Romance is alive and well in the favourite city of lovers the world over! With its film
set landscape and the languorous sparkle of sunlight on the Seine, the City of Lights
is endlessly idyllic. Every arrondissement is a stage for lovebirds: for a first date, a
kiss, a Valentine’s Day rendezvous, or to admire the legendary rooftops of Paris. The
city’s squares and gardens too are perfect and utterly romantic places to stroll hand
in hand. In love, Paris is certainly the place where anything is possible.
ROMANTIC PLACES TO WALK
The most inspiring views of Paris
The best viewpoints are for sharing ... with your loved one. The most famous is the
view from the square in front of the Sacré-Coeur basilica, at the top of Montmartre
Hill. In the east of Paris, the hill at Belleville also offers a wonderful panoramic view.
Overlooking the park, the terrace of the restaurant Ô Paris is a great place to sit and
gaze on the city lights in the evening. From the 56th floor of the Tour Montparnasse,
the Ciel de Paris restaurant dominates the capital offering amazing moments. Only the
Eiffel Tower outstrips it, to such an extent that it sometimes has its head in the clouds
… Great views are also guaranteed as you travel up the glass-walled escalators at the
Pompidou Centre. At the top, you can carry on enjoying the view and watch the sun
setting over the city over a drink at Chez Georges, the restaurant on the top floor of
the modern art museum. For those with a sense of daring, the tethered hot air balloon
at the Parc André Citroën is an exciting experience, taking you up into the sky to hover
over the park from a height of 150 metres.

Mythical places to kiss
The ‘Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville’, a snapshot immortalized by Robert Doisneau in 1950,
is one of the most famous in the world! Other classic spots for a photo: the Trocadéro
esplanade with the Eiffel Tower in the background, the Montmartre hillside steps,
below the Sacré-Coeur, the steps of the Palais Garnier Opera House, the square in
front of Notre-Dame, the bridges that span the Saint-Martin Canal... Not forgetting,
the tremendous view up the Champs-Elysées from Place de la Concorde or the Arc de
Triomphe.

And secret Paris streets …
People around the world are familiar with the usual pictures and clichéd images of
romance in Paris, but lovebirds in search of tranquillity will find plenty of romantic
spots off the beaten track. Rue des Thermopyles, a cobblestone street, is an oasis of
calm and greenery in the 14th arrondissement, offering a glimpse of a bucolic side to
Paris … like the Cité Florale in the 13th, where even the street names – “Orchidées,
Volubilis, Mimosas, Glycines, Iris, Liserons” – evoke the fragrance of flowers. Rue
Crémieux, a stone’s throw from the Gare de Lyon, provides a colourful excursion for
people with a taste for the unusual. And then there’s the Square de Montsouris,
formerly inhabited by several artists, with its houses draped in wisteria and ivy.
In love on the Seine riverbanks
The quaysides around the two islands of Ile Saint Louis and Ile de la Cité that form the
very ‘heart’ of Paris are ideal places to stroll together, the most romantic spot being
the charming little public garden the Square du Vert-Galant, at the tip of the Ile de la
Cité. Most of the section of the left bank of the Seine has also been given over to
pedestrians since the summer of 2013. Remember the legendary screen stars Audrey
Hepburn and Cary Grant in the romantic comedy and thriller Charade. And do admire
the sun setting on the water from the steps in front of the Musée d’Orsay. The bridges
also appeal to couples. Could it be because their arches symbolize an alliance? Or
because the water flowing under them carries with it the wildest of promises?
According to tradition, lovebirds should kiss and make a wish under the Pont Marie,
nicknamed ‘lovers’ bridge’.

Up in Montmartre
The Pigalle and Montmartre neighbourhoods are associated with the Paris of
promiscuous behaviour – revues at the Moulin Rouge, lively bars and sex shops –
but further up, from the flights of steps on Montmartre hillside, lovebirds can
enjoy an enchanting view of the city. In the little public garden next to Place des
Abbesses, the ‘I love you’ wall is inscribed with some one thousand declarations of
love in more than 300 languages! In the daytime, couples can have their portrait
painted by the artists in Place du Tertre, or their initials embroidered on an offcut
at the Marché Saint-Pierre textile market.

Embracing on a public bench
Park benches in public parks and
gardens in Paris are ideal for
whispering sweet nothings. Some of
those in the Tuileries Gardens are
next to the sensual statues by Maillol
… Historically, this garden has always
been a prime location for libertine
behaviour. The wide alleys were once
the theatre of love and games of
chance. Exchange kisses at a
vertiginous height in the Temple of
Sibyl, perched on a rocky summit in
the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, or in
the dark in the cave below with its stalagmites. Embrace sedately near the Fontaine
Médias in the Jardin du Luxembourg, kiss like the ancient Romans in the Arènes de
Lutèce and canoodle above street level in the gardens of the Coulée Verte. In cold
weather, the tropical environment of the Serres d’Auteuil is a good place to be, as are
the hothouses in the Jardin des Plantes. And for the ‘secret’ atmosphere of a romantic
19th century garden, there are the gardens of Rohan and Fontenay at the National
Archives with umbrella pine trees, gloriettes and topiary.

Put together a funny lovey-dovey itinerary
For an offbeat and romantic itinerary, pick up a map of the city and follow ‘inspiring’
street names. You could start out at Passage du Désir, in the 10th arrondissement, and
then on to rue de la Fidélité, only a short distance away, leading to ... rue de Paradis!
Or you could walk down rue de la Gaieté (14th) and rue de la Félicité (17th).
Newlyweds could explore rue Monsieur (7th), and go on to rue Mademoiselle (15th)
before joining rue Madame (6th), and perhaps continue on to the nearby rue
Princesse. To put an end to a lovers quarrel, nothing could be better than rue de la
Paix! In love, the language of flowers is particularly rich. To discover the secret
corners of Paris, take a walk along the quai aux Fleurs (4th), rue des Rosiers (4th) then
rue des Camélias (14th) before losing yourself in the utterly charming Cité des Fleurs
(17th). Optional streets: rue des Glycines, rue des Iris and rue des Orchidées (13th),
rue des Primevères (11th) boulevard des Capucines (9th).
Explore the covered shopping arcades
With their high glass roofs, eclectic boutiques and old-fashioned charm, the covered
arcades of Paris are full of timeless charm that is conducive to a romantic stroll, away
from the noise of the city. The most refined are the Galeries Vivienne and Colbert,
with their neo-classical decor. The Passages Jouffroy and Verdeau will delight those
who like collector’s items. At the far end of Passage Jouffroy, the charming Hôtel
Chopin with its old-fashioned decor offers a bird’s-eye view of Paris. The perfect
hideaway for a romantic weekend! The Passage du Grand Cerf and the Galerie Vero

Romantic visits, with or without a guide
Paris is an ideal place for gazing at fabulous sights together. An outing can be instructive
with Paris As You Like It: the tour guide takes visitors around the French capital’s most
emblematic monuments. Delpine Lanvin offers walks in the footsteps of famous Parisian
couples, while the agency 1 Day in Paris runs ‘love tours’ of Montmartre hill, the Seine
riverbanks and Paris bridges in an authentic 2CV car. Suggestive paintings, sensual
sculptures, cheeky bronze statues ... Museums hide many a work of art to make visitors
blush. Bruno de Baeque invites spectators to admire ‘the loveliest bottoms’ on show at
the Louvre and Orsay; he also organizes a meet-up at 10pm at Place de la Concorde for
an ‘around midnight’ nocturnal tour of Paris. At Pigalle, the Musée de l’Erotisme presents
an artistic and historic approach to eroticism. In the New Athens district, the Musée de la
Vie Romantique houses a collection of souvenirs and objects relating to the writer George
Sand and the painter Ary Scheffer. At the Musée Rodin, enamoured couples can perform
their version of Rodin’s The Kiss, and be moved by the works of Rodin’s lover Camille
Claudel and her tragic destiny. Other romantic icons: the Lady and the Unicorn tapestry
at the Musée de Cluny and the painting of Romeo and Juliet at the little Musée Delacroix.

Seats for two
The dim lighting in cinema auditoriums creates a romantic atmosphere for couples in
love. An opportunity for French kissing or stolen kisses. At the MK2 Bibliothèque and
MK2 Quai-de-Loire cinemas, couples in love can nestle in each other’s arms in a cosy
red two-seater armchair (without arm rests). Red also, but in leather, the sofas of the
Théâtre Ciné 13, in the romantic Butte Montmartre neighbourhood, have been
specially designed so that couples can spend their evening entwined. After the film, at
the restaurant ‘Sur un arbre perché’, couples can canoodle on a swing, and book a
shiatsu massage for some joint pampering.

ROMANTIC MODES OF TRANSPORT
Paris aboard the iconic 2 CV
For a romantic, atypical and quintessentially French escapade, a tour in a 2 CV is not
to be missed. Either as a convertible or with a glass roof, the legendary Citroën car is
the ideal form of transport to see Paris! One to three-hour tours are available and
excursions include a visit, a stop for something to eat or drink, and may be on a variety
of themes: Paris by night, legendary or less well known Paris, romantic Paris, cinema
Paris, trip to Versailles, etc.

A ride in a horse-drawn carriage
A ride in a horse-drawn carriage in Paris remains a magical experience. Lulled by the
clip-clop of horses’ hooves on the cobbles, you can enjoy a leisurely outing either in a
simple carriage, or in a Cinderella-style carriage for two to four people.

Pedicabs, tuk-tuks and vespas
Inspired by Asian rickshaws, pedicabs and tuk-tuks are the new ways of getting
around! With sheer muscle power alone, the driver of a pedicab or tricycle can travel
as fast as a bus, and of course there are no crowds. Electrically assisted, the tuk-tuk
is a taxi bike. For an original excursion, Paris by scooter offer sightseeing tours of

Cruising on the Seine
There’s nothing quite as romantic as inviting your beloved for a dinner cruise or
sightseeing cruise along the Seine to
admire the most beautiful monuments
in Paris. The restaurant boats of La
Marina de Paris serve refined cuisine
made from fresh market produce; the
Bateaux Parisiens offer outstanding
views from their all-glass dining room,
not forgetting the famous BateauxMouches. For that special occasion,
there is River Limousine or Seine
Avenue which offer private cruises
aboard luxurious craft, designed
similarly to the wooden vessels on the
canals of Venice. Green River offers original little pontoon boats that can also be
privately hired for a romantic getaway; and then there’s My Paris River with its
floating lounges. The guinguette spirit has reached the Seine with the Belle Vallée, a
paddle-boat with an accordionist on board every Thursday for a lively musical boat
trip. Finally, cruises along the Saint-Martin Canal, passing through locks and swing
bridges, will appeal to visitors eager to spot reminders of bygone popular and
bohemian Paris. For a unique experience, the VIP Paris Yacht Hotel offers overnight
accommodation in one of its cabins after a dinner cruise on the Seine. Vedettes du
Pont Neuf organizes concerts on the Seine and champagne-tasting cruises, for musical
moments and sparkling fun! Or you could enjoy a dreamy getaway in the Boudoir de
Serendipity, a charming barge & breakfast moored at Asnières-sur-Seine just outside
Paris. But if it’s thrills you’re after, try a speedboat ride on the Seine, between Pont
de la Gare and eastern Paris.

SWEET AFTERNOONS
Tea rooms and spa
On a cold winter’s day, it is nice to enjoy a drink and a delicious cake or pastry in one
of the capital’s many tea rooms. Surprisingly enough, some of them have a spa, a pool
or massage rooms! Open to both men and women some days of the week, these are
absolute havens of peace and refinement. Belle époque decor and a hot chocolate at
Angelina, mint tea and oriental delights in the exotic setting of the Grande Mosquée de
Paris, or macaroons at Ladurée, on the Champs-Elysées. At the Pâtisserie des Rêves, you
can enjoy updated classics by maestro Philippe Conticini. At Rose Bakery 2, organic teas
and smoothies team up well with the scones, carrot cake or lemon polenta cake. And
for a traditional tea ceremony, go to Jugetsudo, at Saint- Germain-des-Prés, a Japanese
tea house reputed for the excellent quality of its green tea. Housed in a former art deco
swimming pool, Le Plongeoir at Hermès boutique is a prominent address. Many starred
restaurants and upscale hotels also offer gourmet mid-afternoon tea.

EVENING OUT JUST FOR THE TWO OF US
Paris fizzes: champagne!
George Sand wrote that champagne is a great help. To seal your love for one another or
just to be romantic, nothing can replace the magic of champagne. The oldest bar in Paris
devoted to this festive drink is Le Dokhan’s, at the Radisson Blu hotel, near to Trocadéro.
Wood-panelling, mirrors and candles make this a classy place. At the Hôtel de Sezz, near
to Passy, La Grande Dame is devoted to Veuve Clicquot champagne. And, the famous
Flûte Bar from New York has a cosy intimate address in Paris, near to Place de l’Etoile.
The champagne bar on the third floor of the Eiffel Tower is an ideal place for a ‘heady’
toast to happiness, like the terrace of the Tour Montparnasse. At Saint-Germain-des-Prés,
Dilettantes has 130 different champagnes, and a bar and a cellar for tastings. Finally,

Restaurants with a view
In Paris, there is no shortage of up in the air restaurants! The Eiffel Tower is obviously
one of the top ones. At a height of 125 metres, the refined menu at the Jules Verne
created by Alain Ducasse provides a gastronomic overview of the city. The Tour d’Argent,
overlooking the Seine and Notre-Dame, needs no introduction. Devised by Philippe
Starck, the bar of the Kong on the 5th floor of a Haussmannian building offers a superb
view of the Pont-Neuf and the Seine. Wonderful views of Paris can also be had from the
terrace of the Maison Blanche, the roof of the Raphaël hotel, the rooftop restaurant Les
Ombres at the Musée du Quai-Branly, the Georges at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the
Zyriad by Noura on the 9th floor of the Institut du Monde arabe, and the Benkay, a gem
of Japanese cooking, on the 4th floor of the Hôtel Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel. Over towards
Oberkampf, the roof terrace Le Perchoir, on the 7th floor, has a restaurant tucked away
on the 6th, while Ciel de Paris on the 56th floor of the Tour Montparnasse lords it over
the city.

The charm of a Guinguette atmosphere
In the heart of the Buttes Chaumont
park, the guinguette-style cafe Rosa
Bonheur, housed in a listed building, is
a very popular spot for dancing on fine
summer evenings along with people
from the local area. A few stops from
the Pont Alexandre III, the fixed barge
named ‘Rosa Bonheur sur Seine’ is a
great place to relax. Even more
unusual, the Chalet des Iles, on the
banks of a lake in the Bois de
Boulogne, offers a bucolic setting in
summer and a cosy setting in winter
with its lovely fireplace. There is also the additional charm of having to get to this
secret haven by boat. Not far away, visitors can also venture onto the Ile de la Jatte in
Neuilly-sur-Seine for dinner at the very traditional Guingette de Neuilly, or the
restaurant ‘Les Pieds dans l’eau’, which has an enormous terrace overlooking the Seine.

A last tango in Paris
What could be more romantic than ballroom dancing? There are several places in Paris
you can go to tango, salsa, waltz, etc. At La Bellevilloise, you can have lessons to learn
the tango, the swing or even the lindy hop, from the 1920s. At La Casa del Tango, people
dance as they did in the most romantic times of the past and in a very Parisian spirit. And
for beginners, some places like the Théâtre de Verre offer classes a few hours before the
dances organized at weekends, as well as flamenco and modern dance lessons. On
Sundays, don’t miss the 100 per cent Dominican Republic atmosphere and bachata
dancing lessons on the Nix Nox barge.

LOVING NIGHTS
Love hotels
The aptly named Hôtel Amour, in the South Pigalle district, has 20 guest rooms
decorated on the theme of love, as well
as a pretty leafy terrace. Montmartre
Mon amour is a 4-star hotel devoted to
the eternal, sincere, passionate love
affairs of couples like Edith Piaf and
Marcel Cerdan or Paul Verlaine and
Arthur Rimbaud. The hotel Les Plumes,
with the characteristic atmosphere of a
19th-century boarding house, has named
some of its guest rooms after famous
lovers of the time, including George
(Sand) and Alfred (de Musset), Juliette
(Récamier) and Victor Hugo … At Jules & Jim, named after Truffaut’s film, the guest
rooms overlook Parisian rooftops or paved courtyards and have an arty atmosphere
with huge portrait photos. At the hotel Sezz, with its designer interiors, a discrete
draw is in fact a ‘sexy mini bar’. The hotel Vice Versa by designer Chantal Thomass also
plays on sensuality on the theme of the seven deadly sins! And then there is the Grey
Hôtel, with 33 cosy, elegant rooms.

Hotel room numbers to note
On a discreet street close to the Jardin du Luxembourg is One by the Five, an annexe
of the Five Hotel, an exceptional suite with a bedroom where the bed does not touch
the floor … for a night of weightlessness. At the Seven Hotel in the heart of the Latin
Quarter, the Sublime suite with its round suspended bed and picture-perfect decor is a
cosy and genuinely sublime cocoon! Another option: the suite Lovez Vous with its
terrace equipped with a Jacuzzi for two … There is also a Jacuzzi in the Dream Catcher
suite at the Hôtel Legend and on the terraces of the two suites on the roof of the Hôtel
Félicien, decorated by Ted Lapidus. At the Hôtel du Petit-Moulin tucked away in the
Marais, the room 303 has a ceiling mirror just above the bed. At the Hôtel Angely, with
its chic boudoir decor, the Diamond Lovers is a small love nest with sparkling decor
perched on the top floor. At the Hôtel Paradis, the suite of the same name, tucked
away under the rooftops, offers a view of Sacré Coeur … A romantic swim together,
just the two of you? This is possible at L’Hôtel, rue des Beaux-Arts, which on request,
enables clients to privately hire its lower ground floor swimming pool surmounted by a
vault. The Hidden Hôtel, a stone’s throw from the Arc de Triomphe, has one
extraordinary suite with a yoga wall! Using the harnesses on the wall, couples can do a

Palatial in style
Reserved for the greatest occasions, palaces incarnate the essence of luxury. Some are
legendary, like Le Meurice, the Ritz (to open in autumn 2015) or the Four Seasons George
V. Others offer more contemporary decor, like the Royal Monceau Raffles or the
Mandarin Oriental. The opening of the first French address by the Peninsula group,
within the former hotel Majestic near the Arc de Triomphe, in summer 2014 took luxury
to new heights. On Chaillot hill, the Asian luxury hotel brand Shangri-La is housed in the
Palais d’Iéna, the former residence of Prince Roland Bonaparte. Its guest rooms offer
wonderful views of the Eiffel Tower.

Hôtels particuliers
Paris’s hôtels particuliers (former private mansion houses) are veritable little palaces
set in magnificent gardens, and contribute to the city’s unique charm. Although some
of them have been turned into museums, like the Hôtel Salé, which houses the Musée
Picasso, others have been transformed into luxury Hotels. In the 16th arrondissement,
the Hôtel Saint-James offers 48 chic guest rooms and suites with the atmosphere of a
private family residence. A stone’s throw from the Champs Elysées, the Hôtel
Marignan boasts a superb art deco facade and minimalist designer interiors. More
confidential, the Hôtel Particulier a large Directoire-style mansion on the heights of
Montmartre has five suites, a large garden and a cocktail bar titled the Très

Extraordinary bed & breakfast accommodation
More personalized than most hotel rooms in the same price category, some B&Bs are
absolute gems. Meeting the French has made a highly selective list of the capital’s finest
ones: with patio, Gothic turret, on a barge, etc. Alcôves & Agapes specializes in rooms
of character and charm, all situated in exceptional places (Haussmann apartment,
artist’s studio, loft, house with garden, etc). Bed & Break France also has some
wonderful accommodation. Paris-Oasis is a delightful guest house on the slopes of
Montmartre, with five apartments, a covered swimming pool and a terrace. On a zanier
note, Chez Bertrand offers fun and colourful accommodation in the saint-Ouen flea
market neighbourhood. The bedroom titled Loft is designed to resemble a car park, with
an authentic 2CV car transformed into a bed in the middle! And for a night right in the
heart of the Marais, Bonne Nuit Paris offers a welcoming family home with several guest
rooms, some with exposed beams. A typical Parisian neighbourhood experience.

Indulge your sweet tooth
Confectionery, a symbol of temptation and pure delight, is an ideal gift for Valentine’s
Day. Sweets and chocolates for everyone to share. But not just any kind! Those from A
la Mère de Famille have been popular since 1761. Sweets from Fouquet’s are a favourite
with children and adults. Maiffret is renowned for its chocolates and fruit jellies.
Macaroons are still all the trend, and Pierre Hermé’s have some truly surprising flavours
(jasmine, foie gras, white truffle, etc.). Also to try, the amazing macaroon chocolates:
real chocolates with a macaroon centre. The Belgian chocolatier Pierre Marcolini
presents timeless collections and ephemeral creations of biscuits, pralines, truffles,
palet biscuits and other delicious things in his two Parisian shops. The concept store Un
dimanche à Paris, devoted to chocolate, has a shop, restaurant, and tea room, and gives
cooking lessons.

DECLARATIONS WITH A DIFFERENCE
Proposing in Paris
Valentine’s Day is the opportunity to tell and/or remind your beloved how much you
adore them. It may even be the ideal time to make a marriage proposal. So, do it in
style. Specialist agencies have imagined the most incredible scenarios: a shower of
roses, projection of a declaration of love at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, on the wings
of a plane or an advertising van; delivery of a love letter by a dove or a statue from
the Musée Grévin ... All that remains is to say ‘yes’. Even if you are already married, it
is wonderful to renew your vows in the world’s most romantic city! For an original
declaration, the vintage decor of the Bus Bleu, a delightful Renault bus dating back to
1958, is a great option. And most unusual, the revamped maritime containers Zzz
installed on the Berges de Seine may be booked for an hour and a half and are sure to
surprise!

The non-marriage proposal
To be different from the rest, wait until September to declare your love in an amusing
way. In a tribute to the famous song by George Brassens (La non-demande en mariage),
sweethearts can express their love in front of the mayor and in public during the nonmarriage proposal ceremony, which takes place every year during the grape harvest at
Montmartre: ‘I have the honour of not asking you to marry me’.
