Living in France – a chat about the weather
P:
Hi there. Lovely weather isn’t it ?
S:
It certainly is. I was trying to say that to my neighbour just now, but he
didn’t seem to understand me. How should I say it?
P:
Well, usually to talk about the weather you use ‘il fait....’ so you’d say ‘Il fait
beau,’ if it’s fine.
S:
‘Il fait beau,’ it’s fine – and what if it’s not so good ?
P:
Well you’d say ‘il fait mauvais’ - if it’s not very nice.
S:
‘il fait mauvais.’ What about hot and cold ?
P:
You still use ‘il fait..’ so you’d say ‘il fait chaud’ or ‘il fait froid,’ like the ‘C’ for
‘chaud’ and the ‘F’ for ‘froid’ that you sometimes see on hot and cold taps.
S:
Ahh, I often wondered what that meant. ‘il fait chaud’ - hot and ‘il fait froid’
- cold.
P:
You’ll sometimes hear people use ‘il y a ..’ for talking about the weather as
well. So you would say ‘il y a des nuages’ - if it’s cloudy.
S:
‘Il y a des nuages’.
P:
And if it’s windy - ‘il y a du vent’.
S:
‘il y a du vent’.
P:
Or ‘il y a du brouillard ‘ - if it’s foggy.
S:
Oh, that’s a hard one – ‘il y a du brouillard’. So I use ‘il fait...’ or ‘il y a ...’ and
just add the type of weather. That’s great. Now what about snow? Not that
we have a lot and not that we’ve got any at the moment, but how would I
say that?
P:
Well, if it’s snowing, it’s ‘il neige.’
S:
‘Il neige’ - it’s snowing.
P:
Well, let’s hope you don’t have to use that word any day soon!
S:
I hope not - thanks for that.

Très bien, merci. Et toi, Marilyn?
M:
Ça va, ça va. Il fait beau, n’est-ce pas?
P:
Oui, heureusement. Je viens de rentrer de l’Angleterre et là-bas il faisait très
froid et dans le nord il neigeait.
M:
Ah bon ?
P:
Oui, je suis très content d’être de retour.
M:
Ici il a fait mauvais la semaine dernière avec du brouillard le matin …. mais
pas de neige.
P:
J’ai vu la météo ce matin à la télé et le beau temps va continuer jusqu'à la fin
de la semaine, mais la semaine prochaine il fera moins chaud, et on annonce
des perturbations et du vent fort.
M:
Ah, ça m’est égal, parce que la semaine prochaine je pars en vacances aux
Caraïbes.
P:
Ah, tu as de la chance. Là-bas tu es sûre d’avoir du soleil. Tu seras toute
bronzée quand je te reverrai à ton retour.
M:
Oui, j’espère passer deux semaines au soleil sur la plage.
P:
J’espère que tu m’enverras une carte postale.
M:
Oui, bien sûr.
P:
