The Foreign Language Department assigns grammar work or readings appropriate to each language level accompanied by study guides, reading comprehension or writing exercises. The assignments are distributed to incoming students in class before summer vacation. The assignments will be mailed to students who are new to Notre Dame. Each teacher provides specific instructions regarding when the written assignments are due and how they will be assessed. Below is the list of foreign language courses with summer work. Please email the teacher of the course with any questions or problems. Extra copies of the assignments can be obtained from Mrs. Palevich during the summer. French French II Honors Complete by the end of the first week of school. 1 Read “Quelques Gaulois” 2 Answer all questions marked with an arrow. Merci et bonnes vacances! Teacher: Mrs. Sophie AlfonsiConnaire ([email protected]) French III Honors Complete the verb exercises in the packet. You should also write a short response to the following prompts: 1. You’re making plans for the weekend. Write two conversations in which you ask your parent for permission to go somewhere. In the first, you get permission, but you must do something else first. In the second, you’re denied permission. (each miniconversation should be at least 4 lines long) 2. Write a letter to a friend whom you haven’t seen in a very long time, telling him or her about your recent vacation. Tell when, where and with whom you went. Include details about the weather and at least two things you did. Remember to ask your friend what’s going on with him or her. Your answers to all exercises and the two writings must be turned in to Mme Napier on the first day of school (September 4th). Also, each student should write a 1page (double spaced) essay answering the following question: “Quels sont les avantages et les inconvénients de porter un uniforme à l’école?” Again, all work should be submitted via Google Docs to Mme Stine by the 8/23 deadline. In addition to the reading, students are to submit a sample of their writing. The essay should be 1.5 pages long (double spaced) and should respond to the following essay topic: “Dans notre monde moderne, les traditions demeurent. Quelles sont les traditions qui vous sont les plus chères? Expliquez pourquoi elles vous tiennent tant à coeur.” All work (both the reading comprehension questions and essay) are to be shared with Mme Stine via Google Docs by Friday, August 23rd. The answers will be collected on the first day of class in September and will be graded on accuracy and completeness. After discussion of the story students will be expected to write a summary of the story’s events in Spanish as a test in late September. Teacher: Mrs. Rosemary Guarino ([email protected]) Spanish III Honors Students will do grammar review exercises in the Schaum’s Spanish Grammar Workbook in order to prepare for the new verb tenses and moods to be learned in level 3. Their answers will be collected on the first day of class in September. Students will take a test on the material early in September. The honors level students are expected to attain a higher degree of accuracy in this test than the other level. Teacher: Mrs. Clare Ziff ( [email protected]) Spanish III Students will do grammar review exercises in the Schaum’s Spanish Grammar Workbook in order to prepare for the new verb tenses and moods to be learned in level 3. Their answers will be collected on the first day of class in September. Students will take a test on the material early in September. Teacher: Mrs. Clare Ziff ( [email protected]) Spanish IV Honors Students will receive a packet from their Spanish 3 teacher. During the summer students will work on the first vocabulary section of the course as well as fine tuning their ability to correctly form the Preterite and Imperfect tenses of all regular and irregular verbs. Included in the packet are instructions for online listening activities as well as writing and grammar practices. All work is to be completed by the first day of classes. After correcting and discussing material, there will be a major test the second week of school. Student answers will be collected the first week of school.The reading and the answers will be reviewed in class, and the students will be tested on the material.
