Exercise 3
Read the text then answer the questions 1 to 8. For each question, choose A, B or C. There is
only one correct answer.
UFOs - does life on other planets exist?
Is there a scientific explanation for UFOs 1 or do alien life forms really exist? Here are two interesting
cases.
On a cold dark winter’s evening in 1988, John Hickes and Richard William were driving to a friend’s
house near Canterbury when they saw a bright red object in the sky about 500 metres in front of them.
5
When they drove nearer to see what it was, they were very surprised to find a big mass of liquid metal,
bubbling on the road like volcanic lava. When the firemen arrived shortly after, they took more than an
hour to make the boiling mass cold. James Raddcliffe, a specialist at the university, concluded that
material like this could not come from a meteor, and military experts, announced that it didn’t come
from any aeroplane or spacecraft.
10
Of course, some people said that it could be a joke. But a joke like this would be too difficult to make.
Clearly this was very mysterious.
Other unexplained phenomena of this nature have been reported for centuries. But the real interest in
UFOs started in 1947. In the last 50 years there have been more than 10,000 reports in Britain alone.
But most of them were in fact aircrafts or satellites. Just more than 5% of the cases cannot be
15
explained and naturally some experts now say that aliens have visited our planet.
Here is another story. In the 1980’s Peter and Linda Burnham were cycling together along a country
road near Rye in Sussex, when suddenly a terribly strong light made them fall off their bicycles. When
the couple stopped to protect their eyes with their hands, they could feel intense heat and heard a
terrible noise like the sound of a high-speed train. A minute later, when they could look up again, they
20
saw an enormous metal object like a diamond, floating in the sky. There were flames around it and it
was now emitting a loud high-pitched noise. After that, five or six jet aircrafts arrived from nowhere
flying after the mysterious object.
When they cycled home, Linda and Peter had headaches and sickness As a result of the shock,
Linda suffered from depression and couldn’t go to work for six weeks. Finally, Linda and Peter
25
decided to call the local military base for explanations but they answered that they didn’t know
anything about the jet aircrafts. So, the origin of the mysterious diamond-shaped object is still a
mystery today. Until we can prove the opposite, its origin may be from another planet.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
1. ...............
Christopher Columbus is generally considered as the man who discovered
America. But it is not true. Historians know now that the Vikings were the first to
come to America between 800 and 1000.
2. ...............
In reality, Christopher Columbus wanted to go to India by sailing west. He wanted
to find a shorter route to get more gold, spices and luxury goods. The King and
Queen of Spain accepted to finance his expedition.
3. ...............
So, Christopher Columbus discovered America by accident! Like his
contemporaries, he didn't know a continent was on the way to India! First he
arrived at the island of Cuba, so it wasn't even America.
4. ...............
After Columbus's first trip. England and France sent explorers to find a passage to
the East. These explorers wanted to find fish, gold and slaves for their countries.
One of them was called Amerigo Vespucci. He gave his name to the continent but
he didn't discover it!
5. ...............
In the 16th century, everybody called this new continent America. It received the
name of the United States when the country became independent in 1783 after a
war against the British. The Americans were very happy! It was the fourth of July.
