Gerry
a été récompensé pour ses qualités d’enseignant et
d’orateur. Il a remporté l’OCTAL/Vice-Chancellor’s Award for
Outstanding Contribution to Teaching & Learning (prix du
recteur pour contribution exceptionnelle en enseignement et en
apprentissage) pour l’année 2000; enfin, il a été le premier
lauréat, pour 2001, du ACE Teaching Excellence Award, de
Nouvelle-Galles du Sud; et deux fois finaliste pour le prix
australien d’enseignement universitaire. Il a reçu tout récemment
une citation Carrick pour sa contribution à l’apprentissage des
étudiants.
Gerry compte revenir au Canada en juin avec sa femme Kellinde
et leurs enfants, Gérard et Sophie, pour honorer le poste de
président (recteur) du Collège universitaire St. Mary’s à Calgary.
Ce collège fut fondé en 1985 en tant que collège catholique d’arts
libéraux affilié à l’Université de Calgary. En annonçant la
nomination de Gerry, Joe Ladouceur, président du Conseil des
gouverneurs, a déclaré : « Aujourd’hui, nous assistons à
l’aboutissement d’une recherche d’envergure internationale
entreprise pour trouver un nouveau leader à notre institution.
Cette recherche nous a amené à choisir un candidat idéal, un
homme dont les titres et qualifications universitaires sont
impeccables, et dont les qualités de leadership et la vision vivante
et novatrice entraîneront notre collège dans une nouvelle ère de
croissance et de développement. »

Gerry
TURCOTTE is Associate Provost
and Executive Dean of the College of Arts
& Sciences at the University of Notre
Dame, Australia. He is Immediate PastPresident of the Australasian Council of
Deans of Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences (DASSH), Past-President of the
Association for Canadian Studies in
Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ),
and Former Secretary of the International
Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS).
He is the author and editor of 14 books including the novel Flying
in Silence which was shortlisted for The Age Book of the Year in
2001 and Border Crossings: Words & Images both published by
Brandl & Schlesinger. He is also the author of three collections of
poetry: Neighbourhood of Memory (Dangaroo), Winterlude (Brandl
& Schlesinger) and Hauntings: the ‘Varuna’ Poems (Five Islands
Press). His edited works include Jack Davis: The Maker of History
(Harper Collins), Writers in Action (Currency), Masks, Tapestries,
Journeys (CRITACS), Canada-Australia: Towards a Second
Century of Partnership with Kate Burridge and Lois Foster
(Carleton University Press) and Compr(om)ising Post/colonialisms:
Challenging Narratives & Practices, with Greg Ratcliffe
(Dangaroo). His most recent publications include Peripheral Fear:
Transformations of the Gothic in Canadian and Australian Fiction
(Peter Lang: New York) and Unsettled Remains: Canadian
Literature & the Postcolonial Gothic, co-edited with Cynthia
Sugars (Wilfrid Laurier University Press) and shortlisted for the
Gabrielle Roy Prize for Literary Criticism.
Gerry is also an award-winning teacher and public speaker. He is
the winner of the 2000 OCTAL/Vice-Chancellor’s Award for
Outstanding Contribution to Teaching & Learning; an inaugural
winner of the 2001 New South Wales Government/ACE Teaching
Excellence Award; and a two-time nominee for the Australian
University Teaching Awards. He was most recently awarded a
Carrick Teaching Citation for Contributions to Student Learning.
Gerry is returning to Canada in June with his wife Kellinde and
children Gerard and Sophie to take up the position of President
(Vice-Chancellor) of St Mary’s University College, Calgary.
St. Mary’s College was founded in 1985 as a Catholic Liberal Arts
College affiliated with the University of Calgary. Joe Ladouceur,
the Chairman of the Board of Governors, in announcing Gerry’s
appointment said, “Today is the culmination of an extensive
international search for a new leader at St. Mary’s, which has
resulted in the selection of an ideal candidate, a man with
impeccable academic credentials, outstanding leadership qualities
and a bold and creative vision to take St. Mary’s into a new era of
growth and development.”

