It comprises Introductory, Basic and Advanced Levels, which are competency based and relate to the specific functions of each type of Leader. Additional training programs enhance the acquisition of further skills and knowledge. Scouts Australia’s Wood Badge Training Program conforms to the requirements of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), and also conforms to the Australian national standards that allow participants to earn VET qualifications. Wood Badge Training Program - Basic Level 17 – 19 April 2015; 24 – 26 July 2015; 23 – 25 October Course Cost: FREE The Basic Level comprises workbooks, in-service activities, seminars, and on the job practicum. Content includes components on leadership, Scouting knowledge, personal development, and a specific component relating to the participant’s role in Scouting. For Leader of Youth or specialist activities, content includes assisting with sectional organisation, management, programming and the outdoors. For Leader of Adults the focus is on management and organisational skills. On completion of Basic Level training, Leaders receive: • Scout Certificate of Adult Leadership • Gilwell Woggle • Certificate III in Business Wood Badge Training Program - Advanced Level 22 – 24 May and 3 – 5 July 2015 Course Cost: FREE Advanced Level training builds on the skills gained during Basic Level training. The training comprises workbooks, in-service activities, seminars, on the job practicum, personal development electives, a project, and a formal residential program. Participants are assigned a mentor (or Personal Leader Adviser). Advanced Level training occurs over a three-year period with approximately six days of formal training. Content covers the practical application of theories associated with leadership and management, Scouting knowledge, personal development, and a specific component relating to the participant’s role in Scouting. For Leader of Youth or specialist activities, content includes leadership at the advanced sectional organisation, management, programming, and the outdoors. For Leader of Adults the focus is on applying more complex management and organisational skills. The buddy system is used heavily at the event as is the Joey theme of Caring and Sharing this is a good way to get the Joey Scout to ‘Learn by Doing’. ANZAC Vigil 24 – 25 April 2015 Scouts first commenced a vigil around the State War Memorial in 1931. In 1933, it was decided that Rover Scouts (young men and women aged between 18 -25) would take over the duties of the ANZAC Eve Vigil, and despite requiring assistance from younger Scouts between 1940 to 1947 due to the Second World War, Rover Scouts have dutifully maintained their vigil every year since. The vigil sees teams of five or six Rovers maintain half hour shifts to guard the memorial from sundown on ANZAC eve till the start of the dawn service. This allows over 120 rovers to be involved overnight, and many stay on to form an honour guard during the King's Park dawn service itself. All members of Scouting are invited to the State War Memorial on ANZAC Eve to commemorate ANZAC Day and to watch the Rover Scouts stand guard. Joey Cub Day 9 May 2015 Joey Cub Day is a fun day with lots of activities for the Cub Scouts and Joey Scouts working together in their Groups and learning to have fun and experiences. Taking place at Whiteman Park the day includes visits to the museum, tractor museum, walk trails, train and tram rides, badge making. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend. Ticket to Life 20 Hour Famine 20 – 21 June 2015 Get together with your whole group and help other people. Don’t eat for 20 hours and feel the hunger that our scout friends in the Philippines and other places feel on a daily basis. Spend time with your mates and enjoy activities while making a difference to Scouting worldwide by raising money for this cause. Joey Campfire 22 August 2015 The Joey Campfire is two-hour event that is totally about having fun through singing. Around 250 Joey Scouts are expected to attend this annual outdoor event. Parents and siblings are encouraged to stay and join in the singing but must remain behind the Joey Scouts. JOTA-JOTI 17 – 18 October 2015 Jamboree-On-The-Air and Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTA-JOTI) are official international twin events of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). They are youth program events intended for young people in Scouting of all ages. Page 5 of 22 They enable and encourage Scouts around the world to communicate with one another by means of amateur radio and the internet, providing a fun and educational Scouting experience and promoting their sense of belonging to a worldwide Scout Movement. Joey Splash 14 November 2015 Joey Splash is fun in the water without going in but getting very wet. This event is run round robin style with all different water activities to promote water confidence, team building, aware of personal growth, environmental awareness. This action packed 50 minute program will have Joeys doing all kinds of fun things, such as dancing, being a mime, and testing out their acting skills. Most Six and Seconds attend the course and then take back the learnt skills to their pack and help out their Leaders. The program is set out in the Cub Leaders Handbook and being a National Award all criteria needs to be completed. The course is normally run over a weekend in various Districts with their Leaders also attending. Numerous sessions are run in leadership, problem solving, skills etc on a rotational basis. Cub Scout Event and Activity Calendar Anything is Possible Camp 30 December 2014 – 3 January 2015 Anything is Possible is a Joint camp with the Manila Ticket to Life Troop that Western Australia has sponsored to camp at Branch headquarters and enjoy a five day camp exploring Perth and making International Scout friends. Open to 10 year old Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts. Have-A-Go May to August 2015 Have-A-Go is an activity for Cubs with the idea of ‘learning by doing’ and having fun. Run during the winter months activities are generally run by the individual packs based on a chosen theme. Have-A-Go can be over a few Pack nights or even the term. Scitech Night 4 July 2015 The Scitech Discovery Centre features a number of regularly changing interactive exhibitions designed to inform and educate visitors on a number of subjects concerning science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Cub Scitech Night is held each year and is a fun night where Cubs from all over Western Australia can get together as a group and have fun using the equipment at Scitech. Most packs use public transport to attend, often having other activities before the event and dinner in town. Wide Game September to December 2015 The Wide Game is an outdoor activity run during the warmer months each year. Cubs normally have to search for hidden items, while their Leaders have the opportunity to surprise them during the activity. Normally occurring as a District or inter-District event, with over 100 Cubs the Wide Game is an activity not to be missed. JOTA-JOTI 17 – 18 October 2015 Jamboree-On-The-Air and Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTA-JOTI) are official international twin events of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). They are youth program events intended for young people in Scouting of all ages. They enable and encourage Scouts around the world to communicate with one another by means of amateur radio and the internet, providing a fun and educational Scouting experience and promoting their sense of belonging to a worldwide Scout Movement. Cubilee 7 November 2015 Cubilee is a fun filled day open to all Cub Packs in Western Australia with the intention of coming together and celebrate Scouting. During the day Cubs will travel around in small groups with adult supervision to various activities, including badge making, pushcart racing, making masks, biscuit decorating, traveling across rope bridges, and many more. Held in the Perth North Region, all activities are run by Leaders from within Scouting and a based around a central theme. Details on the 2015 theme will be made available closer to the event date. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend, thus learning what Scouting is all about. Cub Scout Puppet Making Night Page 8 of 22 Available upon request, bookings to [email protected] The Performing Arts team will assist your Cub Scouts to create their very own personalised sock puppet. All materials and guidance are included, and the participants get to keep their creation at the end of the night. Additional supervision may be required. Bookings essential as limited sessions are available. This activity costs $7 per Cub Scout. Cub Scout Performing Arts Program Available upon request, bookings to [email protected] Enjoy a fun filled evening of all things Performing Arts! This action packed 80 minute program will have Cub Scouts doing all kinds of fun things, such as dancing, being a mime, testing out their acting skills, and at the end of the night presenting a short Narrated Play. They can learn new skills that their Leaders may not have previous experience to teach them. By networking and using different Leaders we are able to give Scouts more variety in what they learn. Swanabout is the annual Scouts WA 30 hour sailing marathon on the Swan River. It is open to all Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders in Sea Scout Groups. This is an adventurous activity requiring a high level of sailing skill and navigation knowledge. Youth members sail circuits between Bases at SWAC (Scouts Water Activities Centre), Waylen Bay, Mosman Bay, Fremantle and Pelican Point. Sailing continues through the night. Yachts are tracked by GPS and the Bases monitor their progress by radio contact. Each base runs a fleet of Rescue Craft to support the activity. Scouts who are not members of a Sea Scout Group but who want to take part would need to contact their nearest Sea Scout Group and discuss. Orienteering Competition 29 March 2015 It is a fun day with an opportunity for your Scouts, Guides, Rangers and Venturers to use their compass and map reading skills to navigate and find various ‘control points’ in undulating Australian bush to score points towards a trophy. Have a patrol competition or pit your Leaders against the Scouts. Categories include Scouts with a Leader (adult); Scouts without a Leader; Venturers; Adults/Leaders/Rovers; and Families. Master Mariners Competition 2 – 3 May 2015 The Master Mariners Competition is an annual competition open to Scouts, Venturers and Rovers of Sea Scout Groups. Crews are tested on their skills and knowledge in areas such as Navigation, Knotting and Construction, Seamanship, Rowing, Sailing and Powerboating. Competition is of a very high standard and crews train hard to develop their skills. The event is sponsored and judged by members of The Company of Master Mariners. Ticket to Life Camp Manila 15 – 24 May 2015 Meet these amazing Scouts at their annual camp. We will travel through Singapore and go to Universal studios and Gardens By the Bay before arriving in Manila and camping with this troop at a Beach resort. Nighthawk 8 – 9 August 2015 An overnight orienteering event that involves Scouts navigating to activity bases over unfamiliar grounds. Teams of 4-8 Scouts vying for a yearly competition shield hike over approximately 11 kilometres, completing base activities run by Leaders to accumulate points. Scouts are issued co-ordinates and instructional maps enabling them to complete the course. Cargeeg Shield Challenge 18 – 20 September 2015 Selection for patrols to attend the camp is by patrols attending a prequalification camp within their district or region and the patrols are selected by the highest camping standards then are chosen to represent their troop in the Cargeeg Shield Camping Challenge. The Patrols are dropped off with their equipment and no Leaders or parents are to assist the patrols in setting up. The Patrols arrive Friday night to set up and opening parade is Saturday morning in full uniform and from this time forward the patrols are judged and scored on their camping standards. They are also given a initiative challenge with a set time and a predetermined set of instruction and are given a time frame to complete the challenge and may receive bonus points if completed successfully and on time. Maldives Camp October 2015 Scouts, Venturers and Rovers are invited to this exclusive invitational camp to be held on a coral Island in the Maldives with many water activities, village visits and much more. Script Writing Workshop 9 – 11 October 2015 Workshop Fees: $60 Over the course of one weekend, the necessary framework for a stage show will be created, characters brainstormed and a plot established. This will form the starting point for the creation of a stage show, which can then be further developed by the youth and may one day appear on a stage somewhere. This event is for Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts. Scout Youth Forum 11 October 2015 The Scout Youth Forum is an event where Scouts can come together to discuss in a group the issues that affect Scouts and devise ways to solve them. It is a forum where youth members can have their say without being limited to the constraints of a meeting setting, and it can be more relaxed and able to generate more candid and useful discussion. It enables all Scouts to give input, not just through their delegated Troop representatives and shows them the workings of Youth involvement and input while helping them see outcomes of their input. Singapore SG50 International Jamboree 14 – 22 November 2015 Invitational Jamboree for Scouts over 12 years and Venturer Scouts to attend this event with many other countries. Enjoy all that Singapore has to offer with a precamp tour followed by a truly International Jamboree. Page 12 of 22 Australian Jamboree 2016 3 – 14 January 2016 The 24th Australian Jamboree is being held at Cataract Scout Park in January 2016. Attendance at a Major National Event by a young person is not only a great experience but provides an enormous opportunity for personal development for those who attend - it is likely to be one of the highlights of their lives. The fun and magic of a Major National Event is the result of bringing together a large number of Scouts from all over Australia and the World to live and play together in a Scouting environment. The objective of all Major National Events is to provide young people with an active program that encourages participation and learning and that includes activities that stimulate their physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development both singularly and collectively that leads to character development. Rottnest Invasion To Be Confirmed The Rottnest Invasion has been running for a number of years and provides an opportunity for Scouts to participate in a weekend activity helping with the environment on Rottnest Island. Scouts travel to Rottnest on Friday and spend part of Saturday and part of Sunday helping the Rottnest Authority with environmental issues. Watch as in just 90 minutes your regular Scouts will transform in to various characters, and at the end of the night will deliver a show unlike any other. ScouTronics - Exploring Electronics This one-day course will introduce Scouts to electronics and to the world of microprocessors. Scouts will receive instruction in electrical safety, the safe use of tools, identification of electronic components, assembly and soldering of an electronic device. The course is designed for linking Scouts and new Venturers, to prepare them for such things as undertaking their Initiative and Expeditions badges. Venturer Leadership Course 17 – 19 April 2015; 4 – 6 December 2015 Course Cost $55 The Venturer Leadership Course is designed to enhance Venturers' emerging Leadership skills via a weekend course, which uses a combination of information, advice and discussions on various facets of Leadership backed up by practical Leadership opportunities that are provided through various activities that occur over the weekend course. After the completion of this course, Venturers are required to apply what they have learnt at the course, as a member of their own Unit's Council for a period of six months. Initiative Course 2 – 3 May 2015; 8 – 9 August 2015 Course Cost $25 The Initiative Course is designed to reinforce the hiking skills learnt at the Venturing Skills hike and to challenge Venturers to think outside the square. They complete a number of challenging activities in their Units, during the course of this hike, and each Venturer is marked individually on their participation in the activities. They do also need to show they have adequate camping/hiking/navigation skills as well. Mawson Scholarship in Leadership 6 – 10 July 2015; 28 September – 2 October 2015; 4 – 8 July 2016; 26 – 30 September 2016 The ‘Mawson Scholarship in Leadership’ is an advanced training program for Venturer Scouts aged 15 to 18 years. Conducted over five days, participants will receive instruction and practical training in teamwork, communication, decision-making and problem solving, conflict resolution, and event management. 24 participants will be selected from around Australia to attend the course. Each Branch identifies its most talented and passionate youth members with the potential as great ambassadors for Scouting. Each participant should have completed the Venturer Scout Leadership Course prior to attending the course. Participants should also hold a current leadership role or have recent leadership experience. The selection of participants will be managed by each Branch with the aim to select young leaders with the potential to enter dynamic leadership roles within their Branch. Kings Park International Games Day Meet the Filipino Scouts and spend the day playing games and making new International friends. 1 January 2015 Heaps Good Venture 2 – 13 January 2015 The 16th Australian Venture (AV2015 SA Heaps Good) will be held at Woodhouse Activity Centre, Adelaide, South Australia from 2nd to 13th January 2015. An Australian Venture is the major National youth event for the Venturer section of Scouts Australia. You get to meet other Venturers and Guides from all over Australia and around the world. For 10 days you will visit different areas of South Australia, try out activities and challenges you may have never dreamed of doing, and make friends for life! Ventechnology Camps 23 – 24 May; 27 – 28 June; 1 – 2 August; 15 – 16 August; 19 – 20 September 2015 Ventechnology is a series of five camps. Each camp will provide tuition and coaching in one of these: Linux, Building Android Apps, Learning and Developing Coding (Code Dojo),Programming and experimenting with Raspberry Pi, and an Amateur Radio Foundation License course. The activities will challenge and stimulate Venturers to develop or learn new Page 15 of 22 skills. Ventechnology is open to all Venturers. Participants will be camping in their own tents, and catering will be provided centrally. All program materials will be provided. Swanabout 7 – 8 March 2015 Swanabout is the annual Scouts WA 30 hour sailing marathon on the Swan River. It is open to all Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders in Sea Scout Groups. This is an adventurous activity requiring a high level of sailing skill and navigation knowledge. Youth members sail circuits between Bases at SWAC (Scouts Water Activities Centre), Waylen Bay, Mosman Bay, Fremantle and Pelican Point. Sailing continues through the night. Yachts are tracked by GPS and the Bases monitor their progress by radio contact. Each base runs a fleet of Rescue Craft to support the activity. Scouts who are not members of a Sea Scout Group but who want to take part would need to contact their nearest Sea Scout Group and discuss. Orienteering Competition 29 March 2015 It is a fun day with an opportunity for your Scouts, Guides, Rangers and Venturers to use their compass and map reading skills to navigate and find various ‘control points’ in undulating Australian bush to score points towards a trophy. Have a patrol competition or pit your Leaders against the Scouts. Categories include Scouts with a Leader (adult); Scouts without a Leader; Venturers; Adults/Leaders/Rovers; and Families. ANZAC Vigil 24 – 25 April 2015 Scouts first commenced a vigil around the State War Memorial in 1931. In 1933, it was decided that Rover Scouts (young men and women aged between 18 -25) would take over the duties of the ANZAC Eve Vigil, and despite requiring assistance from younger Scouts between 1940 to 1947 due to the Second World War, Rover Scouts have dutifully maintained their vigil every year since. The vigil sees teams of five or six Rovers maintain half hour shifts to guard the memorial from sundown on ANZAC eve till the start of the dawn service. This allows over 120 rovers to be involved overnight, and many stay on to form an honour guard during the King's Park dawn service itself. All members of Scouting are invited to the State War Memorial on ANZAC Eve to commemorate ANZAC Day and to watch the Rover Scouts stand guard. Master Mariners Competition 2 – 3 May 2015 The Master Mariners Competition is an annual competition open to Scouts, Venturers and Rovers of Sea Scout Groups. Crews are tested on their skills and knowledge in areas such as Navigation, Knotting and Construction, Seamanship, Rowing, Sailing and Powerboating. Competition is of a very high standard and crews train hard to develop their skills. The event is sponsored and judged by members of The Company of Master Mariners. Venturer Youth Forum 3 May 2015 The Venturer Youth Forum is an event where Venturers can come together to discuss in a group the issues that affect Venturing and devise ways to solve them. It is a forum where youth members can have their say without being limited to the constraints of a meeting setting, and it can be more relaxed and able to generate more candid and useful discussion. It enables all Venturers to give input, not just through their delegated Unit representatives and shows them the workings of Youth involvement and input while helping them see outcomes of their input. We will travel through Singapore and go to Universal studios and Gardens By the Bay before arriving in Manila and camping with this troop at a Beach resort. Venturer Ball 3 July 2015 The Venturer Ball is designed to enable Venturers from all over the state to come together on a social basis. JOTA-JOTI 17 – 18 October 2015 Jamboree-On-The-Air and Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTA-JOTI) are official international twin events of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). They are youth program events intended for young people in Scouting of all ages. They enable and encourage Scouts around the world to communicate with one another by means of amateur radio and the internet, providing a fun and educational Scouting experience and promoting their sense of belonging to a worldwide Scout Movement. Environment Camp 9 – 11 October 2015 (To Be Confirmed) The Environment Camp is designed to give Venturers an opportunity to work towards or earn their Environment tape, whilst learning how to work together as part of a much larger team than is normal in their Units. St Georges Ceremony 24 April 2014 Celebrated on the eve of ANZAC day, a ceremony to celebrate St George, the patron saint of scouting, is held at the Pines picnic area in Kings Park each year. Rovers take the opportunity to remember their knightly vows, and all other scout sections are invited to attend and enjoy the ceremony and learn the legend of St George and the dragon.
