Axes de Recherche Pétrophysique : Développement d’une aproche unifiée des phénomènes de transport (hydrauliques, électriques, diffusion des ions, thermiques) et des aspects mécaniques (compaction mécanique, compaction par pression dissolution aux joints de grains, détermination des propriétés mécaniques de milieux saturés par des fluides visco-élastiques, étude des ondes de choc). Utilisation de la méthode de prise de moyenne volumique pour le changement d’échelle dans les milieux poreux. Développment et utlisation de la thermodynamique horséquilibre de Prigogine pour obtenir une théorie unifiée des phénomènes de transport dans les milieux poreux chargés et déformables. Etude des mécanismes de conduction électrique dite de surface dans la résistivité 3 électriques effective des roches. Développement des propriétés électrocinétiques (électrofiltration, électroosmose) et des couplages électrosismiques et sismoélectrique dans le domaine fréquentiel. Extension des théories pétrophysiques dans le cas non-saturé avec plusieurs échelles de porosité. Influence du nombre de Reynolds sur les phénomènes électrocinétiques. Développement des modèles de propriétés de transport dans les matériaux argileux (phénomènes osmotiques, double couche électrique avec complexation, étude de la diffusion des ions). Géophysique théorique. Développement des méthodes de tomographie de résistivité électrique et inversion des sources de potentiel spontané. Utilisation des méthodes de descende de gradient, simplex, intercoorrélation, inversion avec régularization de type Tokhonov-Arsenin, utilisation des méthodes de krigeage, co-krigeage, krigeage à dérive externe, et méthodes bayésiennes. Inversion jointe de données géophysiques (radar, résistivité électrique entre forages). Développement de la methode de polarisation provoquée dans le domaine spectral (approche mécanistique), développement des méthodes sismoélectriques et électrosismiques (localisation de réservoirs pétroliers). Géophysiques appliquées. Applications des méthodes géophysiques à la caractérisation de la géométrie et de la dynamique des circulations hydriques dans le sous-sol, visualisation de l’extension des panaches de contamination dans les aquifères et inversion du potentiel rédox (rôle des bactéries dans les processus de biogéobatterie), travaux sur sites archéologiques (port romain de Fréjus en France, ville grecque de Cûmes en Italie, ville gréco-roamine d’Ampurias en Espagne), détermination non-intrusive de l’endommagement sur les parois de galleries dans des formations argileuses (site de Bure avec l’ANDRA). Applications des méthodes géophysiques actives et passives à la détection des cavités (karsts, cavités d’origine anthropique comme les marnières). Localisation des zones de fuites dans les barrages et les digues (avec Sobesol et EDF). Etude des glissements de terrain. Inversion géophysique des propriétés hydrauliques (emmagasinement et transmissivité) à partir de l’analyse de données géophysiques lors de tests de pompage et d’infiltration. Systèmes hydrothermaux et volcaniques. Etude des volcans Stromboli (Italie), Vulcano (Italie), du Piton de la fournaise (Ile de la Réunion), du Ruapehu (Nouvelle Zélande) et du Mont Saint Helen (Washington State, Etats-Unis). Etude des systèmes hydrothermaux de Waymangu (Nouvelle Zélande) et des sources thermales de l’Hymalaya (Népal). Imagerie, monitoring par l’utilisation de méthodes électriques actives et passives, étude des couplages thermohydromécaniques. Pétrophysique des roches volcaniques. Développement de l’électrosismologie (inversion de la position et de la polarisation de sources thermohydromécaniques à partir de l’information électromagnétique d’origine électrocinétique) et étude, en cours, de l’inversion jointe entre données sismologiques et électromagnétiques pour les séismes (utilisation de l’interférométrie pour l’équation de diffusion, développement d’antenne directionnelle pour les signaux EM). Etude de la signature électromagnétique d’onde de choc dans les failles. Etude du degasage (CO2, radon) dans les totopani du Népal en relation avec le cycle sismique. 4 3. Le potentiel rédox et la conductivité du fluide d’un panache de contamination sont deux paramètres clefs pour la surveillance d’un site contaminé. L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est de montrer que les méthodes de résistivité électrique et de potentiel spontané peuvent fournir des informations spatialisées sur la conductivité du fluide et le potentiel rédox d’un panache de contamination. Ces méthodes permettent ainsi de minimiser et d’optimiser l’inplantation de piézomètres de contrôle. L’application de la méthode de résistivité électrique sur le site d’Entressen en Provence (CET de classe 2) a permis d’obtenir une carte de la conductivité du fluide de l’aquifère, définissant ainsi l’extension du panache de contamination. Les signaux de potentiel spontané mesurés sur les sites contaminés sont associés à l’écoulement de l’eau dans le sous-sol (phénomène d’électrfiltration) et à la présence de contaminants organiques (phénomène électro-rédox). Les études antérieures avaient mis en évidence l’existence d’anomalies de potentiel spontané aux abords de sites contaminés, sans pour autant parvenir 23 à expliquer physiquement ce phénomène. Nous avons donc développé un modèle de bio-géobatterie naturelle, dans lequel les bactéries permettent le transfert des électrons entre la zone réduite du panache et la zone oxydée. Le courant électrique qui en résulte est à l’origine des anomalies de potentiel électrique mesurées sur le terrain. Pour valider ce modèle, nous avons également réalisé des expériences en cuve en présence de bactéries sulfatoréductrices. Les résultats de terrain et de laboratoire sont en accord avec un modèle dipolaire montrant un couplage linéaire à la source entre différence de potentiel électrique et différence de potentiel rédox. Les méthodes classiques pour déterminer le niveau piézométrique d’une nappe phréatique et ses propriétés hydrauliques reposent sur des mesures effectuées dans des piézomètres. Ces méthodes sont intrusives, coûteuses et fortement dépendantes de la densité de ceux-ci. Une méthode non-intrusive, facile d’utilisation et de faible coût capable de déterminer le niveau piézométrique d’une nappe et ses variations au cours du temps serait la bienvenue. La méthode du potentiel spontané basée sur la mesure du champ électrique naturellement présent dans le sol offre de telles possibilités. En effet, la circulation de l’eau dans le sous-sol génère un courant électrique. Ce courant source est responsable d’un champ électrique dont la signature est mesurable à la surface du sol. Ce phénomène, appelé phénomène d’électrofiltration, est l’une des principales sources du potentiel spontané. L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est de montrer que la méthode du potentiel spontané peut fournir des informations spatialisées sur la géométrie des circulations hydriques et sur les propriétés hydrauliques du sous-sol. Des expériences de terrain ont donc été menées pour mesurer la signature électrique d’un écoulement hydrique lors d’une expérience de pompage sur le site de l’Université de Cosenza (Italie) et lors d’expériences d’infiltration sur les sites tests de Roujan (Hérault) et de l’INRA d’Avignon. Pour une meilleure compréhension du problème physique sous-jacent, des simulations de pompage et d’infiltration ont été réalisées dans une cuve en plexiglas. Les résultats obtenus sur le terrain et en laboratoire démontrent la capacité de la méthode du potentiel spontané pour suivre la progression d’un écoulement. Les résultats de terrain et de laboratoire sont en accord et montrent qu’il existe une relation linéaire, au premier ordre, entre les variations du potentiel spontané et les variations du niveau piézométrique. Ces expériences démontrent l’utilité de la méthode du potentiel spontané comme outil adapté à la détermination du niveau piézométrique et des propriétés hydrauliques du sous-sol. L’excès de charges négatif à la surface des minéraux argileux ainsi que leur très grande surface spécifique confèrent aux milieux argileux des propriétés de transport très favorables pour le stockage des déchets radioactifs de haute activité et à vie longue. Le principal mécanisme de migration des radionucléides correspond à leur diffusion au sein de la formation argileuse en raison de la très faible conductivité hydraulique du milieu. L’objectif de cette thèse a été de réaliser et de valider par des expériences en laboratoire un modèle de transport mécanistique incluant explicitement les propriétés électrochimiques de l’interface minéral/solution. Nous avons donc réalisé un modèle de transport en s’affranchissant de l’hypothèse d’une couche diffuse fine à l’interface minéral/solution. Nous avons aussi développé et validé un modèle de 24 triple couche électrique basé sur des considérations cristallographiques et distinguant les sites de surface silanols, aluminols et >Si−O−Al<. Nous avons comparé avec succès les prédictions du modèle de transport aux valeurs des diffusivités ioniques et hydrauliques déterminées grâce aux mesures des champs électriques liés à la diffusion de fronts salins (potentiel de membrane) et hydriques (potentiel d’électrofiltration). La diffusivité du sel augmente en fonction de la force ionique du milieu car elle dépend des variations du potentiel de membrane. Nous avons également réussi à prédire les valeurs des coefficients de diffusion effectifs des traceurs ioniques monovalents en fonction du degré de compaction de la bentonite MX-80 et de la force ionique du milieu. Ce travail de thèse vise à utiliser plusieurs méthodes géophysiques (résistivité électrique, méthodes électromagnétiques, potentiel spontané) pour localiser les dollines sur le plateau Normand. Nous avons en particulier montré comment les signaux de potentiel spontané peuvent être inversés pour localiser la profondeur de l’interface entre le loess et l’argile à silex. A ce signal se superpose un signal lié aux écoulements préférentiels dans les dollines dont la signature électrique correspond à des anomalies négative du potentiel spontané avec des amplitudes de l'ordre de qualques dizaines de millivolts. Dans les deux cas, le couplage est électrocinétique et a pu être simulé sous FEMLAB (Comsol Multiphysics 3.2). Des méthodes d’interprétation des signaux de potentiel spontané ont également été développées pour étudier les marnières (cavité réalisé dans la crai pour l'extraction de celle-ci dans le but d'amender les sols acides). Ce travail de thèse vise à comprendre la source de anomalies de potentiel spontané lors de processus rédox dans le sous-sol à partir de mesures analogiques en cuves. Trois expériences ont été réalisées. La première expérience concerne la mesure de la response en potentiel spontané lors de la corrosion d’une barre de fer dans une cuve remplie de sable et saturé. Nous avons également mesuré la distribution du potentiel rédox et du pH. L’analyse des données combine un modèle direct du problème et l’analyse du problème inverse pour estimer le potentiel rédox à partir de potentiel spontané. Nous avons également réalisé des mesures de potentiel spontané lors de la synthèse galvanométrique de rouilles vertes. On observe la décroissance du potentiel spontané au cours du temps associé à la dissolution des rouilles vertes. La troisième série d’expérience concerne les anomalies de potentiel spontané associées à la présence de biofilm bactériens dans une cuve remplie de sable saturé en eau. (2) Publications. La fracturation d’un milieu poreux saturé en eau est la source d’émission électro-magnétiques que l’ont peut enregistrer à distance à l’aide de magnétomètres et d'un réseau d'électrodes très sensibles. Nous comptons utiliser ce phénomène pour localiser les sources d’émissions électromagnétiques du volcan Stromboli lors de ses paroxysmes. Nos travaux de recherches ont permis de comprendre la physique des émissions électromagnétiques associées à des perturbations thermohydromécaniques.
