ranges including crocodile flip flops, collars for dogs and bracelets…

and an insistence that everything be hand-made in the highest traditions
of French craftsmanship. In a very short space of time, the wider world becomes
aware of the genius of his work and Pinel&Pinel leather goods are to be found
in the windows of Colette, Harrods, Victoire and Lane Crawford.
There is just one short step from small leather goods to bags and cases,
but there seemed little point in making that step if subsequently one were just
going to walk in the footsteps of others. Fred Pinel did make bags, bags that
were the envy of fashionistas everywhere, but he also began making trunks,
custom trunks. Trunks that were not just empty containers made of leather, but
entire worlds built around an object or need.

Inspired by the picnic cases of the thirties, Pinel&Pinel trunks incorporate all
the functionality of smart furniture custom-built for individual objects, with wheels
on – included to feed the nomadic impulse or dutifully follow globe-trotting
owners. Colours range from the garish and fashionable to the sober and classical.
The audiophile with a fondness for cinema could opt for a fully equipped Bang &
Olufsen Movie-Trunk. The workaholic could literally take his office with him with
the i-Trunk, housing an iMac and associated equipment – a tad larger than an
iBook but so much more complete. The latest Pinel creation is the Arcade PS
Trunk specially conceived for serious video game fans, including an oversize
screen, PS3 games, 1800 watt sound system, console joysticks, racing seats
with steering wheel and pedals, and all available in a choice of 51 colours.
What could be better?
At workshops located in an old biscuit factory at the foot of Montmartre in Paris,
Pinel&Pinel also takes on orders for bespoke leatherwork and engineering masterpieces defined by the individual requirements of his clients. Since 2007,
these have included the celebrated Michael Jordan, perfumer Francis Kurkdjian,
and grand houses such as Krug, Vacheron Constantin, Piaget and Jacquet Droz.
The Krug trunk, as an example, involved 700 hours of work. Pinel, the Mary
Poppins of our time, succeeded in fitting in a table, four stools, four tulip glasses,
a champagne bucket, a full table setting, two cold-storage drawers, two mother
of pearl caviar spoons, and a picnic blanket. A Cashmere picnic blanket. A feat
that is repeated with each new order. A feat, which has put this small company
at the forefront of luxury manufacturing and restored a degree of nobility to the
term “custom”.

ne could dwell on the palatial architecture, landmark towers, and exquisite facilities
of an establishment about to celebrate its centenary – 104 rooms and suites including the most
luxurious accommodation ever built in a mountain village, and full-service private chalets.
One would be amiss in not mentioning its 1,800 sq m spa, and five restaurants including the
exclusive Le Grill. Gault & Millau awarded the establishment a rating of 16, but to properly
understand the degrees of excellence that reigns here one must delve a little into its history.
The Gstaad Palace is one of the few remaining Swiss properties belonging to the Scherz
family that still runs it presently. At the grand opening in 1913, the Royal Hotel, Winter & Gstaad
Palace boasted the high luxury of private bathrooms in almost a third of its 150 rooms. In 1939,
following 25 rather erratic years involving both the First World War and Great Depression
of 1929, the Société du Palace elected Ernst and Silvia Scherz-Bezzola to the position
of directors. Almost immediately they faced their first great challenge with the outbreak of the
Second World War which almost bankrupt the establishment. While Ernst was conscripted,
Silvia ran the hotel, growing vegetables and raising chickens to cater to the few guests that did
come. In 1947, the situation having improved little, the shareholders decide to dispose of their
assets. At first, unable to raise sufficient funds, the couple saw the Palace sold to
an industrialist. Later, with the help of friends and guests they succeed in acquiring the shares,
saving the hotel, and proceeded to deploy all their talents in improving the establishment by
organising grand fund raising galas with artists of the period in attendance. Over time, the
Gstaad Palace grew to become the palatial establishment it is today. In 1968 their son
Ernst Andrea and his wife Shiwa took over responsibility for running the place. Presently,
it is their own son that holds the reins – the continuation of a long family tradition.

n pourrait s’attarder sur l’architecture de ce palace qui fêtera ses cent ans en 2013,
sur ses fameuses tourelles qui en font un repère dans la ville ou sur ses équipements hors norme,
à l’image de sa clientèle et ses 104 chambres et suites dont la plus luxueuse jamais construite dans
un village de montagne. Impossible de passer sous silence ce spa de 1800m2, les cinq restaurants
dont le Grill, noté 16 au Gault & Millau ou les chalets privés bénéficiants des services palaces…
Afin de comprendre l’excellence qui habite ce lieu mythique, revenons sur son histoire et rappelons
que le Gstaad Palace est l’un des derniers établissements suisses à appartenir à la famille qui
le dirige. Certes, les Scherz n’étaient pas là en 1913 à l’ouverture du « Royal Hotel, Winter & Gstaad
Palace » qui, grand luxe, proposait des salles de bain dans un tiers de ses 150 chambres. Après
25 ans d’exploitation erratiques à cause de la Première Guerre Mondiale et de la crise de 29,
la Société du Palace nomme en 1938 Ernst et Silvia Scherz-Bezzola au poste de directeurs.
Mais le second conflit mondial éclate, réduisant le nombre des clients du palace à la portion congrue,
le menant au bord de la faillite. Ernst à l’armée, Silvia dirige l’hôtel en cultivant un potager et élevant
des poules. Devant la situation, en 1947, les actionnaires décident de se défaire de leurs actions.
Le couple ne parvient pas à réunir les fonds nécessaires en 24 heures et le Gstaad Palace est vendu
à un industriel. Avec le soutien d’amis et clients, Ernst et Silvia Scherz parviennent à racheter les
actions et à sauver l’hôtel. Ils déploient alors tout leur talent pour améliorer l’hôtel et le faire connaître
en organisant de grands galas avec les artistes de l’époque. Au fil du temps, le Gstaad Palace
devient l’établissement hors normes qu’il est aujourd’hui, grâce au travail, à la passion et au talent
de Ernst et Silvia Scherz qui passent la main en 1968 à leur fils Ernst Andrea et sa femme Shiwa
qui porteront eux aussi très haut le palace familial, aujourd’hui encore dirigé et magnifié par leur fils.

his year, 2012, sees the appearance of a fresh-faced version of the ever-impressive
and sculptural Phantom though the changes are, for the most part, more technical
than physical and only identifiable to the professional.
Externally, even the untrained eye will doubtless note the replacing of the model’s
iconic rounded headlights by a version resembling the styling of the Ghost.
No great transformation to the interior either apart from minor upholstery details on
the ever inviting seats. The most dramatic changes have not been aesthetic –
why change such a winning formula. In fact, the new range has undergone more
of an upgrade than a make-over. But what an upgrade it has been. In a single stoke,
the Phantom has joined other vehicles of its class by incorporating the complete
range of electronic and video driving aids. The control screen is hidden within the
woodwork of the dashboard and provides parking trajectory assistance and a bird’s
eye view of any obstacles around the car that may cause damage to the impressive
finish. Refinements that until now were a surprising omission in a vehicle of
this calibre, but whose absence had added a certain venerable English charm to
this grande dame. The dashboard and instruments, on the other hand, have
retained every bit of that eternal timelessness: the slim and oversized steering
wheel, the controls, the metal detailing on the push-buttons, and the old-style
leather ceiling finish, though perforated by hundreds of fibre optic lights that shine
through transforming the Phantom’s interior into a panoramic starry night.

Une transformation plus technique qu’esthétique puisque seuls les experts parviendront
à distinguer les changements opérés sur les boucliers ou la grille de calandre.
Plus évidentes, les optiques qui abandonnent les phares ronds si particuliers de
Rolls Royce
la Phantom pour reprendre les codes stylistiques de la Ghost. Dans l’habitacle, pas non
plus de grands changements esthétiques si ce n’est une modification des rainurages
des sièges toujours aussi accueillants. Non, ce n’est pas au niveau esthétique que la
Phantom a subit ses plus profonds bouleversements ; pourquoi changer une formule
qui fonctionne à merveille ? De fait, ce restylage consiste plus en une amélioration de
la belle qu’en un véritable changement. Quoi que. En un claquement de doigt,
la Phantom a fait un bon de géant dans le… présent pour se mettre au niveau
d’équipements d’une concurrence qui a depuis longtemps fait entrer l’électronique
et la video dans ses aides à la conduite. Ainsi l’écran dissimulé dans les boiseries
du tableau de bord indique maintenant les trajectoires pendant les manœuvres serrées
ou donne une vue du dessus de la voiture afin de bien vérifier que son impressionnante
carrosserie ne frotte pas… Des raffinements dont la Phantom ne disposait pas:
étonnant dans une auto de ce niveau mais ce petit manque venait finalement rajouter
au charme de la belle anglaise qui cultive avec bonheur les références au passé.

A quaint contrast to the astonishingly serious handling and performance of this
superlative vehicle, whose silence and riding comfort seem out of step with its size
and height. The Rolls Royce engineers have a term for this phenomenon –
the flying carpet – a name that does the experience justice, especially considering
the sheepskin floor coverings. An interior so comfortable and plush, that you can
feel your worries and stress literally ebbing away. The lightest of touches and the
6.75 litre V12 purrs into life, pressing those within into their seats as it carries you
from 0 to 100 in under six seconds, and leaving those without far behind. The new
8-speed automatic transmission performs its functions perfectly, adding still further
sophistication to the vehicle’s handling and reducing fuel consumption and emissions by 10% into the bargain.
The Rolls Royce Phantom Coupé, with or without enhancements, remains to this
day one of the finest automobiles in the world. Operational silence, faultless comfort and refinement, and performance that transforms the driving experience into an
ongoing pleasure. A sanctuary of luxury and exclusivity, the Phantom Coupé is
a vehicle you look forward to driving yourself, whose comfort is such that you’ll
sincerely regret reaching your destination.
There are automobiles and there are Rolls Royces, but there is only one Phantom
Coupé.
Ainsi, le traitement d’un autre âge du volant, fin et surdimensionné, les commodos
du tableau de bord, tirettes métalliques de boutons poussoirs ou le ciel de toit à l’ancienne
qui peut s’illuminer grâce à plusieurs centaines de fibres optiques, transformant
l’habitacle de la Phantom Coupé en un salon sous les étoiles. Un look suranné qui
contraste avec le comportement routier de cette voiture hors normes. Surprenante par
ses dimensions et sa hauteur, la Phantom Coupé bluffe par son silence de fonctionnement et la qualité de son amortissement. Les équipes de Rolls Royce nomment
ce phénomène « Flying Carpet », le tapis volant et cette expression résume
parfaitement l’ambiance à bord. Les peaux de mouton qui tapissent les sols aussi. Tout
est feutré, confortable, reposant et destressant. A la moindre sollicitation, le V12
de 6,75 litres répond présent dans un feulement et propulse l’auto de 0 à 100 en moins
de 6 secondes, collant au siège tous les occupants et distançant la plupart des autres
automobilistes. La nouvelle boite automatique à 8 vitesses remplit à merveille ses fonctions, rajoutant encore de l’agrément de conduite et de la fluidité à la Phantom Coupé
tout en faisant baisser de 10% ses consommations et ses émissions.
Mis à part ces changements, la Rolls Royce Phantom Coupé demeure ce qui est
certainement l’une des voitures les plus réussies au monde. Silence de fonctionnement,
confort sans faille, raffinement et puissance sont au rendez-vous à chaque instant,
transformant la conduite d’un tel engin en un plaisir sans cesse renouvelé. Bulle de luxe
et d’exclusivité, la Phantom Coupé se pilote soi-même et fait regretter que le trajet
soi si court tant l’ambiance à bord est exceptionnellement relaxante.

eralded as the automotive future, the electric car has come through its unat-
tractive adolescence and begun to take form as an unabashed head turner and
stealer of hearts. Conceived and designed by the Danish father of the Aston Martin
DB9, V8 Vantage, and BMW Z8, Henrik Fisker, the Karma has come out as the
belle of the ball sporting sleek and shapely lines that hint at its power, performance,
and comfort. Unlike its showy challengers, the Karma’s features make it the first of
an entirely new generation of automobile: this is a fully electric powered 4-seat
grand touring sedan, which happens to boasts a combustion engine for all the benefits of a hybrid. A vast advantage over its two-seater all-electric competitors limited
to daily commutes by the charging of their batteries. A limitation that the Karma has
done away with thanks to its hybrid system that demands no change in the habits
of its drivers. With the batteries depleted, a quick stop at the pump and she’s ready
for several hundred more kilometres. But, don’t misunderstand: this is no Prius,
Fisker Karma
as here the combustion engine serves only to recharge the batteries of this divinely
curvaceous vehicle.

nnoncée comme l’avenir de l’automobile, la voiture électrique termine une ado-
lescence au physique ingrat et commence à prendre des formes qui font tourner
les têtes et chavirer les cœurs. Pensée et dessinée par le père des Aston Martin
DB9 et V8 Vantage ainsi que de la BMW Z8, le danois Henrik Fisker, la Karma fait
figure de reine du bal avec ses lignes tendues, racées et galbées qui inspirent tout
à la fois puissance, confort et sportivité. De fait, la Karma se différencie de beaucoup de ses concurrentes branchées par plusieurs aspects qui en font la toute
première d’une nouvelle génération d’automobiles : c’est une berline de Grand
Tourisme à 4 places entièrement propulsée par la fée électricité tout en étant
un véhicule hybride car disposant d’un moteur thermique. Un atout considérable
face aux strictes 2 places d’une concurrence encore rare qui ne permet rien d’autre
que des trajets quotidiens ou des déplacements limités du fait du temps de charge
des batteries. Grâce à son système hybride, la Karma a remisé ce problème au placard
et propose ainsi une auto qui ne change en rien les habitudes de consommations
des automobilistes puisqu’un simple passage à la pompe permet de repartir pour
quelques centaines de kilomètres. Mais la Karma n’est pas une Prius de luxe car ce
moteur thermique qui lui donne sa souplesse d’utilisation n’est là que pour charger
les batteries qui propulsent cette sculpturale automobile.

This remains a vehicle whose propulsion is 100% electric. Its 403 bhp and unladen
weight of 2.5 tonnes make for an unparalleled and powerful – if initially disconcerting
– driving experience. For there is no V12 roar at the touch of the right pedal,
and no vibrations either. Here silence is truly golden, except at low speed where
a sound reminiscent of the space shuttle announce the Karma’s presence to pedestrians. As for acceleration, while this is no Porsche 911, there is more than enough
power and torque to achieve 0 to 100 km/h in a very respectable 6.6 seconds –
comparable performance by this magnificent GT to its avowed rivals the Porsche
Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide. At the wheel of the Karma, what surprises
most, is the silent acceleration. Linear, smooth, and without any loss of power, even
when the combustion engine starts up to recharge the batteries. Fast without being
blindingly so, the car remains glued to the road while offering a selection of alternative driving modes from controls housed on a pleasantly uncluttered dashboard.
For the Karma is as beautiful on the inside as it is head-turning on the outside.
Once lowered into the cockpit – this is a very low car – you begin to appreciate the
quality of the leather, the finish, and rather unusually, the driftwood console panel
that makes a nice change from walnut. The feel within is luxurious and plush
without being over the top. One feels good in every sense of the term in this
electric-powered vehicle, whose batteries traverse the space integrated into the
body structure within their own compartment which ends in the rear trunk. If there
is one failing to this exceptional vehicle, it has to be the rather limited luggage
space. In short, the Karma boasts driving pleasure unlike any other, enhanced
further by the silence and smoothness of the electric motor, and its beauty is
undeniable. In fact, there are those already suggesting we may be witnessing
the birth of a new motoring icon.

Avec ses 403 chevaux pour un poids à vide de 2,5 tonnes, la belle offre une puissance agréable mais déroutante. En effet, pas de rugissement de V12 lorsqu’on
effleure la pédale de droite, pas de vibrations non plus. Le silence est d’or sauf
à basse vitesse où l’auto diffuse un bruit de navette spatiale pour signaler sa
présence aux piétons. Côté accélération, la puissance et le couple sont là et si
la Karma ne dispose pas des accélération d’une 911, elle abat tout de même
le 0 à 100 en 6,6 secondes, plaçant ainsi cette magnifique GT légèrement en
dessous des performances de ses concurrentes avouées les Porsches Panamera
et Aston Martin Rapide. Mais ce qui surprend au volant de la Karma, c’est cette
accélération silencieuse, linéaire, sans à coup et sans perte de puissance, à peine
perturbée par la mise en route du moteur thermique qui vient alimenter
en électricité les moteurs électriques de la belle. Rapide sans être fulgurante,
la Karma colle littéralement à la route et peut varier les plaisirs en fonction du mode
de conduite choisi sur un tableau de bord épuré du plus bel effet. Car si la Karma
est belle à l’extérieur, elle est également remarquable à l’intérieur. Après être
«descendu» dans l’habitacle, on apprécie la qualité de cuirs et la présence inhabituelle

and white hull in the harbour. Yet the lines of this palatial craft are not at all
ostentatious, in so far as one can say that of a vessel of this size and class.
From the main deck, the visitor enters a spacious living area of about 140 sq m
that features floor to ceiling glass for almost uninterrupted views of the sea on both
sides. Colours are muted, with warm neutral tones, deep sofas, and thick carpets
adding to the immediate feeling of comfort. Surprisingly, for such a luminous and
welcoming room with a dining table that seats 20, this is probably the least used
part of the vessel. The visit then continues through to a sculptural glass and steel
staircase worthy of a cruise ship, made all the more grandiose by mirrored walls.
Were one go in the opposite direction, to the lower decks, one would discover four
guest cabins, each equipped with bathrooms that would be the envy of other
yachts’ master bedrooms. On the upper deck you find yourself in the immense
and luminous master suite, decorated in the same neutral tones and chocolate
leather walls of the grand salon. Braided tawny leather decorates the headboard,
and mirrors seem to trick the eye into hidden extensions. There’s a desk,
walk in closet, and his and hers bathrooms of which one includes a bathtub
and external glazing that turns opaque at the touch of a finger. Up a few steps and
the gigantic master suite unveils its trump card, a private forward lounge with
a panoramic view over the bow of the Cloud 9 and the sea. An absolutely magical
spot that lends itself to the singular pursuit of rest and contemplation.

pourraient envier. Sur le pont supérieur, après cet escalier digne d’un paquebot
de croisière, s’ouvre la cabine principale, immense et lumineuse. Ici aussi, on retrouve
les tons neutres du salon principal, des cuirs chocolat tendus sur certains murs, d’autres
de couleur fauve tressés en tête de lit. Ici également des jeux de miroir semblent
dessiner des extensions cachées. En plus d’un bureau, et d’un dressing, la chambre de
maître comprend également deux salles d’eau dont une avec une baignoire donnant sur
un hublot qui s’opacifie d’un effleurement de doigt. Mais cette chambre gigantesque n’a
pas livré tous ses secrets puisqu’une volée de marche conduit ensuite à un salon privé qui
offre une vue panoramique sur la proue de Cloud 9 et sur la mer.

This deck also features another salon with attendant dining area. One can understand why the other would be so little used: though more intimate, the area is airy
and brighter still as it opens out through sliding elements of the all-glass dining

for wanting to sink into the ample sofas or oversized chocolate leather chaise
longue, as the curtains draw around you and a giant screen slides into place, for
this is also a cinema lounge and games room – all be it the most comfortable one
ever. It just remains to wrestle control of the remote and choose a film from the hundreds available or turn to your preferred international satellite channel.
Further forward, the sportier amongst us will discover a small gymnasium.
Two Pullmans fold out from the wall to convert this into an extra cabin. The other
side of the vessel houses the VIP suite for two with the added feature of its own
private external terrace. From the rear deck, a spiral staircase leads to the sun deck
above that can accommodate a hundred or so guests around its large table, sun
loungers, barbecue and jacuzzi. For the child in all of us, this deck also features
fittings that allow you to transform the Cloud 9 into a giant water slide.
The lower deck at the rear of the boat, houses every imaginable toy, game, and
accessory necessary for fun in the water, from surfboard to transparent kayaks and
from jet skis to diving equipment – if it exists, chances are it’s available on Cloud 9.

for charter or sale, for 315,000 €/week and 45,000,000 € respectively.

que les rideaux se ferment, pour laisser la place à un écran géant. Car ce salon sait également se transformer en salle de cinéma ou salle de jeux d’un confort sans bornes. Libre
alors à chacun de choisir un film parmi les centaines contenues dans le disque dur de
Cloud 9 ou de préférer le satellite du pays de son choix. Sur le même niveau, les plus
sportifs trouveront une petite salle de sport qui cache dans ses murs deux couchettes.
À l’opposé, une chambre supplémentaire pour deux personnes qui présente l’agréable
