Sean Gosnell is a partner in the Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Sean
has practised with BLG since joining us as an articling student in 1982, except for two
years (1989 and 1990) when he was employed by Olympia and York Canary Wharf
Limited in London, England, as a solicitor and its assistant chief operating officer.

Upon returning to the Firm in 1990, Sean became a partner and between 2008 and
2014 was the regional practice group leader of the Environmental, Municipal,
Expropriation and Regulatory Group. His municipal and expropriation work covers three
areas:

Assisting private land owners in identifying opportunities for unlocking and
creating value by pursuing enhanced land development approvals.

Advising private land owners faced with compulsory land acquisition by
governmental authorities.

Advising governmental authorities in the design and implementation of largescale land acquisition projects for infrastructure renewal.

Sean also has a significant practice representing lawyers in the defence of professional
negligence claims in commercial and complex real estate matters. As well, he acts on
business interruption loss claims. Drawing on connections to Chinese entities dating to
his time in London, Sean provides general legal advice to several Hong Kong- and
Chinese mainland-based companies, and has lectured at Peking University.


Acting for Metrolinx in connection with the acquisition of a number of properties
and obtaining related planning approvals in connection with several
infrastructure projects in the GTA.

Acted for land owners in a number of the leading Ontario expropriation cases
in the last 25 years, including Hillcrest v. Toronto and Torvalley v. MTRCA.

Provided land acquisition and planning advice to the City of Toronto on the
assembly of the lands required to create Yonge Dundas Square.

Also acted for the City in connection with the acquisition of the area known as

Acting for Xstrata in a substantial action involving mining claims.

Participated in several milestones in the development of Canary Wharf,
including the first lettings. Co-led a team that negotiated the conditional
acquisition of a large parcel of land near Canary Wharf and an associated
development agreement with the local government authority and a corporation
controlled by the City of Tianjin, China.
