BUT HE WANTS MORE THAN JUST LOCAL RECOGNITION: HE’D LIKE TO MAKE HIS COMPANY AN INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS. JEAN GRAND-MAÎTRE A DONNÉ UN SOUFFLE NOUVEAU À L'ALBERTA BALLET. MAIS IL NE S’ARRÊTE PAS LÀ: LE CHORÉGRAPHE QUÉBÉCOIS VISE MAINTENANT LA RECONNAISSANCE INTERNATIONALE! By | Par Luc Boulanger “I FEEL GOOD ABOUT BEING HERE in Calgary.” It’s a somewhat surprising declaration coming from a choreographer who has spent the better part of the last decade travelling between the cultural capitals of the world. Like many eastern Canadians, Jean Grand-Maître had some preconceived notions about the province before accepting the position of artistic director of the Alberta Ballet in the summer of 2002. Taking the job was a big gamble. « JE ME SENS BIEN À MA PLACE ICI à Calgary. DESTINATIONS 9 panorama Jean Grand-Maître Photo: Ian Karaboliev PROFILE PORTRAIT First, he had to leave behind a jet-setting international career that had allowed him to work with prestigious companies such as the ballet of the Paris Opera, the Scala Theatre in Milan, and the Stuttgart Ballet. The eternal guest artist had to become a senior manager of a single company—with a full slate of administrative work. Finally, moving to a place better known for rodeo than classical dance carried the risk of severe homesickness for a montrealer like Grand-Maître. It turns out that he adores his adoptive city. “I’m surprised that I like it so much here. But it’s a great time to be living in Calgary—the city is experiencing an economic and cultural boom. There are plenty of new bars, restaurants, and art galleries. And, as an artist, it’s great to see that people really enjoy the creative arts, and that there are many potential patrons.” With 26 full-time dancers from 11 countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia (and of course Canada), the Alberta Ballet is the country’s third-largest classical dance company after the Toronto-based National Ballet and Montreal’s Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. The Alberta Ballet is based in Calgary, with a satellite office in Edmonton. Apart from staging shows in Alberta’s two largest cities (see Agenda, page 65), the director hopes that the company will spend more time on the road in Canada and abroad. “And for that to happen our dancers and repertoire have to be of comparable quality to those of troupes in major world cities,” he says. Jean Grand-Maître also wants to shatter the stereotypical view of classical ballet. “It’s possible to do Swan Lake with a 21st-century vision. Art needs to be living, regardless of the time or the idiom.” What does the future hold? At 42, the choreographer hopes to lead the Alberta Ballet for several more years. He would like to build a show on the music of Handel, a composer whose work he finds quite contemporary despite its age. Finally, he’s looking forward to some rest and relaxation among the nearby natural wonders. “The Rockies are right in my backyard, about an hour’s drive away. It’s great! » 2 panorama TRENDS TENDANCES Lean Cuisine minceur JANET AND GRETA PODLESKI (“TWO POLISH SISTERS FROM ST. They’ve been reviewed by People magazine (“Janet and Greta Podleski whip up a wacky recipe for success”) and have appeared on major TV networks, including CNN. Now the authors take a stand against fad dieting with Eat, Shrink & Be Merry!, a celebration of “great tasting food that won’t go to from your lips to your hips.” Delivered in the sisters’ trademark wisecracking style, it’s a treasure trove of great recipes and friendly tips—with a mission. Janet Podleski says they hope “to coax people over to a healthy lifestyle that’s permanent because it’s really enjoyable.” After all, the punning Podleski adds, “dieting is only wishful shrinking.” (Li Robbins) JANET ET GRETA PODLESKI, DEUX SŒURS D’ORIGINE POLONAISE DE ST. (Li Robbins) 12 DESTINATIONS panorama TRENDS TENDANCES Photo: AP Photo / Pat Wellenbach DA VINCI DIET Enjoy your daily bread Régime tout permis ALMOST TWO YEARS AFTER PUBLICATION, DAN BROWN’S BESTSELLER, THE DA VINCI CODE, REMAINS A HOT PHENOMENON. After the Atkins low-carb craze started to put an obvious dent in his sales, Stephen Lanzalotta, who owns an Italian bakery in Portland, Maine, drew inspiration from the “golden ratio” in the novel to prove that bread is an essential part of a healthy diet. Made up primarily of Mediterranean-style meals featuring fish, cheese, vegetables, meat, nuts, wine, and (of course) bread, the Da Vinci diet is, according to Lanzalotta, very much like the daily regime of the great artists and thinkers of the Renaissance. He explains the theory in his book, The Diet Code: Revolutionary Weight-Loss Secrets from Da Vinci and The Golden Ratio, slated for publication in April 2006. At last, a book that promises to make dieting palatable. (Laïla Maalouf) PLUS DE DEUX ANS APRÈS SA PARUTION, LE BEST-SELLER DE DAN BROWN CONTINUE D’EN INSPIRER PLUSIEURS.
