The Euler approximation provides a simple method for simulating the solutions of stochastic differential equations. Using tools from second year probability theory, and methods for generating Gaussian random variables, the student will simulate the solution of some linear and non-linear stochastic differential equations. Logiciels : Matlab 3 6 6.1 MATHAA-SMAT (Prof. Victor Panaretos) Introduction to density estimation Sous la responsabilité de : Victor Panaretos Attribué à : The goal of statistics is to infer the properties of a population given data from this population. This problem is phrased mathematically by requiring to estimate a probability distribution given realizations of random variables following this distribution. Often these distributions are known up to a parameter, leading to parametric estimation. This mini-project will investigate the fundamental aspects of estimation when the distribution is completely unknown, and we wish to recover it entirely from the data. Basic estimators such as the histogram and kernel estimator will be considered, and the basic ideas required to assess their performance will be investigated. Logiciels : R 6.2 Handling Missing Data with the EM Algorithm. Sous la responsabilité de : Yoav Zemel Attribué à : Likelihood provides a unifying method for conducting statistical inference on the unknown parameter value of a distribution given data from that distribution. In practice, however, it is not uncommon to not have a complete data set at hand - some observations might be missing due to measurement limitations. The EM algorithm is a very successful broad method to implement likelihood inference when not all the data are available. This mini-project will investigate the motivation, workings and basic properties of the EM algorithm, and consider its use in some special examples. Logiciels : R 6.3 Univariate Linear Regression. Sous la responsabilité de : Yoav Zemel Attribué à : Described as the ’workhorse of statistics’, regression attempts to establish and investigate the relationship between two phenomena that are characterized by random variation. An especially important special case is that of linear regression, when the relation is assumed to be linear, as it is in fact much more powerful then the linearity assumption may seem to suggest. This mini-project will consider the basic elements of constructing, estimating and assessing a linear regression model between two variables, using likelihood as a basic tool. Suppose you make a polygon from random points in the plane. Construct a new polygon by connecting the midpoints of its edges and rescale it in a specific way. Repeat. Some experiments now reveal that no matter how you start or how many points you take, in the limit the points will lie on an ellipse that is tilted 45 degrees from the coordinate axes. In this project, you will experiment with Matlab to see how this iteration behaves, how it can be analyzed using simple matrix multiplications, and how the limit can be described using the eigenvalue decomposition. After polygons in the plane, you will extend the experiments and analysis to polygons in three (or arbitrary) dimensions. This project is based on the paper "From Random Polygon to Ellipse : An Eigenanalysis" by A. N. Elmachtoub and C. F. Van Loan. Logiciels : Matlab or Octave. Remark : The report and poster may be written in French or English. 8.2 Simulating particle interactions - N -body problem Sous la responsabilité de : Ana Susnjara Attribué à : . you are given a set of n particles in the force field that are also interacting with each other. The movement of each particle is determined by its initial position and velocity, by the influence of the outside force field on the particle and by the influence of the interacting forces between particles. The goal is to calculate the movement of all particles during some time interval. As n can be quite large, this can be computationally challenging problem. One algorithm that solves this problem with satisfying accuracy and in reasonable time complexity is the Barnes-Hut algorithm. The students working on the project should understand the algorithm and implement in C++(or MATLAB). Force integration over time should be calculated using some simple integration formula, e.g., the Euler method. A simple example where the method can be tested is the computation of interactions between neutral atoms and molecules. For the interactions between the particles, the Lennard-Jones potential should be used. Periodic boundary conditions for the particle surrounding should be used. The algorithm should be tested for different values of the constants in the Barnes-Hut algorithm as well as for different values of the constants in the Lennard-Jones potential. Logiciels : C++ (or Matlab). Remark : The report and poster may be written in French or English. 7 8.3 Image and data reconstruction using matrix completion Sous la responsabilité de : Jonas Ballani Attribué à : . Given only a few entries of a possibly very large matrix, we want to fill in the missing data and thereby reconstruct the original matrix. Typical applications of this matrix completion problem are to be found in the area of image processing (reconstructing a corrupted image or removing unwanted elements) or recommender systems like the Netflix movie rating algorithm. Implement a simple version of the state-of-the-art LMaFit algorithm, which uses an alternating least-squares approach to solve the problem and try it out on several small examples. You will learn about low-rank approximation techniques and how such low-rank structure can be exploited in numerical algorithms. Logiciels : Matlab, Octave or Python. Remark : The report and poster may be written in French or English. 9 9.1 MATHICSE-ANMC (Prof. Assyr Abdulle) Calcul de la trajectoire de planètes Assistant responsable : Martin Huber or Orane Jecker Attribué à : . This situation arises, for instance, in the so-called obstacle problems, in which one looks for a function u representing the rest position of a string subject to gravity that is also bounded to lie above a given object (the obstacle) whose shape is described by another function phi. Logiciels : Matlab ; LATEX. 13 13.1 MATHICSE-MCSS (Prof. Jan S Hesthaven) Gauss Quadratures and Orthogonal Polynomials Sous la responsabilité de : Daniel Baffet Attribué à : Gauss quadrature rules are, in some sense, the most efficient methods for numer- ical integration. In this mini-project we will develop a program that uses Gauss quadratures to approximate the integral of an input function. As the construc- tion of Gauss quadratures involves orthogonal polynomials, we will take the opportunity to study some of the interesting properties of such polynomials. Logiciels : 13.2 Polynomial interpolation and approximation of functions. Sous la responsabilité de : Paul Cazeaux Attribué à : Interpolation is an important method in numerical analysis, which can be used to connect data points from measurements by a smooth function, to approximate a complex function by a simple one, etc. In particular, interpolation by a polynomial function is a fundamental problem which leads to counterintuitive observations and difficulties. Understand and implement an algorithm for the interpolation of a 1d function by a polynomial. Study numerically the convergence of the approximation with increasing polynomial degree for various choices of sets of interpolating nodes (equispaced, Chebyshev. . . ) and discuss Runge’s phenomenon. If time allows, compute and study the behavior of numerical approximations of the Lebesgue constants for some choices of interpolating nodes. Logiciels : 11 13.3 Saving Schrodinger’s Cat. Sous la responsabilité de : Allan Nielsen Attribué à : A young student from the physics department has spend much too long time thinking about the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics and he now thoroughly insists on placing an innocent cat in a closed box with a poisonous timebomb. The student has asked us to provide a box and various boxes are available in our laboratory. To save the cat we must find the box that maximizes the chances of the cat tunneling to safety trough the sides of the box. In order to do so, we turn to the Schrodinger equation. The Schrodinger equation is a complex valued PDE and by solving it we can derive the probability-distribution of cat in space. In this project you must solve the 1d Schrodinger equation numerically for various potential distributions so to find the box that maximize the chances of the cat making it out alive. To give the cat tunneling capabilities we let mass of cat mcat = 1kg and make a refinement of the Planck’s constant, = 6.6 · 1034 m2kg 1m2kg . In this project you will be introduced ss to programming in matlab and to basic numerical methods for solving partial differential equations. Logiciels : 13.4 Modelling Shallow Water Waves. Sous la responsabilité de : Allan Nielsen Attribué à : The shallow water wave equations is a system of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. The equations are of particular interest because they can be used to model a wide range of atmospheric and oceanic phenomenons such as Rossby waves, Kelvin waves, Gravity waves, Tidal waves, Tsunami waves and so on. A multitude of numerical methods for solving the many variants of the equations exists. Depending on your interests and motivation we can investigate various finite difference or finite volume numerical schemes in terms of stability and accuracy or build an implementation of a simple solver for the two dimensional equations. In this project you will be introduced to programming in matlab and to basic numerical methods for solving partial differential equations. Let m, n be relatively prime integers, with m > 0. Then the arithmetic progression U (m, n) := n, m + n, 2m + n, 3m + n, ... contains infinitely many primes. The standard proof of the above results require basic tools from analytic number theory. The purpose of this project is to present an elementary algebraic proof of the above theorem in the particular cases n = 1. More explicitly, we will show that for all positive integer m the arithmetic progressionU (m, 1) contain infiitely many primes. Required knowledge : In principle any student knowing basic facts about rings and fields should be able to follow the material need it for this project. Abstract. The principal objective of this mini-project is to study various Riesz means using MAPLE, MATHEMATICA or MATLAB thereby checking some conjectures and deep analytical results on these quantities. Description of the Project Let m, n be positive integers and t ≤ 1 be a fixed parameter. Define λm,n = m2 + t2 n2 . (1) The quantities λm,n can be also interpreted as the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the rectangle [0, π] × [0, π/t]. For σ ≥ 0 consider the Riesz means Rσ (z) of λm,n defined by XX Rσ (z) := (z − λm,n )σ (2) λm,n ≤z The quantity R0 (z) equals the number of points with coordinates (m, tn) inside the closed ball of √ radius z. The student has to study the functions z 7→ z −σ−1 Rσ (z) (3) for various choices of σ and the parameter t. Theoretical Background and Work to be done It is well known (literature will be detailed during the project) that lim z −σ−1 Rσ (z) = z→∞ π 4(σ + 1)t (4) and these limits are approached from below. The qualitative structure of the function in (4) is only known for σ ≥ 2 where it has been proved recently that it is strictly increasing. It is conjectured that for σ < 2 the function (4) has a unique maximum between two consecutive values of λm,n and that the sequences of theses maximal values is increasing for all 2 > σ > σcr where σcr does not depend on t. These conjectures have to be checked for various values of σ and t for low lying values of λm,n (the first hundreds or so). 21 23 23.1 SB-CRPP (Prof. Minh Quang Tran) La question du Bryllium dans les réacteurs de fusion Sous la responsabilité de : Prof. Minh Quang Tran Attribué à : 23.2 Qu’est que le kriegage et son tulisation pratique ?
