The history of Moroccan Aerospace industry dates back to the 1950’s with expertise being developed in the field of aircraft maintenance for civil and military
aviation. In 1951, today Airbus created Maroc Aviation subsidiary, operating at this
time in the military business with Morocco, and became in 1993 a Sogerma plant
developing new activities in the manufacturing of seats, harnesses and metallic assembly of parts. The creation of Royal Air Maroc in 1957, considered today among
the major regional airline companies in Africa, has fostered the trend of developing
MRO capabilities for its own fleet. In 1999, Royal Air Maroc and Snecma Safran
Group create a Joint Venture – SMES - for engine maintenance and repair, which
confirmed Morocco’s capacity to develop know-how in this field, with qualified and
certified technicians. This first plant of Safran Group in Morocco was just a start
to the Group’s development in the Kingdom, with 7 subsidiaries today employing
around 3000 people: Aircelle, Labinal, Morpho, Safran Engineering Services, Matis
(JV of Boeing & Labinal) Sagem and Snecma. Snecma Morocco attracted the first
“typical’ French SME operating in precision machining called Le Piston Français
(SERMP), which is today a leader in precision machining field with merely 200 employees.
Since then, more and more companies started setting up their business in Morocco. From 2000 to 2015, more than 110 companies operating in aerospace industry
established themselves in Morocco, employing 11 000 qualified employees. The
trend was fostered with a dedicated industrial zone, The Aeropole - next to Casablanca International Airport which belongs to ONDA - the National Airports Organization. The availability of land for companies, and relatively at affordable price,
was key to the attractiveness of Morocco for foreign investors. During this period
of time, Safran Group played a key role in the booming of aerospace industry in the
country because it set up a business in major fields of aerospace industry, helping
to the development of a diversified and more integrated supply chain and attracting
Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers.
Other major actors have played a key role in the development of the supply chain
besides Safran Group and Sogerma. Tier 1 suppliers such as DAHER, Zodiac Aerospace, Thales, Esterline, and more recently Bombardier, Stelia, United Technologies UTAS - RFM, Eaton, Alcoa Fastening Systems and well referenced SME’s in
aerospace industry have consolidated even more the aerospace industry.
Among the main reasons that position Morocco among the most competitive aerospace industries is
the proximity to Europe, only 14 Kms from Spain, which in logistic terms means 2 days by truck from
Casablanca to Toulouse and only one day to Spain, 2-3 hours by flight to major capitals in Europe with
a well-developed air hub in Med V International Airport of Casablanca. The political stability of this
4 centuries-old monarchy and the history that links Morocco to Europe, along with its demography
composed in majority of youth, are other factors that motivate the investor’s decision.
In the mid 2000’s, regarding the potential Morocco represents for investors in the industrial field, the
Government launched the National Pact for Industrial Emergence, erecting aerospace industry among
the “Global Industries” to develop along with the automotive, electronic, and IPO/BPO sectors. It
comprises a set of incentives and major structural projects to support the development of the industry.
With the set of incentives offered to investors by the Moroccan government, the supply chain enriched
with OEM’s, Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, the proximity to Europe, Morocco is clearly becoming the ideal place
to develop business for long-term competitiveness and growth.
Incentives for investors :
- Financial subsidy equal to 15% of total investment (with conditions on number of employees and
investment size), can reach up to 30% under specific conditions.
- Financial contribution for training costs: 6000 Euros per engineer and 2000 Euros per technician
- Corporate tax exemption for 5 years – 17.5% afterwards
- For Free Zone Areas: tax free for 5 years and 8.75% afterwards, with exemption on custom duties
- Exemption from VAT for import of new equipment during the first two years of creation
- A set of measure to support the growth of SME’s in technological investments
Structural Projects
The projects that are intended to support the growth of the “Global Industries” are a training center for
technicians and an offshore industrial area for each industry. For the aerospace sector, the main projects
are IMA – the Moroccan Aerospace Institute, the dedicated training-education center. Midparc, adjacent
to IMA and the Aeropole, is the Free Zone ‘Integrated Industrial Platform’ located near Mohamed V
Airport in Nouasser-Casablanca. It extends over 140 hectares and has capacity of 330 plants, dedicated
to aerospace industry, defense, security, on board electronics, and high tech industries. Its objective
is to support companies in their International growth at the best cost and in the best conditions of
competitiveness, quality and efficiency. Midparc has been inaugurated on September 2013 and already
hosts Bombardier Aerospace, Eaton, Aerolia Airbus, and Alcoa Fastening Systems, along with other
SME’s. Aeropole ONDA is also an attractive industrial zone where major companies are located, with
available land inside major airports which can host MRO companies and other related industries.

IMA - The Moroccan Aerospace Institute is a leadingedge training-education center whose goal is to
