obtain the gauge produced by the Parc Naturel Marin d’Iroise showing
the minimum sizes of fish caught and the number of catches allowed,
as well as the info on the current local by-laws.
For sustainable shellfishing:

• Put overturned stones back where you found them in order to
safeguard the ecosystem (statutory obligation)

programme in our offices or on the Internet! Throughout the year, we
also offer a complete interactive diary for the area on www.aulneporzay-tourisme.com
Angling

with its combination of migrating, carnivorous, and cyprinid fish. You
can use all fishing techniques: whipped-fly fishing for salmon and large
shad, fishing with lures and baits for pike, pikeperch (zander) or perch,
pole fishing, feeder fishing, quiver tip, float fishing, Bolognese rods,
carp fishing with stalking rods (for anglers who move from one place to
another) or with stationary rods…
The plain of Le Porzay boasts several first-class stretches of water
where the freshwater brown trout is king , and where, here too, you can
go fishing “au toc”, with flies or ultra léger (extremely light casting) in
stunning, unspoilt spots that will delight nature lovers.

and the Saint-Gildas fountain.
Located on the southern slopes of
the black mountains in the centre
of the verdant plain of Porzay,
Cast has preserved magnificent
traces of the past with its two
chapels and a group of statues
adjoining the parish church - the
only one in Brittany depicting the
hunt of Saint Hubert. The hills
of Ménez Quelc’h - the highest
point in the area - are revealed in
a magnificent natural panorama,
as you wend your way along the
hilltop route, the former Roman
road, and the Saint-Gildas wood:
hiking footpaths that are bound to
delight the visitor.
Châteaulin
You’ll be captivated by Châteaulin, Port
right in the heart of Finistère.
Its geographical situation makes

treasures of the region.
The town is crossed by the NantesBrest canal, much loved by anglers
and yachtsmen.
Visitors will be able to enjoy the
hiking or cycling trails, outings
along the towpath or discovering the town’s historic heritage,
especially the site of the Vieux
Bourg (old town) with the NotreDame chapel.
Numerous sporting and cultural
activities are available throughout the year: kayaking, rowing, fishing,
cycling, tennis, swimming pool, horse riding, theatre, conferences,
concerts, exhibitions, cinema, library, toy library…

Land of Legends, Dinéault comes
from the old Breton “din” and “heol”
– the sun. From the Aulne to the
foothills of the Ménez-Hom, this is
a commune of natural charm and a
remarkable heritage. A statue from
the Gallo-Roman period supposedly
representing the goddess Brigit, the
universal goddess of the Celts, was
rediscovered here in 1913. This seems
to confirm the celtic sanctification of
the Menez-Hom, which, formerly a
strategic point, enabled the lookouts to warn of danger by lighting
their beacons. The Ménez-Hom
beckons you to climb its slopes to the
330-metre-high summit, still called
«yed” or “look-out», to discover a view
that has fascinated man since time
immemorial.
ploéven
You’ll be able to explore the commune
of Porzay, nestling in its small shaded
valley. Ploéven is classified as a “Commune du Patrimoine Rural
de Bretagne” and “Village fleuri” (Commune of Brittany’s rural
heritage, and floral village). Pause for a while to explore the area
and enjoy the produce of our small-scale producers and shopkeepers (bakery, pastry shop, crêperie, café bar tobacconist.
With their shared desire to preserve, develop and promote their
architectural and scenic heritage, over 20 communes are classified as a “Commune du Patrimoine Rural de Bretagne”. Ploéven is
one of them. Ploéven is both rural and maritime, with an old and
prestigious civil and religious heritage. This commune also offers a
rural-heritage trail.

port-launay
The last watershed of the Nantes-Brest canal, the Port-Launay wet
dock has been a flourishing trading port for the last two centuries. The
only one of its kind in Brittany, nowadays this picture-book spot reveals
long 19th-century facades were traders and ship owners once had their
headquarters. This is a landscape that is both marine and fluvial, a water
colour in the Aulne valley displaying a superb expanse of sail. And in it,
the quays installed by Naploeon III underline an iridescent landscape
where sailors will happily resist the call of the sea.

Quéménéven
Within a stone’s throw of the sea, this little village is full of dynamism
and tradition. The jewel of the commune and a spot not to be missed,
the Notre-Dame de Kergoat chapel still celebrates its pardon on the
Sunday after 15 August. This has brought fame to this little commune
thanks to the renowned painting by Jules Breton. From the surroundings of the Bois du Duc to the base of the Locronan mountain, on
the shaded footpaths of the trees, there is an open invitation to come
and discover its bucolic charm.
You’ll be able to admire the

The Nantes-Brest canal
Further exploration…
A superb fluvial and green corridor crossing the whole of Brittany,
the Nantes-Brest canal (the longest in France) offers a plethora of
different landscapes for the hiker.
Originally created for military purposes, this waterway was made
navigable as part of the economic development of the Breton peninsula. With its towpath running alongside the length of the canal,
which is accessible to walkers and cyclists, it is nowadays used only
for tourism purposes.
Nowadays, it remains a natural and cultural attraction where you’ll
be captivated by the charm and serenity of its banks!
The Maison Éclusière (wildlife interpretation centre ) and the
aquatic Observatory
The venue for animals that swim, fly or crawl, the interpretation
centre helps you explore the fauna of the canal (notably through its
commentated summer walks). Fish, birds, rabbits and sheep will
unveil for you the life of the canal through a trail of animal tracks…

The Parc Naturel Marin
d’Iroise
Here, you are in the heart of a
remarkable marine area that is
hugely diverse and exceptionally
rich. The Iroise is a key area for
many bird species and marine
mammals. It is also an area of
numerous activities with strong
social and economic implications.
The first of its kind in France,
the Iroise marine nature reserve
was created in Brittany by the
decree of 28 September 2007.
This statute enables the Iroise to
combine the preservation of the
natural heritage with the sustainable development of sea-based
activities. Its aim, amongst
others, is to facilitate and foster
practices at sea that respect the
marine environment.
The Iroise marine nature
reserve is part of the Agence
des aires marines protégées
(agency for protected marine
areas), a public body regulated
by the Ministry of sustainable
development.

A Regional National Park
The
Armorique
national park is an
area of inhabited
territory that is recognised at
national level for the richness and
and the vulnerability of its natural,
cultural and rural heritage. Its
Syndicat Mixte (joint association) is setting up a sustainable
development project. There are
currently 50 regional national
parks in France, two of which are
in Brittany, including the one in the
gulf of Morbihan. Covering an area
of 125,000 hectares that includes
44 communes*, the Parc d’Armorique extends over the islands in
the Iroise sea, the Crozon peninsula, the sound of Brest, and
the Aulne Maritime as far as the
Monts d’Arrée.
Its missions are to preserve and
promote the wealth of the natural,
cultural and rural resources,
to support the organisation, to
develop the economy and the
vitality of the region, tourism and
culture, to welcome visitors and
to foster public awareness. The
Park aims to boost its network of
themed houses and museums. It is
the key to exploring the Armorican
massif, the heart of Finistère.
* with its port towns of Brest, Carhaix,
Châteauneuf du Faou and Landivisiau
The most highly qualified specialists in the field have focussed their
attention on this as-yet little-known maritime zone. They have taken
a fresh look at the biodiversity, heritage and navigation over this
outstanding bio-geographical area that is considered one of the
world’s most beautiful sounds. Worth reading!

The Menez-Hom, at the gateway
to the Crozon peninsula
The Menez-Hom formed a
strategic point on the Crozon
peninsula. Its height enabled a
look-out to observe the region
and watch out for warnings from
the island of Ouessant (Ushant).
Whether the danger came from
the Normans, pirates (15th-c) or
the English, he would be alerted
by a beacon and then light
another one to relay the warning.
The Menez-Hom still bears
the nickname “Yed” – meaning
look-out – from those times.
In 2004, the site was classed as
“natural heritage” for its wildlife.
This classification enables it to
be protected without interfering
too much with the sporting and
leisure activities such as hanggliding and paragliding or even
the model-aircraft flying that is
so popular on the Menez-Hom.
The summit of the Menez-Hom
offers a stunning panorama over
the bay of Douarnenez, the sound
of Brest, the Crozon peninsula,
Le Porzay and the Monts d’Arrée.
It is also the starting point for
numerous walks and hikes.

The Beaches
You’ll be enchanted with our long sandy beaches! Time for a swim
or for lazing around or even water activities (sand yachting, surfing,
sea kayaking, etc.)… The choice is yours! As all the best childhood
memories are often found in seaside photo albums… a children’s
club, beach activities and sandcastle competitions are also on offer
to our young holidaymakers throughout the summer. In the evening
after dinner, gaze in wonder at the beauty of the sun setting over
the sea… Out of season, take in the fresh air with a walk along the
sand whilst admiring the beauty of the landscape… Here, there’s
something for all tastes… everyone will find what they’re looking for!
7 fine sandy beaches
to explore:
Hey Mum, “Do they really have menhirs in Brittany?”
Yes, they do! Brittany has lots of megalithic treasures. Around
here, we encourage you to keep your eyes open! A good many
historical traces can still be seen, such as menhirs (the one at
the Pointe de Tal ar Grip (Plomodiern) and the Stone-Age Stele
(Ploéven), Dolmens like the one at Menez Lié (Saint-Nic) as
well as the Tombelles and the remains of Le Cromlech on the
summit of the Menez-Hom. Want to see more? Then head for the
Pointe de Pen-Hir at Camaret-sur-Mer to explore the 65 Lagatjar
menhirs, which prove beyond a shadow of doubt that the peninsula has been inhabited for thousands of years!

The Vieux Bourg on the left bank of the Aulne is where the first town
of Châteaulin was established in the 10th century, in the vicinity of the
fortified castle constructed by the counts of Cornouaille. Here, you’ll
discover the Notre-Dame chapel (end-13th-18th C), thatched cottages
(17th C) and a lovely view over the Nantes-Brest canal.
Visiting times: in July and August – Further info on (+33) (0)2 98 86 10 05.
This Neolithic-style chapel dating from 1858 has the distinction of
possessing an exterior altar for celebrating one of Brittany’s most
important pardons, which attracts 10,000 pilgrims during the last
weekend of August each year. Inside the chapel, a historical-retrospective video recording of the pardon is on offer. You’ll also be able to
admire the sizeable granite statue of Saint Anne, weighing around 700
kilos, which is carried during the anniversary pardons.
Visiting times: All year, every day, from 9am to 6pm.

du Menez-Hom (Plomodiern)
The chapel was built at the foot of the Menez-Hom in 1570, over the
ruins of a Roman chapel. The parish enclosure encompasses of a triple
monumental entrance (1739) and a calvary with three crosses (1544).
It was formerly a place of pilgrimage and a venue for fairs. Classed as
a historic monument in 1916, the chapel boasts magnificent recentlyrestored pink altarpieces.
Visiting times: from 4 April to 4 October 2015. Every day from 9:30am
to 6:30pm.

hapelle Notre Dame de Kergoat
C
(Quéménéven)
This large chapel is 35 metres long and 13 metres wide, and includes
a 5.5-metre nave. Along with the statue of the virgin and child, its 7
stained-glass windows date back to the 16th century. The chapel and
its pardon were made famous by the painting by Jules Breton entitled
“le Pardon de Kergoat” (1891), which is exhibited in the Quimper finearts museum. Date of the pardon: The first Sunday after 15 August.
Visiting times: All year, every day, from 9am to 6pm.

Saint Hubert (Cast)
This group of statues in the village of Cast
was classed as a historic monument in
1914; standing proudly in front of the parish
church dedicated to Saint Jerome, it dates
from the 16th century and is the only one of
its kind in Brittany.
