best friend, gourmet gatherings
featuring fabulous food, the Volleyball
Challenge and Cops for Cancer. In 2010,
these initiatives raised $2.1 million.
The CCS is the leading organization in the
fight against cancer, offering services that

Strength in numbers
In 2010-2011, nearly 27,000 volunteers and
200 employees pursued the fight against
cancer at the Canadian Cancer Society
(CCS). Whether lending a hand at events,
raising funds or providing services to people
with cancer, these men and women give of
themselves each day to improve the quality
of life of those living with the disease.
The CCS is an ideal choice for anyone
wishing to join in the fight against cancer.
In fact, this year, close to 2,000 people
joined the ranks of the organization to
become volunteers. The CCS also provided
its volunteers with training geared to the
specific activity or services they wished to
engage in.
Empowered volunteers
In September, a new volunteer recognition
program was created to develop, promote
and maintain a culture of appreciation and
draw attention to the contributions of the
volunteers behind CCS’s actions. The
Pinnacle Prize, which pays tribute to the
most dedicated volunteers, was created for
the occasion. Fifteen prizes were awarded
in the Mission and Fundraising categories
during the 2010 volunteers’ conference.
Throughout the last year, numerous CCS
volunteers stood out. Not surprisingly,
on April 21 the CCS received the
Hommage bénévolat-Québec Award in the
Organization category for the Relay For
Life. This distinction, awarded by the
Government of Quebec, highlights and
rewards the CCS for placing an emphasis
on recruiting and coaching its volunteers,
and for promoting, advancing and raising
the profile of volunteerism.
Six volunteers from Quebec also received a
Citation of Merit under the CCS’s National
Recognition Program.

Pillars of inspiration
A CCS volunteer for the past five years,
Frédéric Champagne took up the cancer
cause at the age of 13, when he had just lost
his father to the disease. He has served as
the spokesperson for the Relay For Life in
Trois-Rivières on two occasions. Frédéric
received the Claude-Masson Award in the
“Young Volunteer” category at the Quebec
government’s Hommage bénévolat-Québec
awards. “Promoting the CCS is something
I care about deeply. With a cause like this,
it’s impossible to remain indifferent.”
Cancer survivor Édith Lavergne, a CCS
volunteer since 1997, received the 2010
Medal of Courage. This award, given by
the CCS’s National Office, spotlights the
rare and exceptional courage displayed by
an individual in his or her personal battle
with cancer. Édith, who passed away in
March 2011, was very involved in the CCS.
The organization wishes to honour her
courage and determination.

Front and centre
The fight against cancer involves countless
players, and getting noticed in today’s
media can be a challenge. This is why it
is so important for the Canadian Cancer
Society (CCS) to distinguish itself and
demonstrate what makes it the leading
organization in this battle.
Over the past year, numerous communication initiatives directed the CCS to centre
stage with the objective to increase public
awareness of our services, maximize the
CCS’s visibility, ensure a strong presence in
targeted media and create a positive image
as a leading organization recognized by the
public for its impact on all forms of cancer.
The people behind the scenes
A promotional video was produced to better acquaint the public with the CCS, its
actions and its services. Featuring testimonials from volunteers, employees and
researchers dedicated to the cause, this tool
is also aimed at rallying volunteers around
the organization’s mission. The video met
with much enthusiasm at the 2010 volunteers’ conference in November and is
available on Facebook/sccquebec.
Social media play their part
In 2009-2010, the CCS made its social
media debut; this year the organization
stepped things up. Through a targeted
strategy, we were able to start a dialogue
with the public on various platforms,
including Facebook, Twitter and cancer.ca.
As of January 31, 2011, the Quebec
Division boasted 5,103 fans on its
Facebook page and 841 Twitter followers.
The CCS wants to make the most of this
heightened presence to engage in a conversation with its sympathizers and strengthen
their sense of belonging. As such, the CCS
is establishing itself as a fresh and dynamic
organization in tune with the population.
Getting out and about
In 2010, the CCS put together a squad to
promote its services and represent it at trade
shows and exhibitions. Throughout the
year, this team of communication professionals was given the tasks of creating a
positive impression on the public,
recruiting volunteers and raising the
CCS profile at these events.
Increased media presence
In terms of media coverage, 2010 turned
out to be a great year for the CCS’s Quebec
Division. The organization was mentioned
1,623 times in print media, broadcast
media and on the Web. The CCS clearly
stood out as the go-to organization for
information about cancer, with 240 mentions on television, 540 on the Internet,
543 in newspapers and magazines, and
300 on the radio and in social media.
Highly active, the CCS needs to increase
the positive impact of its actions and familiarize the public with its achievements. The
goal is maximum visibility with minimum
investment! The organization’s different
campaigns have reached a broad audience
thanks to an ongoing presence in all forms
of media.
The CCS also produces its own publications, which it distributes to the general
public and to specific groups. In 2010, it
published Interaction, a French-language
magazine for CCS volunteers and employees;
Difference, a recognition magazine for
donors; and Priority Research a popular
science magazine written for the organization’s volunteers, employees and donors
that is also designed to strengthen ties
with Quebec’s scientific community.

Greater impact in the fight against all forms of cancer
Statement of Revenue and Expenses
For the year ended January 31, 2011
(in thousands of dollars)
Operation, Stability
and Initiative Fund
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) benefited from a significant increase in revenues
for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. These remarkable results allowed the organization to
invest even more in its mission. Having
weathered the economic crisis relatively
well, the CCS is now looking to the future
with renewed optimism and the same goal
it has always pursued: the eradication of
cancer and the enhancement of the quality
of life of people living with cancer.
Over the past few months, the Performance
Assurance Committee, which is guided by
principles of rigour and transparency,
focused on the sound management of the
CCS’s assets. To offer more support and
services to people living with cancer and
their loved ones, each dollar must be
invested wisely. We are pleased to
announce that, thanks to the excellent
work of our teams of employees and
volunteers, we were able to raise a recordbreaking amount.
It therefore gives me great pleasure to present
the highlights of the 2010-2011 year.
The $30 million threshold
has been crossed
In 2010-2011, the Quebec Division
collected $30 million, an increase of
$2.4 million, or 8.5%, over the previous
fiscal year. The last five years have seen
steady revenue growth thanks to the
development of different projects, particularly the Relay For Life. In 2010, the Relay
For Life was held in 77 municipalities and
raised $12.9 million, a 13% improvement.
To further support its mission, the CCS
also created new partnerships with a
number of organizations – almost twice as
many as last year.
organization’s 14 regional offices and
16 service centres.
Proceeds from the Daffodil Ball and
contributions from major donors were also
up over last year, bringing in $2.2 million.
Planned donations remained stable, earning the organization $2.5 million.
A better understanding of cancer gives
people fighting the disease and their loved
ones a reason to hope. With $3 million
invested in information services, the CCS
enjoys a presence on numerous communication platforms: telephone (1 888 939-3333),
Web (cancer.ca), new publications and even
social networks. The organization’s credibility and respectability make it a preferred
source of information in a field where there
are many players.
More money for our mission
With increased revenues, the Canadian
Cancer Society was able to invest even
more in its mission. In 2010-2011, the
organization directed $3.5 million – or
21% more than last year – to five fields of
action: research, advocacy, prevention,
information and support.
Without research, it would be impossible to
beat cancer, which is why the Quebec
Division of the CCS invested $6.6 million
($1 million more than last year) to what is
essentially the organization’s top priority.
This amount will allow Quebec researchers
to continue their fight for life.
The CCS also invested more in prevention,
since it’s known that roughly 50% of
cancer cases could be prevented through
healthy lifestyle choices and public health
policies. Consequently, an additional
$1.4 million was committed to a number
of projects, such as the Trottibus Walking
School Bus.
The CCS spent close to $700,000 more
than last year to provide support and services to people with cancer and their loved
ones. New services were developed, making
it possible to reach and satisfy the needs of
people living in large urban centres as well
as in more remote regions, thanks to the
The CCS also wants to make things
happen. For this reason, it has invested
$558,000 in advocacy activities, thus taking
a public stance and ensuring its voice is
heard in areas such as tobacco control.
None of these initiatives would have been
possible without the commitment of our
thousands of volunteers and donors, and
the 200 employees who are dedicated to the
fight against cancer. On behalf of myself
and the members of the Performance
Assurance Committee, I would like to thank
you for your involvement. Even the smallest
thing you do can make a big difference.

Facing cancer as a couple
Lisette Ouellet and Gaétan Desrosiers have
been together for 17 years. In that time, the
couple has weathered many storms, including cancer. Together, they experienced the
shock of receiving the terrible news, they
stood up to the challenge and they beat
the disease.
“When I was diagnosed with cancer, I
thought it was the end of the world and
that I was going to die,” says Lisette. It
was the same for Gaétan, who set about
putting his affairs in order when he
received his diagnosis.
Lisette and Gaétan
Chair, Performance
Assurance Committee
The couple decided to roll up their sleeves
and help and encourage each other. “We
took the time to talk to and listen to one
another. To keep our relationship strong,
communication was the key.”
As cancer survivors, Lisette and Gaétan
wanted to help others living with the
disease. “Following our cancer experience,
Gaétan and I saw a news story about a
woman who committed suicide after learning she had cancer,” recalls Lisette. “We
realized that if she had been able to talk to
someone, she might have been able to cope
with the disease. So we contacted the
Canadian Cancer Society and offered to
become volunteers. The organization provided us with training and since then,
Cancer J’écoute has been putting us in
touch with people facing a cancer diagnosis.”
By lending an attentive ear to the people
with whom they are matched, Lisette and
Gaétan offer comfort and hope to those
living with cancer.
When asked what they learned from their
cancer experience, the response is immediate: “First of all, you have to take the time
to grieve. Then you have to talk and help
the other person open up and verbalize
their fears. Throughout our journey, we discovered strengths we never knew we had.”

“My maternal grandparents both died of
cancer,” he explains, “so it was completely
natural for me to donate my know-how and
my time to a noble cause like that of the
Canadian Cancer Society.”
Simon has used his professional experience
to promote various Canadian Cancer
Society (CCS) activities. Paws for Hope,
Daffodil Days and the Relay For Life have
all enjoyed tremendous visibility thanks
to his commitment. He is also actively
involved as the 2011 chair of the steering
committee and head of communications
for the Relay For Life in Terrebonne.
Participating in the fight against cancer has
brought Simon many nice surprises. “For
me, volunteering is very rewarding, and
being involved in an organization like the
CCS that works to improve the quality of
life of those who are ill is very stimulating.
In the time that I’ve been volunteering, I’ve
had the opportunity to socialize with and
to meet some extraordinary individuals. I
would like to thank the CCS for exposing
me to such wonderful emotions and for
allowing me to use my experience to help

Thank you for joining in
the fight for life
Giving. Offering your time to a cause,
donating money, being there for those who
need it – these are all actions that can have
significant repercussions on the lives of so
many people. Oftentimes, we don’t realize
how big of an impact this generous act has,
particularly if you consider the sheer number of people who are affected, directly or
indirectly, by cancer.
Cancer touches everyone
If the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is
now the organization with the greatest
impact on the fight against all cancers
that’s available to all Quebecers, it’s thanks
to the generosity of its donors. A total of
296,510 people made a donation to the
CCS in 2010-2011; that’s an impressive
number of individuals making a tangible
commitment to the fight for life.
More than $30 million was collected
through various fundraising activities and a
flexible donation program that’s accessible to
all. The money raised enables us to make a
real difference in the lives of the hundreds of
thousands of people living with the disease.
Thank you
Volunteers, employees, donors, all of them
rallied around a single, common goal: to
fight against cancer and enhance the
quality of life of people living with the
disease. Without the generosity of its
donors, the CCS would be unable to offer
all of its services and to constantly improve
those services to better meet the public’s
growing needs.
The CCS has decided to publish, in the
pages that follow, the lists of donors who
have helped to further the organization’s
mission. They are divided into four broad
categories: leader and major donors,
Daffodil Ball donors, Relay For Life
donors, and those who have contributed
by way of planned giving.
On behalf of families, friends and colleagues who have been touched by cancer,
please accept our deepest gratitude for
your generosity.

Donors – Planned Giving
“For many years, my mother regularly took
part in door-to-door canvassing to collect
donations for the Canadian Cancer Society.
She also used to donate money to this
organization each year, and to many other
health-related organizations. My parents
were tireless volunteers when it came to
Luc Marion
Huguet te Marion
fundraising campaigns or activities. My
mother followed my dad’s lead and decided to make a testamentary bequest to the Canadian
Cancer Society. She wanted her donation to be used for research, development and the
improvement of services for people living with the disease. Her gesture allowed her to give
back a little of what she received from life.”
Luc Marion, son of Huguette Marion

“Thanks to the advances made possible by research,
people close to me, including my wife, have survived a
bout with cancer. So I know first-hand the importance of
investing in research and prevention, and of providing
information and support to those living with the disease.
That is why I agreed to co-chair the Canadian Cancer
Society’s Daffodil Ball – to spread this message of hope
for life. Cancer is a plague that must be beaten and we
all must work towards that goal. By joining forces, we
will succeed in vanquishing this terrible illness that
touches each and every one of us.”

“Our company was looking for a cause that would
rally our franchises, our brokers and our employees
throughout Quebec. Many of them were already
contributing to the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay
For Life, either as a partner or as a participant. There
are many aspects about the Relay For Life that stand
out for us: it takes place throughout Quebec, it is well
structured, it benefits the cause in a significant way
and it enjoys great visibility. We believe it is important
to become involved in the fight against cancer. Being
diagnosed with cancer is a dramatic event, but the
Relay is a friendly, unifying occasion that reminds us
that we are fighting for life.”
