1 Dossier pédagogique Anglais Le réalisme américain American realism Disciplines associées : histoire, arts plastiques Collège/A2-B1 Accueil « La peinture américaine » C’est à la fin du XIXe siècle que les peintres américains s’affranchissent du modèle européen, avec notamment les deux « pères fondateurs » que sont Winslow Homer et Thomas Eakins. Ce dernier donne à l’art américain une impulsion majeure, qui ne cessera de l’animer, de l’Ashcan School au pop art : celle du réalisme. Cette veine ne doit cependant pas occulter le courant abstrait, qui connut son heure de gloire dans les années 1950 avec l’École de New York et contribua à imposer la peinture des États-Unis sur la scène internationale. Voir aussi sur ce thème la revue Textes et Documents pour la classe n° 1043 « La peinture américaine ». Dans ce dossier pédagogique, on découvre le réalisme américain et l’un de ses fondateurs, Edward Hopper, qui a peint la société américaine des années 1920 à 1940. ANGLAIS – COLLEGE / A2-B1 – LE REALISME AMERICAIN © SCÉRÉN – CNDP, 2012 3 Dossier pédagogique Anglais Disciplines associées : histoire, arts plastiques Collège/A2-B1 Le réalisme américain American realism Scénario pédagogique Les objectifs énoncés sont ancrés sur les recommandations du Cadre européen commun de référence pour les langues (CECRL, Conseil de l’Europe, 2001) : Culturels/Interculturels : savoir, aptitudes et savoir-faire, savoir être et savoir apprendre (cf. chapitre V, 1. Compétences générales) Communicatifs : activités de communication langagière et stratégies, capacités traitées (cf. chapitre IV) Langagiers : compétences linguistiques, sociolinguistiques et pragmatiques (cf. chapitre V, 2. Compétences spécifiques) Les Documents supports constituent autant de types de « textes » authentiques permettant de travailler les objectifs (cf. chapitre IV). La séquence pédagogique comprend 3 étapes pouvant correspondre à 3 séances de cours. Étape 1 Objectifs et dispositif préconisé Le but est de définir le réalisme américain. On propose un pair work. Activité 1 : préparation des questions Les élèves, regroupés par paires, reçoivent la Fiche Élève 1, une définition du réalisme américain avec une information manquante. Chaque élève prépare sa question. Pour éviter que les élèves n’échangent des questions fausses sur le plan grammatical et phonologique, la correction se fait avant l’échange. On rappelle la formation des énoncés interrogatifs et le schéma intonatif descendant des questions ouvertes. Activité 2 : échange Une fois les questions corrigées, les élèves échangent. Le professeur veille à la bonne réalisation phonologique des énoncés. Une salle multimédia avec accès à Internet est nécessaire. Activité 3 : webquest Document 1 : http://edwardhopper.weebly.com/. Les élèves collectent des informations biographiques sur l’artiste. Le site sur lequel ils travaillent propose de très nombreuses illustrations. Ils reçoivent la Fiche Élève 2. La correction est collective et la PRL porte sur le prétérit pour parler de la vie d’une personne décédée. À l’issue de la correction, les élèves sont invités à s’exprimer sur leur tableau préféré et les raisons de leur choix (PPC). Activité 4 : vidéo Document 2 : vidéo : « Edward Hopper retrospective offers glimpse behind US icon’s pain » sur le site http://video.xin.msn.com/, taper « Edward Hopper » dans le moteur de recherche et sélectionner la première vidéo proposée. Pour compléter les informations collectées lors de l’activité 1, les élèves travaillent sur une vidéo et reçoivent la Fiche Élève 3. La correction est collective. On fait par ailleurs relever aux élèves des verbes au prétérit et on propose une réflexion sur la prononciation de la marque –ED. –ED se prononce : [d] en règle générale, c’est-à-dire qu’on le prononce comme s’il y avait un « d » à la fin ; [t] après certains sons, si le verbe se termine par le son [p], [k], [f], [s] ; [id] après les sons [d] et [t]. Voici une liste des verbes utilisés sur le site internet et dans la vidéo : created – entered – visited – painted – died – influenced – discovered – observed – prepared. On demande aux élèves de classer tous les verbes relevés dans les bonnes colonnes. Étape 3 Objectifs et dispositif préconisé Il s’agit de faire découvrir aux élèves d’autres peintres réalistes américains en leur faisant réaliser des exposés. ANGLAIS – COLLEGE / A2-B1 – LE REALISME AMERICAIN © SCÉRÉN – CNDP, 2012 5 Activité 5 : exposés Les élèves sont invités à choisir un peintre dans la liste suivante : George Bellows, George B. Luks, Robert Henri, etc.. Il convient de laisser un temps suffisant de préparation à la maison. L’élève devra présenter la vie de l’artiste choisi et impérativement illustrer ses propos. L’outil informatique semble ici indispensable. Impératif à respecter : l’élève devra s’exprimer à partir de notes, et pas de phrases rédigées. Les élèves sont invités à prendre des notes pendant les exposés de leurs camarades. Suivant le niveau des élèves, le professeur peut fournir un tableau qui servira de support à la prise de note avec des colonnes comme date of birth, death, main paintings, etc. Activité 6 : activité ludique Pour clôturer la séquence de façon ludique, deux activités peuvent être proposées : un quiz portant sur tout ce qui a été vu ; des « biographies devinettes » : un élève décrit l’œuvre et la vie d’un artiste et les autres doivent deviner de qui il parle. Prolongements possibles Visite de l’exposition « Edward Hopper » au Grand Palais du 10 octobre 2012 au 28 janvier 2013.
