But hold on, in French, all nouns have a gender. The difference between UN and UNE is that "UN" is used in front of masculine words and "UNE" in front of feminine words. And of course there is no rule establishing whether a word is feminine or masculine. Let's look at a few examples: une question (a question), un problème (a problem), une ville (a city), un homme (a man), une femme (a woman), un ami (a friend), une chaussette (a sock), un bisou (a kiss). Indefinite articles also have a masculine and a feminine. The French equivalents of "THE" are "LE" and "LA". LE is used with masculine words and LA with feminine ones. Examples : La question (the question), le problème (the problem), la ville (the city), le bisou (the kiss), la femme (the woman). But careful new Frenchies! In front of words starting with a vowel sound, both LE and LA become "L' apostrophe". Examples: L'homme (the man), l'ami (the friend), l'hôtel (the hotel) Tongue Twisters 1. Panier, piano (Basket, piano) 2. Ton thé t’a-t-il ôté ta toux ? (Did your tea take away your cough?) 3. Je vais chez ce cher Serge. (I’m going to this dear Serge’s) 4. Les chaussettes de l’archiduchesse sont-elles sèches ou archi-sèches? (Are the Archduchess’s socks dry or super dry?) 15
