S.A.S. March 25 - May 21, 2016 A landscape is an overview: the term itself implies that vision is involved and calls for embrace. The eye enfolds it while it stimulates the senses and enraptures the mind. Fresh, charming, laughing, injured, prone to storms, the landscape needs its qualifying term, as much as moods and human feelings, also known as the “landscapes of the soul” or the “inner landscapes”. Victor Hugo in the Contemplations, Rousseau in the Reveries of a Solitary Walker, Baudelaire in the Invitation to the Voyage: landscape has always been an endless source of art. Gaston Bachelard emphasizes, “a native country is more material than it is just a space: it is granite or land, wind or drought, a source of water or of light. This is where our reveries are materialized, where our 1 dreams get their true substance, where we call for our fundamental color.” Five artists from different horizons are united through a contemplative and meditative vision of art: works by two young Parisian artists: Terencio Gonzalez, whose work is shown here for the first time in a gallery and Lyes Hammadouche, and by Lauryn Youden, artist based in Berlin, are next to internationally renown other artists: the British Nathaniel Rackowe and the New-Yorker Evan Gruzis. Posters, wood, sand, amateur video, building materials, textile dye, each uses unprocessed or cheap materials to sublime them; just as nature can compose a range of blend multicolored worlds from raw material or elements. While digressing from the traditional representation based on mimesis, each reenacts the nature’s creation process in order to create a landscape of his own. Aesthetic echoes are bouncing within the gallery space throughout the exhibition, letting the viewer experience here a mental landscape and there another, from a kind of meditation to another. By sticking Argentinian posters’ backgrounds on large linen canvases first coated with white acrylic house paint, the environments Terencio Gonzalez had seen previously emerge from his memory to create vibrating and radiant variations. This colored dazzle evokes the more confidential iridescence found in the luminous spectrum of Nathaniel Rackowe’s work, neon lights hidden behind building sites’ items, or, more conspicuously in the crossed sunset views on the beach in Lauryn Youden’s video. The peaceful back and forth of the waves and the haunting music evoke the meditative impact and the fluidity of the artificial colors used by Evan Gruzis, as well as the hypnotic force of the lunar landscapes and the reversed topographies’ slow motion of Lyes Hammadouche’s work. 2 Allowing an abstract image to be associated with the idea of landscape, “The Cosmic Shifter” does no longer focus on a simple horizontal line revealing earth and sky, but a poetic approach probing the viewer’s subconscious. Remote and intangible, the landscapes we remember – with their own colors, lights, movements and impressions still on the shore of our imagination -, gather both a presence and intensity that force contemplation and open the era of modern dreamlike: “We dream before we contemplate. Any landscape is first an experience of a dream, before it 3 even is a self-conscious display”, emphasizes again Gaston Bachelard . Lauryn Youden’s video, the only truly figurative work presented here, appears like a deformed postcard of a revisited cliché oddly similar to a state of heavenly sleep the inhabitants experienced in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World: art, a fascinating and soothing cure with a sprinkle of humor, is a substitute for soma, a drug forcing to experience permanent happiness. In these troubled times, it seems important to repeat that dream and contemplation still convey escapism for imagination and remains the core of creation today. At the end of this journey, the works appear to be a remedy to the world’s visual and technological speed and saturation, as if time was withheld, an echo to Albert Camus’ writing in his notebooks in 1939: “A long break in 4 the clouds is enough to bring calm flooding back into overanxious hearts” . A young Parisian artist with Argentinian origins, Terencio González graduated at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2015. By sticking posters’ backgrounds that he found in Argentina on large linen canvases first coated with white acrylic house paint, he creates vibrating and radiant variations, like a contemporary Rothko painting made with cheap materials. Traces of spray paint are added to the whole’s equilibrium, a language close to Martin Barré’s, no longer holding any contents. González’s work revisits history of art, between Color-Field and Action Painting, Nouveau Realism and Minimalism. The environments he previously visited emerge from his memory through dazzling, a landscape’s both physical and mental where one can imagine oneself. > Evan GRUZIS 1979, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (US) Lives and works in New York (US) In 2002, he holds a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) of painting at the Wisconsin Madison University and in 2008 a MFA (Master of Fine Arts) at Hunter College of New York. He also teaches painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Evan Gruzis explores the psychological and spiritual aspects of the visual culture of the 80’s, Pop Art aesthetics, the Memphis Group, New Wave album covers, adding Hollywood-style beauty references: palm trees, sunsets, Ray-Ban sunglasses. By combining textile dye and acrylic paint, he develops his own technic. Inspired by Dogen Zenji, a Japanese Zen Buddhist master, the artist plays with light, the fluidity of the material and the artificiality of the colors in order to reveal a psychological area. The frame is essential within these abstract works, dissolving tensions between the inside and the outside, chaos and moderation, and opening a window onto meditation. > Lyes HAMMADOUCHE 1987, Algiers (DZ) Lives and works in Paris (FR) Lyes Hammadouche arrives in France at the age of 6 and gets a degree in Arts Décoratifs school in Paris in 2013. His work gets particularly noticed in 2015, when he is invited at the Collège des Bernardins. Fascinated by sciences and hypnosis, he currently works on a PhD on the hypnotic inductions principles linked to plastic production (under the care of Samuel Bianchini, artist, professor and researcher at Ensad and Jérôme Sackur, researcher in cognitive sciences at ENS). With an exceptional technical expertise, using laser and organizing complex mechanisms, Lyes Hammadouche creates units of pure and hypnotic beauty. His works in motion evoke extended temporality and question the human and social cycles, the rhythms of life, of sleep and of the subconscious. S.A.S. By its use of pure geometric lines and the limited range of colours, Rackowe’s work is undeniably minimalist. Worthy successor of the artistic movements from the American 60’s, he follows the neon masters, such as Piotr Kowalski, by appreciating architecture with the use of the light, and like the artist Dan Flavin, by provoking the awareness of colour in space. The radiance produced by the light bulb reveals the ability of the viewer’s perception and the de-formation of the real space. The fluorescent tubing is closely linked to urbanism and modernity, the luminous spectrum transcribe a new appropriation of space, individual and wandering, through the re-use of building site materials. > Lauryn YOUDEN 1989, Vancouver (CA) Lives and works in Berlin (DE) Lauryn Youden is a Canadian artist based in Berlin. Since her studies at the Universität Der Künste Berlin, Berlin and Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver she holds a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts). Youden is founder and co-curator of Ashley Berlin, an artist-run exhibition space for emerging local and international artists in Berlin, Germany. Recent exhibitions include Import Projects, Berlin, Limbo, London, 8 eleven, Toronto, Index Gallery, Vancouver, and Or Gallery, Vancouver. Youden’s practice spans video, digital media, print, photography and installation, with particular use of meditation and an alternative healing practice that embraces nature. Her artwork evokes futuristic soothing atmospheres and depictions of happiness, functioning as they are designed to, as antidotes for the anxiety caused by the daily use and resulting dependencies on digital technologies.
