Master in Economics and Business
[1]The Master of Economics
and Business is being integrated into the Sciences Po School of Management and Innovation [1]
launched in October 2016.
Current students will continue studying in their original Master's programme.
Their programme may undergo a few alterations related to the School's organisation for the
2017/2018 academic year.
Working in the private sector, as a consultant, an entrepreneur or in a large multinational firm requires both a
broad knowledge in economics and an aptitude to master the modern tools of strategy, accounting, and
finance.
The Master in Economics and Business has been created to provide its students with those tools and put them in
the ideal position to successfully enter the job market in France or abroad. Graduates are prepared to work in a
variety of functions and business sectors as in the banking and finance industry, in consulting as well as in
multinational or smaller companies.
Sciences Po is the ideal institution to run such a program. First, it can guarantee that students obtain a sound
background in economics and finance, using the assets of a leading, growing and academically world
recognised Department of Economics and Finance. Second, one of the specificities of Sciences Po is that
students are well trained in professional presentation skills, both written and oral. Third, students are offered
the job placement services developed by Sciences Po's Department of Economics to guarantee first rate
professional outcomes for the students.
Key features
A two-years program providing a multidisciplinary approach
A wide range of elective courses allowing students to customise the programme to their own interests
A learning approach that includes both theory and practical applications, focusing on working group,
presentations and case studies
An international teaching environment with a diverse cohort of students

universities. Students usually spend the first year at Sciences Po and the second year at the partner university.

Program
[1]The Master of Economics
and Business is being integrated into the Sciences Po School of Management and Innovation [1]
launched in October 2016.
Current students will continue studying in their original Master's programme.
Their programme may undergo a few alterations related to the School's organisation for the
2017/2018 academic year.
Organization of the program
The master will be taught by a unique blend of academics and practitioners.
The courses in economics and data analysis are mostly taught by leading academic scholars, with international
experience including in major business schools. Students will learn the essential concepts relevant to pricing or
to the understanding of the world economy, but always with an applied bend, based for instance on cases
studies and professional skills acquisition strategy.
The management, finance, corporate strategy and accounting courses are taught by practitioners with
experience in teaching, bringing to the classroom their business experience.
The first semester [6] is aimed at acquiring the tools, with core courses in applied econometrics, accounting,
financial markets and managerial economics.
The second semester [7] is designed to start applying the tools, with core courses in applied macroeconomics,
corporate strategy, competition policy and financial analysis.
The third semester [8] allows students to specialise by choosing from applied and professional skills oriented
concentrations among Economics, Business, Finance and Banking, International Project Finance and others.
Each of the three semesters offers to students a wide range of elective courses allowing them to customize the
program to their own interests.
The final semester will be devoted to a compulsory internship (minimum of 14 consecutive weeks in France or
abroad) and the Grand Oral, Sciences Po's final individual oral examination.
Furthermore, students are encouraged to take a gap year between their first and second year to do two
internships in France or abroad (study abroad semesters are also offered). We have observed that this clearly
increases the quality of the job opportunities at the end of the program.

The CFA Certification Level 1
During the whole year, students will be trained to prepare and to obtain the CFA
Certification level 1.
The CFA Certification is the most widely known and respected investment credential in the world.
Employers recognize the CFA as a reliable way to differentiate the most qualified, up-to-date and determined
job applicants.
It provides the skills needed to succeed in the workplace and it demonstrates the persistence, flexibility and
hard work required of today's investment professionals. It also evolves to include new tools, ideas, frontier
concepts and lessons to reflect the dynamic and complex nature of the global investment profession.
If you want to work abroad, it is the perfect passport.
Through 96 hours compulsory classroom courses and training (48 hours in the first semester, 48 hours in the
second), you will get an outstanding success rate during the examination in May.
The CFA programme is made up of 10 modules:
Ethical and Professional standards
Quantitative Methods
Economics
Financial reporting and analysis
Corporate finance
Equity investments
Fixed income
Derivatives
Alternative investments
Portfolio management
The AMF Certification
The new AMF regulation requires that anyone who works with financial instruments
demonstrate a minimum level of knowledge. This regulation applies to employees of investment and retail
banking, asset management companies, brokerage companies or any Investment Services Provider (ISP) which
markets financial products or processes, e.g. mutual funds, and advises clients.
French legislation requires since January 30th, 2009 that: "The Investment Service Provider ensures that
individuals under its authority or work on its behalf are qualified and have a sufficient level of knowledge"
(General Regulations of the AMF, art. 313-7-3).
Through innovative pedagogy combined with classroom courses (24 hours during the first semester and 24
hours during the second), students will be trained by senior professionals in order to obtain this certified
examination.
Here are some modules of this Certification:
The back office
The institutional and regulation context in France, in Europe and abroad
The running and the organisation of the markets
Ethical practices and conformity

Financial instruments and risks
Market abuse regulation
The FRM Certification (FRM)
Within the last 10 years, the financial industry became increasingly concerned about
managing risk. The FRM offers the opportunity to show your skills in risk management and is proof that you
have had your knowledge validated by the leading organization in the field and in accordance to international
professional standards.
The FRM exam gives you the opportunity to become part of an elite group of skilled professionals, sought after
and employed by the leading financial institutions in the world.
The FRM has big differences but also big similarities with the CFA exam and these certifications are not mutually
exclusive. The biggest difference between the two certifications lies in the specialties offered by the
qualifications. While the CFA is more general in nature than the FRM as it concentrates on subjects that are
more general in application and ensures an understanding of many facets of the financial industry, the FRM
concentrates on more specific issues as it specifically focuses on risk management.
The course topics included in the FRM includes:
market risk measurement and management
credit risk management
risk management and investment
current financial market issues
Therefore The FRM has a tighter scope and offers more focused opportunities within the risk sectors of the
financial industry. The FRM opens doors to careers involving the management or assessment of risk within the
financial industry.
The UK Regulatory Certificate
This unit of the Capital Markets Programme of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI)
ensures candidates have an understanding of the regulations and legislation that underpin financial markets in
the conduct of investment business in the UK.
The Online preparation will cover the following elements:
The Regulatory Environment in the UK
The Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and Financial Services Act 2012
Associated Legislation and Regulation
The FCA Conduct of Business Sourcebook / Client Assets
Complaints and Redress
The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) is the examining body for this certificate. The
training will be completed Online with FitchLearning, a CISI Accredited Training Partner during semester 2.

Students testimonials
Valentina Khatib, Institutional Sales in Oddo&Cie, Fixed Income Sales & Trading (Graduated in
2015)
I obtained my bachelor degree in Economics from Stockholm, where I am originally from. After
completing my degree, I was eager to pursuit higher studies abroad. I was keen to join one of the leading
universities in Europe in social sciences and I was looking for a challenging programme that could provide me
with the necessary tools for the job market. The choice of master was to prepare me for careers inside the
financial industry. I was seeking a master that could give me solid understanding of the fundamental
quantitative tools in finance and global versatile view of the theoretical applied economics.
Axel Searle, M&A Valuations, PricewaterhouseCoopers Singapore (Graduated in 2015)
I am originally from Australia. I moved to Singapore when I was 15 years old where I studied at
the Australian International School. I then came to Sciences Po for my undergraduate degree at the Middle East
and Mediterranean campus in Menton. I spent my third year abroad at the American University in Dubai.
Émilie Dubuc, Consultant in Capgemini, Corporate Excellence & Transformation (Graduated in 2015)
I was born and raised in Montreal (Canada) and completed a bachelor degree in Finance &
Economics at HEC Montreal prior to Sciences Po. I chose the Master in Economics and Business because it
combined both the economic and finance competencies with large possibilities of career at the end. Also I liked
the fact it offered lectures and workshops in very different subjects given by the greatest teachers in Europe.

at BlackRock, supporting the use of their portfolio management system by external clients. After a few years, I
wanted to fulfil two personal goals I had at the time; moving abroad and continuing my studies.
Émilie Siebenborn, Corporate Finance Executive in Total S.A. (Graduated in 2016)
I entered the Master in Economics and Business in 2014, right after my Sciences Po
Undergraduate College degree at the Paris' campus and my exchange year at the Shanghai Jiao Tong
University, Shanghai, China. As I have always wanted to study Economics and Finance, the Departement of
Economics of Sciences Po emerged as an obvious choice. I choose the Master in Economics and Business which
has the great advantage of being taught in English and is more relevant with my career path that I expect to be
abroad.
Florent Lachaud, Strategy Consultant in OC&C Strategy Consultants (Graduated in 2016)
I entered the Master Economics and Business in September 2014. Before this experience, I had
taken the scientific « Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles », after which I went to AgroParisTech, an
engineering school where I majored in Environmental / Energy management and sciences.Willing to work as a
Strategy Consultant and – in the long run – in the energy industry, there was no better solution than completing
my hard scientific skills with a top-notch training in economics, finance, strategy etc. within this Master.
