The Peacock Inn

The Peacock Inn
 The Peacock Inn
The Inn dates back to the 1700s when it was built on the corner of Main Street (now Nassau Street) & Railroad Avenue (now University Place). Jonathan Deare, a member of the Continental Congress, purchased the property from Thomas Stockton in 1779. During its heyday, many luminaries, including Albert Einstein and F. Scott Fitzgerald, were known to eat, drink, and fraternize at The Peacock Inn. The Peacock Inn was moved to its present location on Bayard Lane in 1875 when it was purchased by the Princeton Hotel Company. Mr. Libbey, President of the Princeton Hotel Company. Not only was he a Princeton graduate and professor, but he was also the person who established orange and black as the University colors. In 1911, Joseph and Helen O’Connor purchased the Inn and they named The Peacock Inn after an inn in Midland England, which used the peacock as a symbol of good food, royalty, and good luck. After opening under its new name, the property became an interesting part of the area’s history. When Albert Einstein moved to Princeton, he stayed at the Peacock Inn for 10 days while construction of his house was being finished. It is believed that the basement area of The Peacock Inn, also known as “Peacock Alley”, was used as a Prohibition-‐‑era speakeasy. Upon renovations in 2006 by the new owners, Barry and Elaine Sussman, they uncovered three drawings by John Held, Jr. depicting scenes of the 1920s on the concrete walls of the basement. The scenes included a gin still, women in flapper attire, a Princeton professor, and mathematician John von Neumann driving while reading a book. Upon their discovery, the artwork was cut out of the concrete wall, and now hangs over the fireplace in each dining room. I | P a g e Table of Contents
